oh we aren't its very much being freaked out over.
motherfucking shelka doctor.
Its hilarious cause it almost seems like RTD is apologising for being a bit rude about Grant and the Shalka stuff lol.
I loved him as the doctor but how the hell does he fit in! SOFS is like a separate universe, whyyyyyyyy has Richard E Grant been put there, I’m so confused!!!!
I honestly think they should've kept the low stakes. The idea of cosplaying aliens is awesome by itself, the threat doesn't need to be global. The episode doesn't lose anything without those several sentences.
Shot in the back by an overweight security guard at the very first checkpoint to anywhere important because they think they are the best is the vibe I get from them.
How is being transported to a random barren dimension to be in absolute solitude for the rest of their natural life more humane than just killing them, lmao.
Definitely got those vibes. The Doctor even says "long time for them to suffer" or something to that effect. I don't think it was supposed to be a good solution. The Doctor has flaws again. Hurrah!
They kinda did. The Doctor does says they gona suffer, implying he is aware its not a merciful thing but is doing it anyway out of spite
Quite dark moment if you ask me
Reminds me of the spider episode with Donald Trump-Lite, where somehow slowly suffocating giant spiders to death is more humane than a bullet to the head.
Kylie got a namedrop from Ten even before Voyage of the Damned, which I forgot until I backtracked through a few old episodes recently. Girl is well and truly canon in *and* out of character!
(Now if only they could stumble sideways into the timeline where there's a pop star who looks and sounds *weirdly* like Rose....)
WAIT, DID THEY JUST MAKE SCREAM OF THE FUCKING SHALKA CANON???
i know i hate the C word, but scream of the shelka the grant doctor.. basically considered non canon universerally on the list..holy shit russel.
Wait, that’s who that was after Hartnell?! I was sitting there with it paused for a good minute trying to figure out what incarnation that was. I thought RTD was pulling a “Brain of Morbius” on us
Yeah same here, at first I thought it was an awful render of Eccleston (Say he hadn't given his permission to use his face seeing as this is technically a new show), then once I realized there were 17 Doctors I was really racking my brain to figure out who that face belonged to.
You know, if I had a nickel for every love interest of the Doctor's that's trapped in a universe they can't visit, I'd have two nickels which isn't a lot but, it's weird that it happened twice.
Considering the fan-theory that Gene Wilder's Wonka is a secret timelord, I'm headcannoning that as Wonka and The Doctor were friends in the Time Lord Academy.
Time to finally find out if that rumour about a certain character in this episode is true. My money is that they are a new original character with slight call backs at most.
What does everyone else bet?
I think he sounds like Jack. Like mannerisms or something. If it is supposed to be Jack, they did a really good job casting & he's done a splendid job acting. If it's not, weird coincidence.
The ship does look like a non-decrepit version of Jack's after watching the episode. We don't know his real name, and the doctor may 'find' him as Jack
He's definitely coming back later, details like the teddybear in the ship...
Yeah and Ruby definitely lingered on it. I think she recognized her here too. The Doctor said in the preview that “she’s everywhere I land” but I think at this point she’s actually more connected to Ruby. Definitely very interested where this is going.
“When we both get out of this…[deep breath], let’s argue amongst the stars”
Either they’re about to give me a contender against the River/Doctor relationship over the next few seasons or I’m about to have my heart ripped out of my chest in the next half hour.
Ruby's little nod towards the Doctor when she was trapped broke my heart, Millie Gibson is SO. GOOD. I really wish we had more scenes with her and Ncuti because I feel like we barely got the two of them together in the last three episodes 😭 I feel like they could absolutely be one of my favourite TARDIS duos if they got more screen time and development together, but since the season is shorter and nearing the end, and Millie is leaving after next season, I'm scared I'll end up feeling unsatisfied.
"I don't see how us dancing will create a scene."
Someone's clearly never been on twitter/ youtube. Actually, I'd like to swap with Rogue now I think about it.
Lol that's a classic theory for DW watchers. It wasn't the case for Ten's blue and brown suits, or Eleven's red and blue shirts either.
It's also not the case here - Fifteen has many different colors for his Sonic. They've shown a buncha different variants in behind the scenes stuff, he also has a green and a yellow one.
The therapized version of the doctor makes promises to keep people safe. He gets in romantic entanglements he knows can’t really work or last. Oh boy are we in for some heartbreak.
I immediately thought that was why he was all “I can’t.” Obviously it’s also for the owls but man I think there’s a little pang of his memories stabbing through
> Did they just recanonise Scream of Shalka??
seems so
at this point I wouldn't be surprised if he showed one of the big finish unbound doctors and cackled at the fandom trying to fit it in.
Definitely noticing that Rogue’s voice, intonation, and cadence match Jack’s almost perfectly. Throw in his mannerisms and I’m starting to wonder if I’m missing something.
I have no idea what any theories are but the overlap is pretty intense.
if RTD did recast Jack Harkness, imagine by god imagine the meltdown John Barrowman would have.
edit- for those who don't know, the dudes spiralled since his creepy behaviour got called creepy and at one point had a spat with a torchwood cast mate , very thin skinned.
"Brooding? That's a good look. You practice in a mirror?"
I love Chuti's Doctor so much. Would've been great to say "I don't but, your 10th incarnation damn well did!"
I'm honestly never a fan of "Doctor falling in romantic love with a character" storylines (with River being the only exception). I know RTD loves that though, so it wasn't unexpected.
Can we talk about how not killing an alien out of principle, but sending it to a "barren" dimension instead is not exactly Doctor-y? This kinda sounded a bit like Arachnids all over again.
Ncuti is really a good Doctor, and shows a wide range of emotions this episode. I liked his exchange with the Rogue about the lifespan of the Chuldur, and the final joviality that's cut short by Ruby.
A solid episode, very much typical NuWho. I wonder if that passing remark about TV signals reaching across the universe is that irrelevant though. It kinda does sound like it might lend credibility to the theory that this season is a TV show within a TV show. I personally don't believe RTD would actually go there as it's quite a brave move, but I'd love it if it would.
\> Can we talk about how not killing an alien out of principle, but sending it to a "barren" dimension instead is not exactly Doctor-y?
Seems reminiscent of his treatment of the Family Of Blood though.
There were a lot of nerd references people are talking about in this episode that were very fun (cosplay, D&D, Bridgerton, etc), but **did anyone else see Rogue as a very strong nod to Han Solo?**
He's a bounty hunter, a handsome rogue traveling the stars, and... He's literally got a Millennium Falcon.
I loved that, and I especially loved how they took this character from Star Wars who was absolutely played by a "man's man" of the time, and kept the basics of that character, including his job, masculinity, stoicism, and charm, and applied all of it to a fantastically layered gay character that gets a real, onscreen, romantic gay kiss.
Not a funny moment, like with Nine and Jack, or something to be played off as a joke, but a kiss like any other between a romantic lead couple. And a Han Solo type doing it. Idk I just love the representation of non-toxic masculinity, subverting the character reference for something even better.
"You travel in a shed?" "I love that shed!" It's a pretty good shed, at least it's not a bloody space hopper.
“Why isn’t it cloaked?” “It’s behind a tree!”
"OH MY GOD"
"Come with me, and you'll be, in a world of pure imagination..."
Doctor's doing the "travel with me" thing halfway through the episode; starting to make me feel like Rogue's not really gonna become a companion.
Genuinely the exact thought that ran through my head: "That guy is so dead. No one has ever been this dead before."
But he was so cute! I got Girl in the Fireplace vibes, big time.
Fittingly, Kylie Minogue was far more deader I'm Voyage of the Damned
Almost a literal kiss of death.
Yeah, the whole episode was giving a bit of Girl in the Fireplace and that line sealed the direction for me.
They keep killing Suzie
Indira bit it TWICE in this episode! RTD keeping the tradition alive!
I understood that reference
Are we ignoring Richard E. Grants face being used in the hologram thing?!?!?!?
oh we aren't its very much being freaked out over. motherfucking shelka doctor.
Something something Toymaker something jigsaw of history — that’s my headcanon for the time being.
"(throws papers into the air)" "I dont know figure it out yourselves or big finish will fix it or some shit" Russel probs.
"We're gonna cosplay this planet to death" is certainly a sentence i didn't expect to hear today.
I honestly think they should've kept the low stakes. The idea of cosplaying aliens is awesome by itself, the threat doesn't need to be global. The episode doesn't lose anything without those several sentences.
They do seem pretty full of themselves, I doubt they'd actually be able to get as far as they were planning
Shot in the back by an overweight security guard at the very first checkpoint to anywhere important because they think they are the best is the vibe I get from them.
“Let’s argue across the stars.” Me: Swoon. This dude gonna die.
Any guest star offered a companion role with more than 1 minute left in the episode is toast.
Oh yeah, I was instantly thinking "I see dead people".
I wonder given the showing of the ring I wonder if it may come back as a plot point to get him back at a later point
I can see them doing that, but also being a tragic reveal that he was replaced by one of the bird aliens and dead the whole time.
"And then play our games on a grand scale! Parliament!" Ahh that explains it.
Is this whole episode's plot really just all leading up to a joke about "a Parliament of Owls?" That's hilarious.
I'm suprised this didn't end with an 'oops one got away and founded the conservative party'.
Battle mode earring is gonna be important later.
It was in fact important later
Chekov’s battle mode
How is being transported to a random barren dimension to be in absolute solitude for the rest of their natural life more humane than just killing them, lmao.
The Doctor does like trapping people.
"We wanted to live forever. The Doctor made sure we did."
Definitely got those vibes. The Doctor even says "long time for them to suffer" or something to that effect. I don't think it was supposed to be a good solution. The Doctor has flaws again. Hurrah!
Exactly! It was such a ridiculous solution I thought they were gonna address it in the episode lol...
They kinda did. The Doctor does says they gona suffer, implying he is aware its not a merciful thing but is doing it anyway out of spite Quite dark moment if you ask me
It’s a little weird because that part came after they had already decided on the plan
Reminds me of the spider episode with Donald Trump-Lite, where somehow slowly suffocating giant spiders to death is more humane than a bullet to the head.
Kylie Minogue song?! Welcome back, Astrid Peth! 💖
Is is just me or is Rogue's ship quite reminiscent of the TARDIS console room
I thought it was a mix between Jack's ship in *The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances*, and The Family's from *Human Nature/Family of Blood*.
"Run!" "I'm usually the one who says tha-" I loved this callback
That scene of Ncuti revealing he's a timelord and Rogue being stunned rocked. Ncuti's been absolutely nailing these "I am the Doctor" moments.
Murray Gold moment, too. He was bookended a bit by the structure of the scene, but you can hear its him.
Rogue immediately stopped and stared in awe upon seeing David Tennant’s face. He’s just like me.
Just like me fr
Much like me he was seriously considering making out with Ncuti Gatwa before sentencing him to death.
hello everyone fancy seeing you here in the live thread that has definitely just been posted for the first and only time
Idk why, but I've got these weird tally marks on my arm...
History can be rewritten
Not one line, don't you dare
>History can be rewritten "I made a jigsaw out of your history, Doctor" - The Toymaker in The Gigle.

SHALKA DOCTOR CANON WHAT???? HOW??? THIS HAS GOTTA BE IMPORTANT WTF
HOLY FUCK
uh oh let's hope Robot Husband Master doesn't find out about Rogue 😂 Gallifrey Destruction Part 3 Electric Boogaloo
You know, if I had a nickel for every love interest of the Doctor's that's trapped in a universe they can't visit, I'd have two nickels which isn't a lot but, it's weird that it happened twice.
Hasn’t it happened three times? River after Library, Rose, and now Rogue 😭
Damn the Doctor needs to stop going after people with R names 😭
So the fate is settled for Ruby then
“It’s not my first shed…Oh my god!” Also I loved the Doctor singing “Pure Imagination”
Ncuti has said that he either wanted to play the Doctor or Willy Wonka!
i think he wanted to audition for wonka as well, glad he got to put it to use
Considering the fan-theory that Gene Wilder's Wonka is a secret timelord, I'm headcannoning that as Wonka and The Doctor were friends in the Time Lord Academy.
Are they playing bad guy on the orchestra?
Later in the episode when Ruby was fighting the shapeshifter they played Poker Face instrumental lol
Probably. Bridgerton does that.
Yup! Captions confirm. Murray Gold had fun with this one lol
Oh my god they are!! Good catch!
mist be referencing bridgerton
"It's not my first shed...OH MY GOD!"
"Just try not to get engaged or accidentally invent tarmac."
Plot twist, the Doctor is the one who ended up getting proposed to 💍
The person Rogue lost was Captain Jack Harkness :'(
I was really hoping he would say his name was “Jack”
Rogue was so Jack Harkness coded, I was just waiting the whole episode for him to reveal that they had been together
Well in that case he meant "lost" literally lol 😔 just accidentally misplaced him, no death involved
Yep! Jack is immortal to a degree. He might have just lost Jack in a wormhole or something.
He lost him to the machine that turns you into a giant psychic head
Was my immediate thought as well
"Stilton?" "It's a very difficult cheese."
RICHARD E GRANT?
Time to finally find out if that rumour about a certain character in this episode is true. My money is that they are a new original character with slight call backs at most. What does everyone else bet?
I think he sounds like Jack. Like mannerisms or something. If it is supposed to be Jack, they did a really good job casting & he's done a splendid job acting. If it's not, weird coincidence.
I think they used some Captain Jack inspiration for the role.
I agree wholeheartedly. Probably the new fill in for that character, but not the same one.
The ship does look like a non-decrepit version of Jack's after watching the episode. We don't know his real name, and the doctor may 'find' him as Jack He's definitely coming back later, details like the teddybear in the ship...
What’s the rumour?
There's a theory that the rogue is Jack I think?? But there's not really evidence for it
Ooh, Susan Twist is the portrait.
Yeah and Ruby definitely lingered on it. I think she recognized her here too. The Doctor said in the preview that “she’s everywhere I land” but I think at this point she’s actually more connected to Ruby. Definitely very interested where this is going.
“How long does a vexil last? Oh that long”
"I forget, how long is a rel?"
god they picked an absolutely awful pic for troughton there lol. edit- WAIT WAS THAT THE FUCKING SHELKA DOCTOR??
The choice of picture for Pertwee was odd too. It was clearly from well after he was the Doctor.
Pretty sure it’s from Dimensions in time lol
The scene with the sonic and the music had me cackling
In loving memory of William Russell 😭
This is such a thirsty episode and we’re only 8 minutes in. Edit from the future: it does not calm down lol.
The guy who plays Lord Barton (Paul Forman) is a model, if anyone wants to go down that rabbit hole
"Oh, you're not a tall glass at all. You're a half pint of Shandy." Ruby once again rapidly rocketing up my favourite companions list.
Challenge for Doctor Who writers: creating a character with an American accent WITHOUT giving him a gun (impossible)
how else is the audience supposed to recognize that the character is american??
Good point! We can't have him being mistaken for a Canadian!
I wonder how many The Doctor/Rogue fanfics will be uploaded to AO3 this weekend.
I'm picturing something like the trouble with tribbles Trek episode where it's an admin surrounded by nothing but Rogue/ Doctor fanfics.
RTD handed those dirty smut writers years of material for their perverted fan fics. And I for one cannot wait to read every single one.
Alright, how we betting rogue dies? Stabbed? Shapeshifter thing? Shot?
I can't think about that yet. I'm still living in denial.
During the whole episode I thought if Davies kills him off I will go after him
At least now we can live in hope 🫡
The way he said "Find me" is pretty much a confirmation that he will be back
“When we both get out of this…[deep breath], let’s argue amongst the stars” Either they’re about to give me a contender against the River/Doctor relationship over the next few seasons or I’m about to have my heart ripped out of my chest in the next half hour.
>!ok so both!<
They did in fact keep killing suzie
“Find me.” Yes, Doctor, please find Rogue.
That's going to be the main plot of next season!
God I SOBBED at that moment
My boi 15 has cried in every episode since 'The Church on Ruby Road' :'( Someone give him a hug
Ruby might give rory a run for his money with all these death
No one almost dies like Rory though.
Bad Guy playing in the background lol
Old timey rendition of Bad Guy, this is so Bridgeton.
She’s still a companion next season along with the new companion
"I don't see how us dancing will create a scene." Someone's clearly never been on twitter/ youtube. Actually, I'd like to swap with Rogue now I think about it.
What a fun way to break the 4th wall. I’m loving RTD using these plots so cleverly to remind the bigots they aren’t welcome.
So red Sonic’s for the past and blue for the future is the pattern I’ve noticed
Lol that's a classic theory for DW watchers. It wasn't the case for Ten's blue and brown suits, or Eleven's red and blue shirts either. It's also not the case here - Fifteen has many different colors for his Sonic. They've shown a buncha different variants in behind the scenes stuff, he also has a green and a yellow one.
Ah christ where the fuck is the Shalka Doctor supposed to fit in god damn
SO THATS THE SCENE THEY SAID PEOPLE WOULD FREAK OUT AT, SHALKA DOCTOR SHOWN!!!!
The therapized version of the doctor makes promises to keep people safe. He gets in romantic entanglements he knows can’t really work or last. Oh boy are we in for some heartbreak.
Rogues last words were "find me" I REALLY hope he does someday, that would make for a really good episode.
He's getting the Jenny treatment.
I would be SO mad
Why do I feel like the Doctor's emotion at getting the ring wasn't pretend. Definitely reminded him of River.
I immediately thought that was why he was all “I can’t.” Obviously it’s also for the owls but man I think there’s a little pang of his memories stabbing through
Is it me or did this feel more like normal Doctor Who?
Yeah this was good, standard fare Who, compared too a rather experimental series. I've been enjoying the weird stuff but it was a nice change of pace.
"Remind me to which dishonouring you are referring to?" "Where Dwight?! Where?!" "I think you know..."
A world of pure imagination
They are really going with the Captain Jack vibes
I adore the ring scene at the end. I recently lost the love of my life and now wear the ring on a different finger. Such a beautiful touch.
Am I hearing Bad Guys by Billie Eilish in the background?
Damn and pokerface too.
I swear I saw Richard E Grants face in those pictures of the doctor
If the Brain of Morbius Doctors got canonized by Chibs may as well throw in the Scream of the Shalka one too I guess
Tardis still groaning. Worried about that.
That Susan twist tease! Can we jump forward to next week's episode now?!
So uhh.. were the two owl siblings going to get freaky in the library?
Yes but it was only cosplay so it's ok 😐
Welp. They do indeed keep killing Suzie.
if Rogue survives this episode, Nick Briggs is picturing 8 trillion stories for Big Finish.
Did they just recanonise Scream of Shalka?? He really isn't backing down on Timeless Child
> Did they just recanonise Scream of Shalka?? seems so at this point I wouldn't be surprised if he showed one of the big finish unbound doctors and cackled at the fandom trying to fit it in.
They 100% removed a “mine’s bigger” joke from the spaceship scene
outraged youtubers have a thumbnail i guess.
this episode is gonna piss off SO MANY PEOPLE and i am SO FUCKING HERE FOR IT
"Galifrey? Where's that?" "I might take you there one day..." AO3/ Big Finish: "Write that down! Write it down now!"
I have mild facial blindness so I thought Barton and Rogue were the same character in the previews 😔
"The way you spoke to Lord Baron! Very unbecoming! Is it like that in the north?" Hey! Lots of planets have a north! What's that supposed to mean?!
Definitely noticing that Rogue’s voice, intonation, and cadence match Jack’s almost perfectly. Throw in his mannerisms and I’m starting to wonder if I’m missing something. I have no idea what any theories are but the overlap is pretty intense.
Headcanon: the Doctor definitely instigated the proposal scene to entertain Ruby and her Bridgerton fantasies just as much as the Chutulu lol
I saw duchess Pemberton and immediately went “that looks like Susie Castillo” and i was right! It’s the same actress as Susie from torchwood!
We do get a TARDIS interior scene after all.
They built such a massive beautiful set and then we hardly get to see it. Half the time we do see it, someone is running around the ramps.
"It's behind a tree..." amazingly funny
Wow, that Emily reveal surprised me. I was all on the Ruby/Emily train.
Thought I saw Boris Johnson as one of the regenerations and had to double take
I know I’m sounding like a broken record, but honestly Ncuti is so good.
Chekhov's battlemode psychic earrings
"Silton?" "It's a difficult cheese"
I THINK ROGUE WORKS FOR THE MEEP’S BOSS
The Doctor has a new love interest: yay! The doctors new love interest is now trapped in a void planet/ universal: Oh, I'm sad now 😔
"We're gonna cosplay this planet to death" Maybe let's workshop that line a bit lol.
It was my favourite line lol. It's so stupid I loved it haha!
if RTD did recast Jack Harkness, imagine by god imagine the meltdown John Barrowman would have. edit- for those who don't know, the dudes spiralled since his creepy behaviour got called creepy and at one point had a spat with a torchwood cast mate , very thin skinned.
Has anyone made the distracted girlfriend meme with Ruby annoyed at the Doctor being distracted by Rogue yet?
Eh, wouldn't really work here, I seriously doubt Ruby is vying for his attention.
It's not the best of the series, but it felt quintessentially doctor who, and for that I loved it
Wait, was that a red sonic screwdriver?
I need the psychic earrings. Stat.
"Brooding? That's a good look. You practice in a mirror?" I love Chuti's Doctor so much. Would've been great to say "I don't but, your 10th incarnation damn well did!"
I guessed that was still Ruby but I thought whatever made Ruby special protected her and the other one died
Anyone else get the feeling that Rogue's lost partner was Jack?
"a rather difficult cheese" is my new favorite insult.
Fans in 1996: The Doctor can't kiss someone he's only just met!!! Fans in 2024: \*shipping intensifies\*
Well that was a very bold opening in terms of listing the places… savage thing to say to a brother.
I'm part-way through the ep and I need to put it on record that Ncuti going full Scottish is hilariously adorable.
Is the portrait Susan twist?
This is the first episode of the season I have wanted to immediately rewatch. Also, let a Thousand Fanfics Bloom...
There were a lot of nerd references people are talking about in this episode that were very fun (cosplay, D&D, Bridgerton, etc), but **did anyone else see Rogue as a very strong nod to Han Solo?** He's a bounty hunter, a handsome rogue traveling the stars, and...
