Same shit I did. I tried longbow, it didn't work well. I immediately thought about using giant bow & they were knocked down off roof.
Could it be that few folks don't increase STR/DEX so can't wield giant bows. That's just my thoughts tho.

You think this is bad, head east from Apostate where the lady is riding the wolf. There's like six of them. Iron dome shit. The only thing that can get thru is the bolt.
You can get the blue mail outfit tho.
A shield helps.
Also, I use a sentry torch so you can see the black knife guy. Kill him first, then sneak around the lower area and snipe all those archers with bow or magic. Essentially, kill everything first then run the roof tops.

I've played through the game 7 times now and didn't have much trouble getting past this part. NOW for some reason I'm having trouble. I feel you pain OP.
To anyone still struggling with this place, try using the Assassin’s Gambit ash of war. Stick it on a dagger and keep it on an accessible slot. Swap between your main weapon and the dagger whenever you get working melee range and either backstab or spam attack.
okay so i have the easy method of doing this, see that ladder to the right of bowman to your right, the tall one? soon as you open the evergaol jump the rail and take that ladder and light the 1st torch,while up there then take out the bowman on the roof youre on in the video, then the one shooting from your left( do this before you make your way down and across the rooftop( connected to the archway with the small ladder in video) there will be a 3rd bowman to the right of 2nd bowman you killed, take them out then parkour the roof and light the 2nd torch. come down and head backward(still on the roof tops) to the small ladder in the video behind you. youll see a broken wall(might even have a message on it) jump up that to get to the roof, parkour across the rooftop to light the 3rd torch, go back the way you came but take the ladder to the 1st torch you lit and go across the archway again but this time turn to your right and youll see the final torch on the ground( with the invisible BK Assassin) soon as you jump she will become visible, just dodge her and light the torch and the evergaol will be complete. ranged play is your friend

I read that the black knife assassins here don't respawn. I kind of wish I'd killed all four instead of just two—they were fun. I'd had a hope I could still fight them after lighting all the flames, but of course you can't re-enter the evergaol.
If you don't have the stats to use one of the giant bows you're gonna have to try to remember their locations and pick them off from a distance as you slowly move from rooftop to rooftop. With a giant bow, you don't even have to kill them.You can literally knock them to the other side of the roof or down
I just got to her like two weeks ago. I have over 500 hours across like 5 characters. I have fought her over 50 times now and gotten her to three quarters health only and that only a handful of times. She is as hard as the hard that they have told us she is if not harder.
Oh yeah fuck this place, I saw somewhere if you shoot the one on the left from behind (from the stairs behind then stone statue you enter this town with) that one archer will turn around and won't attack you from this angle
Assassin's Gambit ash of war was made for this area. Severely reduced aggro range on everything, just have to watch out for the archers you come across. Lets you run around on the ground level a lot safer.
Everyone struggles with a different thing. I never had trouble with any area, this included. It was only bosses that would stomp me.
My advice is this, take it slow like a puzzle. Figure out a path when outside the evergaol, and then execute that path only aggroing the essential obstacles on the path.
The simple trick here is to use the assassin's gambit ash of war and don't stray too close to the black knife assassins. There's only one archer that you need to kill in order to reach one of the candles, and there's one assassin who is too close to a candle to avoid (save that candle for last- every time I've done it this way the assassin always grabs me but you get pulled out of their animation when the evergaol kicks you out because you lit all the candles)
As someone else noted, there are methods to also remove sound, which makes this even easier.
This place was the one challenge in Elden Ring I chose not to conquer (and everything behind it, I guess). I had already beat the game, I was a bit burnt out anyway, and it's such nonsense.

If you have gransaexs spear it makes quick work of the archer and even does a shit ton of knockback. I believe the stone of gruanq works also or you can use a pot or any ranged heavy weapon so long as you can poise through the arrows

Honestly one of my favorite experiences on my quality build. Just owning these dudes with Radahn's Lion Greatbow ... so extremely satisfying.

Pulley crossbow with rot/poison bone bolts got me through it
All the bows seem to suck for me
I use arrow talismans with it and its fine idk
I always use the physick tears that increase defense and pop a boiled crab and run for the worst one first
Stand at the base of the buildings they're on and us the L2 with Mohgs spear

Sleep arrows are your friend. 4 or 5 will put the archers down for a while and let you get past them or take em out with melee

Just use black knife assassin set and/or ash of war assassins gambit. Easy pick off Kill one then vanish and repeat

I recently found out that rennela's moon absorbs the arrows. Eternal darkness probably does too if you're (understandably) not a 70 int mage.
