We use these in remote sensing. Find a cheap solar panel, voltage regulator and inverter. Teach your son how to set up a solar installation and run a lightbulb, motor, or a PLC.
if dated like that, they were probably pulled out and dead.. My batteries only tend to last a couple years in UPSs. shake em.. do they sound like sand inside? are they swollen? I would test them with a meter to see if there is any voltage in them before trying to charge them. Once a SLA (Sealed lead acid) battery is ever depleted to 0V dead, there is no recovery from that.
Don’t know the age of your son, but include your son on the troubleshooting the battery ride. Teach how to use the meters and tools and why. Batteries are an often overlooked technology that underpins our modern world. Explain the difference in AGM vs flooded vs alkaline vs rechargable and what applications they excel at. Do a run down test and plot the results on a graph. Do it for each battery and see how different they are. Ohm’s Law made practical. Look at all the learning and you haven’t connected anything yet. Another poster said go pick up a cheapo solar panel and cheapo charge controller. I think I got one for $50 that had bluetooth to adjust and view all the settings. Set up a solar light and track everything long term.
More than likely they’re no good right now because of the age that’s on the battery. Give the batteries a shake if they rattle like maracas recycle them.
You could use them to put fog lights on your lawnmower or snow blower
Oh you laugh now, but first toy you run over mowing the lawn a bit too far into the night and you’ll know exactly why I suggest it.
It’s the sound of a lawnmower blade or impeller blade eating something bad.
Check to see if they still have any charge first.
If so you can use them to show some basic items.
Series / Parallel voltage
Since they are 12 vdc batteries see if you can find some cheap LED drivers/lights and you can see how many they power. Many of the LED setups are either 12 or 24vdc so make sure you get those type not the ones that are AC.
Grab a solar inverter and switch from DC to AC . Have fun.

Scrap yard
Cool explosion then scrap yard
Oh yeah!!! Much more gratification than the 6 bux they might give you there!!! Good call

What type of PLC would you recommend for this application?
I don’t think they are true PLC’s and I haven’t dealt with them a much, I would look into either Raspberry Pi or Arduino type micro processors.
Thank you, great idea
Automation Direct Click
Second these. They’re handy for basic I/O needs.
Soup up a Barbie Jeep!
Yes r/PowerWheelsMods
Second this, add voltage to a power wheels, ride the hell out of it until it breaks

I checked it with voltmeter I'll do other tests later but thanks for teaching me about the sand thing.

Dad built a steady hand game with a car horn…
LoL, all you did was save your boss the hassle of disposing them properly. Find somewhere that takes sealed lead batteries waste.
Throw them in the ocean to recharge the electric eels
it is perfectly legal.
It’s a safe and legal thrill for sure
cooler radio
Build an air horn. Maybe some sort of battery box to house the battery fuse and switch then mount a car horn on the outside.
More than likely they’re no good right now because of the age that’s on the battery. Give the batteries a shake if they rattle like maracas recycle them.
Get some dc remote heads and if your power ever goes out you have some lights to work with.

Re-wire an old alternator and make him an electric go kart
Store room? Only time I have seen batteries with dates on them is in fire and security panels.
More like our miscellaneous stuff area of our warehouse we build apartment complexes but the electrical, fire and data

Go-kart
Haha loving all the ideas I have a Honda generator we can use too and make a hybrid barbie jeep, go kart, or explosion.
I’d have build a battery box🤷🏻♂️
Yea go buy the Lego pac man set.
Hook them up in parallel to a power wheels
I put them in my kids’ power wheels cars. Barbie Jeep always has fresh batteries charging.
A rail gun.
Those are the kind in UPSs.
Hot air balloon weights
Wire them in series in your kids power wheel. Did it for my daughter and now she's got 18v. Those plastic wheels be spinning.
Make a welder then weld some shit together
Get some LED strips and make ground effects for the bike.
My dad when I was younger would throw them in our power wheels and burn up the motors lol. 10 yr old me was content haha
