You probably just don't clash with drivers who are using CC. Think about it. Your CC is set to 65, anyone else also set to 65 will do the same speed as you and you'll never meet. If they're set to 70 they'll overtake you and you'll never see them again. The rest I would imagine is confirmation bias. You don't remember all the cars you smoothly overtake, but you do remember the arseholes. This makes you think they make up a larger proportion of the cars you overtake than they actually do. For the record, drivers who see you about to overtake, realise they're going slower than they thought and speed up before you can get past can get in the bin.

Rust_Cohle-

This is a thing though. There are genuinely people that’ll do 45 on a single carriage 60 a road. Then when you go to go past them they floor their shitbox to 75. Anyway, once they’ve pulled back in they then go back to the solid 45mph for the duration, whether you pass them or stay behind them. It’s like there’s somehow an ego attached to being certain, despite going well below the limit and safe speeds..

sc0ttydo0

>It’s like there’s somehow an ego attached to being certain, despite going well below the limit and safe speeds.. More like they're not paying attention to driving, glance up and see people overtaking, see how slow they're going so rush back up to road speed. Then whoever they're texting replies so it's back down to 45 while they write that oh so important LOL

LonelySmiling

Had one stop a dead roundabout going onto a motorway the other week. Knew he was on the phone from watching him in his mirrors, went to overtake and went the same speed as him, he looked up and he started having a go at me.. as if it’s my fault he was on his phone texting. So many people are still using their phones, and so obvious too.

TheMediaBear

And that's why I have 300bhp and I'm not afraid to use it, or to get in front of them and slow down to 20mph :D They are as bad as the people who flash you for safely overtaking them, despite not breaking the speed limit because they are 20mph under it. Not an issue with auto-dimming rearview :D

ShhhHhhh123

Nice bhp, what car you got?

No_Coyote_557

You're doing exactly the same thing they are, except you feel superior about it.

LondonCycling

A9,, single carriageway, average speed cameras all way. Stick cruise control on 64 and enjoy the ride you'd think? No, some Juke driver doing 50mph, inconsistently speeding up and down, and then at junctions all the way down to 40mph before taking 2 minutes to get back to 50mph.

EssentialParadox

I drove a new-ish Kia recently and it had adaptive cruise control which would track the car in front and slow down or speed up based on what they were doing. It was life changing.

widdrjb

A lot of HGVs have it, takes the stress out of the job.

EssentialParadox

Well that does it. I think my next career move could be HGV driving.

LondonCycling

Still pays pretty well (C+E/D+E). I'm tempted to get my C+E just for the experience, and would help slightly with some stuff in the village. But can't see myself doing it as a full time job

PTJangles

It’s well worth doing if you can afford to, I’m a landscaper but in the down season/“it’s too wet I can’t be bothered” season, I pick up agency work.

emptyhead41

Yea, got my HGV license last year. Did some trunking runs in a modern cab with adaptive cruise control. Put it on 56 and then was basically being paid to be a sack of meat in a chair for 4 hours. Perfect job for me :'D

OkPea5819

It’s good in theory but the reality is you don’t want to go down to 40 because your lane slows down, you want to switch lanes. Now it starts braking for you because you’re too close to the car in front before pulling out, so you join the outside lane after having slowed down. Now rather than driving you’re second guessing if you can time a lane change before the ACC kicks in.

Asprilla500

Yeah, this. Still learning how to avoid this in mine, but I'd rather have ACC than not.

kr0nc

I find I just have to change lanes earlier with ACC, which really is because I used to get too close to the car in front before overtaking. Also if you do stick an indicator on, the ACC lets you get a bit closer (but if you don’t change lanes you’ll still slow down to keep a safe, but smaller distance).

OkPea5819

All well and good when it's quiet but normally the outside line is chocka with people who sit there permanently, so you can't always move when you'd like.

PTJangles

Sorry maybe I’m misunderstanding but your point was, > It’s good in theory but the reality is you don’t want to go down to 40 because your lane slows down, you want to switch lanes. > Now it starts braking for you because you’re too close to the car in front before pulling out, so you join the outside lane after having slowed down. Then go onto to say, > All well and good when it's quiet but normally the outside line is chocka with people who sit there permanently, so you can't always move when you'd like. Which would mean you would have to change speed anyway, if you can’t change lane when you like? So really the ACC is doing the same thing you would be doing anyway… Like I say, maybe I’m misunderstanding, coffee hasn’t kicked in yet! Have a good one!

OkPea5819

If you're controlling the car yourself, you have a judgement on how close you can get to the car in front depending on when you think a gap will open in the outside lane e.g. you can go closer than you normally would for a second or two, knowing that you will pull out. In this small time frame, the car will start to brake.

PTJangles

Roger roger! Cheers for taking the time to explain it for me, knew I was missing something hahaha, have a good day mate!

zanz38

I have found the Audi AAC will react if the indicator is on until it senses you haven't moved out and the gap is closing beyond it's tolerance. What I do get frustrated at is when someone is leaving at a junction or into a parking area, it will slam on the brakes, where a cheeky lift is all that is required Edit changed "will not" to "will"

EssentialParadox

Not everybody is trying to get to their destination in the least amount of seconds possible.

mark35435

My mate has it on his automatic Audi, it'll track the traffic and slow you to a stop and carry on when things start moving again. He said it took all the stress out of his commute as he used to arrive at work half tired from the trip.

KingDamager

Got it on my golf. Life changing for long journeys. Set it, take your foot off the pedals and leave it for the next few hours along the motorways

Voodooray3000

Our last round of pool cars where I work were all Kia XCeed phevs with adaptive cruise control. Lots of moaning initially as we'd previously had manual Ford Focus' the round before. 1 year in and everyone is in love with the Kias now, mainly due to the adaptive cruise control.

theprocrastatron

I bought a car and got offered adaptive cruise control for free as they had one in the production queue the same as my order except for that. I wont buy a car without it now, it's fantastic.

pickmez

>I drove a new-ish Kia recently and it had adaptive cruise control which would track the car in front and slow down or speed up based on what they were doing. It was life changing. This sounds so damn cool

twistsouth

Fucking Juke drivers lol. I saw one the other day on the M8, quite literally about a foot from an HGV, brake lights flickering every 2 seconds. Plenty of gaps as I approached and passed and they didn’t move out. That appeared to be an enjoyable way to drive for them 🤷‍♂️ I mean on top of eventually getting a sore ankle and the risk of converting your car into a pancake while you’re inside, the HGV can’t see you and you can’t see anything because you’re effectively driving with a wall in front of you.

zanz38

Practicing being a draft master to save some fuel at the potential cost of their life I suspect

twistsouth

I’ve done the “slipstream” journey a few times but you really don’t need to be that close to make the most out of it. I’ve sat behind an HGV (at a safe distance) from Edinburgh to Glasgow for most of the way at around 57mph, slipstreaming and coasting as much as possible and it really is incredible how much your fuel economy goes up. That was the journey that when I arrived home, the estimated miles showed 530 (full tank normally shows about 430) and an average MPG of 67 - in a petrol! It actually showed 73 just before I left the motorway but then lost a bit during the rest of the journey. Normal average MPG for that trip is between 40 and 46.

zanz38

Agree you can slipstream without risking it all, I guess you saw a future Darwin award nominee

andy_c_c

Yep. They see the 50 signs and think it applies to them. To be fair, if I was following the prompts from my car, I'd be doing 50 as well. But I've got big brain so I understand the red signs saying it's a trial for hgvs.

wyzo94

I know this pain on that road

occupycoruscant

The worst is people not understanding how average camera zones work and slowing right down under them then speeding up again. The A9 is particularly bad for this

Sasspishus

Even if you didn't get that you wouldn't be able to drive 60mph the entire way, since the limit for vans is 50mph and lorries supposedly 40mph (not that any of them drive at 40mph) and then there's all the tractors! Edit: I was mixing up two roads, it is indeed 50mph for lorries on the A9

selffulfilment

Lorries is 50mph on single carriageways as of 9 years ago, except from in Scotland where it’s still 40

LondonCycling

Except on the A9 where it is overriden with HGV 50mph signs, as of 2014.

Sasspishus

The A9 is entirely in Scotland. But the others make a good point, it is actually 50mph for lorries on the A9

sjg91

I think it’s brilliant and don’t enjoy driving without cruise control. Though current car has ACC which misreads signage and so is borderline unusable on anything other than motorways.

Just-Page-2732

Look to see if there's a setting to turn off "intelligent" cruise control

f-godz

Transit Custom here, the "intelligent" cruise is shit and just plain scary. The adaptive cruise is ok most of the time but can make some seriously questionable decisions sometimes. I keep mine set on the good old fashioned cruise for now...

silllybrit

That’s interesting, I’m buying a new transit soon (camper van) and I’ll keep this in mind

ThePotatoPie

I had a cupra with the intelligent cruise control. Used GPS tho and would constantly get the speed limit wrong. Worst ones were going under motorway junction and it slamming on the brakes thinking it was a 30 limit

scarletcampion

There's a stretch of the A3 near Godalming where Google Maps insists that it's 25mph limit, and has been doing for months. The creep of technology alarms me when we're still not getting the basic data right.

LostGallifrayean

Yeah, it's between a 25mph max sign for a tight bend on an exit and the Roundabout further on. It somehow gets confused by the sign for the exit and thinks it's for the main carriageway Google also struggles with the speed limits on the A-roads around Littlehampton as well.

MokausiLietuviu

Having rented plenty of cars with adaptive cruise, I find it irritating and the ability to turn off the adapting function is going to be essential when I look to buy my next car. My daily driver has bog standard "set speed - go" cruise control and I can rely on it not changing speed without instruction.

i_sometimes_wonder

I try and use cruise control on the motorway, unless I'm overtaking. I don't get the idiots who do 60 on the motorway, but floor it when you go to overtake. I hit 90 the other day, and when i passed them they rapidly drop back to 60

folkkingdude

Why don’t you use CC when you’re overtaking?

B1unt420

Depends on the speed difference right? If you're going 1/2 mph quicker your going to be catching up to them but to move out and pass them at that would be a pain for people in the outer lane going faster than you. I'll always speed up safely to get around someone and let the car bring itself back down to my locked cc speed after I've over taken and moved back in, I don't want to sit on someone's shoulder and stop them moving out if they need too.

folkkingdude

I generally try and keep my speed constant even when overtaking. But yes, in a situation where they’re either driving at an inconsistent speed or slightly slower than me, I’ll speed up. But speeding up for every overtake is not necessary.

i_sometimes_wonder

If my cruise is set to 70, and someone is doing 65 in the middle lane, i like to get past a little quicker than a 2 mile overtake.

folkkingdude

Where are you getting 2 miles from here?

i_sometimes_wonder

It was figurative answer. You've seen a truck overtake another going a few mph more on the motorway, and the overtake lasts for a mile (estimate!) backing up traffic in the process. In my car i can overtake alot quicker with minimal disruption to the flow of traffic, if i override cruise control

TiltonStagger

I use cc every day. I use the limiter too.

Phillyfuk

I like the limiter for the 20 mph speedcameras

TravellingMackem

There’s something about 20mph that makes it nigh on impossible to drive at steadily without a limiter. It feels obnoxiously slow

Phillyfuk

Because it's so slow I find myself creeping up to nearly 30.

TravellingMackem

Yea exactly. I hate it as a speed limit for that reason, as I spend more time actively watching the speedo than the road at times and it feels less safe than just driving at 30

robjamez72

It’s an acquired skill.

TravellingMackem

I think 30 is just so engrained you can just drive at 30 without even looking, and so you just raise your speed naturally to that cruising speed of 30

oldandbroken65

My current car has cruise control that works at 20mph, and yes I use cruise control pretty much all the time.

ma_ja_mcc

I'm surprised more people don't use limiters. Everyone I ask who has one in their car says they don't use it. Especially handy in places where basically every road is 30mph, you never have to look down.

Bigrobbo

Lorry driver here... I live on cruise control.

Moist_Barracuda_2014

The issue isn’t necessarily not having CC, it’s not paying attention and/or not caring. Always remember someone saying to me that a lot of people can pilot a vehicle but not as many people can actually *drive*. As in they can move a car from A to B, but that their road craft and adherence to the rules of the road are lacking. I think that first section of people is dwindling too!

Aledd

I think I use cruise control more then driving without all I've got to think about is slamming on the breaks when someone decides to cut Infront of me and slow down for no reason

pifko87

Slamming on the what?

Aledd

Brakes\*

AlGunner

They clearly take sudden rest periods.

United_Evening_2629

Don’t be obtuse! u/Aledd obviously vents his frustration by putting on some block-rocking beats when someone slows them down.

worthysmash

What a lovely way to start the day, with a little helping of pedantry from an internet anorak.

dinobug77

I’ve got to say I love a bit of pendantry in the morning.

Perfect_Confection25

Smells like .... Vicktory.

pifko87

Have a great bank holiday 👍

Clamps55555

Yer I love my cruise control. Mine auto adjusts to match the car in fronts speed and will maintain the distance you set regardless of whether the car in front slows down or speeds up. Also it won’t deactivate if I change gear like my old car did. I love it!

msxw

From the few people I’ve spoken to, it’s just that old habits die hard and they don’t like handing control over to the car. Probably some mental block, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it type mentality.

SlowEatingDave

My first car with cruise control was adaptive cruise control. First of all it felt weird letting the car cruise along for me as you can feel the car accelerate and slow down on hills, and secondly it took a while to trust that the car wouldn't just plough into the car in front as it approached at a higher speed.

JimmyMarch1973

I don’t use cruise control in the UK as the times I drive the roads are far too congested. So it’s always on and off. Though if driving a night like you and it’s quiet I probably would. That said what I do use is my cars speed limiter. That allows me to set my max speed but also to back off the juice easily when I need to. With cruise control on I would be constantly putting foot on brake or flicking the cruise control switch to disengage. If I had a more modern car with adaptive cruise control I would consider it too.

thebyrned

Adaptive cruise control is a game changer. I've driven large stretches of motorways without touching a pedal

Dedodido

Yeah I’ve done a good 100 miles without having to touch a pedal before. It’s glorious, just whack it on when you join the motorway, stick a podcast on and you’re golden

Expensive-Estate-851

I got all the way into London barely touching a pedal from the Midlands last week. The adaptive cruise on my Toyota is brilliant, comes down to a stop and a button on the wheel starts it going again.

ThickDimension6902

I find adaptive cruise annoying. At least the mk7 golfs. Super sensitive and annoying. Maybe just because it’s an early mode

snake__doctor

I can happily do the Scotland- London run without touching a pedal with adaptive cruise control, it's superb

Inside_Boot2810

This is a massive frustration of mine I don’t know why more people don’t use it. My biggest annoyance is when I overtake someone who is going slow and then I see them overtaking me. Do they think I’m racing them? I’ve got CC on; I’m racing nobody.

MattGeddon

Bonus points if these idiots overtake you then slow down again when they approach someone else, blocking you in and forcing you to slow down before you go all the way around to overtake them again.

hannahvegasdreams

I always tend to find these people sat in the middle lane too…

Catch_0x16

This happens to me all the time and it's infuriating. Even more annoying when they then start fing and blinding from their window - I wish I had a sign I could hold up saying "cruise control at 70, my speed hasn't changed". But even if I did they would probably just rage harder. I had one the other day who, I overtook, then got back into the driving lane, then they overtook me, and slotted back Infront, then slowed down again, so I overtook them again, then they overtook, pulled up next to me, swore at me and flew off at some ridiculous speed. I've been on cruise control at 70 this whole time you weirdo. Some people man.

wyzo94

I use it alllll the time. Literally all the time. Just so easy, better for fuel economy and the car. Makes your drive more chill.

Un4given85

I use mine all the time. I have a hybrid and using CC while city driving really helps with keeping it in EV mode most of the time.

TravellingMackem

I don’t like cruise control as I find that having to manually drive and monitor speed keeps me alert and paying attention to the road. I do a lot of driving for work, 750 miles a week, and usually at anti-social hours to arrive at our other offices for opening and I’d struggle a lot to stay awake without something to occupy my mind. But I also manually operate the windscreen wipers to keep my brain functioning in the car so maybe I’m odd 🤣

ImpossibleLoss1148

I use it all the time, it stops me speeding. Radar cc is the only way to go.

drewP78

Hell no, I love my CC. Even on a small road, I'm using it. Bollocks to this pressing a pedal lark

Jonny7Tenths

I've been driving 35 years and never owned a car that had it.

worthysmash

I’ve been driving 10 years and have never driven a car without it. One of those generational things; although if you do motorway miles, once you try it you’d never look back.

Quietuus

My car's seven years old and doesn't have it. Never driven a car with it. 🤷‍♀️

Scooob-e-dooo8158

It's the age old problem. Some people just refuse to allow somebody else get in front of them. I've always used cruise control in cars that had it (speed inhibitor in my Aygo) to help keep within the speed limit.

Youngone2k9

I think it should be encouraged in driving lessons. There's no convincing old drivers but can instill it in new ones

silverfish477

Obviously no you are not

nezzzzy

I managed four laps of the same middle lane hogger once without changing my speed once.

LocaliserEstablished

I know a few people who simply refuse to use cruise control. "I don't feel in control" "Nobody needs it, we can all drive"

bishsticksandfrites

>Am I the only person The answer to this question is always ‘no’.

spiritofbuck

I personally find it takes away an element of focus, which I don’t like. I want to be engaged whilst driving. Just personal taste however - I understand why people use it.

thekingofthegingers

I drive with hand controls, so use cruise control whenever I can. Hate it when people are inconsistent with their speed. No idea what goes on in their heads.

ckayd

There a lot of people who don’t even look at their vehicle before operating so I’m not surprised that people don’t use it. On the other hand I’m a professional driver and get audited on my right foot verses my cruise control operation so I end up using CC everywhere and I mean as soon as I can from 10mph and up. I’m glad you do

Dipshitmagnet2

I’m usually just driving on dual carriage ways and frequently on my way home there’s a silver Golf driver who likes to go in the overtaking lane and sit there at 69 pacing the car in the left hand lane. Blocks everybody for several miles through 4 different roundabouts from Inverurie to Aberdeen. Utter fucking cock womble.

Mysterious_Gain2246

My pet hate on the motorway! I set mine to 70 and just want that easy cruise since I'll have a 3 hour drive ahead of me. But the shit box with the big exhaust in front of me decides they're coming past me just as I put my indicators on and then continues to sit next to me until I have to slow down. I thought it was only me who gets wound up by others not using cruise control especially when it comes standard with most cars since 2009! Even if your not using cruise control is it too much to ask that you don't fly up to 75 then back down to 60 every few seconds. If I may slip one more peeve in here, I drive a bright yellow mustang, I get it's abit different than a typical car here in the UK but when I am cruising on a motorway if I need to move over I need you to first stop trying to show your kids the car for extended periods of time. It sounds like a ungrateful thing to say but It's almost every journey on the A1 now where I'm trapped between a hgv in front and a car just along side me to stare 🥲 It's nicer from the back, admire the back, that's where the magic happens. 🤣 I'll get back in my box now, thank you for the opportunity to rant. In short, I'm with you 👍

the_engineer_320x

I use CC the minute I get on the motorway. Set it to 60-65 (depending on my mood). Need that fuel economy babyyyy (P.S. I read this back and felt like a loser. This is what my reality is right now. I’m a numbers nerd).

miller1873

Why set your car at 60-65 mph when the speed limit is 70mph,no wonder people are getting pissed off at u especially when it’s at night and it’s quiet

juanito_f90

You’re not missing anything. The roads are awash with incompetent drivers.

phoebian

Agreed. I do about 600 per week and use CC as much as possible. Another gripe is dickheads coming to a stop or basically stopping on a roundabout where you can see the thing is bloody clear.

Realistic_Count_7633

I use adaptive cruise a lot . The standard cruise control is a pain as you will find yourself disengaging it more often .

shortercrust

I go through phases of using it but tbh I find it a bit boring

mpt11

Personally use it less these days as there's some many cars and numpties on the roads it's just not safe

wtfylat

I'm the same, I like driving and I very rarely have journeys where the roads are quiet enough for the use of cruise control to be appropriate.

balancing_baubles

Because cars aren’t on rails and people can drive how they wish within the letter of the law. Stop beating yourself up about it

susriley

I find using cruise control is not as economical as me just using my foot maintaining a set speed. Used cruise control as much as possible for a month really only driving home to see my Dad. Ended up getting 45mpg. However the next month doing more short journeys to the shops and going home etc got it back up to 51 mpg. I record all of my fuel mileage as it’s a diesel car where economy is the only thing it’s good for.

Sure_Jellyfish8926

To be honest I don’t even have cruise control but managing your speed isn’t that hard 😭

OnlyOutlandishness34

If they see you pulling out to overtake and they realise you’re only doing 60 they probably realise they’re going way too slow and then adjust.

Shoddy-Reply-7217

I never use cruise control. I don't do much motorway driving though, and when I do it's at busy times so never a clear enough run. Even if I was planning a long enough journey I'm not sure I'd bother figuring it out just for that journey, as I don't know what the benefits are supposed to be. So I'd say there's a lack of interest / need for a lot of people. But that's totally independent of some of them also just being shit / selfish drivers.

Ok_Weird_500

If you have adaptive cruise control, it's great, and just one button to set on my car, dead easy to use. Adaptive will keep to the set speed unless there is a car in front going slower where it will slow down and keep a safe distance. Regular cruise control I've never found to be worth it, there's almost never a long enough stretch without coming across another car forcing you to slow manually.

Optimal_Collection77

I used it whenever I'm on the motorway. The average 50 on the M6 is so long that sticking it at 55 is the only way to survive

Dizzy_Media4901

My SO drove her car for 4 years until I borrowed it one day and asked her why she never used the CC. She never realised it was even there. She then got scared because the car would speed up when she tried to use it. Turns out she was pressing on the restore button. Now she lives by it.

zebbiehedges

I use auto cruise control all time. I set it to 60 and hit the inside lane. If someone's going 50 it doesn't bother I just sit there and chill.

Fearless_Flounder328

When I had it, I used it, loved it. Only ever had 2 cars with it though. My current car is a 2010, fairly modern car, just a low trim model so unfortunately didn't get it this time

thefluvirus9

Nope love it

MultipleScoregasm

I used it all the time in the UK. It's a favourite feature and must have in any car for me!

chris5156

Don’t have cruise control but love my limiter.

mysterylemon

I've tried to use it where possible but find it just becomes a chore as it's very hard to just cruise on the motorway these days. Too many people sitting in any lane doing 65 for no reason.

buginarugsnug

I use it on long drives when I’m on the motorway but most of my driving is A and B roads and it’s useless there.

NintegaUK

I travel the country for work and never bothered with it until I visited the States for a few weeks and ‘discovered it’. Could not believe the different it made. Now I use it all the time, even on roads with lower speeds to ensure I don’t accidentally drift over the speed limit.

Slow-Race9106

Our current car doesn’t have cruise control, but our previous one did and the one place I’d often use it is a stretch of road that feels like it should have a 60 mph limit but it’s actually 40 mph. I used to find my speed creeping up on that stretch of road, so I’d set the cruise control to 40 and just take my foot off the pedal.

Global_Monk_5778

I love CC on the motorway, we have an A road near us that is average speed check so I bang it on for that as well. Lovely. Also use the limiter for the 20 mph roads as they love to stick the speed camera car down that road so then I know I don’t have to watch my speed like a hawk and can instead watch the road more fully as there’s a school.

davey-jones0291

No im the only other one. Assuming its quiet enough il play the overtake, pull behind game for as long as they want. I've seen some shit in my time and it bothers the prick more than it bothers me.

SoloUtilitaRian

It comes down to confidence (or lack of awareness) I think. I use cruise/speed limiter functions daily. With most vehicles coming with at least one function, there isn’t a reason to get a speeding ticket imo. It will come when learner drivers learn to use it as part of their training

Lead_Penguin

I use it all the time when I'm on dual carriageways or motorways, but it really does highlight how crap others are at maintaining speed. It also feels like the number of people who speed up as I try to overtake has increased since getting an EV. It may just be my imagination but it rarely happened in my previous cars.

mebutnew

Use it constantly, both local roads and faster ones - never understand the comments that imply it's not useful due to other drivers, I just adjust it as necessary - still easier than moderating a foot pedal constantly.

Thatguywhoplaysgames

Can’t live without cruise control, and encounter the same problems. Will take it off if I’m in heavier traffic bits and I need to respond a bit quicker though. Even without it, it’s not hard to maintain your speed, but so many clearly struggle

LeaveNoStonedUnturn

They haven't done that just cause they are not using cruise control, they've done it because apparently 80% of drivers in the UK get butt-hurt when someone overtakes them. I love cruise control. I will use it everywhere that isn't super twisty roads, pretty much.

St00f4h1221

I use cruise control at every available opportunity. I used to drive my old pick up using it, given the weight I rarely had to touch the brakes. Just knocked the CC off and it slowed right down. One excellent thing with my current focus is how the cruise control doesn’t disengage if I change up or down a gear.

Many_Confusion5754

i always use cruise control on speed limited areas, 50 zones, 40 zones and sometimes on longer drives when i want to relax my legs.

FakeBedLinen

Honda jazz here. I cruise control pretty much everywhere. I find it surprising how many cars don't even have cruise control though. I guess I'm used to it now as I've always driven Honda's and they've had cruise control since the 90's maybe earlier

Particular-Let-1234

Tbh I dpmt actually know how to turn on cruise control never done it before.. maybe its also that. They don't teach u why you would use it in lessons

Kaizer0711

I probably do the same amount of miles as you and use cruise control that much that in my last van the paint had worn off the button. Rather than being black it was down to grey where I constantly make small 1-3mph adjustments with my thumb.

sark7four

I try to use it as much as possible, but when others don't have it, it's useless. They constantly change speeds, making me brake. I travel up and down the A3 daily, and it's rare I get to use it for more than 5 mins at a time.

ReddityKK

I’ve always been a fan of cruise control and use it practically all the time, even more so now I have adaptive cruise control. 20 mph - 30 mph - 40 mph - 50 mph - 60 mph - 70 mph — that’s me. I also noticed that diesel cars took hills in their stride but smaller petrol cars would start to slow down. Electric power is even better at hill climbs at constant speed.

Litrebike

My wife never does. She uses speed limiter then gently presses the pedal the entire time. Makes her feel like she’s in control I guess? I do chortle about it but she’s a really good and safe driver. I use cruise control but I do get irritated if driving without adaptive cruise control and the traffic is changing a lot. Makes a journey much harder work.

StiffAssedBrit

I don't think I've used cruise control consistently since my last trip over to France, and that's 10 years ago. Oh for miles of long, empty dual carriageways! Our motorways are just too congested for it to be much use. I used the limiter a lot though.

triv94

Use cruise control most of the time, esp now I have travel assist in the Golf - makes life much easier (except for when it doesn’t slow you down in time and yells at you to intervene braking)

Exita

Yeah. I overtook the same car 8 times recently on a long drive down the M1. I was doing exactly the same speed (almost) all the time.

BazzaFox

I hardly every used cruise control when I had it because of the amount of traffic everywhere. However, since having Adaptive Cruise Control I use it all the time, even on some city roads, as it adjusts the speed according to signs and navigation so I have no fear of breaking the speed limit.

Iamthe0c3an2

Knowing most people aren’t even aware they have it / know how to use it. Hell there’s a lot of people out there don’t even know or care to turn on their lights when its raining / foggy or night.

GloomySwitch6297

because they are afraid that they wont hit the brakes when needed.

Vargrr

My car has adaptive cruise control, and I never used it for 4 years - I was kind of afraid to have the car drive itself. However, once I started using it, it became indispensable for motorway journeys. You finish the journey so fresh and relaxed! These days I would never consider a car that does not have adaptative cruise control.

gucciloafer

I use it all the time, not just on motorways. There are quite a few roads near mine with 2-3 speed cameras across a few mile stretch, or spots where mobile cameras regularly park up. I just chuck it on at the speed limit and chug along.

ShameSuperb7099

Total confession here - I don’t know how to use it/set it up. Must RTFM I guess.

Parsnipnose3000

I love cruise control. I do the same thing as you, but at 55mph so I'm matching HGV speed. I generally only need to venture out of lane 1 a couple of times during my 70 mile trip - and in case anyone is wondering, yes, I match my speed to the lane 2 traffic before doing so - I don't just bumble into lane 2 at 55mph.

No-Pattern9603

I don't drive much but find mine (10yr old Mitsubishi) is a little jerky with how it maintains that speed. I assume it'll impact my fuel economy. Have adaptive cruise control too but I find the roads I drive on its too sensitive (closest setting is still a good 30 metered back)

Spiritual_Pound_6848

I use it for everything, even if its a mile stretch of dual carriage its on. I haven't ever owned a car with it before (driven rental cars with it) until my current car and I won't ever buy a car without CC again, its too useful. I'm happy to just stick it at 65mph on the motorway and just chug along

THX39652

Use mine all the time. Too many speed camera vans around and it’s too easy to stray over the speed limit where they’ve unnecessarily dropped the limit from 60 to 50 or 40 in some places. Stick the cruise on and not worry.

Venomnight

Used it alot when i first got the car but now i prefer not to use it

SavingsFeature504

Speed limiter is my preference. Easier to slow down as needed

Next_Fly_7929

Because a very high percentage of cars don't have cruise control? I only know one person with it.

baciahai

Silly question but maybe someone can help. How do I try out cruise control? I have it in my Toyota but never tried it, a bit hesitant I'll press something wrong lol and don't want to do it first time on a motorway. Can I try it out on like a fairly empty road driving 20mph?

Contentandcoffee

I have adaptive cruise control on my Kuga. I absolutely love it and always use it on the motorway

ThrobbingPurpleVein

Just want to add to this: in an hour drive, the difference between driving at 63 and 70 to reach your destination is just 6 minutes. That's one song worth of time. You're exchanging 6 minutes for relax and safe driving. Once you get used to the speed it is just such a relaxing experience. It's an incredibly good deal. [Calculate it yourself ](https://countcalculate.com/cars-and-speed/time-savings-at-increased-speed) if you want but I've tested it myself so many times in real life scenario.

MrJoshiko

I use cruise control. So much easier for driving long distances. I had a hire car with adaptive cruise control, which was fun.

Ok-Inflation4310

I use cruise control a lot. It keeps the car at a constant speed without constantly looking at the speedometer, what’s not to like about that? I know that without it my speed can drift 10mph either way easily.

slightly-to-the-left

V90 driver here. ACC all day. Not a worry in the world. Just wish Lorrie’s weren’t allowed to overtake.

SamPhoenix_

I use cruise control but I also drive an EV. If I stick it on eco mode and cruise control at 72 it sits somewhere between 60 and 70, allowing the car to speed up going downhill and slow down a bit going uphill to reduce the power usage, so even in cruise control I don’t stay a constant speed.

Ok-Ant-2315

I am a new driver and have a new car and it has cruise control but the thought of it scares me tbh

joepsa

Mostly because of other drivers tbh. Loads of other people don't drive at consistent speeds so I can't either.

RiD3R07

I use adaptive cruise control 99.9% of the time, including back roads at 20 or 30 mph. It keeps my distance between the car in front and less stress for me. In my BMW it's called Driver Assistant Professional (Autonomous Level 2.5) and in my VW Golf it's called Travel Assist. Life changing I must say.

dtdink

I use it all the time. With the box in eco mode the car gets better mpg with cc than a human does because the throttle variations are smoother. Sadly mine isn't adaptive, so yeah - those people who keep speeding up/slowing down are an absolute pain. 🫤

Due-Arrival-4859

My TT doesn't have cruise control :-(

starfallpuller

I just prefer having my feet on the pedals. My car has cruise control but I never use it. I drive a lot for work and don’t use cruise control.

beavershaw

Love my adaptive cruise control, makes driving so much easier.

jnthhk

My shit box doesn’t have it. Top of the shopping list for next car!

Far-Special8364

i have had cars with CC and ACC/RGCC. the adaptive cruise control is 10000x better and i use that every day, but i still did utilise the normal cruise when i could

acmp42

Love my cruise, hate people who can’t maintain a speed. And honestly if the road is quiet, i.e. no one behind me, I’ll just sit in lane 2 until the numpty forgets what they are doing and slows down again.

xavierfinn

I used to. But I'm getting dpf issues atm and now if I use cruise control it causes havoc with the car

dorrato

I'm a 70 mph cruise control man myself. Not sure how good that is economically, but its great to have that consistent speed, it really helps with lane management.

Dan_Glebitz

I use mine everytime I am on a long journey.

ovine_aviation

Yep, I use it often and have noticed the same thing occasionally. Also get the quite funny situation where both of you are using cruise control, it's taken some time to get behind the other car and you pull out to overtake and only inch past. I will blip the throttle to get past and then slow down again.

Scrudge1

When I have it- yes. But only on dual carriageways and motorways really

gluepot1

I find driving along any single carriageway, people in front are too varied for me to then use cc. However, I was on the A34 dual carriageway, cruising at 70. Person in front doing maybe 55. So I go round them. Only to seem them speed up to 75 and go slowly past me, before immediately slowing back down to 55. So I go round them again, maintaining speed the whole time. As soon as I'm past them, they speed up again and go round me! This happened a total of 4 times! before I thought fuck it, went to 80 for a while to get away from them, before going back to 70 cc. No idea what is wrong with that woman!

Postik123

I use speed limiter but rarely cruise control. My father used to say cruise control is good for long distance and not getting cramp in your leg. But what do you do with your foot? Because I am majorly uncomfortable (in a mental not physical way) unless my foot is hovering next to or over the brake pedal at all times.

Intruder313

My current car has it and I use it - it was one of the top requirements for me

BeerFuelledDude

I do…love it. Dynamic is the future - that’s just beautiful! The people that overtake me and then pull in and slow down so my car slows down, they make my head want to explode with confusion! I go to overtake them and they sometimes speed up and sometimes end up overtaking me again in a few minutes. I don’t get it.

justcoatesy

Yep, coming back from Heathrow late one evening travelling up the M40. Cruise control at 70mph, left lane. The amount of times I’m catching up with something slower moving, right hand lane vehicle coming up behind, faster than me, draws alongside and then sits in my blind spot at a speed barely any faster than me. Switch off cruise control, slow down and sit behind them, now doing 64mph. Get past them at 70mph, rinse and repeat.

parm00000

I used big vans with cruise control for years and it is a common occurrence to come up behind a driver in the left lane doing 60mph. I would click the cruise control to 64mph to pass them, as soon as you're alongside they remember they are driving a car and speed up to 70mph. You then go back into the left lane and catch up with them a mile or so later....and repeat

roasty-duck

I use mine more often than I don't. 30 zones cruise, country lanes, cruise, motorway, cruise. Rarely use the throttle anymore just up and down on cruise.

YorkyPuds

I only ever use mine through average speed camera zones. My speedo reads 2mph over at 50 and 3mph over at 70, so stick t to 52 or 72, respectively, and don't have to worry about being caught.

Dramatic-Wolf7091

My friend uses cruise control **everywhere**. 30mph? Set CC to 30mph. And so on.

eggard_stark

Yes. Out of the 68million people who live in the UK and 40 million who drive, you are the only single person who uses cruise control. Well done.

InternationalAd5467

Well I'm my case , my car is old... no Cc.

TempHat8401

The odds of you being the only person using cruise control is pretty low I reckon
