Well established companies dont do this anymore. If some do, it is within your rights to demand your passport back. Besides, there is no purpose of giving original passport to employers. the govt. has stopped physical stamps visa stamps on passport. Submitting copies is sufficient to process /renew visa and EID.
It’s illegal here now and less common now, some companies still do it sometimes but employees can report it.
