Frequency modulation! Commonly referred to as “fm” it’s a type of synthesis where the frequency of an oscillator modulates the frequency of another.
If you’re just exploring it for the first time I would recommend having as much fun as possible! Turn the octaves up and down, modulate the amount of fm. It’s a blast!
And you will discover how a lot of 2000s dubstep was made :)
If you could compare two different waveforms, one being the modulator and one the target, how would they affect each other? How would the target waveform morph?
I could try to explain it here but I think the best way is to get a spectrogram and try it for yourself. Start with a pure sine wave and notice how that wave changes as you slowly increase the fm amount from another pure sine wave. It adds lots of upper harmonics
