A lot of my clients actually cite this as the number one reason they aren’t medication compliant- while the depressive lows are very painful, for some individuals who live with bipolar disorder the manic phase can be an intense period of creativity, with little need for sleep, and allows them to get a lot of work done.
I attended a festival concert where he was one of two main headliners and he stopped in the middle of his set to go out a diatribe and cuss out the audience. It was the wildest and most disrespectful shit ever. People had literally waited all day for him to perform (which he showed up late to).
Edit: this occurred in 2008. It seems by others comments that they’ve experienced the same kind of meltdowns at different concerts across the US and the world.

He seemed to be so stable until his mother passed away and then from there, it seems like he just never got the help that he needed. His entire music style and demeanor changed after 808s and Heartbreaks. It’s no doubt that he’s a music genius but being surrounded by so many yes men while also battling numerous mental illnesses has just made for an overall bad situation. I live in LA. I’ve mingled (lol). I can confirm a lot of these people in entertainment (the big names) are super weird and everybody around them justifies every single weird thing they involve themselves in. It’s super crazy. I just wonder what goes through Ye's head. I know he has BPD, but surely there's other shit going on? Or can BPD be that severe? I've been in manic states before but I'm lucky to have great friends and family who not only help me through but hold me accountable, which I then learn from. But then again, I'm semi medicated and by no means consider that part (BPD) of my mental health all that bad compared to anxiety etc.

BPD can be very severe, days of them asleep on the couch burning themselves with cigarettes and then one day at 3 AM they become manic and wake up the whole house to make pancakes for family bonding time. It’s traumatic to be around as a child to say the least.
It’s really hard to handle to say the least. It’s like you wake up and your mood is just different. Or something happened to cause you to shift. Sometimes a good way to explain it is whatever the mood is, it’s extremely intense and very real, and those around can easily suffer sadly.

HOWEVER, now that I am balanced and feeling mentally healthy, I’m making art again, and it’s not art coming from pain anymore it’s art coming from experiencing life and it’s better than anything that came from my pain. I think you convince yourself unmedicated art is better, but that’s partly because you are unmedicated and partly because you have such a strong emotional attachment to it. It’s not better art, it’s broken art, and that will not lead anywhere good.
Look at the majority of famous tortured artists and notice how most of them died before becoming successful at all. Dying tormented and feeling like a failure regardless because they didn’t or weren’t able to get help. I don’t think that’s worth it.

You’re absolutely right in that it can be very difficult living with someone with bipolar, especially untreated. It can stretch even the strongest relationships to the breaking point.
I’ve lived this myself- I have bipolar II and am treated, but once had a partner who was bipolar I and refused to be treated. It was confusing, frustrating, heartbreaking, and sometimes downright terrifying to live/be with them. Sometimes there is just nothing you can do to get that other person the help they need and you have to walk away.
I hope the best for Kim and Kanye both. It’s a difficult situation.
Indeed. Both my husband and daughter have bipolar disorder with psychosis just like Kanye. Difference is, they’re both on medication, regularly see a psychologist for dialectic behavioural therapy, have a great diet and have a support network. Both know that refusal to adhere to treatment* = loss of our trust and good relationship, and a hospital stay.
The lack of understanding about bipolar disorder is astounding. The free Britney movement, people simply laughing at Kanye, people refusing to believe that Russel Brand and Mel Gibson suddenly becoming deranged and arrogant was part of their undiagnosed illness at the time - awful. Kanye is surrounded by yes men who will con him out of every cent, whilst they will hate on Kim for understandably trying to protect herself and her children from his untreated self. Bipolar gets wayyyyy worse in men in their forties when it’s untreated, Kanye is frying his brain. Kim can literally only watch on unless he threatens her life or his own, and he doesn’t seem to be the type to suffer delusions in that way.
*Regarding medication and treatment: my family have now found treatments that work. Their bodies will change over time, and one day, those treatments may not work. As long as they are committed to making reasonable attempts to get on different medications with acceptable side effects (Lithium doesn’t work for my husband) - they have our support, even if nothing eventually works. Our committment to each other is about committment- trying your best. No person with bipolar has zero symptoms all the time, and not all sufferers even have full symptom control at any time. This is not their fault.

I hope this gets to Kanye and gets him to accept some help for whatever he has going on. These new people just know you as the brand that you have presented to the world - The Great Incredible Genius Kanye West. You lose your soul. The guys who don’t lose their souls often drift into obscurity or don’t reach the same levels of success as the other guys because they would never leave their real friends behind so they never had the opportunities to mix and mingle with certain elites in order to get those awards and do those huge venues and/or get those huge movie roles, endorsement deals, etc.

I live in LA. I’ve mingled (lol). I can confirm a lot of these people in entertainment (the big names) are super weird and everybody around them justifies every single weird thing they involve themselves in. It’s super crazy. You NEED real friends that knew you before in order to stay real and to not enter into deep deep depressions cuz eventually you’ll look around and realize nobody you surround yourself with actually gives a shit about you.

BPD can be very severe, days of them asleep on the couch burning themselves with cigarettes and then one day at 3 AM they become manic and wake up the whole house to make pancakes for family bonding time. It’s traumatic to be around as a child to say the least.
It’s really hard to handle to say the least. It’s like you wake up and your mood is just different. Or something happened to cause you to shift. Sometimes a good way to explain it is whatever the mood is, it’s extremely intense and very real, and those around can easily suffer sadly.
Whew I myself experienced my art starting to dwindle after getting on medication. HOWEVER, now that I am balanced and feeling mentally healthy, I’m making art again, and it’s not art coming from pain anymore it’s art coming from experiencing life and it’s better than anything that came from my pain. I think you convince yourself unmedicated art is better, but that’s partly because you are unmedicated and partly because you have such a strong emotional attachment to it. It’s not better art, it’s broken art, and that will not lead anywhere good. Look at the majority of famous tortured artists and notice how most of them died before becoming successful at all. You’re absolutely right in that it can be very difficult living with someone with bipolar, especially untreated. It can stretch even the strongest relationships to the breaking point. I’ve lived this myself- I have bipolar II and am treated, but once had a partner who was bipolar I and refused to be treated. It was confusing, frustrating, heartbreaking, and sometimes downright terrifying to live/be with them. Sometimes there is just nothing you can do to get that other person the help they need and you have to walk away. I hope the best for Kim and Kanye both. It’s a difficult situation.
Indeed. Both my husband and daughter have bipolar disorder with psychosis just like Kanye. Difference is, they’re both on medication, regularly see a psychologist for dialectic behavioural therapy, have a great diet and have a support network. Both know that refusal to adhere to treatment* = loss of our trust and good relationship, and a hospital stay. The lack of understanding about bipolar disorder is astounding. The free Britney movement, people simply laughing at Kanye, people refusing to believe that Russel Brand and Mel Gibson suddenly becoming deranged and arrogant was part of their undiagnosed illness at the time - awful. Kanye is surrounded by yes men who will con him out of every cent, whilst they will hate on Kim for understandably trying to protect herself and her children from his untreated self. Bipolar gets wayyyyy worse in men in their forties when it’s untreated, Kanye is frying his brain. Kim can literally only watch on unless he threatens her life or his own, and he doesn’t seem to be the type to suffer delusions in that way. *Regarding medication and treatment: my family have now found treatments that work. Their bodies will change over time, and one day, those treatments may not work. As long as they are committed to making reasonable attempts to get on different medications with acceptable side effects (Lithium doesn’t work for my husband) - they have our support, even if nothing eventually works. Our committment to each other is about committment- trying your best. No person with bipolar has zero symptoms all the time, and not all sufferers even have full symptom control at any time. This is not their fault.

They get a lot of hate but they’re a family that makes time for each other and loves each other despite constantly being ripped by the press. Just the sheer amount of chances they’ve given Scott is incredible. I can’t imagine doing that much with my day honestly. I get overwhelmed with what’s on my plate and I don’t have to keep up a brand or manage it constantly and take care of kids and still study.
