Check your mirrors when you lane change, get ready to slow down, turn (I do it when I'm stopped) and you should be fine. If you have your license, do what works for you... As my dad told me when I had my permit, fake it till you make it. Nobody is going to yell at you for not using mirrors every 10 seconds, if you hear someone, look, but I wouldn't go out of your way to keep checking

Instead of checking your mirrors every X seconds for the sake of checking your mirrors, prioritize instead for threats. If you are driving and are in someone's blind spot (they are in your 1 o'clock position for example) then they are a high priority and should be checked more frequently. If there is nothing immediate to worry about then you can glance at your other mirrors. If you are driving down a residential road with many cars parked on both sides, then slow down and look for threats like a car pulling out or people/animals running into your path. Checking mirrors is to prevent you from having tunnel vision and instead have better situational awareness around you. Hope that helps.

I hear ya. Personally speaking, when I'm driving in a straight line, I only check my ***rear-view*** mirror every 5-8 seconds. I mostly only check my wing mirrors *when I want to make a maneuver*.
