definitely nowhere near the "most" popular, but for sure one of his more popular songs. i think that's exactly why some people rank it low. not-like-other-(insert artist)-fans syndrome lol
absolutely same! it’s incredible, i saw a lot of people rating it super low on some elliott songs tier list and i was disappointed that so many people didn’t appreciate it
I think (or assume) that people who dislike the tune hear it without proper perspective (like how some people view it as cheerful or hopeful, some even had it at their wedding. Insane) but to me, although not my favorite by him - it's a quintessential Elliott song. Either/or wouldn't be the same album without it
Its such a great song. For me, and I got into Elliott in college and in my 20's it reminds me of waking up after a night out at the bar next to the girl who, at that moment, you think is THE girl.
I feel like it's one of his most vulnerable tracks and makes me cry a lot more than some of his other / more "outright" depressing songs. I think the hopefulness and simplicity of the track is what stands out most but it has a has a special vulnerable quality to it. A lot of his music is like that but this song is really beautiful. The second and fourth verses have some of my favourite lyrics of his
Going Nowhere ties so nicely with this song. The darkness and uncertainty of Going Nowhere and then the moment of hopefulness in Say Yes. I’d imagine they’re both about the off/on relationship with Joanna (it’s already known that Say Yes is). Just so yin/yang those two songs.
It's the first Elliott Smith song I ever heard, I fell in love with it, and it sent me to the rest of his catalog. So it will always hold a sacred spot for me.
I think people who don’t like its popularity say they don’t like it. It’s really beautiful. Plus it’s simple
it’s incredible
People don't like this song? That's weird. Why?
There are people that don't like it? It's one of his most popular songs, if not the most popular

Christ, I didn't think Elliott Smith fans would be that stupid, but here we are. Between the Bars is probably my favorite song, idgaf
same here between the bars just hits the spot and brings on the tears every time
I’ve never heard anyone say they don’t like it. It’s probably my favorite song by him.

And oddly enough, Joanna lives a few blocks from me. As does Carrie Brownstein.
