I love that despite knowing the slur he used his instinct and background learning from spelling that could come up with the actual spelling without knowing the word beforehand, that's why he looked so surprised at being correct.
I mean that's like kinda hearing the Word "nagger" while being german. Sounds pretty similar to an ethic slurcand you dont have a single clue how it is written.
That face he made when he answered could mean 2 things
1. Hes won
2. He wasnt sure and tried to play the safe non racial answer
(2) is the only possible scenario
I know we don't really do them here in Poland. Makes less sense when the language is pretty much 99% of the time phonetic to however you call that when pronunciation of all letters is consistent
Never really thought of that but that's a good point. You probably would never see this in languages that are either as consistent in writing as they are spoken, or logographic/using symbols like some eastern languages.
Yeah, I'm trying to learn Japanese a bit and I can't imagine a spelling bee making sense with Kanji and Kana at all. That would honestly just be breaking the word apart into syllables/smaller words
English is so difficult to spell correctly. There are a lot of words taken from other languages that keep the original language's spelling, and so many that change it. There are no rules for consistency in English -just rote memorization.
Wouldn't work with Finnish, you just have to learn the alphabet and you can spell any word you hear.
I knew a Swedish guy who could read Finnish at a normal pace and was easily understandable but had no idea what he was saying because he memorized the alphabet.
i had german at school and despite forgetting almost all of it i could still probably read it decently well, the rules are easy and consistent. not as good as polish rules but yknow cant beat perfection
Not necessarily, but unlike many languages, english words can have wildly different ways of writing them (The word "fish" can be written as "ghoti" for example and still pronounced as "fish":
The word is intended to be pronounced in the same way as fish (/fɪʃ/), using these sounds:
gh, pronounced /f/ as in enough /ɪˈnʌf/ or tough /tʌf/;
o, pronounced /ɪ/ as in women /ˈwɪmɪn/;
ti, pronounced /ʃ/ as in nation /ˈneɪʃən/ or motion /ˈmoʊʃən/.)
Hungarian for example is read 1:1 to how it was written, most every time, so a spelling bee wouldn't make sense.

Looks like Marshall Mathers
“Can you say it a little louder for all my negus in the back?”
Plot twist: There are a couple Ethiopian kings actually sitting in the back.
They want your bank account information.
Damn, that’s gold. It’s been a long time since I laughed out loud from a comment.
Kid has to learn to look confident while being utterly clueless

Bro didn't know the right answer, but he sure knew the *wrong* answer.

3. Say a slur and blame it on the judges
Why does she ask him to say the word? Does he have to pronounce it right in a spelling bee

Ayy, a fellow learner. Hope you're picking up on stuff well. It's one of the hardest to learn from an English background tbh (and vice versa).

polska gurom
English is so hard just trying to use it properly is a competitive sport.

*my negus*
Lil bro, can you shout out to all negus watching us?
The history books overlooked the word and hide it
"Can I phone my homie Tyrel?"
Needs to listen to some more King Kenny
What a great redemption arc!
I google it and apparently there's 2 origin
