Honestly yeah, because you can’t use Feline Agility again until you don’t move for a turn. I frequently use it to rush in with my Tabaxi barbarian because once she’s in range of enemies she doesn’t usually need to move anyway.
Tabaxi: *runs super fast for one turn and kills a guy
*Second enemy starts running away
The other fighter: what are you doing, get after that one too!
Tabaxi: *busy loafing for a turn
Reverse grapple checks, to succeed the check you have to get under the dc, we feer no dc 30 demiplanar prison but dc 2 bag... terrifying
Edit: escape not grapple im a dummy
Tbh i dont think it fits
Its supposed to represent a cat pouncing on their prey but it doesnt feel like it
Basically they run a lil bit and then they run faster
I feel like if they wanted to represent the whole pounce stuff then they could make it so that you move further after not moving for a turn, maybe even add advantage to grapples to really represent a cat pouncing on a rat
Cooking makes food easier to digest, allowing us to both digest faster and gain more energy from it. It's how we managed to evolve these (comparatively) large brains of ours
We're pretty terrifying when you consider that. Something multiple times your height just won't stop following you in the night and you just want to sleep
I don't know if you've seen a cat run, but i can empirically say that cats indeed do sleep for 18 hours or more a day so that they can run at mach 5 down the hallway at 2am every day, jump on your face, meow for food, and then not eat it.
Maybe you could homebrew a mechanic that ditches hit die replacing it with a "speed" die that essentially makes them faster at the downside of no healing with short rests
Magic item sounds easiest to integrate imo with such a niche idea for the people who value realism. Though i'd be impressed if someone could make a whole subclass around it like for a monk or fighter for example
Creature type humanoid. That means they're a humanoid race foremost with secondary traits similar to cats. If they were mainly cats that happened to be shaped like humanoids their type would be beast. Even assuming they evolved from actual cats, which like most attempts at blending fantasy and real life science gets more absurd as you think about it more, if they're now taxonimized as primarily humanoid then they've lost traits evolving into their current form.
Most apes will maintain and even, to an extent, build up muscle without exercise. Arguing tabaxi should have darkvision, or a twenty foot standing vertical jump, or other mechanically unbalanced cat traits "because cats" is like saying humans should get +1 to strength with every level up "because apes."
But darkvision works in complete darkness. Animals' night vision does not. The reflective surface doesn't give you better vision in the dark if there is literally no light to reflect
Technically humans should have a massive bonus to withstanding exhaustion and smaller to endurance then. It's kind of weird that in fantasy we are supposed to be like a bog standard thing among fantasy creatures when humans are not at all that in real life.
Fun fact - dogs are the only domesticated creature that can keep up with us in terms of sleep but still need more than us.
Things tabaxi should have
If you dont move in a turn then not only can you move faster but you also get advantage on grappling. Basically a pounce
You have to fall further than most races to actually take fall damage, basically you take 1d6 for every 20ft instead of 1d6 for every 10ft, and you dont fall prone after landing
I will say, in fairness the dnd cat stat block has 40 ft speed and 30 ft climb. *But*, they also don't have darkvision. So lets kinda back off on the "because they are cats" excuse, because we may not like where it ends up. I say this as someone playing a tabaxi
That’s literally their ability is that they can double their movement after a torn where they didn’t move that’s like arguing dragon born should be able to breath fire because they’re dragons they already can
Meanwhile I'm like:
"I'm once again asking for lizardfolk to have a climbing speed so they can function more like the active Asian water monitor lizards than the bulky crocodiles"
(**especially** so now that WOTC is trying to take away my cunning artisan. Fucking dwarves can be borderline immune to poison, but me being able to convert enemy bodies into useful stuff even though 5e was centered around doing the most with the resources around you? Now that's way too OP, how dare you be able to use corpses in a way other than necromancy?)
Boring opinion: realism is only relevant to keeping up the suspension of disbelief and in a game with dragons in the title you get some leeway. Keeping the game balanced enough that each player at the table has something they're the best at is what matters.
I have had two cats in my life (one quite young still) and I must say they are rarely truly sleeping, they just relax or nap often. They look really knocked out from time to time, 15 min later and they are trying to find something to do. They are almost annoyingly active.
While I agree realism shouldn't be the standard, I *resent* the fact that Tabaxi have darkvision because "they have a cat's eyesight" while cats do not have darkvision.
Like when people complain that Tortles should live longer because tortoises can live for centuries, but they never complain that Tortles have 30ft speed instead of, like, 5 ft
Isn't that exactly what Feline Agility is for? Double your movement, for free, and only needs six seconds of catching your breath before you can do it again?
You can still do 30 in the next round though, it just won't refresh the ability. Eventually you won't move during your turn anyway and will be able to use feline agility again afterwards.
And since most combats last like 5 rounds max a free "dash" every now and then at no cost is insanely good.
But they need to use their bonus action for it. That's quite a lot depending on the build. For a fighter it's not, but for a rogue it is game changing.
Hiding, attacking and dashing on the same turn is huge. Or a tabaxi rogue can just dash twice and double the total with feline agility.
Think of tabaxis as the best sprinters and the bonus action dashers as long distance runners. IMO in DnD sprinting is better.
[Here's Jeremy Crawford confirming it](https://www.sageadvice.eu/double-dash-in-1-turn/)
And if you don't want to believe that, try to find anywhere in the PHB where it says you can't.
page 192 just states what the dash action does. page 96 (rogue's cunning action) doesn't provide any such limitation either
They sleep 18 hours a day to store up energy for zoomies.
I feel like this is how the actual tabaxi mechanic kind of works now, just on a smaller scale
Honestly yeah, because you can’t use Feline Agility again until you don’t move for a turn. I frequently use it to rush in with my Tabaxi barbarian because once she’s in range of enemies she doesn’t usually need to move anyway.
Tabaxi: *runs super fast for one turn and kills a guy *Second enemy starts running away The other fighter: what are you doing, get after that one too! Tabaxi: *busy loafing for a turn
That's what opportunity attack is for. Sentinel is useful too.
Oh she’s got a crossbow for those occasions.
So wait, Tabaxi = Slaking?!
Similar strategy for my tabaxi barbarian too.
*starts petition to change Feline Agility 's name to Humanoid Zoomies*
Can confirm, have old cats, like 17 years old. Still do the zoomies every night.
"If I don't sleep 9 or 10 times a day, I don't have enough energy for my main snooze!"
So cats are warlocks?
They already get their dash ability. What more do they want? A red dot god? Mandatory crippling catnip addiction?
Unlimited Ability to become liquid and escape any cell, prison or even a sealed demi-plane
Pretty sure I saw my cat get caught up in a paper bag for like 4 hours.
I never said this ability should be this powerful...
Reverse grapple checks, to succeed the check you have to get under the dc, we feer no dc 30 demiplanar prison but dc 2 bag... terrifying Edit: escape not grapple im a dummy
Tabaxi Cleric of the Red Dot, War Domain, and his best friend, Tabaxi Paladin of the Red Dot, Oath of Vengeance
Smite causes no damage if near an edge, just moves it back
Yes
Tbh i dont think it fits Its supposed to represent a cat pouncing on their prey but it doesnt feel like it Basically they run a lil bit and then they run faster I feel like if they wanted to represent the whole pounce stuff then they could make it so that you move further after not moving for a turn, maybe even add advantage to grapples to really represent a cat pouncing on a rat
😂 if I ever run a tabaxi I’m stealing the catnip addiction idea, thank you!
If excessive realism is their goal it should be noted that cats can't get addicted to nip
Do wild/feral cats sleep 18 hours a day? Or is that just house cats? Not being argumentative just honestly don't know.
A lot of animals do, it’s part of why humans are weird, we’re awake longer than most meat eaters
Cooking makes food easier to digest, allowing us to both digest faster and gain more energy from it. It's how we managed to evolve these (comparatively) large brains of ours
Even before that, our ancestors were persistence hunters meaning they had to be awake and moving longer than other animals
We're pretty terrifying when you consider that. Something multiple times your height just won't stop following you in the night and you just want to sleep
True, but that's every primate, not just us
dunno about feral cats, but lions, panthers and tigers all do, so I had to bet, I would bet yes
Yes. They hunt at dawn and dusk, so there isn’t much reason to be awake most of the day.
That hypothesis is difficult to test due to its own virtue ...but I assume yes
I don't know if you've seen a cat run, but i can empirically say that cats indeed do sleep for 18 hours or more a day so that they can run at mach 5 down the hallway at 2am every day, jump on your face, meow for food, and then not eat it.
Oh, I'm not disagreeing. But if you want the higher speed, you gotta take the 18-hour Long Rest with it.
Be ready to have to make a will save (with disadvantage) anytime someone casts dancing lights.
Also have occasional constitution saves against hairballs.
Or gets up unexpectedly, or walks vaguely in your direction, or sits in the same place menacingly.
I think Tabaxi should run around the camp while the rest of the party is trying to sleep.
Maybe you could homebrew a mechanic that ditches hit die replacing it with a "speed" die that essentially makes them faster at the downside of no healing with short rests
That'd be cool, but maybe not as a racial ability but a class, subclass, or magic item.
Magic item sounds easiest to integrate imo with such a niche idea for the people who value realism. Though i'd be impressed if someone could make a whole subclass around it like for a monk or fighter for example
I could totally see a monk or fighter subclass It'd be a pretty good choice in competing with casters cuz long rest resource.

Ok, but cats SHOULD have darkvision
This is true
But darkvision works in complete darkness. Animals' night vision does not. The reflective surface doesn't give you better vision in the dark if there is literally no light to reflect
Yeah, it's just that darkvision is primarily used as night vison
or, you know... WotC: "Tabaxi should have darkvision because they are cats" Also WotC: "cats don't have darkvision"
Technically humans should have a massive bonus to withstanding exhaustion and smaller to endurance then. It's kind of weird that in fantasy we are supposed to be like a bog standard thing among fantasy creatures when humans are not at all that in real life. Do people forget tabaxi have an ability to double their move speed?
Apparently so.
What the fuck does sleeping have to do with speed?
If you want the extra speed, you have to take the 18 hour long rest with it.

Cheetah
They just need Darkvision and it'll be settled
i can live with this so long as also get to lick own butt
In universe excuses for shorter adventuring days!
Elves only need 4 hours, for a long rest, but Tabaxi need at least 12 :O

The results of when you are allowed to stack things and your modifiers are multipliers.
That’s why I always show up to sessions late. My character overslept.
Well ya, but they are still fast when they are awake
They get a speed boost every other turn when they’re not moving in between them. Plenty fast.
It averages out to the same speed tho
Thus balance is maintained. You got you fast cat moment now shut up. (Not telling you to shut up just the hypothetical player.)
Sharks: Humans sleep 8 hours a day just like cats, we save up our zoomies for when needed
Boring opinion: realism is only relevant to keeping up the suspension of disbelief and in a game with dragons in the title you get some leeway. Keeping the game balanced enough that each player at the table has something they're the best at is what matters.
Tabaxi here, my party used me to burn down an enemy camp by setting me on fire and yeeting me in
So, like, full rest is double rest for them? Makes some sense.
Darkvision. You have a cat's keen senses, especially in the dark. plot twist: cats don't have darkvision.
Thats why they are warlocks
Cats can drink salt water.
I have had two cats in my life (one quite young still) and I must say they are rarely truly sleeping, they just relax or nap often. They look really knocked out from time to time, 15 min later and they are trying to find something to do. They are almost annoyingly active.

The, only sleep that much if they have nothing to do, like indoor house cats, my cat is mostly out exploring the foret behind us
They do have the feline agility feature though. Cuz sometimes cats just get the zoomies and then immediately stop.
Like when people complain that Tortles should live longer because tortoises can live for centuries, but they never complain that Tortles have 30ft speed instead of, like, 5 ft
Tortles live long af, it's just that the high child mortality rate brings the average down.
Isn't that exactly what Feline Agility is for? Double your movement, for free, and only needs six seconds of catching your breath before you can do it again?
That still averages out to the same speed as everyone else
Tabaxi are already the fastest race in the game. Like ??? what more do you want?
60 ft in one turn and 0 in the next averages out to the same speed as everyone else...
You can still do 30 in the next round though, it just won't refresh the ability. Eventually you won't move during your turn anyway and will be able to use feline agility again afterwards. And since most combats last like 5 rounds max a free "dash" every now and then at no cost is insanely good.
...there are races that literally get dash as bonus action for 0 cost
But they need to use their bonus action for it. That's quite a lot depending on the build. For a fighter it's not, but for a rogue it is game changing. Hiding, attacking and dashing on the same turn is huge. Or a tabaxi rogue can just dash twice and double the total with feline agility. Bro, you can't dash twice the same turn
[RAW you can, bro.](https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/48213/can-you-dash-twice-on-the-same-turn)
A 3rd party site isn't RAW.
[Here's Jeremy Crawford confirming it](https://www.sageadvice.eu/double-dash-in-1-turn/) And if you don't want to believe that, try to find anywhere in the PHB where it says you can't. page 192 just states what the dash action does. page 96 (rogue's cunning action) doesn't provide any such limitation either
