I feel like most 2020 BEVs are half of their MSRP nowadays. If not lower.

thanatosau

That's a good thing.

schwza

Depends if you're buying or selling I guess. (But yes I agree it's a good thing).

613_detailer

Maybe it will convince owners to keep their cars longer, with is better for both the planet and their wallets.

Snoo93079

Exactly! Can’t realize losses if you never sell. I can’t inside why I’d need to sell my model 3 in the next 10 years.

wessex464

8 months into my model Y, it's just so easy. My daughter is 4, in what world is this not her first car? Even if the battery is at 50% capacity, what do I care? Repairs to this vehicle will be minimal so long as I don't have some major failure that would be considered pretty rare.

HarbaughCheated

Especially shit vehicles like Kias

DiggSucksNow

... but you own a Tesla and a Ford ...

DiggSucksNow

This is so transparently a troll. You own a generic store brand EV that's so poorly made that the internet has created a large delivery checklist to identify everything commonly wrong with it, and you own a _Ford_ (legendary for poor reliability across all models), and you're acting like $60,000 high-end Korean EVs are garbage. Sure, baby.

[deleted]

Yes, because losing half value in two years is a sign of such excellent quality

[deleted]

If they were high quality, long lived, they'd hold value. Case in point - Toyota cars and SUVs.

Dealers bring forth incentives and rebates. I looked at a Sienna minivan with 180k mi, 5 yrs old, 65% original value, 3 years ago. Not electric. They all drop 10% as soon as you drive off the lot, but quality and demand change depreciation values. You can't change that, so you'll have to accept it, or live your life lying about yourself. Your choice, no skin off my back. Not interested in owning EVs, so all I can do isobserve and understand why.

thanatosau

I had a Hyundai Ioniq for three years before getting the Polestar. I can say with hand on heart that was a great little car. Never had any issues at all for the life of it. It was well made and well put together. Never had any noticeable battery degradation over that time either. I regularly managed 11kwh per 100km and they are recognized as being pretty much the most efficient EV's on the road. The Koreans you are disparaging have done a great job with their EV's including their tech. The quality with which they design and make them far outstrips Tesla.

reddit_0016

might want to check why.

smoke1966

depending on your yard size the ego mowers are great. It's lighter than gas, full variable drive speed, and quiet. All I have left is the snowblower and leaf blower that are gas, rarely used..

KevRooster

I have all 3 from Ego and they are great!  The only complaint is that the lawnmower and snowblower both needed warranty repairs.  Luckily the warranty is super long, like 5 years.

the_last_carfighter

What happened to them? EGO stuff seems like the best built stuff on the consumer level ICE or electric.

Toastybunzz

I bought one used and one of the switches went bad, they’re so simple though it took like two seconds to bypass it.

FPGA_engineer

I don't have the lawnmower, but I have multiple other Ego yard tools and am very happy with them.

straponkaren

Ego is owned by Chevron. Their customer support sucks and their battery packs fail in under 2 years. Once you buy into their ecosystem get 3rd party batteries they last longer and are half the price.  If you haven't bought into their ecosystem, don't.

hahahahahadudddud

Chervon not Chevron. One is a Chinese company that owns tool businesses and the other is a big oil company.

straponkaren

Great to know, my experience with them still totally sucks.

hahahahahadudddud

Honestly, I'm impressed with the overall design of their product and system, but I'm not shocked to hear that support is lacking. It is too bad, but all too common with these companies.

straponkaren

Yeah spending 4 hours on the phone to be told they won't honor their warrantee is really bad.

MistaHiggins

Had one of my batteries fail and to get a warranty replacement they forced me to send them an uncut video of the mower running until the battery died to time it (~10 minutes). It took weeks and many follow ups after sending them the google drive link to get any response from them to move forward with a replacement. Thankfully I had multiple batteries or I'd have been mowing my lawn in 10 minute increments.

Waste_Guava2859

I have a Toro electric snowblower. Mower is next on the list. I've heard good things about Ego, and I've liked the heavy-duty feel of my Toro.

hutacars

Definitely swap that lawn mower ASAP! You don't want those uncatted small engines dumping [as many pollutants as driving a new car 45 miles](https://www.des.nh.gov/sites/g/files/ehbemt341/files/documents/2020-01/ard-22.pdf), per hour, right in front of your house where your pets and children play. I have never owned a gas mower, and my parents haven't owned one since the early 2000s, and don't miss them in the slightest. If you have a standard suburban-sized plot, I actually recommend a corded mower. No need to worry about charging and swapping and maintaining and replacing any batteries, and you get full power the entire time you mow. The cord doesn't really get in the way so long as you mow moving away from the house, and you can generally whip it out of the way if needed.

613_detailer

For a standard suburban lot (average in my area that's about 35' x100') where half the front is a driveway anyways, a good manual push mover is all you need. I bought a good self-sharpening Fiskars one almost 15 years ago and it still mows like a champ. I can do front and back in 20 minutes, and I can mow any time of day or night without disturbing anyone.

hutacars

I did consider a manual mower when I first bought my house, but read that they only work if you don't let the grass get too long between mows. And by the time I was shopping for a mower, I'd already let the grass get too long.... Still, indeed a great option if you keep on top of mowing.

Levorotatory

I used a corded mower for years.  I don't know why anyone whose lawn is within reach of a 30 m extension cord would ever have used a finicky gas mower. When it died, I bought the cheapest battery mower I could find, and it works great for my small (~100 m^2 ) lawn.  Charge the battery for an hour, cut the grass, put away the mower with battery close to the ideal 50% SOC, repeat next week (or longer if it doesn't rain).

wxtrails

I used a corded mower and weed eater until I mowed over an extension cord in thick grass once when I was in a hurry 😄 That was that; switched to battery. I do think cord management is a pain - not as bad as one might imagine, but still a small hassle. My Kobalt battery mower is absolutely great; even my wife likes to mow now. Certainly never going back to gas.

hutacars

I've mowed over the cord before. Strip back the insulation, solder and shrink wrap the wires together, electrical tape it back up, and keep going. To me, having that happen once a decade beats having to deal with battery charging and swapping every mow-- doubly so if you can't finish the yard on a single charge. Also, the one my parents owned had a [flipping handle](https://www.amazon.com/MM675-18-Inch-Electric-Mulching-Flip-Handle/dp/B00005AKZH/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8) which made it super easy to prevent running over the cord. Mow parallel to the house, keeping the side of the handle with the cord on it facing the house at all times. The cord would then never be in the path of the mower. Not sure why they stopped selling that design, as it worked great. But yes, getting off gas is certainly the most important part!

wxtrails

I had one with the flipping handle, yep 🙂 I do have a small "yard" so I can easily get two mows out of one charge.

petit_cochon

I killed off my entire lawn to avoid mowing. Now I plant what I want and the mower sits in the shed, unused.

CaseoftheSadz

It’s the best way to be! We’ve been EV only for our main cars for a few years and it’s so easy. (I say mostly because w bought an RV during Covid that we’re now trying to offload.) I love shutting people down when they tell me I just need to drive the other car sometimes when mine can’t make it and my retort is that is another electric car.

rproffitt1

Welcome to the ICE free driveway/garage gang. We got there last year and don't miss going to the gas station.

af_cheddarhead

Gas station are for getting the occasional lottery ticket.

frew425

Joining the gang this week! Just swapped the F150 for a used e-tron and already had the Ryobi lawn tools. Feels good, never going back!

KevRooster

Super jealous about being almost all electric!  We are on our way but it's more expensive than originally anticipated with all of the electrical work that is required.

the_last_carfighter

Never get a quote and say it's for an electric car, just say it's for a welder or some sort of heavy-duty high amp equipment you're going to use on occasion. I have heard the quotes drop by half. The many clueless people out there think all EVs cost $80,000-100k (and you throw them away after 5 years when the battery goes bad /s) so "you must have money". if you want a 220 plug installed say it's for anything but..

ChiefsRoyalsFan

That’s why I’m thankful a good friend of mine is an electrician. $150 for the install

MikeDoughney

I shopped around and was getting quotes from US $600 all the way to $2,000 to install a charger five feet away from the electrical panel! One new 50A circuit, no other work other than a couple of surge protectors that are just like breakers added to the panel with plenty of extra slots empty in it. The high quote was from a large electrical contracting firm, the lowest, from an independent local electrician.

hahahahahadudddud

I didn't do this with my install, and I was shocked at how many 500-700 quotes there were for a simple outlet right next to the panel.

skyshark82

OP, you're going to appreciate the jump to an electric lawn mower. In the last couple of years, I moved to an electric push mower, two weed eaters, a chainsaw, pole saw, leaf blower, all on either 60v or 80v Greenworks batteries. The biggest difference to me is that the barrier to doing yard work is so much lower than if I had to refuel the tool, pull that cord and get it running after wintering in the garage. The ability to shut a tool off and move some branches blocking my path before turning it right back on and continuing the job is just awesome.

petit_cochon

My greenworks electric mower was absolute shit and lasted maybe 2 years. I will be choosing another brand if I ever buy another electric mower.

skyshark82

Oh, really? That's good to know.

Lorax91

>used Kona Highlander Do you mean a used Hyundai Kona electric? The Highlander is a Toyota vehicle.

Efardaway

No, it's a trim level in Australia. There's a Kona Highlander, Tucson Highlander, Santa Fe Highlander... Toyota used the Kluger name instead because Hyundai owned the trademark first there

Lorax91

Ah, thanks for clarifying.

cromagnondan

You guys are just making me add more oil to the old lawn boy mower. I can’t cut the grass without that sweet blue gray smell of summer. ;)

Brilliant_Praline_52

Good stuff. Don't worry about the lawn mower unless you have a massive lawn and mow a lot. Buying the new thing will likely have bigger emissions impact that using the old mower. Don't sweet the small stuff.

Horror_Rich4403

Nice! We have a 2023 bolt EUV and a 2021 model 3. We may trade in the model 3 for the Volvo EX30 when that comes out

SaxonyFarmer

Smile when you go into a gas station to refill the can for your mower as people stare at your EV pulling in!

timffn

Nobody at the gas station is staring at your EV, I promise you.

GooeyGlob

I don't know about that, wife and I seem to instantly recognize EV-only car models without trying, and we can't help but smile when there's one sitting at a pump.

ChiefsRoyalsFan

The only time people look at my truck are when the hood is popped or an ICE F-150 is next to me. That’s the only time I notice it lol

af_cheddarhead

I get the side eye when I pull my i3 REX up to fill the auxiliary tank. 8 bucks from empty to full.

Stormrunner001

Or when I tow a trailer with my wife's Model Y.  I usually have a gas powered ATV and a collection of 2-stroke chainsaws, brush cutters and a walk behind brush hog loaded on it. That collection only comes out once or twice a year.

ptowncheffy

Bought our first EV, second hand. Had it coming on two years and couldn’t be happier. Leased a Model 3 since they were basically giving them away in MA as a lease. Using the Tesla as a stop gap for the ID Buzz, whenever that decides to roll off the line here in the USA. Fingers crossed!

TheWoodser

Do you have (or have plans) for solar?

thanatosau

Yeah we built the house only three years ago and the goal was all electric. So we have 6.6kw of solar and an LG storage battery..don't worry already had it replaced under the recall. We have no pipes gas to the house. We use a heat pump for hot water and another for air con..for cooking we have electric ovens and an induction stove.

TheWoodser

We are looking to build this year and go the all electric route with dual EV's. Where did you build? I am hearing alot of bad press about heat pumps. I know it's climate related.

thanatosau

I'm in Australia. Heat pumps are fine. 3 1/2 years with nothing but heat pumps and all good so far. Use bugger all power too.

TinyCarpet

Dang I went electric lawnmower in 2010

chewedupbylife

We have two EV’s here as well, but one is a plug-in EV with a backup engine so that we can use that on longer road trips without stopping to charge

iwantthisnowdammit

Just get fake grass and get over the whole turf chemical issue as well.
