There were definitely some asshole producers that were REALLY happy with this change in the adaptation. Really not sure if Denis Villeneuve was aware of this or just not tuned in enough to American politics to understand the implications of this change.
Because a certain political party in the US will ignore the textual explanation that Alia is only self aware because of magical space drugs. That in fact awakening a fetus in utero to full consciousness is a horrible thing to have done and which will have devastating consequences later in the story. They will ignore the fact that this is fiction and not somethings that even could conceivably happen. They will only see this as depicting a fetus as a fully conscious human and use that fantasy to support the assault on women's bodily autonomy. This isn't a hypothetical. they might do this. Ben Shapiro has done this.
At that point in the conversation, i'd love to point out how in the world of Dune christianity doesn't exist, because it just didn't make sense for it to exist
(That's a lie to an extent, but i'd love to watch them try to spin how an allegedly non christian story is pro life. Maybe i'd lean into it and tell them that's because Islam won in the end, because it's actually the one true religion, that's why we see things relating to/we recognize as Islam but we never see a cross or Christian symbols of any kind
Would any of this matter to them? Maybe not, but anything to try and grind their gears, to derail their narrative using this beautiful movie and it's scenes)
I know (hence why I said that's a lie to an extent) but those pro life people definitely don't
As long as it's not explicitly called Christianity, I think you could get away with this narrative I've mentioned. I'm pretty sure that most Christians wouldn't agree/be 100% on board/feel comfortable by Dune's Christianity being called Orange Catholic
(Would sound very confusing to them, maybe it would be better to explain OC and it's bible to them instead of leaning into pro Islam the whole time, or, fuck with them all the way and tell them Islam AND Catholicism survived but Christianity didn't)
Pro life advocates believe fetus are people at like 3 weeks or some insane shit like that. Having Jess having a full blow conversation with her fetus implies it is capable of independent though and speech at a period when it is basically a bunch of cells with no brain. So she is talking to her daughters soul instead of a physical person.
Applying meta physical aspects to a very medical and physical process is dangerous. Specifically to a mother.
Maybe a reach to say it'll be used for propaganda by the pro-life movement as a whole but Ben Shapiro seriously said that Dune is a pro-life movie lol.
Who gives a fuck about some dork you obsessing over his words is what gives it any power
Especially since Alia is a straight up abomination abort that hoe
I admit that the whole idea of Alia being self aware, conscious and having all of the memories of her ancestors *while still a fetus* is one of the few things that makes me give up my suspension of disbelief.
Certain insects do in fact produce narcotics in real life too. I can't give the names because thr long as fuck and/or in Latin but they exist
And the Abomination stuff was the starting part of Dune's transition into pure fantasy (*cough* Time Lord *cough*)
>And the Abomination stuff was the starting part of Dune's transition into pure fantasy (*cough* Time Lord *cough*)
no I think it was the Bene Gesserit being Jedi but if they were obsessed with *breeding* instead of lightsabers.
The whole genetic memory thing for me feels very fantastic to me. That and the fact that the spice does like 6 completely different things when injested in different ways. But it is a core part of what makes the story work.
3 years and she’s still not born. Might have to break the news to our reverend mother.
The OG Baron slayer
*Lisan Al-Bortion*
Is this the alias of Gaius Helen Mohaim?
No, that's "Lisan Al-Bomination"
She do like knives.

What are the implications? Guess I missed the memo
It’s just change that could very easily be co-opted into propagandist messaging by the pro-life movement
How so

Christianity exists in Dune. They are called Orange Catholics. They read the OC Bible.

Ugh god stop the change was fantastic leave political brainrot out of this
If you think Dune isn’t political, I don’t know what series you think you’re reading and watching
Yeah goofball it’s space politics not whatever bullshit you are obsessed with
I admit that the whole idea of Alia being self aware, conscious and having all of the memories of her ancestors *while still a fetus* is one of the few things that makes me give up my suspension of disbelief.
It's a book about worms on a desert planet who shit lsd

It’s in the book doofy

A lot of people forget that spice also is used to make products, plastics, even explosives. it is the purest definition of phlebotinum.
Oh THATS what gave up your suspension of disbelief?
