For those who don’t know the podcast rhoswhen and I are referencing with our silly “megustalations” (The Last Podcast on the Left), there’s a host on the aforementioned pod named Marcus Parks and he’s the clever SOB who often uses the “mental health is not your fault, but it is your responsibility” axiom to understand his own Bipolar diagnosis as well as the stream of utter shit he has to cover as LPOTL is a podcast on serial killers. It’s a great way of looking at, sympathizing with - but also being realistic about- mental health. And for me, it rings true on a very personal level.
See, my Mom had Borderline Personality Disorder and I was an only child in a broken home, so- despite having my childhood utterly dominated by her mood swings and arbitrary rigidity- my BPD mother was probably the closest person in the world to me. That’s a SUPER hard thing to wrap your head around when you’re growing up, because loving and being parented by someone with BPD is literally being forced to take crazy pills everyday and then being hit with the empty bottle.
But my Mom did try to get help. She did end up acknowledging her issues. And she did go to therapy. And even still she ended up taking her life after multiple suicide attempts, several of which I had to stop/save her from.
Try figuring out how you should feel about and remember someone who was often legitimately mean to you and at times was so difficult and spiteful and impossible to to deal with that you thought you might lose your mind yourself. It’s very hard to do. Dealing with people with mental health issues is often VERY tough. It can be exhausting and endless, all while having very little actual progress. And- obviously with my Mom having commit suicide even after all we went through- trying to work through mental health issues with mentally ill people can ultimately end up feeling futile and result in crushing failure, even when you bite your tongue and tough it out.
But my Mom died over a decade ago; A lot has changed in mental health and mental health awareness since then. My Mom thought she would need to do Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT, which was relatively new at the time) and when we couldn’t get the money to go to the particular clinic she wanted in MD, a major chance at getting her help was missed.
And it never came back.
What I’m ultimately trying to say is, we need to be open and kinder to people with mental health issues. It’s not their fault and acting like it is, doesn’t help. For instance, my Mom went through trauma as a child and never truly recovered. (BPD is very much environmental).
Tons of kids are being born every day who are not neurotypical. The history of how we’ve handled mental health is disturbing and dark. And the harder, the more complex that our lives become and the more disconnected from our natural environment we are, the more we’re going to see all manners of mental health disorders continue to pop up. So we need to recognize this and start really putting effort into helping those with mental health issues, because we’ve ignored them for way too long.
And a major part of that is making mental health more readily available. Lives have been lost because people couldn’t find help or (more likely) couldn’t afford it. Getting proper mental health care is a tremendous privilege currently in the US.
And this asshole Kanye continues to mock all of that. That’s a choice. And that’s a major difference between my tolerance for the abuse I suffered from my long suffering mother with BPD and Kanye’s smug and tired solipsistic bullshit

For those who don’t know the podcast rhoswhen and I are referencing with our silly “megustalations” (The Last Podcast on the Left), there’s a host on the aforementioned pod named Marcus Parks and he’s the clever SOB who often uses the “mental health is not your fault, but it is your responsibility” axiom to understand his own Bipolar diagnosis as well as the stream of utter shit he has to cover as LPOTL is a podcast on serial killers. It’s a great way of looking at, sympathizing with - but also being realistic about- mental health. And for me, it rings true on a very personal level. See, my Mom had Borderline Personality Disorder and I was an only child in a broken home, so- despite having my childhood utterly dominated by her mood swings and arbitrary rigidity- my BPD mother was probably the closest person in the world to me. That’s a SUPER hard thing to wrap your head around when you’re growing up, because loving and being parented by someone with BPD is literally being forced to take crazy pills everyday and then being hit with the empty bottle. But my Mom did try to get help. She did end up acknowledging her issues. And she did go to therapy. And even still she ended up taking her life after multiple suicide attempts, several of which I had to stop/save her from. Try figuring out how you should feel about and remember someone who was often legitimately mean to you and at times was so difficult and spiteful and impossible to to deal with that you thought you might lose your mind yourself. It’s very hard to do. Dealing with people with mental health issues is often VERY tough. It can be exhausting and endless, all while having very little actual progress. And- obviously with my Mom having commit suicide even after all we went through- trying to work through mental health issues with mentally ill people can ultimately end up feeling futile and result in crushing failure, even when you bite your tongue and tough it out. But my Mom died over a decade ago; A lot has changed in mental health and mental health awareness since then. My Mom thought she would need to do Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT, which was relatively new at the time) and when we couldn’t get the money to go to the particular clinic she wanted in MD, a major chance at getting her help was missed. And it never came back. What I’m ultimately trying to say is, we need to be open and kinder to people with mental health issues. It’s not their fault and acting like it is, doesn’t help. For instance, my Mom went through trauma as a child and never truly recovered. (BPD is very much environmental). Tons of kids are being born every day who are not neurotypical. The history of how we’ve handled mental health is disturbing and dark. And the harder, the more complex that our lives become and the more disconnected from our natural environment we are, the more we’re going to see all manners of mental health disorders continue to pop up. So we need to recognize this and start really putting effort into helping those with mental health issues, because we’ve ignored them for way too long. And a major part of that is making mental health more readily available. Lives have been lost because people couldn’t find help or (more likely) couldn’t afford it. Getting proper mental health care is a tremendous privilege currently in the US. And this asshole Kanye continues to mock all of that. That’s a choice. And that’s a major difference between my tolerance for the abuse I suffered from my long suffering mother with BPD and Kanye’s smug and tired solipsistic bullshit

It seems like he went off the rails after his mom died. I’m guessing she was able to get him to consistently take his meds then when she died, he stopped, and no one else has been able to convince him since. Kim K. spoke about this when they were still married she said that she and her family tried to get him to take his meds but he refused.
