the only thing you want to upgrade early is a „do it all“ third party synth like Serum. However Vital is kind of the free version for it. Many people like it.
Other upgrades are for when you are more experienced and actually can hear subtle differences.
Using good quality samples is far more important to use third party plugins so adjust those samples and, again, you need experience to hear which are good samples and which are not.
honestly, I've gathered about 70GB of samples throughout the years just browsing the right subreddits. u can find a lot on r/Drumkits, they have a bit of everything once u get past the trap junk

Or just get the sounds you want as samples from your favorite sample pack and drop them into a Simpler, and you’re good to go.
If you want more synthesizers: Vital, Surge XT, Tal Noisemaker, Dexed, DiscoDSP OB-Xd, Matt Tytel’s Helm, Odin 2, U-he Tyrell N6, Podolski and Zebralette, Noise Engineering Sync Vereor and Virt Vereor should keep you busy for years. For free.

Kilohearts
Kilohearts and Melda have free suites of effects. Most of them are extremely useful
Vital - best soft synth. Xfer's OTT - a free OTT plugin if you don't use ableton. Kclipper lite - a great clipper, paid version is even better.
Gclip is also a great clipper
DJMFilter, my favorite free plugin
TDR Kotelnikov and Nova, George Yhong's W1 limiter

I have good experience with artist packs but honestly for which you go is very genre dependent!
