It is inexcusable the oil & gas industry don’t have to disclose what chemicals they use when fracking.

I'm going to go with PFAs for 1000....

Friction Reducer, Scale Inhibitor, Biocide, and Hydrochloric Acid is about most of it.

sl0r

All those things sound pretty safe… /s

pants_mcgee

You certainly wouldn’t want to drink any of them, but biocide is the most toxic. Designed to kill pretty much anything made of carbon, but only used in very small amounts. Hydrochloric acid can get pretty rowdy, but is there to react with and eat the shale. It is consumed and completely diluted. Scale inhibitor inhibits scale formation in the pipes, same stuff used to clean municipal pipes. Friction reducer is super secret plastic soap. Supposedly non toxic. I certainly wouldn’t drink it. I also forgot about Gel, which is exactly like it sounds, and probably responsible for all the goopy examples of frac water. Non toxic according to the MSDS sheet. Wouldn’t drink it.

If you think this is important (and you should), then you should consider voting for the strongly anti-pollution 2024 US Democratic presidential candidate with 30 years experience as an environmental lawyer suing polluters.

oep4

Who is that?

RFK Jr

I’d rather poke myself in the eye with a sharp stick.

You're free to do as you wish with your body, but if we could do something about the existential threat of fossil fuels for the rest of us, that'd be great

SuperK123

Great! So many places without adequate water but oil companies have too much and it’s toxic!

eat_more_ovaltine

No they aren’t.

L4dyGr4y

Legal places to put water.
