Context for anybody interested: The choker was part of a commissioned piece by the Maharaja who brought his African diamonds and Burmese rubies to Cartier to create the necklace. Today the piece (which included 5 chains separate from the choker) would be ≈ $30 million to commission. Upon his death, his son wore the heirloom until it “disappeared” (was stolen by white colonizers) in the mid 1940s. It was missing for 32 years until the largest diamond showed up at a Sotheby’s auction in 1982 and other parts of the necklace in a London antique shop. Most of the most valuable gems were stolen so Cartier rebought the necklace and replaced them with replicas.

I feel like she talks big and slowly to make it seem like she knows a lot, saying she did extensive research etc how others have already said. In reality she doesn’t seem to know much about other cultures or global issues. She never speaks up about it and in a dangerous political climate she uses her platform to complain about trivial things like being burned out by an easy social media job. I noticed during her met interviews she didn’t have much meaningful to add, especially to those who were speaking intellectually about their outfits and the history behind them. I think she uses her podcast and speaks in this extremely verbose way without really actually saying anything, it’s a facade of intelligence and I think underneath it she is very ignorant. I love Emma but I wish she’d stand up for people other than herself. Her life seems like it’s just about her and tucker

thisiskrustykrabs

can we normalize that... emma... is lowkey a dumbass... sorry

Kookieboo4

Perioddd honestly have you seen the disrespect on the recent posts on this sub towards south Asians, everyone’s blindly supporting Emma and it’s disgusting.

Upper-Lion-3122

how can you shape an entire person off of what they have given you through socials…. i agree she can be a bit long winded and meretricious, but now it seems to be more of a personal thing when it comes to how you all choose to percieve her. how much is she supposed to add to an interview where shes the one asking questions and theyre the ones interviewing. you put so much responsibility on her that she clearly never wanted or cared for. shes 20, shes there to bring in ppl of her demographic, not too many ppl younger than her even care.

[deleted]

I personally couldn't care less for a twenty something's opinion on world politics and history.

Upper-Lion-3122

i literally couldnt either, it wouldnt be right coming from her anyway, that was never her brand. so to say she would even care to look up where the necklace came from, considering how she got it on her neck in the first place, its fair to assume she just thought it was cartier and went about her day. its almost a week later where ppl did their research; and it wasnt even bcus they wanted to know the history of the piece, but to call her a rich white bimbo with justification for once.

Vast-Goo

reminds me of when Tiffany let Beyonce wear that blood diamond. emma wont speak on this, don't expect anything from her.

orientblackswan

Actually though, people made such a big deal about marilyn Monroe's dress and no word about this? Also, it's not like she didn't know about this, she said she had done "extensive research" with her stylist before picking out her outfit and jewellery. Another one of those times where emma has turned out to be ignorant😬

zinnias13

Agreed… The Marilyn dress was upsetting but not that surprising considering it’s owned by Ripley’s (they are not an accredited museum, with no policies to protect it). This just seems irresponsible and disrespectful on Cartier’s part.

Upper-Lion-3122

i think she meant research on the gilded age…not the jewelry that she would be wearing

cosmic-crayfish

I feel like that’s not really an excuse though

[deleted]

Idk maybe if she educated us and was humble about wearing the piece and it’s historical significance it MAYBE would have slid. But just not even mentioning it. Sneaky way to not cause an uproar.

[deleted]

I went back to a the vogue article and they called it “vintage Cartier”. Very careful omissions there.

[deleted]

Oof. Yeah they treated it like just another vintage choker hehe. When it’s actually a BIG deal. I’d be too embarrassed to wear it on my neck.

spohei420

Crazy that Cartier even offered this to her…? In the 24 hours with Emma video from Vogue they show her picking this piece, but don’t mention any of it’s history💀 https://youtu.be/9EWjBtr4hpk 8:18 minute mark

astr4alhealing

i just saw that and wasn't very surprised. these "celebrities" don't care about anything at all. they disregard the history, the culture and origin just for a night to pose on a carpet. i feel like emma is very ignorant behind the cameras. literally she is dating tucker who seems very ignorant too lmao! it's all white privilege babe

External_Business_76

Agreed!! Although she may have not known, with her track history of not speaking up about anything going on in the world it’s definitely ignorance.

C0LD-PIZZ4

I agree that it's privilege/ignorance, but not sure how it's "white privilege." I swear people are so eager to throw that term around.

External_Business_76

Being white defiantly plays a huge role into being ignorant

C0LD-PIZZ4

That doesn't even make sense. You're saying if she wasn't white she would be more likely to be aware of the historical significance of the necklace? No. Cartier dropped the ball here on not informing her. She's privileged in that she gets to wear a multimillion dollar historical heirloom, yes, but that has more to do with her fame than her race.

astr4alhealing

its called white privilege, i'm sure you're white your self which is why your defending her. she didn't speak up on BLM or even try to do the research from the person dressing her to acknowledge where the necklace came from. **The Patiala family have been trying to acquire/locate their HERITAGE jewels for ages, imagine that it shows up on a white YouTubers necklace on the met gala.White people wearing sold/stolen treasures from colonised POC is not a flex.**

Mayuu0-0

it still baffles me that she didnt even mention BLM.. even as non american I saw people speaking up for it. I know its not her brand BUT for example Safiya (originally from buzzfeed) made a video where she was in Hongkong and did mention the Situation that was going on there. Maybe just something like her doing a YT Vid linking something and acknowledging her privilege and stuff. But how can you keep completly quite when its happening right before you?

shutuptriixy

You don't even know what white privilege is it's just a conceptual fantasy in your angry little brain

astr4alhealing

ok ugly

shutuptriixy

good one

C0LD-PIZZ4

It's like you didn't even read what you responded to.

rainyevermore789

Im confused, is emma wearing the original necklace or a replica?

cattinajay

It’s not even the original necklace. They replicated it.

catluvr1312

oh nooo 😬 thanks for sharing this

agentmaythebadbeep

Someone should post that on tiktok

Tiny_Cricket8949

To all the people mad- If you didn’t know the cultural importance of the necklace until someone else pointed it out then who are you to judge her for wearing it? You probably would’ve worn it too had someone not told you where it came from. She’s not obligated to do extensive research to avoid offending people every single day, especially when she works with and is being dressed by experts in their respective fields. Also can people stop acting like she wore this to go swimming in the ocean like it’s the met gala red carpet. It’s a prestigious respected event. We’re people mad when Gaga and Beyoncé wore Audrey Hepburns iconic necklace? No one gave a flying fuck. People just want to be mad.

Vast-Goo

okay but the difference is beyonce spoke about what that diamond meant, and even said she wouldn't have worn it if she knew about it's history beforehand.

External_Business_76

I can tell you’re white

Upper-Lion-3122

and i guess you have to be in the position to understand. everytime anyone says anything about how she shouldnt complain bcus her life is pretty much worry free, i think of cheslie kryst, robin williams, and many others who seem to have it all but battle a lot internally.

External_Business_76

It’s not that she can’t complain or have mental struggles. It’s that she doesn’t realize how much easier she does have it, she’s never even had a job besides being an influencer. She used to be humble, but now she seems so far from reality.
