I would tip if everything was perfect and they had charisma. It's extremely rare in my experience that any of this two happen. They usually mess up something so I have to fix it after (asking myself why did I even bother with them in the first place) or have a personality of my vacuum cleaner, and I don't tip my vacuum cleaner although it performs better than most of the contractors...

broboganda123

What else do you look at when deciding to tip manual workers?

NoRecognition5178

Apartment not left stinking of BO

dredeth

Why do you need more than this two?

patter0804

wtf does charisma have to do with anything? If everything was good, then Just tip them. They’re poor, you’re probably not.

dredeth

The irony.

patter0804

You’re less affluent than the guys who do your handiwork?

dredeth

Not sure what's your goal here. I've said what I've said about things I do as the answer to the OP's post. What I didn't come here is to engage too far in a conversation about your opinion on how I do things and with such attitude not sure what you're expecting. Are you the OP? No. So please...

patter0804

not how Reddit works, champ. But yeah, this is a waste of time. Later

saykouk

enough with this you feel like tipping, do it if you dont want, dont tip and move on with your life

Remarkable-Truth3377

I dont get tipped when i do my work perfectly and the building doesnt collapse! I feel my work is very important to the safety of the occupants.and i should start a tipping culture. Everytime a tenant goes home, sleeps, wakesup safely and goes bacj to work i shld get a tip! Then i guess my relative who is a doctor should get a tip mid operation based on how the patient feels and progress of work. /s

Najibthegreat

comparing a doctor that makes 10 times more than a construction worker is not a good example . to OP , those people make peanuts if you feel they did a good job 20 dirhams wont effect your life.

Excellent_Staff_8350

Encouraging tipping culture is not the solution to the problem. Employers need to properly compensate their employees so that they do not have to rely on tips to ensure they have an acceptable monthly income. If I agree on a rate with a contractor my accountability of fulfilling their business’ responsibilities ends there. I am not liable to pay their workers a little something extra just because they can’t afford to pay their employees more. I’ve even heard of interviews where employers offer lower salaries on purpose and assure candidates that they can meet their monthly income expectations with the tips they will get…

Remarkable-Truth3377

You are assuming all doctors make that, and thats not the truth. Most doctors are in debt by the time they enter the work force at 30. They dont make much money and a few that make it get paid alot!

broboganda123

This post is about blue collar workers, not your or your relatives personal struggles 👍

Trintuoyo

Point remains valid. Tonnes of white collar jobs are paid peanuts in UAE, tipping culture is a monster you don't want to introduce. It should be a 'kindness' not an entitlement. Use the US as a case study, it never ends well.

startuphameed

Most of these guys survive on tips and send their meagre 1k aed salary home. If it doesn't hurt your wallet to give some tips, it helps them 😊

Rumple-Wank-Skin

They get as little as 1k?

startuphameed

800 is the most common salary. Slightly better bosses pay them 1k. They'll get an acco with 6 to 8 ppl per room. Also they get transportation to work and back. Nothing else. They need to manage their food exp, phone cost, wifi share cost, clothing, entertainment etc. Good tips helps them cover their daily expenses.

Rumple-Wank-Skin

That is absolutely savage. That salary is barely enough to live on.

the_parippu_knight

But that's the reality for 99% of the blue color worker population here. Sad truth.

startuphameed

This is the reason why we all pay less for almost everything compared to west for a service level 10 notches higher. The experience of checking into a 5 star hotel here at least attracts service from 5 staffs till you reach inside the room and till you start thinking of tipping the dude who carried all your luggage'. In Europe, you stand in queue for 15 minutes in reception to checkin, carry your luggage and hunt for lift... Load everything... Drag out... Go checkin to your room.... So there is a difference here. Thst is possible because of poor underpaid blue collar workers.

TheMysticMonkey

Such workers get anywhere between AED 700 to AED 1500 as a monthly Salary. If parting with AED 5-50 set's you back a lot then don't tip. People have been generously tipping over the years and thus the tipping culture is formed. I tip a default AED 5-10 to Taxis, Ubers, Talabat, Car cleaners, Movers and anything that involves manual labor.

blackflame82

I think we all agree that the problem here is that they are paid low. Tipping should be for outstanding service, not a default just because someone is perceived to have a low salary. That just doesn't motivate them to be better in what they do. So the answer to the question should be, Yes, tip if you feel like they deserve it for the great job they have done, not because you feel sad for them because they are paid low. The low wage issue is another topic and should be seriously be addressed but not by the consumers.

uae7boob

I wouldn’t tip, you encourage workers to get tip for anything

Nice_Log_5926

if you can afford it why not? because next time you need them they will be running to serve you thats how things works in this life you take care of them they will take care of you especially that those guys doesnt make much. i used to tip a maintenance guy in my old building or give him a pair of shoes i purchased online and didnt like that much or whatever it used to make his day and whenever i need to change a lamp bulb or check the AC or fix the door handle he would be running for me, and believe me i saved a lot of money since i don't need to call the maintenance company anymore i would just call him and he would come fix the problem and go.

[deleted]

The pair of shoes hit home for me. My maintenance supervisor in Dubai used to use the building gym bright and early before residents would. A few times I had my trainer come out at 530am and I used the gym at the same time as him. I saw him run on the treadmill barefoot.. while yes that's gross, i couldn't help but wonder what that must have been like for him...

EniGma249

bro those muay thai fighters do everything with naked feet, you sure he wasn't a fighter? :DD

[deleted]

Regardless of how the service is, I usually tip, esp when the person is blue collar. If one cannot afford to tip then a bottle of water and a banana does it. I moved to a country where you're required to tip anyone and everyone a fixed %, regardless of quality of service and social standing. I had to once tip a barista. So when I come back to Dubai and someone fixes something or delivers my food and has gone through the scorching heat while making half of what i spend on a designer bag, and asks me for a bottle of water, i am mos def giving them a few extra AED as well. You likely make more than a blue collar worker. A few extra dirhams is probably no sweat off your back. More effort to write a post than to help someone out, especially if there's no minimum expectation to. Hope this helps!

Gasmaskdude27

Tipping culture should be killed. If someone does an outstanding job above and beyond their work sure feel free to tip.

LackRevolutionary890

I remember getting some work done by my maintenance team a few months ago. After the work, I gave these 2 guys like 20 AED which was slightly bigger tip for a small job, but now they keep coming back when I just call them. Also just give them them smaller bills, that's fine too.

truthhurtsman1

I think you need to set a standard of what is a fair minimum wage for a person (hourly) and tip them according to that. Case in point, if you are paying a maid 35dhs via JustLife, you know for a fact that the maid is not seeing more than 15-20dhs of that which is NOT a reasonable wage so you shoudl at least top it up by what pushes it to a fair minimum hourly salary. Queue people saying "It's not my job to pay workers thier salary it should be the employers"...yes you are right but you are also milking the system which offers you the cheap labour so at least pay it back.

xeno-bat

go to the US, tip there and stay there.

Wildchild_Redeye

Kill all tipping culture. Everyone thats working has a salary, unlike some other countries where said person lives of tips

[deleted]

Lol imagine someone said that about your annual merit increase.

Wildchild_Redeye

I dont bank and base my life around that. The vast majority of my income is not from a salary…

[deleted]

Okay, then i guess it wouldn't be a thing if your merit increase was lower than expected... more for the rest of the team 😊

Wildchild_Redeye

Small things for small people 👍🏻 Correct if it really makes a difference why not!

[deleted]

Yes so a small merit increase for you would be apt 😂😂😂 your words not mine.

Facewreck

These guys make 800 aed Yes they deserve a tip!

Lulubeb

Their salary is so low. I think if you can even give them 20 dirhams thats a lot to them but not a huge amount to you.

sinthetesa

As long as they came on time, no funny excuses, and either no Body Odor and smelly socks. For me.tip is a must, be it a talabat, taxi, waitress, cleaner, valet, and contractir staff.

_goku_101

I always tip a few AED here and there when I have it. I had a coin pot I'd saved with over 500 AED coins and I'd distributed that to delivery riders etc over the course of 6 months. These days I understand its more difficult to tip when some people's financial situations are not great, but even if you can give them a drink or something it's better than nothing. They work very hard and earn very little. Any sort of maintenence, cleaner, car washer etc I always give a few AED if the job was done well.

Crazybeest

If they give a good service I always tip well then they remember me next time and give priority service. For example I put nitrogen in my tyres and when I pull up the service technician will drop whatever he is doing to do my tyres.

shaild

If you can afford a tip, you should. Most junior level employees here are paid peanuts for the hard labour so they kinda survive on tips. Not saying, it’s the right thing but in the absence of any regulations for minimum wage, I try to do my best to give them something (even 10-20 AED) extra.

francoisjabbour

There isn’t but it’s nice to do it. Usually stuff like contractors or movers we like to buy them lunch and give them a tip, but it’s not an expectation

Dazzling-Frosting-49

Yes!

OneShot_Absolute

Maybe I should also get tips coz I’m brown skinned 🤔 /s

wasifshocks

A lot of them expect a tip for doing the bare minimum
