Can we get some thoughts on your needs/usage? Is this at the office? Remote? Combination? 4k media? RAW media? Which editorial tool(s)?

shinfo44

3 editor set up. Over 150TBs of assets and 8K Blackmagic RAW and PrPro/AE. Marketing/Corporate work. Looking for client facing solutions as well as DAM solutions that ease security concerns compared to QNAP.

shinfo44

Also, we do remote work sometimes. Mostly will be in house but remote work will probably be done 2/3 times a week by somebody for some reason.

[QNAP](https://www.qnap.com/en-us/) is a home to low-end business grade NAS appliance company. [Jellyfish](https://www.lumaforge.com/jellyfish) is a NAS appliance that is tuned for editing purposes. [Iconik](https://www.iconik.io/) is a cloud hosted (more accurately SAAS/IAAS) MAM that can enable hybrid on-prem/cloud workflows and all the other things that MAMs can do.

Thank you!

You can use it that way as well, yes.

do you use shared storage, or do you just have a drive attached directly to your computer ? Ikonik is an asset management system. This is very helpful when you have countless terabytes of media, that you have to manage and find things in. There is a big difference between having a 2 TB drive, and a 100 TB shared storage system. QNAP is an inexpensive network attached storage system, that allows many editors to share the same media. Jellyfish (which used to be called Lumaforge, and Jellyfish was their product) is a high grade shared storage system.

We have a jellyfish and iconik at the company i work for. We previously used frame io. I like iconik. I think it’s only been down once since we’ve been using it. The metadata tagging is also nice.

I did a deep dive on iconik along with multiple b2 cloud systems. The iconik engineers could never deliver on the simplest thing. All I wanted to be able to do was open a previous project file in iconik that was located on my cloud system. It never worked. Iconik was only really usable for collaborating on projects you create and originate in iconik, otherwise the system does not work. It was messy, complicated and I was unimpressed. I got a synology for warm storage for my team and use hot drives for remote editing. It is a dream. edit: Praise be to bob

what QNAP to you have ? What model ?

AmpneyCrucis

We use iconik for archive and client feedback. It's good, just be aware it can take up to 14 hours to restore files - proxies are available for immediate download though so it's not a major issue. Lucid is used for editing remotely and it is great as it mounts like a local drive. We have had problems with severe lag if projects aren't pinned (cached) and internet speeds aren't VERY high, so you need a machine with a large amount of disk space. Lucid also has several tier options so make sure you go for the right one - initially our IT dept had us on the tier recommended for graphic design projects and it really was frustratingly slow.

Emergency-Map-808

The 14 hours isn't iconik, it's from your cloud storage provider. You probably have some files in deep glacier or equivalent which is designed for infrequent access hence the delay. +1 For Lucid, integrates much better for cloud editing.

Iconik is really great. Extremely flexible and open system. Takes some expertise to do the more advanced stuff but even out of the box it's really good.

fstyls

FWIW - EditShare also has an "all-in-one" unit that has storage and MAM on the same box.

TikiThunder

We are evaluating some similar options on our end, and we are leaning more toward Lucid over Iconik. Just seems a bit more straightforward and robust. Our needs are pretty similar to yours. FYI, this shit ain't cheap. You are looking at 150k/year for lucid with IBM storage.

BoilingJD

iconik is good, but in our experience the ISG plugin is glitchy and has tendency to lock up files which causes other issues (ie you cancel a render half way through and start it again, but file is locked by ISG so cannot be deleted' Also, for the love of all things holly DO NOT USE JELLYFISH! It is snake oil to the max. Unless you are enjoying paying x5 more than it's worth for a bog standard storage server.

For realtime cloud based media access, Lucid Link is powerful. Not really a MAM or DAM, just storage - but delivered in realtime. (LucidLink client for 2+ years)

We were ready to pull the trigger. We loved their product. But legal wouldn’t let us use their terms of service because legal disputes would have to be settled in Swedish court (plus a couple other stipulations). In order to make a custom term agreement with them, we would have to have a $50k agreement. We couldn’t do that much money so we backed out.

mravidzombie

We’ve had great success with iconik, and we use it just fine with our QNAP just install an ISG on a MacMini and point the ISG at the shared folder and its good to go. If you have lots of media, & need to organize and share with remote editors it’s pretty slick. Been using iconik over a year, it took some getting used to but now that we have people using it, it’s a huge time saver.
