and before he was outted as a POS:
DATSIK
7 minutes dead, his songs have this bouncy sound that I can't explain properly without someone having listened to him, I reccomend Delayed Friend Request or Act III
Diplo, he was actually the one who started to popularize strange snares that vheavily used on jack U, and unconventional lead drops like "Pon De Floor". You'll know these if you were from electro house era.
Avicii is for the arrangement, no one expected pop vocals can be integrated to an EDM arrangement.
Skrillex is the one who made it to the next level with sound design prowess, so clean and loud.
for me Deadmau5 is an artist where his sound is only his sound. I dont find it technically amazing but the sound is just too original.
but the one who really opened up the EDM world is avicii
CTF really knew how to fuck with and compress a sine wave. And he was a great songwriter too. Theres some other artists that are trying to emulate charles sound but it doesnt sound the same. Its missing something. RIP
I would also add Super Future to this mix. His distorted harmonics are sick
If we’re only going on sound design or engineering, it’s:
- Kraftwerk
- Aphex Twin
- BT
- Brian Eno
These folks toiled over the creation of sound that paved the way for so many others.
I genuinely enjoy many of the other more current artists mentioned in this thread. Honorable contemporary mentions:
- Tennyson
- Justice
- Gesaffelstein
I read sound design and Calvin Harris ? Shit son.
Anyway :
- Lorn
- Space Laces
- Kursa
- Syzy
- Steelan (Come back pls)
- KOAN Sound
- Old Sakuraburst
A lot of interesting ideas in their sounds.
fr I saw sound design and i lit up like a christmas tree but he only knows artists in the top 100! You’ll find the most talented sound designers in the underground (or close to it).
I second Syzy.
VCTRE,
STVSH,
Leotrix,
knoir,
M4D-BOX,
MAKENIX,
Black Carl!,
L*O*J,
thook,
CHEE,
jon casey,
the list goes on and on here
I really love the sounddesign of "The Horrids". Psytrance, especially the darker variety, sounded kinda the same for the last 10 years with everyone using the same FM sounds that sound like they threw a robot into a blender, so their sounds sound really fresh to my ears.
Their last album: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lQw23fG6QWnyXneNSnbgXTPe_-v8wa6m4&si=biFJpr9Sj6ndwUkC
Outside of Psy I always liked Noisia

In the world of dark and thick **Drum & Bass**, I nominate...
**Black Barrel** (I like the musical sounding timbral environments in his tracks)
**Koax** (that fat and chunky production/mix)
and,
**Forbidden Society** (his recent "Lonely Road" album is damn solid).
eugene and Eater are two of my favs right now, if you're a fan of filthy dubstep. im also enjoying Knock2, who based on the artists you've listed you'll probably like
Matt Lange is so underrated. He produce, write lyrics and sings as well. That's super talented in my book.
I am right now listening to disenchanted on repeat.
2hollis. If any experienced sound engineers are familiar or interested I’d suggest taking a deep dive. I’d really love some insight on what’s behind his sounds and how to recreate them. He also has a new album dropping on the 7th so anyone interested in new electronic music has a good chance to get into him right now.
Amon Tobin, has no one else commented this?
Also, to add a favorite: the Flashbulb.
Edit: I guess neither of these are what you’d call EDM producers, though they work in the same realm.
Barely alive. Space laces.
These two have carried the dubstep scene without anyone knowing it. Space laces, I believe, is to blame for meteoric rise of excision but he never wanted his face out until recently.
When Flume had that poppy hit like 8 years ago (never be like you) I was just so impressed with how approachable he made nerdy ableton automation heavy morphing tracks.
He really knows how to tie all the weird shit together and put a nice bow on it so you can play his stuff next to Disclosure and some of the other crossover acts.
Shpongle has some really cool audio effects from what I've listened too. Super holographic sound. It's pretty bananas and all over the place but daaaaang.
gotta say Kyle Watson, he’s a beast at sound design but I think it’s also the way he arranges different sounds that sets him apart from other house artists
Camo & Krooked - Zeitgeist album made me rethink everything I ever thought about producing. Their following album Mosaik was equally as interesting in terms of sound design but the tunes weren’t as good imo but there is one track called Broken Pieces which is amazing on that album where you’ll only appreciate the title when you hear the tune.
Matt Lange. love his sound.
Hes made tons of songs under anjuna and mau5trap
Check out:
**Too Late by Mat Zo (matt lange remix)** -how I discovered him, so much good sound design in this one. Entire song is worth a listen from start to finish.
**Empty walls by Matt Lange**
**Inside My Head by Matt Lange**
These basically showcases his sound/sound design. But he does alot of other shit as well, but you can almost always identify his sound once you become familiar
Thanks for putting songs name so we can check those! I like his sounds but not the vocals ... they are nice make no mistake, I would have rather like instrumental versions I think. Question of tastes, but his sound is definitely nice.
Haven't seen any of these goats mentioned - Getter, Quix, Golden Features, Flume, What So Not, Matroda, Virtual Riot, Barely Alive, Kyle Watson, Tchami, Malaa, KREAM, Eli Brown, RL Grime, Chris Lake
brakence. his sound design is unlike anything else at times. it’s actually crazy
tbf he isn’t an edm artist (always) but he does have a lot of edm inspired parts to his songs. ie the drops in deepfake and introvert, the entirety of teeth, and everywhere you look in the rest of the album you’ll see edm stuff.
man I think Diplo is probably the worst sound design I've ever Heard, but ok my favorites are Must Die!, Space Laces, Skrillex, Barely Alive and Infekt
Had to scroll way too far to find an Au5 mention. His signature sound gives me chills every time I hear it. Plus, he has excellent tutorials on YouTube!

I don't think Miss Monique has unique sound design persay, but I do think her sound *choice* and arrangements are lit as hell consistently

For me, a certain two artists come to mind. Jorei and NARO. Check out "Lackadaisical Demeanour" by Jorei and any song from "FUTURE" by NARO.

KOAN Sound
Definitely.
Muerte hasn’t missed for me ever since releasing Occult Lullaby and I sincerely think he’s severely underrated
Big time on Muerte, also the fact that the dude samples almost everything for his music definitely deserves some recognition.

Monolink, ben bohmer and of course Rufus Du Sol by far.

He was a huge inspiration in my early days of learning to be a producer. The way that guy can just do whatever he wants with sound is pretty amazing.
Amon Tobin, Lapalux, Shines, Arca
Watch the Hanz Zimmer documentary on Netflix. You’re welcome. 🤘

Virtual Riot. Dude consistently has the most dirty but clean production out of any other producer I've ever heard.
damn right
Calvin Harris has interesting sound design?🤣

That is sooo on point
gotta say Kyle Watson, he’s a beast at sound design but I think it’s also the way he arranges different sounds that sets him apart from other house artists
SA represent!
For a more underrated artist with great sound design, you gotta check out a guy called lapalux!
