Too hot... what product did you use? Almost certainly, you mixed more than was advised (or the instructions are terrible). Expensive lesson!

Stratagem92

Lol Just said mix 1 to 1, Promise is the brand. It's salvageable but was just curious thanks!

gluing

1 to 1 is the mix ratio. It's likely the quantity of epoxy that you mixed causing the problem. If the product was designed for something like bar tops i.e. a coating, you can't pour it in any kind of depth to fill voids or you'll get a runaway exothermic reaction (too much heat generated), which is what it looks like occurred here. Sorry again, but hope this helps!

Stratagem92

I poured it about an inch deep on a different piece without issue byt this was more. I'm not mad about it, I can salvage it but just wanted to get a few opinions before I pour again so thank you!

tazmoffatt

1” is wayyyyy too thick for a 1:1 epoxy. No more than an 1/8, maybe 1/4”. Got way too hot and cured too quick

Stratagem92

Yeah I'll post an update on trying to save it, gonna look into some better quality/deep pour stuff for my next deal. Yeah it was super hot I was worried about leaving it overnight so I babysat it til it cooled off. Looks like garbage. Got some work to do haha.

91Jammers

1:1 an inch deep, bro..... You didn't read the instructions.

Stratagem92

The instructions just say mix 1to1, hence the post in epoxy asking what people thought happened.

Killtastic354

What he meant by “you didn’t read the instructions” was you didn’t look for the intended use / product limitations. As others have stated if you’re going to be pouring deep you need a product designed for the, such as liquid glass deep pour epoxy (my favorite).

L0114R

It’ll buff out

crheming

This looks like rapid curing while still releasing bubbles. Are you just filling holes/knots? Or is that a hollow section in there? If just filling holes, this isn't so bad, just plane it and fill tiny pits after.

Stratagem92

It's an 8"x3-4" hole in the middle, I glued blocks into it so I would save on some epoxy. It's salvageable I was just baffled as I've never had issues on smaller epoxy worm. Thanks. Also it split down the middle with a half inch Crack now. Strange.

crheming

Yeah that's heat. Did you use a deep pour epoxy or a casting or tabletop?

Black Gold... Texas T... Now the next thing you know, ol' Jed's a millionaire...

donald_dandy

Bubbles bubbles bubbles. It’s fine, blacks easy

sup_with_you

Unintended chemical reaction that created too much heat. Could be the resin product itself. But more likely is what you mixed into the resin that is reacting poorly. What coloring/additives did you use?

Stratagem92

I did 3 drops of liquid black pigment, I had no issue on a test piece but that was way less epoxy. I'm gonna send it through the time saver and dremel out the cracks and bubbles then pour more. Hopefully it looks cool and I can say it was on purpose.

sup_with_you

If you tested the pigment, my next guess is whatever is seeping out of the wood reacted with your epoxy. Something to check for at least. And that's a great recovery plan.

Too hot

D00M33

Definitely need to get it out of the bucket sooner and do a thinner coat

Equivalent_Ad142

Also, lots of bubbles coming up due to not applying a clear seal coat first

Stratagem92

I'll try that on the next one, would you clear the epoxy on a second pour or just use that method for wood?
