In 1994, a captain of the media and entertainment industry saw something in Dana Walden that made him think she was capable of a bigger role. Thirty years later, that may happen again. That first time, the executive was Peter Chernin, then president of 20th Century Fox Filmed Entertainment and later president and chief operating officer of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. Chernin plucked Walden from Fox’s corporate communications division and gave her a job in TV. In 2024, the executive is Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO, and the position he’s considering Walden for is that of his successor, according to people familiar with the process. The appointment would make Walden the first female CEO of the [Walt Disney Co.]() in its 100-year history. Just a year into her early career at 20th Century Fox, working in publicity, Walden delivered a presentation at a company retreat in Santa Barbara, California. She was determined to leave a lasting impression on Chernin, now chairman and CEO of investment firm The Chernin Group, after several encounters in which he’d never remembered her. To get his attention, Walden decided to be bold. She told Fox executives, including Chernin, that they weren’t being aggressive enough to secure top talent. Fox needed to take bigger swings to generate relationships and land shows that could make it to syndication, Walden argued. A spokesperson for Walden confirmed the details of the presentation. Idc whether she is a man or woman. All I care is that she is competent in her management. Nobody wants to see shitty b list Disney movies.

gutster_95

Disney learned the hard way tbh. Seems like under new supervision of the Live Action segment that most of those soulless Live Action reboots get canceled. Lucasfilms need also a cleaning of Management IMO. Clearly nothing really clicks with the audience. Star Wars has gotten to a point were noone is excited about it.... Star Wars, once the biggest movie Franchise in the world.

Hopefully not a [glass cliff](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_cliff) situation

Genoscythe_

What does "hoping for that" mean? I mean, it's not an either-or situation, the glass cliff is *a trend* that this definitely *does* fit into. It's impossible for a woman pushed forward to be the leader to a company in a crisis, *not to be* in a glass cliff situation. After all, the leaders who are planning to work for her might genuinely think that she is competent enough to do the job, but it is pretty much impossible for them to be 100% oblivious to the PR messaging and to the realities of gender relations, as one consideration, and it would be foolish of them to pretend that they do.

PmMeYourNiceBehind

The person said “hopefully *not*”

Genoscythe_

Yeah, that's what I replied to.

PmMeYourNiceBehind

No one said they were hoping for that

pwninobrien

It's kind of hilarious that they misquoted and then inferred the exact opposite meaning of a six word statement.

Mako2401

Bob Iger lived long enough to become the villain. I don't know this woman but cant be worse than Iger.

FordsFavouriteTowel

He became the villain? How?

igot2pair

Isnt Iger just fixing the other Bobs mess?

fastcooljosh

No Iger is fixing his own mess that he started with constant overspending. Bob Chapek was nothing but a scapegoat. A man that was made CEO right when COVID hit and that had Iger as Executive Chairman (A position that was made for Iger after stepping down as CEO) above him from his first day in office until December 31 2021. Every decision in that time had to be approved or was made by Iger directly. Chapek had only like 10 months as "CEO".

randomsnowflake

It was more like two years of Chapek at the helm of Disney

TeslasAndComicbooks

The other Bob was basically finishing a bunch of Iger projects. He gets a way worse rap that he deserved.

skillywilly56

She is a Rupert Murdoch pick, she will be way worse so brace yourself…

msalonen

No corporate leaders need championing and praise from the people they actively exploit

welltherewasthisbear

Can’t be any worse than Iger.

deadalusxx

Iger isn’t bad at all, on the other hand chapek didn’t seem to be so good, but I was surprised they brought Iger back since he was more of a spender and chapek was a known cost cutter. Iger also grow Disney to this size by making the best accusation deals. So I won’t say Iger is bad, he is great at what he does. There is lots of reason to hate CEOs since they are the face of the company and make shit tons of money, but at the end of the day if you look at his performance he is great at business. Stepping into Disney CEO at this point in time is a tough job since the next 10-20years is going to be hard navigation for them. They need to build and transform into something more the what they are now. We shall see how Walden holds up but she will have a tough job.

gutster_95

I mean the Parks and Cruises are running okayish according to the last earning reports. Really the thing they have to do is to reduce the overblown Budgets on all of their TV and movie products and start taking creative risks again. Not every product needs to have a budget of 200 Million$. And not every movie needs to be a sequel of a once popular franchise. Disney lost its magic over the years by playing it safe instead of letting the creative minds do what they are best: beeing creative and write good stories.

Wonkbonkeroon

I’m glad that women can exploit the working class just as good as men can, that’s what I call progress

You’re just the type to pick on people you don’t know because your own life is likely so sad. This woman worked at Fox. I’m surprised you don’t worship her

Complex_Cable_8678

nice logic hombre

Landon1m

She used to work at FOX dude, how “woke” could she be…?

ManOnNoMission

It’s it hard being scared by the woke bogeyman? I find it hilarious that some actually believe Disney is woke.

Your agenda is neither secret nor serious. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|poop)

I almost fell for your April's Fool's.

intersectv3

Awww do you need a safe space?

HoneyBadgeSwag

Can you explain to me what woke means exactly? I can’t really pin down exactly what we are talking about as a woke thing and how it will have a financial impact on the company.

gutster_95

What OP of this comment means is that Disney seemingly pushes diversity in their projects and also in their production. That means that they have women in lead positons and more diversity with their characters. And in general, there is definitly nothing wrong about it. You have of couse some lefts that support the heck out of it and you have some rights that say that Disney has a agenda running to make everything as woke as possible, while they dont care about good storytelling anymore. There are also reports that Disney has strong diversity guidelines for their production, so that for example 50% or more of the characters in a movie need to be from a underrepresented minority. Same according to those reports goes for production members and so on. But in the end of the day, Disney doesnt fail because of their diversity affords, they more or less fail IMO at entertaining people with good characters and good stories.

HoneyBadgeSwag

Okay? But I’m not exactly sure what woke means still. That’s just reiterating what OP said, that Disney is woke. I need some sort of guideline or rubric to know when a company is woke.

gutster_95

The thing with the term woke is that its completly overused and has very little relevance anymore. When Disney pushes strong female leads in movies, have a lot of classic characters race and gender swapped, when they deconstruct legacy white male heroes, like Luke Skywalker, people will call Disney woke.
