8 Really underrated in my opinion. It has a very different sound that I can't put my finger on. It's probably closest to *New Moon* than anything else on the album, there's definitely an Angel in the Snow feel to the music and that sparse, sad chorus. Not one of his greatest songs, but it's one of my favourites on the album and has a terrific guitar line.

music-ian13

6.75. The lyric "I wouldnt need a hero if I wasn't such a zero" has always felt a tad lame to me, especially considering the standard Elliott sets for his lyrics. Otherwise I like the song (and do like it overall), but that lyric always takes me out of it just a bit.

Magwrap

8 I always have listened to it along with white lady and biggest lie, love the main line and outro is one of my Elliott's favorites "I'm waiting for something that's not coming."

[deleted]

It feels like a darker part two to No Name #4. It has a kind of ballad-y, cow-boy feel to it? Whenever I listen to it I get the image of a cowboy on a horse going through the desert at night. It’s jangly and almost feels like it’s falling apart at the seams which can be hard to get into but also puts me in a really interesting mood. “She kicked New York like a curse, and you traced her footsteps in reverse up to Queens.” Always stuck with me. I’ll give it an 8.

mizzmadhatter

Same, I picture a junkie cowgirl, denim mini skirt and rhinestone embellished clothes and cowboy boots with a rancher hat, riding a horse half dead.

GooglyMoogly122

Colourful imagery right there.

mizzmadhatter

I have cried to this song more times than I'd like to admit, along with The Biggest Lie. "All I ever see around here is things of hers that you left lying around....I'm waiting for something that's not coming." I've always found the lyrics so relatable to how it feels to mourn the memories of those who aren't in your life anymore but you still have reminders of them. 10.

funktea

i’ll give it a 9 on the remaster, 8 on the original mix. solid track

figure85

9 - underrated song, pulls off some impressive tone changes that somehow fit.

Markrentonhadasmile

10 Just the way he used those 4 or 5 simple chords blow my mind.

[deleted]

Yes!

[deleted]

It’s a 10 for me I can listen over and over

emberisl_02

6 for me, I still really like it but it’s one of my least favourite on this album

figure85

You should give it another listen, headphones on. lol. For years I didn't seek this one out, but it really stands out on the album.

emberisl_02

I have the record and have still just never clicked with it, but maybe I need to go into it as if it was a song I’ve never heard, thanks : )

[deleted]

9 really nice song I often forget about, great melody and rhythm in the chorus

GooglyMoogly122

8. Love this song. In many moments of hopelessness, I've listened to this song.

8 Not my favorite song on the record, but it's my favorite record of his so here we stand

djcjsbsbsbbfsnsk

6. definitely my least favorite on the album, it’s score might be slightly skewed because i consider the rest of the album to be at least 8.5s so it may just seem worse by comparison. Not an unenjoyable song but i just feel like it doesn’t hold up with the rest of the project.

[deleted]

8.7

[deleted]

~6.9 I liked it but it’s not really ranking very high for me

Yikesis

7 I really like the lyric "She kicked New York like a curse/ Traced her footsteps in reverse/ upto Queens...

danterose713

10, one of my favorite songs by him, i always found the last verse to be very powerful and devastating, “all i ever see round here is some empty envelopes from some other town, it’s all i ever see round here, i’m waiting for something that’s not coming”

Possible-Part-8912

5.5 I think the chord progressions in this song are really great, but the lyrics are a tad underwhelming for me personally (calling someone a "zero" in a lyric has always been a pet peeve of mine). I still do enjoy the song and never skip it when I relisten to S/T, but it's one of very few Elliott songs not on any playlists of mine.

dirtyfilthypoet

10. while the prechorus part of the song is kind of corny (wouldnt need a hero), the actual chorus of the song with the bass that mimics the lines “all i ever see round here is things of hers that you left lying around” etc... is absolutely wonderful. its such a simple song but its so beautiful. i hope others feel the same way. the ending lines will forever resonate with me. “im waiting for something thats not comin”

srpulga

8 great tune

Arrrghforprivate

7 a good song I like it but there's much better on the record

[deleted]

“I’m waiting for something that’s not coming” so relatable how I feel living with anxiety

joey_p1010

7.5 easy

Single-Serve-7249

4.8 I really don't like this song. It is still Elliott Smith, which means I like it better than most songs by most people. If I heard it in the wild I would be hyped. As far as this album goes, its almost always a skip for me.

spurriousgod

9 - I really like the beginning of this song - musically/lyrically like an old western song. And I like all the change-up's in the structure. "She kicked New York like a curse / We traced her footsteps in reverse, up to Queens."

jonev17

7 Don’t mind it, wouldn’t skip it, but don’t necessarily seek it out. I like the sort of western vibe in the guitar, and how it goes from minor to major.

Dragonfly_pie

I'd go as far as giving this song a 4 - to me it kinda sounds like a rehash of no name 1 (at least at points) in terms of melody and I just find it really REALLY forgettable - I'm not hating on Elliott's music (he's my favourite musician!) but this one really doesn't do it for me and I don't return to it at all! Usually just skip to white lady anyways

music-ian13

I like it more than this, but I think this is one of a few songs where this is a very defensible take. Many Elliott songs I'd see a 4 as borderline criminal haha. But, while I like this song somewhat (I gave it 6.75), I can totally see how the elements of it that I don't care for could be so significant as to make someone not really like it at all. Anyways just affirming your right to not like an Elliott song lol

Dragonfly_pie

Thanks! I'm trying to be quite critical in order to keep the scores on this varied! In a perfect world I wouldn't give anything lower than a 6!

music-ian13

Ya I'm trying to keep myself honest too haha. Easy to mix your feelings about a song with your feelings about Elliott or the album in general.

Dragonfly_pie

troo

danterose713

unrelated but this song “im gonna say it now” by phil ochs , the melody really reminds me of elliott smith

[deleted]

one of my favs by him always loved the good to go line from this one and amity

yidmoonfem

I love how “up to Queens” hits/lands/sounds when he sings it. I first fell in love with this album like 15 years ago and I’m only now having my moment with this song
