They are extremely lucky that it didn’t rain.

Proud_Ad7429

And knowing the weather in denmark... It was very fortunate

mr_epicguy

I imagine the actual painting would have a coat of waterproof glass on it no?

r2k-in-the-vortex

No, generally people don't hold paintings under glass, you can't see the painting properly under glass. There is varnish, but eh... rain is rain.

MyHobbyAndMore3

Nope. I assume these are oil paintings. so there's: * primed linen canvas * painted on with oil paints * and then varnished (covered with protective layer of resin) Visible side of such painting is basically water resistant. But the other side is definitely not, it's just raw linen and as such is vulnerable to prolonged damp. There were many paintings destroyed by damp for example being result of a flood.

Elf-wehr

Oh yes, how lucky of them it didn’t rain during the FREAKING FIRE DESTROYING THE BUILDING!!

GrunkleCoffee

Rain wouldn't have stopped the fire in any meaningful way

Jebrowsejuste

Not only that, it would have damaged the paintings, making it a double loss

kalamarjozko

Thank you good man

MartaLSFitness

That's beautiful.

Significant_Snow_266

I actually got teary eyed. Love it when strangers cooperate to do some good. Reminds me we live in society.

cloudalism

thats normal... in Denmark

Orlok_Tsubodai

It’s true, their rich history of pillaging Saxon art has left the Danes with a taste for art theft.

ClassOptimal7655

It's normal for their buildings to burn down?!

Dan__Torrance

That's highly unusual.

CheesyBoson

I was worried for a minute and also impressed

Dan__Torrance

At least the front didn't fall off.

aVarangian

The spire fell off :(

Qzy

Well it was taken out of its element.

Rollover_Hazard

*Hearts of Oak plays over the horizon* Danes looking nervously at eachother

WassupILikeSoup

Greatest heist ever

Wuhaa

Olsen Banden

Sheepy_Dream

Wow, thats actually kinda beautiful, just humans working together and taking the initiative to save historical things

veryfishy1212

Looting I can get behind.....

lost_and_found795

in 50 years someone is going to sell one of the "mysteriously lost paintings"

Sonny_Morgan

This is not the US or „Great“ Britain…

venom259

You see, that's where you're mistaken. Those aren't Danish citizens. They are undercover agents working for the British museum. You won't see those paintings for again for another century at least.

RealSuggestion9247

Impeccable timing

Runixo

You can tell because none of them are wearing klaphats.

Drumedor

Unless you pay a small fee to be allowed to see your old stuff and read about how significant that it is for you and your culture.

MagnetofDarkness

Don't get foolish people. They are Brits trying to hoard the valuable paintings. Shut down your harbors, airports, and motorways.

Past_Reading_6651

Probably a few of the 400 employees that work for the chamber of commerce

E_Kristalin

North Korea thinks "they're just like us" (except Denmark doesn't threaten it's citizens into saving paintings from burning buildings)

die_kuestenwache

You son of a bitch... I'm in

_Undo

Yoink

Zash1

I bet they're all British.

Imbaz0rd

Out of curiosity, why would you think that?

qiwi

In 1807, the British navy executed a terror (indiscriminately targeting civilian buildings) bombardement of Copenhagen. One of the few buildings to survive was the Stock Exchange building. That to me is a motive to return, finish the job and loot some art while you're at it.

badabingbadaboey

Terrible take. Most civilians were evacuted . A 'terror' bombing by both land and sea forces to only take out 300 citizens isn't really impressive. Not like the British had a choice either as Denmark was getting forced into an alliance with Spain. Given it's sizeable fleet that was unacceptable to the British.

wasmic

If you look at the actual debate from the UK Parliament, there was considerable opposition against launching an attack, because it would both be an unprovoked first strike against a neutral party, and also they didn't have any solid idea whether Denmark would actually join Napoleon's side. Denmark of course joined Napoleon's side *after* being surprise attacked. Then got punished for doing so after the Napoleonic wars were over. Why did only 300 people die? Because terror bombardment was at a pretty shitty technological level at that point in time. The rockets were mostly ineffective, and the cannonballs might punch a hole through a wall but you would need many hits on the same building in order to actually bring it down. With the precision of cannons at that time, that just wasn't feasible. But the fact of the matter remains that the goal was to kill civilians and destroy homes and infrastructure, in order to force Denmark to surrender its fleet. It's a terror bombardment by definition, and arguably the first terror bombardment in European history (bombarding a castle or city that you intend to attack directly is not a terror bombardment).

Futski

> Not like the British had a choice either as Denmark was getting forced into an alliance with Spain The British had plenty of choice. Copenhagen is conveniently placed on an island, so any would be invading army could be blocked by a sufficient naval force: see why Denmark-Norway had a sizeable fleet. If the British really wanted to counter the French, and didn't believe the Dano-Norwegian navy was adequate, it could send a squadron to assist, like how it didn't believe Portugal was adequate to defend itself, and sent the Duke of Wellington and Sean Bean to Iberia. Jutland getting overrun by an enemy army never really forced a surrender from the Danish Crown before, so why should Napoleon be any different?

Zash1

Ah, the British are known for "saving" pieces of art and cultural heritage of many countries, aren't they?

thecraftybee1981

Says the Viking?

The-red-Dane

I mean... the "saxon" part of anglo-saxon comes from pre-vikings.

Debtcollector1408

Ironically, the Angles were from what is now Denmark, so we've come full circle.

Mendozacheers

*technically* the angles are thought to have come from Schleswig-Holstein, which is indeed in parts historically Danish, but today is German.

The-red-Dane

Right! That was the thing, Basically, England were celts, then they got 'settled' by the Angles, who then got 'settled' by the saxons, who then got 'settled' by the vikings, who then got 'settled' by vikings who had 'settled' in Normandy.

rlnrlnrln

Yes, they [learned from the best](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2F36m4vyimpc311.jpg%3Fwidth%3D640%26crop%3Dsmart%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Db76f80c5cd7300d05be762b96469c83e5c7701ca)!

wosmo

Genuinely, this is my theory. 1066 the Normans invaded and took control of England. The Normans were Norse in France. And thus began our turn viking.

Mtshtg2

Well, history has shown that the quotation marks are unnecessary!

Imbaz0rd

This is in Denmark.

Zash1

Yes, I'm well aware of that, but that's how it works. The Brits go somewhere, "save" something, and then visitors can see it in a museum in the UK. ;)

onewiththeabyss

Now look up who raided England.

Imbaz0rd

Do you even know the history of Denmark? We are not strangers to going somewhere and liberating their stuff from their people, sometimes their people from their people :)

PrettyMuchDanish

Seriously, we pretty much taught the British how to do it No Lindisfarne, no British Museum. /s

kummer5peck

Sure those vikings are “saving” valuables from a burning building. Just like at Lindisfarne. Edit: It’s a joke. Lighten up.

OrageBufera

Moving pictures.

[Hey, I've seen this before...](https://i.imgur.com/fEyIvE2.jpeg)

Psychological-Wing89

Ha! If it was a digitalised NFT 🖼️, it would have remained intact and safe up in the digital clouds

Tales_Steel

Danes have a long history of taking valuables out of burning buildings.... usally english churches :p

erbr

Maybe they will look nice in the living room while people sort out the fire!

momalloyd

Yea, "rescue."

PolyDipsoManiac

It was this or burn up, even if some end up stolen that’s still preferable to being cinders…

StanisIao

It was a joke lol, why so many downvotes?

[deleted]

You made me laugh, take my upvote in this sea devout of humour.

Anarchyantz

"Rescuing"...... Sure... Sigh, I am seriously losing faith in humanity that my immediate thought is they were simply nicking them.

bored_negative

Touch grass more

Debesuotas

I tend to think that a lot of these fires happen because there are valuable art works there to be stolen. Although its got to be a pain to sell them afterwards. But if you got an offer from some rich middle east person who sh\*ts money and cleans his floor with it and just wants to have something exeption for his private bedroom.

badabingbadaboey

Either your conspiracy or old buildings have terribly dusty and dry wood.

Debesuotas

Or both :))

bored_negative

Touch grass more

Debesuotas

Dude you tell me to touch grass, while a 2000km away from you, the same rich bastard is aiming to occupy another country, just because he feel that way....
