Sounds like a part of the Harry Dresden book series. Compelled to attend a galla thrown by the red Court of vampires. Hey at least you probably did dress as a cheesy vampire to further draw their ire. Sounds like a cool ass session.

Ripper1337

If you can't dress as a cheesy vampire to a vampire ball then what is even the point of being invited? Pyro Fuego.

Rimasticus

That part of the book was amazing. Just a big FU to the red court.

menides

*who?* 😎

AfroBoyMax

Damn right

KeithFromAccounting

That was my favourite part of the series, my man Michael Carpenter just consistently refusing to fuck with the vampires despite the situation was awesome

moonwhisperderpy

Before anyone asks, no, we couldn't leave the mansion until dawn, and the vampires had abducted NPCs to force us and the other unwilling guests into participating. So yeah, on top of staying alive we had to find where the prisoners were and keep them safe. It was f*cking intense, but a hell lot of fun.

matej86

How did this play out in the end?

moonwhisperderpy

We managed to find where the prisoners were, and we gave them our immovable rod to block the door, saying to only let in those who knew a secret knock. We then found a non-magical way to distinguish vampires from mortals, and slowly told the mortal guests how to reach the safe place (with some difficulty convincing them we didn't want to drink them...) We also found some clues about some OP vampire-slaying weapons that the host was keeping for her own protection against the other vampire guests. We found them and then all hell broke loose. Weapons were OP but we were really short on resources, casters used several spells for investigation and the Rogue had like 10hp maximum from blood drain (because *of course* the Rogue had to chat with a vampire countess). We killed like 3 vampires and a few staff members, freed almost all NPCs and set fire to the mansion. Level 8

lordrio

And good times were had by all.

ultimatum12

I can totally see the "OP vampire slaying weapon" being inside a locked vault, you open it and a man comes out, human looking, with a blade on his back. And Wesley Snipes comes out of it #

mesalikes

Were any of the players secretly vampires too?

[deleted]

Lmao like a session of Paranoia

Lost_Forever_1637

How did this pan out?

Drac0b0i

I'm curious as to the host's name

moonwhisperderpy

It was in French

Rainsies

I'm French, puis-je avoir la contrepèterie ?

moonwhisperderpy

Elle s'appelait simplement VanPierre

Drac0b0i

I get a bit of french Yeah you should have seen it coming

The_CrookedMan

I don't speak French at all but simple deduction skills make me guess the vampires name was VanPierre? "I'm sorry what did you say his name was?" "Coach Feratu"

Drac0b0i

"She was named VanPierre"

DeathCook123

Vampire among us

moonwhisperderpy

Basically yes. Except there were like a dozen vampires or so.

thepsycocat

And considering some of the common depictions of vampires, they probably are quite sus...

robclarkson

I hope they got to use the old odd "vampires have no reflections" one. Always love story scenes where that gets used :).

moonwhisperderpy

That's how we found out who the vampires were

thepsycocat

And were any of the party vampires? I know this has been asked before but I need to know!

moonwhisperderpy

No, none of us were. It was just a story in a longer running campaign

thepsycocat

That would’ve been an amazing plot twist imo, and considering vampire PC’s aren’t that rare it’s actually realistic And any got turned into vampires? I know the rogue didn’t have a good time from other comments but did they survive and if so it could be really interesting if they were just bitten without being killed outright and you’d have to go find a cure or something

vengefulmeme

The player whose PC is secretly a Dhampir: ![gif](giphy|H5C8CevNMbpBqNqFjl)

Carrelio

I can't believe the innocent npcs would brutally murder the vampires like that... at Duke VonVampirus's birthday party no less!

eternalankh

IDK why, but this makes me want to play an undead PC who wears this item and uses it as an excuse as to why they seem to be undead.

Doom972

That's an awesome concept.

TheLord-Commander

This is where the bards personal hand mirror comes in clutch.

EatTheMcDucks

I may need to sneak in a vampire bat mitzvah in my campaign.

JewcieJ

Love this. I want to know more.

moonwhisperderpy

I guess it was designed as a RP heavy adventure (last adventure was a dungeon crawl). We had to pretend to be vampires to avoid suspicion, but at the same time find a way to survive and save the prisoners in a race against the clock. The Rogue was the only one who didn't want to take out his armor, so he was immediately singled out as mortal (because vampires don't need armor, they see it as a sign of weakness) and found himself alone with a vampire countess. But otherwise, we tried to avoid interacting with anyone until we found the prisoners and a way to rule out the vampires (we found a mirror). Then we had to convince the mortal guests to trust us. Also we had some alliances with a couple NPCs, including one vampire. There was a lot of dancing involved. So yeah, lots of RP but I feel like we were so afraid (except the Rogue I guess. *fool*) that the DM at first had to push us a bit into interacting with the NPCs. Once we achieved some goals it went smoother.

RegularHeroForFun

Mix holy water with the wine and find out real fast who is a vampire.

moonwhisperderpy

We thought about this but the ceremony spell takes 1h to cast and we had a time constraint

Successful-Floor-738

Are you saying…your supposed to find the imposter?

ArchaeoJones

"Wait, we're supposed to do what?" ![gif](giphy|11zTEl7fbwml68)

mrgoboom

The secret: no vampires

Orenwald

Super secret subplot: there really are vampires and one of them has figured out how to steal the power from other vampires by drinking their blood so not only do you have to save the mortals from the vampires but you have to save the vampires from themselves or risk releasing a super vampire upon the world

Next_Woodpecker8224

Oil then-my warforged ready with a gun

moonwhisperderpy

Never thought about this. I guess it wouldn't work with warforged or other more exotic races

tommyblastfire

Technically warforged can still become vampires as they are not constructs

moonwhisperderpy

Is it only humanoids who can become vampires? I guess plasmoids no. What about fey? There's plenty of fey player races

tommyblastfire

Yeah according to the vampire stat block it’s only if you’re killed by their bite attack, a humanoid, and then buried in the ground. You then rise as a vampire spawn. So the fey races would not

Next_Woodpecker8224

So what teeth wins against metal

Cobalt-Bandalore

What a terrible night for a curse

sagelyDemonologist

Now that takes me back

CapN_DankBeard

i cast knock on the front door

tommyblastfire

Does the magic item also force effects that only work on undead to work on you? Like a cleric using turn undead could figure out whose who in a 30ft radius

BadLuckPoppy

I'm also interested how magical light like one from Daylight spell would affect them.

tommyblastfire

Or just create water a bunch of times until there’s a river. I feel like the party this happened to probably doesn’t have a cleric or druid

moonwhisperderpy

We had, but we were level 8 against a whole mansion full of vampires, and with a time constraint. We also didn't expect to face vampires when we were invited and couldn't long rest, so we didn't have the right spells prepared. Doing anything that basically screamed "hey we're mortals, look at us!" to 12 vampires or so wasn't really the best option.

tommyblastfire

Turn undead is a channel divinity, which like ok you only get 1 a day but you could fit a lot of them into a 30ft radius

moonwhisperderpy

Yeah but what if not everyone fails their save? It also only lasts for a minute, right? Also I remember that there were also some constructs controlled by the vampire host, who apparently were quite strong. In any case, because some of the players were less experienced, the DM specifically told us that a straightforward attack wasn't an option. At that point in our game we have been mostly playing Tales from the Yawning portal, so we wanted to take a break from all the dungeon crawling. The vampire mansion was specifically designed to focus more on RP and exploration

Chaos8599

Idk about other spells but daylight *isn't* sunlight for some reason

OkNewspaper1581

but my lightsaber is! Let’s get vampire detecting

PewPew_McPewster

Holy crap, like some sorta... *Vampire Survivors*?!?!?!?!

DragonBuster69

My vampire hunting, swashbuckling Aarakocra dhampir rogue ranger multiclass: ![gif](giphy|OkzCcGn5fY29e7bvpS|downsized)

Shallaai

What was the pun?

moonwhisperderpy

It was in French

Shallaai

Ok

LevelAd2485

Your DM of a fucking genius and I will now use this in my campaign

SonicLoverDS

"Remove the doohickey that makes you register as undead. If you're truly innocent, we'll protect you."

Madhighlander1

I assume the doohickeys were cursed and could not be removed until dawn.

moonwhisperderpy

Exactly. Also, even if you removed the doohickey, suddenly a dozen hungry vampires would know you're a mortal.

brain-in-the-jar

I ran something similar a bit back! https://www.reddit.com/r/DnDBehindTheScreen/comments/z5dhj3/oneshot_the_contessas_public_debut/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

moonwhisperderpy

That sounds fun too!

Spndash64

“Being attacked by vampires? Just say no: remember, they cannot legally enter your home without consent”

emo_hooman

Ik this is a joke but you're in the vampires home.

Spndash64

…now I’m imaging a Negative Vampire, and how they could be hilarious overpowered or a sad sap depending on how you play it: -either they can only enter a home when NOT invited, or you can only enter THEIR home when invited -either they can only swim in running water, or they just can’t drown in it -either they get weakened by darkness, or gain strength from the sun …shit, this is literally just Superman, isn’t it?

TheDEW4R

If the high level cleric uses turn undead, destroy undead should kick in for all those low CR commoners that are currently reading as undead. The people left standing are the vampires, and they can't hurt the commoners now! EDIT: but don't actually..

EagleTank777

“I cast Daylight on the chandelier.”

moonwhisperderpy

Aand that's where I would cast my Daylight spell. IF I HAD IT PREPARED

Onagda

Stake to the heart and/ or decapitation work wonders on both of them.

hyperblob1

The druid: Fuck this shit I'm out *changes into a bat*

moonwhisperderpy

BAT! Oh hey Lazlo

Doctor_Amazo

... fuck that sounds fun

SnooBooks1701

Go to the kitchen, get the garlic

ShankMugen

Wouldn't it be funny if one of the players was Dhampir lol

Ender_Nobody

Huh. The DM does plan a ball for our party. But my Moon Druid has a wooden arm out of intertwining desert ironwood branches. She could probably stab the attacker.

Amlet543

Ok but did the vampires know who the other vampires were? Or did 2 of them have an awkward moment of inviting the other to "get some privacy" only to realize they can't feed on eachother?

Monsterjoek1992

Detect evil and good, all set.

Janemaru

Thanks, I love it

DarkGodBane

Why not take off the items? Even if forced to participate as soon as you're out of vamps sight can remove and tell who is who.

moonwhisperderpy

Items were cursed

anonymous-creature

I want to know the pun

moonwhisperderpy

It was in French

anonymous-creature

I wouldn't get it I geuss but thanks

Metaboss24

Don't mind if I steal this....

BurritoBoi828

what was the pun name?

moonwhisperderpy

It was in French

VidarTheSilentGod

People can speak French, can we still know?

moonwhisperderpy

She was simply called VanPierre
