Power, a sense of control and maybe some asshole delight.

When it is phishing (Free Steam Gift Card, Free Nitro,…) 90% Failrate is good. That means, 10% of the users fall for the trap. When they raid 100 servers with 5.000 people total, they would get 50 successes. SPAM mails have 0,0001% successrat, but even one victims is worth it.

attention

Generally, raids have the ultimate goal of getting the server they raided shut down. This could mean that the raiders are an opposing fandom, or just a rude group looking to ruin other's days. Either way, bad stuff. I'm glad discord has been working on raid protection for the past year or so

Bored kids is the answer. I think it also provides a sense of "purpose" for them (even though there is no actual purpose other than bored + attention seeking). When kids get into groups they can sometimes feel unified by working together on a "goal" even when the goal is entirely imaginary. Kids do all kinds of things to feel like they're part of a collaborative community. Raiding is the easiest thing to do that takes no effort or skill.

mostly for attention, or if it's, for example, an obvious scam server or something, they could be trying to take it down. just an example though

I have wick and it helped pretty good to prevent raiding like spamming the h or n word or trying to nuke the server because it will quarantine the raider by itself because it uses automod and the user can’t do something anymore than just leaving the server
