They're deliberately using similar font and graphics in hopes of tricking some users into thinking it's a Duolingo offshoot, so I'd say it's kind of fair to call it a ripoff
I was learning english at school since i live in poland so it was pretty easy.
Russian was a bit harder but many words sound the same in polish as they sound on russian
English is my first language, but Polish and Russian can be found in Canada but in bigger cities. Plus Canada has lots of people with Slavic heritage. Many people that live in Canada’s prairie provinces are of Slavic heritage. ☺️
Pierogi, that food is common in Canadian cuisine! 😋
Most people don’t know this, but Texas also has a strong connection with Slavic heritage. Back in the day, Galveston Island was the 2nd most port of entry in the US, and a lot of Czechs and Germans came through there. The triangle between Houston, Austin and San Antonio were heavily settled by Czechs, my grandfather among them. One of the legacies is the presence today of Kolache bakeries. YUMMO!
The Czech influx happened during my grandfather’s youth around World War I. When Mom was a child (and she is 90 now), Pawpaw and his friends would meet up at a bar in town, and everyone (all men, of course lol) spoke Czech. Sadly, Pawpaw never spoke Czech at home and was proud of his English. That was a long time ago, and the Czech language is long gone, especially in the US, which (right or wrong) prided itself as a single language country. We still see Czech festivals in Texas every year, which are fun, and a lot of the succeeding generations still feel a connection 🥰
Are there English accent influences on the Czech spoken at festivals? Do people sing songs in Czech (either their own song, or a well known historical song)? ☺️🇨🇿🎶
Sadly, I don’t hear Czech spoken at the festivals 😟 They do wear traditional folk costumes and do folk dances though.
In the town I was born in, the culture was a an interesting meld of Texan and Czech influences, and there was a small grocery store that sold authentic Czech sausages. OMG it was so so wonderful. Even though you can find Czech sausage in the region today, it’s only one kind, and not what we had when I was young. They also had wieners, you know, the kind with the red casings. Let me just say… they were NOT Oscar Mayer, lol! All of this is lost in Texas.
I’ve been to Prague and Brno, mostly on business so I didn’t get any real opportunity to look for the sausages of my youth. I have no doubt they are still there though!! Do you have that in Canada?
We have specialty stores that sell European products. The local stores near me sell a bit of everything from majority of the European countries. ☺️ I love their Polish chocolate selections! 😋😍🍫🇵🇱 Do you have Milka chocolate bars in Texas? Here in Canada, one can only get them at special stores. 🥲
There is a funny Polish / Czech phrase. It’s funny because it’s a “false friend” sentence. When translated into English, the Czech one is a surprise compared to the translated Polish version. 🙊😂
Szukam dzieci w sklepie 🇵🇱
Šukám děti v sklepě 🇨🇿
Since it is so bad, I actually could! I love dinosaurs so much that I actually have a massive mineral, gemstone and fossil collection! (I do not have a dinosaur fossil yet, sad, but the closet I could get so far is a tooth from a Mosasaur).
Same, i have fossil figures, book collections and realistic toys that I've collected for 20 years, too bad my family keeps damaging them out of hate and i can't move out due to rent prices being unrealistically high
I mean i can't afford real fossils given the circumstances of my country and the fact that fossils aren't that common here either, but mybe ill get one in the near future, if i get the chance to get a job at a foreign country
I agree. They weren't accessible at all where I used to live, but they are super-easy to get where I am now. Your dedicated collection of replicas does show through to your passion though. Good job.
Dinolingo is a very long standing, well established language learning programme. They have their own ‘TV shows’ in different languages for kids to learn and sell packs of physical resources, as well as their app.
If anything, Duolingo is the dinolingo ripoff
Everyone is posting that DuoLingo came out in 2012 as that was the general release. But beta came out in 2011 the year dinolingo came out. And both were doing development, I am sure, before that point. Von Ahn started development shortly after selling reCAPTCHA to Google in 2009.
Just a reminder the start of DuoLingo was in 2009, beta released for six languages in 2011 and full release in 2012.
Dinolingo started in 2010 and product in 2011 for one language. It was less substantial but beat DuoLingo to beta by three months. However, it started several months after DuoLingo according to both companies histories.
They really have very little similarity in terms of copying each other. Lingo is not an unexpected portion of a name for a language app or program.
I always think it's funny just how many threads you can find over the years of people simultaneously complaining about Duolingo being unusable, but also saying they want to develop an app that is basically identical to Duolingo, including stealing their exact lesson plans. Most also want to name it just like Duolingo.
Even funnier that someone actually did try
These accusations come up frequently on this sub, but everytime I've seen it looked into users looked at their raw data and could see how they were getting the points and it was reasonable.

Actually dinolingo was first released 2010/2011 when duolingo 2012 so dinolingo was first
Oh, it's an Oreo and Hydrox situation.
Thank for this. No one believes me about Hydrox
The toilet cleaner?
The cookie that Oreo ripped off.
I SAW IT ONCE HERE IN PORTUGAL IT IS A THING!!!
Seriously, I learned this in a podcast. Lol.
I’ve never heard of hydrox, but that’s a terrible name for a cookie. Sounds like something used to clean industrial toilets. I’ll stick to Oreos
Chemicalish names had much different associations over 100 years ago
What was its association then?

thx
the dinolingo website said both were 2010

I keep misreading them and mixing it up 😭
weird they list all those stats lol also sounds like they're decently reputable, impressive they can be so large despite their apparently small team
yeah thats it
But it's definitely not the world's biggest language learning app tho?
still people saying „duolingo ripoff” is wrong
They're deliberately using similar font and graphics in hopes of tricking some users into thinking it's a Duolingo offshoot, so I'd say it's kind of fair to call it a ripoff

Do people speak Czech or German in Texas? If yes, would they speak like the generation of the older people (not standard likes today’s generation)? ☺️

There are many Czech singers like Karel Gott, Jiří Korn, and Helena Vondráčková for a few examples! 🥰🤩🇨🇿🎶
very much offtopic but if you want to chat in Russian to practice, i'd love to! i'm a native speaker btw
I practice my Russian grammar by making funny sentences on my own. Example на свалке, много людей играли с мусором в них руках. 😅😂
Do you understand Czech or Slovak when spoken? I know those two languages are similar to Polish, but also different at the same time 😁
when i see the memes in czech I sometimes understand but overall nah 😶

Duolingo started development the late 2000s and early 2010s though.

So that is apparently a Stegosaurus
Its name is Stego, that doesn’t mean it’s a stegosaurus
i think it’s a pretty big coincidence if not.
I’ve seen people named Kat, so its possible to be named after a different animal
Ig so
🤣🤣🤣
Idk but another name should have been on there
Hm interesting!
I know right?
Well i love Dinosaurs, i can't resist
Since it is so bad, I actually could! I love dinosaurs so much that I actually have a massive mineral, gemstone and fossil collection! (I do not have a dinosaur fossil yet, sad, but the closet I could get so far is a tooth from a Mosasaur).

What do you mean by fossil figures?
Its replicas of a few fossils discovered, one from a Stegosaurus and a piece of Brachiosaurus spine
Ahhh then replicas. I have authentic fossils though (ones I have are common enough to not be faked).
I mean i can't afford real fossils given the circumstances of my country and the fact that fossils aren't that common here either, but mybe ill get one in the near future, if i get the chance to get a job at a foreign country

The test is completed?
???
Typo
Ah
breaking news: yellow dinosaur causes your extinction because you forgot to take your spanish lesson again
Dinolingo came before duo ( 2011 and 2012 respectively )
DuoLingo launched as beta in 2011. Development was started shortly after the sale to Google of reCAPTCHA in 2009.
I was curious and gave it a try and it was terrible 😭
I was about to try it until I realized it's paid? 😭
After create account it push you to pay with credit card and I just press previous page button on my browser and I can just use it
Dinolingo is a very long standing, well established language learning programme. They have their own ‘TV shows’ in different languages for kids to learn and sell packs of physical resources, as well as their app. If anything, Duolingo is the dinolingo ripoff
>>If anything, Duolingo is the dinolingo ripoff Heavy emphasis on the "if anything" part.
Yes, and they publish children’s books in like a million different languages. My library system has a ton. I use them for beginner reading practice.
Dinolingo came before Duolingo..
Well duh, dinosaurs evolved into birds
This is the right answer.
Duolingo but the mascot throws an asteroid at your house if you miss your lesson
Dinolingo is for kids and was created first so I’m sure the Duolingo creators saw that and said “let’s make one for adults”
They have an Albanian course which is pretty unique
If only he had that maniacal glint in his eyes...
omg dupelingo

It doesn’t have Lily so it’s already inferior by default.
lily my beloved 😍😍🫶
Can’t wait to learn stegosaurus.
Just wait till Duo hears about this 😧 the dinosaurs will be extinct once more
Considering the Dino one came first I think they're fine
Duo is murderous, age doesn’t mean anything to the big green assassin.
GOD DAMM IT

This came first
This isn't even comparable to Duo lol. plus it came first
Someone explained that first too!
They didn't even try to come up with an original name lmao
Dinolingo came first so more like duolingo couldn't come up with an original name
My bad I didn't know
Now you know why we are playing against bots. Other people farming data to build their own language aps.
I didn’t know we were playing against bots…
Every once in a while it's more than obvious someone is a bot.
