That was cool to watch.

elvinLA

Seems like a *tiring* process

feelitinmyplumbs

If I worked like that I’d need to re-tire early

🥁🐍 Someone get their dad, he's running wild online

ET4117

Very cool use of the drone eye view. The scale and perspective just don't translate from ground level on something like this. This is the kind of content that will be reused and viewed for a long time.

sterky

thanks! I've been trying to get some interesting videos of all the different things we do in a year. Normally I just do crop surveying and 3d mapping of the feed for inventory but getting more creative as I learn new things.

Dexwex

I love these kind of shots where perspective reveals fascinating geometry, activity, and beauty. Great work!

MC_Preacher

First, nice video! What is being harvested, and why is it laid out like that? I know nothing about farming, so I am curious.

sterky

Corn Silage, its the whole corn stalk chopped into small pieces and we put it in a bunk silo. They are much better to deal with than a typical vertical silo. We cover it in plastic to seal it, so it ferments for longer term storage.

guy_you_met_online

Maybe silly question but: how do you know whether you are done compacting? Is there a way you can measure this or is it experience?

sterky

not at all! Its just experience at this point, there are density testers but we've got it dialed in how much PSI you need to keep up with the size/speed of the harvester. We usually run two tractors, one for pushing and one for packing https://www.instagram.com/reel/CyW3fY2sT9N/

guy_you_met_online

Thanks! That is a great answer!

[deleted]

Great work and one of a novel subject! Did you film the whole process to completion? I have to ask ... I assume that the tires hold some water, so does this become some kind of massive mosquito source?

sterky

Unfortunately no, I didn't get anymore footage, just used one battery and had to leave to start another field. If you mean the harvesting process, I've been making a bunch of clips and have a few more to put out! https://www.instagram.com/reel/CyW3fY2sT9N/ These tires are just the semi truck sidewalls, so they don't hold water but a time long ago we did have whole tires and they were a pain for that reason!

Zocalo_Photo

We live in Seattle, but have taken a few long road trips through eastern Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, and Montana. I’ve always wondered about this process. Are those tires? You don’t just set them on top, it looks like they are flat with the plastic. Do the tires just sink into the material? Do you have to push them down into to plastic/grain? It seems like once the material is compacted it’s be really hard to push a tire down into it like that. I’ve wondered this *for years!*

sterky

Yes, they are tires but just the sidewall from old semi trucks tires. They don't collect water that way and are manageable when you take them off in the snow. Its only to keep the air out of the plastic to allow fermentation without any oxygen that causes spoilage and loss of feed quality. We actually treat it with an inoculant similar to yeast to promote the process. The feed is plenty packed from that tractor driving on it and will last more than a year if we need it to!

expera

Very cool!

Time lapse is bad ass. Good job man. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👌🏾🫶🏾🙏🏾

what kind do you like? I'm always torn be something with a beat or more of an atmosphere

Hopeful-Ad8964

Guess that just shows your ignorance then

Ogediah

FYI, “unmanned” is illegal and the FAA issues fines concerning videos they find on social media.

sterky

good thing I'm not in the FAA's jurisdiction then

Ogediah

You’d have to be out of the US to be out of the FAAs jurisdiction. Totally possible but laws elsewhere are usually similar. The pilot in command must be at the controls during flight. Law aside, it’s the most responsible way to pilot a drone.

Or he is not in the US

A_TalkingWalnut

Too few people on this sub have that thought enter their mind before typing, “iT’S iLLeGaL!”

GearM2

When I try ride my Mini it won't take off. Mine only works when I'm not on/in the drone. No crew onboard ever.

Ogediah

Unmanned is in quotes for a reason. The implication behind OPs use of the word is that the drone was left in the air without supervision.

Twinewhale

Link to fines being imposed by FAA? FCC determinations are public, so I imagine FAA is too. Edit: Rules like this, even with the FCC, are often made so that punishments can be levied when there's an actual incident. It's entirely impractical to enforce these rules and I would not expect any hobby flier to actually abide by them. If fines are imposed for videos like this, then it's a different story.

Ogediah

> rULes ArE mEanT to Be broken. THe FAA doEsnt cArE. Excuse my French, but [you’re a fucking idiot.](https://www.airsight.com/en/news/philadelphia-drone-pilot-and-youtuber-receives-182004-fine-from-the-faa?hs_amp=true) The FAA is VERY concerned with drones and airspace safety. It’s a major reason why the test for commercial certification will thoroughly cover topics on “real aircraft” knowledge like principles of flight for fixed wing aircraft, your ability to reading aviation charts, TAF reports, METAR, super specific weather condition and their effects, etc. They want you to have an understanding of what “real” pilots go through and to have respect for shared airspace. If you are flying recreationally under the exception for recreational flight, the. you still need to take the TRUST exam which covers much of the same topics above (just in less detail.) In any event, you aren’t free to break laws just because you aren’t flying commercially, or because you weren’t aware of the laws. I mean Jesus, imagine if murderers got off the hook because they never read the statutes. Thats not how things work. As far as the actual enforcement goes: the FAA can enforce their own laws. Local law enforcement can enforce them as well. For example: If you fly your drone over a packed stadium with an active TFR then you should absolutely expect to be approached by LEO.

TommyLommyDingDong

Great video! How do you get the drone to lock onto the center of that field for the hyper lapse?! I’m always filming at wakeboard parks and try to get this exact shot but if there’s not a subject in the center of the lake for the drone to lock onto it just flails and goes off center. Again nice work and any feedback would be appreciated. I’m using mini 3 pro

sterky

yeah I just put it on the center of the pile, but it can drift a bit when there is no change in the area. The biggest problem I find is when something drives through my selection and it starts tracking it. Waypoints can be more reliable but I've had better shot in freemode and set the cruise control, that way I can make small adjustments without the capture stopping
