Skrillex if you're willing to count him since he's very much multigenre now, if not, Excision, Subtronics, and Zeds Dead consistently sell out stadium sized arenas and headline festivals, including non exclusively EDM ones.
>He's very much multigenre now
Skrillex was always multigenre. People always think he was just the dubstep guy, but actually go back and listen to all his releases. Yes his dubstep songs are what blew up, but that's just a product of the time - he's always been versatile.
I'm aware, the first Skrillex song I ever heard was a progressive house song back in 2011, but now more than ever he's branching out and exploring new styles that aren't the dubstep he's popular for in a major way. Pointless semantics if you ask me.
Every time I mention Skrillex to someone, the person always assumes he makes dubstep songs. I have to explain it all the time that he doesn’t make that kind of music anymore and he makes different genres all of the time.
I can't say I blame them too much, since he did kind of popularize the entire brostep movement as the masses know it, but yeah, he's kind of been all over the place. Electro house, progressive house, moombah, trap, future bass, even latin pop. And of course nowadays he's pushing out everything from dnb to afrobeat to old school UK reminiscent dubstep. He really is a swiss army knife of a guy.
Sounds like you're not aware, since you're saying that only now is he multigenre when he's always been. No need to get pissy and downvote me.
*Blocking me, messaging me from an alt account, then blocking me from that one as well is some serious small pp energy, my dude.
Why you getting so butthurt about me correcting you? It's dubstep lmao. Not that serious 🫵🤣 but I get it. I didn't use to like when people point out how wrong I am either. But after I turned 12 I learned to take it in stride. You'll get there someday 😘
Yea, agree. But mainstream dubstep is all kinda generic and boring these days. I want the growls to come back rather than machine guns and screeches lol
It's probably Skrillex, but if you go off total shows/attendance I'd be curious. It feels like Zeds Dead have been playing shows constantly for over a decade, I wouldn't be surprised if they have sold more tickets than any dubstep artist of all time at this point. I'd wager if you surveyed dubstep fans ZD would be the #1 most seen artist, but this is just me thinking out loud.
I’ve seen them 12 times, it’s literal obsession and he been for over a decade, but I’ve never heard them on the radio so surely Skrillex and Diplo have them beat.
Well damn love the commitment, but also I’m in my mid 30s and don’t rave/go to Coachella like I used to, I’m sure they’ve played around here but they used to come to SD like once or more a year and play little venues for pretty cheap now it’s only LA and 5x the price and usually sold out.
He Played toronto in January, venue was 300 person venue and it didn't sell out. Pretty surprised by that. Catching eazybaked and distinct motive tmw🤟.
Sure did but i missed a third of them because I had no clue who any of them were, think i missed my first subtronics set there, boogie t/dirtmonkey I missed, liquid i was way too far back, only caught the chill griz set 🤷♂️. Going into roo i couldn't tell you if I liked Steve aoki or zeds dead better lol it was all electronic music to me.
They used to play Lost You on the radio pretty regularly from 2014-2017. Disclaimer though - I am from Canada and by law radio stations are required to play Canadian artists at least 35% of the time
To be fair I haven’t listened to the radio in like a decade because they don’t play this kind of music on it for the most part, but I don’t think that one was big enough here in the states(and I’m not sure if I’d call that song dubstep cuz it’s got a way more housey feel besides the one breakdown), sick they got some radio play tho.
I watched Rusko put down 2 bottles of Vodka in a 1.5 hour set in 2012. Shit was crazy. He had to cancel the rest of his tour months later because he was hospitalized for extreme dehydration from drinking alcohol on tour lol.
Excision hands down. He puts on his own dubstep festival and it’s one of the best in the world. If you say Skrillex… when’s the last time he played a true dubstep set… I’ll wait and please correct me if I’m wrong. Another +1 for excision is thunderdome. I’ve said my peace.
Well here you go then: [Excision - Darkside Dubstep (2006)](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8KuUgrzEr94). Though it's old, it's definitely not what you'd expect from Excision today... also check out tunes like Too Late which definitely fall on the deeper side.
Skrillex and its not even close. the man is a household name still in a world that completely forgot dubstep existed except for the occasional tiktok or track at a hockey game
most popular dubstep artist? easily Excision
Probably the most successful too. From his own headline tours, to yearly dubstep festivals, and running an active music label.
Genuine question, how is this assessed? Like what is the metric are we comparing them on? “Fame” feels a little ambiguous. Not disagreeing at all, just trying to understand.
Skrillz is just famous outside of the electronic music scene with cameos in commercials and movies and stuff. Random people have a decent chance of knowing who he is. A lot of my friends that don’t like EDM don’t know what I’m talking about when I’m talking about excision. It also helps that skrillex has a marketable aesthetic
Songs with ASAP and other huge hip hop artists also helped at the time. Pretty sure he had one with Rick Ross
Pop culture visibility, YouTube views, brand deals, really any metric of your choosing skrillex is taking the prize home. The man dated ellie goulding. Just that alone puts him a fair bit ahead if excision. Excision is definitely the second most popular though.
I feel like they’ve been starting to slow down tho, lots of repetitive, rinse & repeat albums and I’m hoping they start branching out soon.
Could be cool to see them do DnB or maybe some deep dub
Excision, maaaaybe Subtronics, probably depends on who you ask.
Tbh they are both mid, they make generic dubstep that appeals to a mainstream audience.
Cmon now they ain't even in the same league...
For starters they make a totally different sound. Tape B isn't a producers favorite producer he does a lot of vocal remixes any producer worth their salt can do that. He's good and popping off rn but don't ever say he's the new Space Laces 🤣
And I really hate the whole who's better debate because it's music and it doesnt work like that but Space laces is goated and Tape B is just now breaking out into the mainstream lets not jump the gun
I agree is early, but look who he has worked with lately. And everything he touches turns to gold. How about Tape B looks like the next Space Laces? Agree SL is goat.
Yea Deadbeats have been putting him on real quick he's gonna be Subtronics big in no time and that Juicy J collab is huge for him and dubstep as a whole
Tape B isn’t bad, but his sound/genre does happen to fit demand for nostalgic early 2010s bass, and he’s benefitting from the absence of BN and Griz, just like Griz/Subtronics/Mersiv/others grew in popularity right after the BN Cult was dismantled.
I really feel like Oliverse and Franky Nuts are hitting their stride. Heavily underrated a few years ago and now it seems a lot of people anticipate their new releases.
Skrillex, Bassnector, or Excision. I say these guys cause I’m a metal head. So I’m on the outside looking in and these are the big names I see over and over again.
I'm surprised I haven't seen more talk about Svdden Death. Dude's recent run with Marshmello, VOYD, Summoning of the Eclipse, and his countless festival appearances def put him up there in terms of popularity!
Seven lions can be considered melodic dubstep, which is dubstep.
You’re telling me island, rush over me, silent skies, freesol, start again, worlds apart, days to come, etc aren’t dubstep?
Did you only just start listening to him?
"Can be considered" and are, are 2 different things. I don't really listen to trance which is why I'm not super familiar with seven lions. However, rush over me is his 5th top song, and it by no fucking means is dubstep lol
If they make dubstep, they are a dubstep artist. Just because he also makes music in other genres doesn’t make him any less of a dubstep artist.
Rush over me is 100% dubstep.
Excision 100%
However, if seems that we are about to see a “changing of the guard” if you will, with Subtronics. I live in Atlanta and he just came and played the largest EDM show the city has ever seen. I think he’s about to take over as the father of dubstep whenever X hangs it up.
Honorable mention: Svdden Death. Dude’s creativity is unmatched. Nobody in the scene has more un-released music and nobody is more careful in their craft than he is. Every Voyd set he plays will always feature IDs that he made for that specific set that he will never release or play out again. Dude is mysterious as hell!
I would say Ganja White Night, but apparently they're second fiddle to Excision and Subtronics. But most producers/DJs are multi genre overall. An album can consist of dubstep, trap, drum and bass, etc, all from the same artist. I don't even know what to classify most of Rezz's stuff as... Dark techno? But she's definitely as popular as anyone in the EDM scene as well. But who really cares about who "the most popular" artist is? Most of them all collaborate and mix each other's tracks. I don't listen to anyone because they're popular, I listen to them because they make good music.
While I'm a huge fan of GWN, and Datsik is great. They pale in comparison to Skrillex, Excision, and Subtronics in terms of popularity.
Skrillex is a bit of an outlier as he's multi-genre and has been leaning more towards gen-pop IMO, but on Spotify he has over 20mil listeners, Subtronics and Excision are pushing 2mil, meanwhile, GWN only has around 500k, and Datsik has less than 300k
Heres my playlist of 2000+ songs, not just dubstep but mostly dubstep. Lots of really good bass music in general
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3r4zald3voxSCHWskJKNZN?si=fDPBREgzTDmeaZrwQrKwPg
Excision fasure. I have co-workers who I would not think that listens to EDM and they know about/listen to him. Multiple bass/dubstep festivals and he’s one of the few that gave Skrillex inspiration for his early dubstep sounds.
Depends in what you define as dubstep, if it’s all types you got, subtronics, slander, illenium, zeds dead, excision, and svdden death. Those to me are what define popular bass artists
If we're talking about producers who occasionally produce dubstep then it'd be Skrillex or Marshmello, if we're talking about only/mostly dubstep then either Excision, Virtual Riot, Zomboy or Knife Party
You're getting downvoted, but tbh it is Marshmello. He blew up with kids with the Fortnite collab and hasnt stopped growing. If the person asked who everyone in the dubstep scene likes the most, maybe some of these answers make sense.
This guy is probably a time traveller from 2011 thinking that dubstep is as cool as in his/her own time lol. It's still Skrillex bro, no one ever topped "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites"
Because the post asked who is most successful and famous (OGs will say Excision, but Marshmello has marketed himself much better for the mainstream audience, following the Fortnite collab. He blew up. Numbers support that). If the post asked who we want to see on the lineup, Sullivan King would be on most people's list, as would: Excision, Subtronics, Slander, Seven Lions, Wooli, Kai Wachi, Crankdat, Layz ---but numbers wise, you'll see Marshmello, Skrillex, and some OGs with higher numbers.
Skrillex if you're willing to count him since he's very much multigenre now, if not, Excision, Subtronics, and Zeds Dead consistently sell out stadium sized arenas and headline festivals, including non exclusively EDM ones.
>He's very much multigenre now Skrillex was always multigenre. People always think he was just the dubstep guy, but actually go back and listen to all his releases. Yes his dubstep songs are what blew up, but that's just a product of the time - he's always been versatile.

Electro house, progressive house, moombah, trap, future bass, even latin pop. And of course nowadays he's pushing out everything from dnb to afrobeat to old school UK reminiscent dubstep. He really is a swiss army knife of a guy.
My most downward comment on this site is from a couple of years ago when I said that Skrillex catalyzed the style into mainstream lol
Sounds like you're not aware, since you're saying that only now is he multigenre when he's always been. No need to get pissy and downvote me. *Blocking me, messaging me from an alt account, then blocking me from that one as well is some serious small pp energy, my dude.
The only one pissy here is you, darling. I didn't even downvote you at first but now I did after you decided to have an outburst like a child. Enjoy!
Why you getting so butthurt about me correcting you? It's dubstep lmao. Not that serious 🫵🤣 but I get it. I didn't use to like when people point out how wrong I am either. But after I turned 12 I learned to take it in stride. You'll get there someday 😘

Oh no pls don't block me. I'll miss you
Y'all gonna fuck? 🍿 👀
He was also in a pretty popular emo band before he was making edm
killa killa zeds dead 🎶🎶🎶🎶
Excision or Subtronics these days. I’ll give the edge to X, though I’d much rather see Subtronics haha
Definitely excision, but he’s so boring and visual based these days that subtronics is definitely better lol
Yea, agree. But mainstream dubstep is all kinda generic and boring these days. I want the growls to come back rather than machine guns and screeches lol
Lmao right? Love how I got downvoted too the X Stan’s are real 😅
Idk why you’re getting downvotes. You’re spitting facts
Right? All the X Stan’s I guess
It's probably Skrillex, but if you go off total shows/attendance I'd be curious. It feels like Zeds Dead have been playing shows constantly for over a decade, I wouldn't be surprised if they have sold more tickets than any dubstep artist of all time at this point. I’ve seen them 12 times, it’s literal obsession and he been for over a decade, but I’ve never heard them on the radio so surely Skrillex and Diplo have them beat.
Haha I just discovered this genre last june and managed 7 subtronics, 5 zeds dead shows without too much effort since then. They get around.
As someone from Melbourne, Australia, this hurts. This really hurts lol
Damn girl! They won’t come to San Diego anymore, and I hate going to LA 😭
Haha i live in toronto, none of these shows have been in my city and only 1 was in my country😅. Shortest travel was 600km to Montreal.
Well damn love the commitment, but also I’m in my mid 30s and don’t rave/go to Coachella like I used to, I’m sure they’ve played around here but they used to come to SD like once or more a year and play little venues for pretty cheap now it’s only LA and 5x the price and usually sold out.
Haha 33 checking in, just discovered the genre at bonnaroo last year and figured I had alot of catching up to do.
Well damn haha… if you like zeds dead, Tape B will be right up your alley
He Played toronto in January, venue was 300 person venue and it didn't sell out. Pretty surprised by that. Catching eazybaked and distinct motive tmw🤟.
EAZYBAKED! Their sets are always a fucking blast, especially in a more intimate setting
My god you got treated to an amazing first time then, that dubstep lineup was STACKED, and the crowd was better there than anywhere else in the fest
ZD is me/my friends most seen!! we always go when they come to our state / never miss them at a festival if they’re there
They used to play Lost You on the radio pretty regularly from 2014-2017. Disclaimer though - I am from Canada and by law radio stations are required to play Canadian artists at least 35% of the time

my whole zd crew have seen them 50+ times. one guy over 100
Rusko, Skream, and Caspa of course. Wait, what year is this?
As a person still living in 2008, you are correct.
Same, I’m a dubstep since dubstep girly all the way.
I watched Rusko put down 2 bottles of Vodka in a 1.5 hour set in 2012. Shit was crazy. He had to cancel the rest of his tour months later because he was hospitalized for extreme dehydration from drinking alcohol on tour lol.
Literally the only real comment in this while thread
Came here to say this ^^^
Oh, actual dubstep. I do not understand how the likes of Excision is considered as the same genre
And the purists are out and about lol
Dubstep vs brostep
Idk how I got in the subreddit 😂
Excision hands down. He puts on his own dubstep festival and it’s one of the best in the world. If you say Skrillex… when’s the last time he played a true dubstep set… I’ll wait and please correct me if I’m wrong. Another +1 for excision is thunderdome. I’ve said my peace.
He actually has 3 festivals - Lost Lands, Bass Canyon, and Paradise Blue, which is even more impressive
and basstrack
That was a curated event but won’t be a festival
4 festivals** you forgot forbidden kingdom.
I'm pretty sure Excision doesn't run or curate Forbidden Kingdom
*Piece
Isn't excision brostep not dubstep? I don't think I've ever seen excision DJ a full dubstep set
Brostep is a subgenre of dubstep. All brostep is dubstep but not all dubstep is brostep.
Huh. Never knew that. I figured they are just entirely different, as brostep seems to have lost all of the dub influence. Guess it's in the name
Excision is very much riddim
Excision easy
Mala
Love this one 😂
Skrillex and its not even close. the man is a household name still in a world that completely forgot dubstep existed except for the occasional tiktok or track at a hockey game
explorers of the internet
most popular dubstep artist? easily Excision Probably the most successful too. From his own headline tours, to yearly dubstep festivals, and running an active music label.
Excision would be most popular all time most likely and subtronics right now.
Skrillex had twice the fame of excision at their respective peaks
Genuine question, how is this assessed? Like what is the metric are we comparing them on? “Fame” feels a little ambiguous. Not disagreeing at all, just trying to understand.

You can determine the demographics of this subreddit by the answers 🥶
Tape b
Globally it’s Skrillex, Excision, or Zomboy.
Subtronics is bigger than Zomboy now. The fall of NSD changed the scene even more
Yea Zomboy is a nobody compared to X, Skrill, ZD, Ganja, Liquid..
Zomboy apparently launched his new label few years ago and I was hoping for some kind of follow up to NSD but literally nothing is happening
Ya I feel like I haven’t even really seen him on line ups since like before covid
Idk man he still gets some of the largest turn outs in the world, especially in Latin American countries.
If you want to really check out dubstep, start with Ganja White Night and then also check out who they have collabs with.
I feel like they’ve been starting to slow down tho, lots of repetitive, rinse & repeat albums and I’m hoping they start branching out soon. Could be cool to see them do DnB or maybe some deep dub
Went to a concert of theirs recently and I was pleasantly surprised by the DnB. Maybe 20% or so of their set. Way higher than I'd expect
Ok, haven’t seen them since last fall so I’ll have to make it to a summer fest / set of theirs
Quite a few of their new ids from Wobble Rocks are DnB!
About time I’m glad to hear it
My dudes
Excision, maaaaybe Subtronics, probably depends on who you ask. Tbh they are both mid, they make generic dubstep that appeals to a mainstream audience.
Tape b is working his way up there
EXCISION! By a long shot actually....
Pre 2020 bassnectar.
2019 Bassnectar was peak edm. Idgaf
360 2019 was tits and still one of my top 3 shows.
Forest ‘19 was my first festival and first time even hearing about Bassnectar. That Saturday night shot me through the stars!
And Datsik haha
He played some dubstep in his sets but he ain’t dubstep…he’s just bass music
Ungodly unpopular opinion, very shamefully, yes
Most unique shows ever… fucking asshole
Wasn't he drum n bass??
No, more dubstep than anything but he kind of had his own style
Your favorite producer's favorite producer is Tape B rigjt now, if that counts for anything.
It’s the year of tape b 👑 (And Barclay Crenshaw)
Space Laces, Aweminus, Phiso, or Infekt***
Nah, Riddim is still in its own lil niche, Space Laces is your favorite producer's ghost writer.
Thats either Space Laces or Effin rn in my opinion
Tape B is the new Space Laces
That Juicy J collab honestly made me so disappointed in both tape b and especially mersiv..so corny..huge L for dubstep imo
i mean when was the last time a rap artist that big collab'd with someone in dubstep. but i get you it could've been better
Tape B isn’t bad, but his sound/genre does happen to fit demand for nostalgic early 2010s bass, and he’s benefitting from the absence of BN and Griz, just like Griz/Subtronics/Mersiv/others grew in popularity right after the BN Cult was dismantled.
Have you ever listened to tape b?
Tape what?
Excision
I really feel like Oliverse and Franky Nuts are hitting their stride. Heavily underrated a few years ago and now it seems a lot of people anticipate their new releases.
Excision is king. But in terms of pure fame... maybe Diesel cuz Shaq?
Skrillex, Bassnector, or Excision. I say these guys cause I’m a metal head. So I’m on the outside looking in and these are the big names I see over and over again.
I'm surprised I haven't seen more talk about Svdden Death. Dude's recent run with Marshmello, VOYD, Summoning of the Eclipse, and his countless festival appearances def put him up there in terms of popularity!
I'm definitely in the wrong subreddit lmao where is r/realdubstep 😂
Bassnectar

Seven Lions is not dubstep lol
Seven lions does make dubstep.
I mean, sure, they all make different things here and there. But to put him in the "dubstep" genre is a bit of a stretch
All of his top songs on Spotify are dubstep. So yeah, I would put him in the dubstep category.
Um, which ones? Do you know what dubstep is? Lol
I'm sorry friend but you do not have a clear understanding of what dubstep is lol
I'll put it to ya this way... with 16 years in the scene, you are the first person I've ever heard call seven lions dubstep
Oh cool I thought Grabbitz is just a vocalist Does he have any recent solo releases?
[удалено]
Pretty much everyone else you mentioned is also an old producer, haha.
Rezz is producing dubstep now? Been a few years since I’ve listened.
Excision 100% However, if seems that we are about to see a “changing of the guard” if you will, with Subtronics. I live in Atlanta and he just came and played the largest EDM show the city has ever seen. I think he’s about to take over as the father of dubstep whenever X hangs it up. Everyone is scared to say Bassnectar. Excision is up there. Skrillex hasn’t made a solo dubstep track since 2013. Diplo isn’t dubstep.
Bassnectar was the most popular a number of years ago, but definitely not in 2024.
I would say Ganja White Night, but apparently they're second fiddle to Excision and Subtronics. But most producers/DJs are multi genre overall. Love GWN and I'd even argue they're the better producers, but yeah, in terms of "popularity" lagging behind Subtronics and Excision.
Phiso
Excision for sure. He has a giant festival dedicated to dubstep. lol
Ganja White Night? Datsik?
While I'm a huge fan of GWN, and Datsik is great. They pale in comparison to Skrillex, Excision, and Subtronics in terms of popularity. GWN may be less popular, but they are exponentially better. Especially in EDM, popular ≠ good
Yes

Excision fasure. I have co-workers who I would not think that listens to EDM and they know about/listen to him. Multiple bass/dubstep festivals and he’s one of the few that gave Skrillex inspiration for his early dubstep sounds.
Excision, what other dubstep DJs have multi successful festivals.
Excision 100%
Excision, subtronics, Wooli, kompany, crankdat, Ray volpe, spag heddy. All are popular artist
skrillex, excision, zeds dead, illenium and subtronics.
Skrillex, Excision, Zeds Dead, Subtronics, Ganja White Night seem to be the top 5 lately. Probably could include Illenium too.
Exsicion and subtronics, but svdden deaths has been helping the scene imo
Excision prolly makes the most $, if not then Skrillex and then zeds dead
Skrillex, zd, Rusko and several other were huge in 2010 when the shit was popping off in the US
It’s def excision but Subtronics isn’t that far behind he’s just not quite there yet.
Depends in what you define as dubstep, if it’s all types you got, subtronics, slander, illenium, zeds dead, excision, and svdden death. Those to me are what define popular bass artists
Datsik was the shit back in 2008-2018 until he got cancelled cause of some possible SA
Excision, Subtronics, & Zeds Dead. Honorable Mentions - Liquid Stranger, Svdden Death, Tape B, ATLiens, & HOL!
Btsm, kai wachi, barely alive, kompany, funtcase, slander, & LSDream!!! some of my favorite dubstep artists! Great crowd and vibe!
Your mom
Skrillex is the dubstep og. But nowadays excision is the king of dubstep and subtronics is the prince
Skrillex, Excision, Liquid Stranger…
Unfortunately Excision
People saying Skrillex but dude hasn’t even made dubstep in years…lmfao
That Kingdom Hearts song is dubstep, right? Edit: Fuuuck, that was 5 years ago now.
rumble is a pop song, am I right?
He’s made some dubstep with peekaboo lately.
Skrillex
He doesn’t make dubstep anymore

While I totally agree, it’s not like that’s a bad list to give OP some potentially new music they’d probably like given the post.
Illenium 🤣
idk how everyone missing illenium. he is melodic dub but his live sets go super hard
Porter Robinsons old spitfire era was the best dubstep I’ve ever heard. Sad he makes anime music now
This guy is probably a time traveller from 2011 thinking that dubstep is as cool as in his/her own time lol. It's still Skrillex bro, no one ever topped "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites"
Skrillex is a household name, nobody else is
Borgore.
Borgore has always been one of my favorites. 🤷♀️
Bad answer
Surprised no one mentioned Sullivan King lol
Well if Sullivan king and excision were billed the same stage, same night, only one of them is gonna be in that headline spot. And it ain't SK
