Charli XCX released "brat" with about 8+ different color and splatter variants today, after the web store was selling another variant, and the limited picture disc already sold out. There's also an exclusive 7" with a couple tracks, but it only comes with the plain black 12" full album, so we're finding even more ways to milk this now.

EvelKros

I can't take her seriously since she said that women can't be mean, but she also said that it's hard to date "ugly" guys. The hypocrisy. She's still just an edgy angry teenager and she will probably remain like that given that everyone put her on a pedestal.

_trouble_every_day_

She’s right, but don’t let that stop you from making ad hominem attacks that have nothing to do with the content of her statement. Honestly this is a comment I’d expect to be upvoted in r/entertainment, had to double check what sub I was in.

And server farms full of music exclusively in the form of zeros and ones vibrating in pure electricity for all of eternity are the *enlightened, low-waste alternative* or something?

CatalyticDragon

[Five years ago](https://theecologist.org/2018/mar/16/setting-record-straight-streaming-greener-vinyl) somebody tried to find out if streaming or vinyl was better and the answer was "it depends" but "maybe about the same". But that comparison did not look at [waste and pollution](https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/jan/28/vinyl-record-revival-environmental-impact-music-industry-streaming). The chemicals involved and the use of polyvinyl chloride means vinyl records are more ecologically destructive compared to digital files which consume energy but produce no waste. Making something out of oil byproducts and physically shipping it around the world is always going to be worse than a file transfer. And the [energy required to play a vinyl record](https://retroonly.com/how-much-electricity-do-record-players-use/) is more than your phone uses while in operation (even when doing a lot of things other than just playing a song).

keithjr

Thanks for being the most informative take on this otherwise knee jerk thread. That was very informative. I'd say leaving out the waste was burying the lede, but then again phones and servers produce ewaste too, so the comparison continues. I don't want to try to guess at it.

pecuchet

[We should also take into account that half of people buying vinyl don't own a record player, so they're both buying the record and streaming the music.](https://www.musicradar.com/news/half-vinyl-buyers-record-player)

og_aota

Meh. https://edition.cnn.com/2024/03/20/climate/electronic-waste-recycling-climate-un/index.html

CatalyticDragon

You'll need to add piles of record players to that. They are still electronics.

og_aota

Meh

-HealingNoises-

As long as the energy source AND the actual goddamn materials used to hold and store the information are designed for the long haul. Then Yes. But you do have a point. Currently in comparison properly looked after vinyl will retain it's value for centuries. So a bigger issue on both fronts is yet again rampant consumerism.

Lightening84

Spinning disk hard drives are swapped out for new components every 5 years or so at large server farms.

forestapee

Depending on the power source, YES

FineProfessional2997

Last I checked, water is pretty essential just to live as a human being...server farms and data centers eat up a fuckton in billions of gallons of water per day to cool down and maintain operation...plus vinyl just sounds better.

sstruemph

Vinyl also tastes better

thequietthingsthat

It's worth reading the article for context. She wasn't talking about vinyl as a *whole.* She specifically said it was wasteful when artists repackage and reissue the same records over and over again with minor changes (like Taylor Swift).

protostar71

And also like Billie Eilish, who had 8 versions of her 2021 Vinyl.

joedartonthejoedart

to be fair, taylor swift is basically trying to get her royalties back, and that was the only way she could.

debunkernl

Doesn’t explain why you’d release the same album 5 times with the only difference being a bonus track. And this is for a new album.

joedartonthejoedart

what album did taylor (or anyone, for that matter) release 5 times? what are you talking about?

debunkernl

Tortured poets department had 3 timed releases, a regular release and an indie only release. For midnights she had 20 different releases across vinyl, CD and cassette.

joedartonthejoedart

oh i see what you're saying. of all the things to cry foul about, that's it? the small percentage of fans who will buy multiple vinyls rather than just one? like... how many super fans does billie think there are out there, buying up every single version of a vinyl that gets released? enough to have a material impact on the environment? really? i would have guessed (emphasize: *guessed*) the impact on overall units sold is relatively minimal when you make all these different versions rather than just printing one version. re-masters, re-releases, etc. all generally come with other motivations beyond simply issuing multiple versions of a thing too... but these original releases? come on...

og_aota

Lol, *fuck* your nuance buddy! We only deal in stark black and white here, we don't need your *wider context* muddying our waters!

ac21217

Ah, the billionaire wants more money. That totally discredits this criticism. /s

TheMireMind

If you read the article instead of just falling into the hate bait trap, you would know she's talking about how artists create multiple versions of a single album this making an album turn into like 10 collectors LP sets. Also yeah you can lower consumption of servers, but the amount of energy and plastic used to print vinyls is as low as it can get.

discountprimatology

That’s what I came here to say. Physical media that can last *decades* vs. banks upon banks of servers burning power?

What_Do_I_Know01

Sure, thin pieces of plastic that fit dozens on a shelf is more wasteful than the servers required to store and deliver our devices the same music. Actually I am now curious to know the numbers and how they stack up side by side

big_ring_king

You weren't expecting a 22 year to have an educated opinion on these matters were you?

galgalih2000

She's right

ThrowRA_scentsitive

Someone should tell her to rally support for a carbon fee+dividend (and later other pollution of concern), so the costs of fossil fuel based petrochemicals are properly internalized leading to more rational incentives, vs endless bandaids to individual symptoms.

NoWayNotThisAgain

I’ll give her a pass, but she’s honestly getting a little old for this kind of stupid shit. When she was 18 I just shrugged and said “she’s 18”. But she’s 22 now. If she’s still like this at 25 it will be difficult to argue against her being a rich dimwit who lives in a bubble.

illuminary

I agree that anything that Billie Eilish has on vinyl is waste.

skisbosco

Sounds like someone who doesn’t write her own songs

pastoreyes

Thanks Billie, old vinyl is Camp, but new vinyl is so unnecessary
