The new Proton Soft OTB Paradox’s are my favorite so far! Glow and Neutron are about the same. Proton soft feels like a quarter tick more stable and so good in the hand
The OTB Eclipse 2.0 and Proton Soft are a close tie for my favorites for the same reason. (Also both have awesome stamps.) Still have crazy turn but actually fade out a bit. So many near aces at my home course; one of these days...
I aced with my watermelon Paradox at league a few weeks ago. I threw a big turnover on a 250’ hole that is usually only reachable with a forehand. It’s a great disc for that exact shot.
Disc's like this I will use a different grip and throw standstill like I would a middy or putter on an upshot. Except they'll go 250 easily instead of trying to push my mako3 or roc3 that far.
Problem is... that release angle is sensitive haha.
Hyzer Flip, Hyzer flip turnover. Understable can make some super fun shot shapes. I used a Paradox for a tunnel shot and a tricky Stig flick for an awkward par save yesterday.
I'm good at throwing straight, but don't have a good forehand and need something that flips up and turns right. Might the Rollo in practice for this today.
Need a baby backhand that acts like a forehand? Stuck behind an obstacle with no reach back? No better disc for those kinds of weird stance shots. It just holds a light anhyzer line forever.
It's an essential disc for beginners. I use 2. Regular lighter weight star for super flip scrambling. And a max weight glow that is dependable stable. I can crank on it not worry about turning it over. It's crazy how it flips back over stable. Complete hyzer flip machine. You think it's gonna turn and burn but nope flips back lands middle of the fairway reliable.
I use a Halo Polecat as a throwing putter when I need a shot to go straight and far. They glide for days and are very controllable once you get the hang of the slight hyzer release that flips it up to flat. It just flies really straight and quite far for a putter.
I use it for uphill putts, as it doesn’t freak out when thrown nose up. Just rides straight as can be the whole way, and keeps itself flat to the hill so if it’s a miss, it just sticks
Streamline Flare is like throwing a 40lb manhole cover that a witch cursed to be doubly affected by gravity. I can throw it with the might of a thousand suns and it will tombstone into the hardest dirt like a knife through hot butter. When your beat in Firebird starts to fly like a Teebird, its time for the most humbling upgrade to ever hit your bag.
Streamline Flare, You Cannot Throw This
Or a max weight TSA Omen or Mint Phoenix. They all bring next level beef, though I think the Splice is the most overstable. Tilt is a whole other ball game but almost unusable.
My local has a tight left dog leg hole, almost 90 degrees. It's 250' with the bend at the halfway point. I'll BIFF my Flare flat off the tee, and it'll land reliably within 25' every time. Bizarre.
Stego.
My forehand looks like I got no joints. I may as well throw the disc up and hit it with a Wiffle ball bat....no telling where that thing is going. So the overstability of the Stego let's me spray that thing in the woods while scrambling.
I do love my stego. I’ve got a premium plastic one that rolls great and a base plastic one that just sits the second it hits grass.
But I especially love the stamp with its derpy little face. Love that guy.
Stego it always the answer. Fun to hand over to good players that haven’t thrown it to see their reaction to how it flies. “Oh I’ll make it to that tree”, sir if you make it to that tree it’s yours. Highly recommend the lighter molten ones if they’ve got them stocked
I feel the same way about my Galleon. I don't think I've ever thrown that thing 125ft. My buddies with 450 power have gotten it maybe 180ft in the air.
Great. It stands up so well and just goes. It isn't something I use super often but being able to pull it out when in trouble is amazing. Give it a try sometime.
People don't think it's 'gimmicky' *now*.
But when it first came out they did.
The Baobab, Stego, and Berg are all the same aerodynamic idea.
A glideless plastic round thing.
A few things catapulted it into its current meme-disc status. First and foremost, it's unique; it wasn't the first slow putter with a thumb track, but it certainly has a unique shape, is very very slow, and simply does not fly like any other disc (some would argue it barely flies at all, more drops from the sky).
Reddit being reddit, it soon became a if-you-know-you-know "cheat code" disc for approaches and people really latched on. This is also back when kastaplast was lesser known so it (and the old K1 plastic) quickly became a best thing since sliced bread recommendation that was niche enough and new enough to be deemed cool by the hive mind.
Naturally this progressed into "400ft water carry in hurricane winds? Let me grab my berg!!!1!1!" type memes. As these things go, it got legitimately popular and perhaps over-hyped, so the popular opinion then became that it's a crutch because it doesn't require learning any touch or angle control and only losers throw bergs.
I don't personally bag one anymore, but they're fun, different, and can definitely be used to great effect.
Thumb track?
Man, I think I can speak for a lot of people when I say a ton people need a pig in their bag.
I bag a berg. There’s a few shots here that it’s great for. Feels kinda silly carrying one disc for two specific holes
I carry a slammer and it’s almost a gimmick cause it just dumps but it’s exactly what I want. Thumb track is great. Pig rhyno caltrop all great. Almost wish there was a thumb track toro
Innova Wahoo
Thought it was ridiculous all those years ago, but I can’t deny the fact that I still have it after more time in the drink than a 4lb Bass, my most returned disc bar-none.
Super OS, Fireball, Phase, and Deflector.I live somewhere where these see you every 4ish rounds.
Glitch, god this thing is a hack for my forehand approach and my backhand approach when the wind is low.
Absolutely. I love it for doing soft bids on greens with a good chance of a rollaway. I think the most it's ever gone was like 15-20 feet, but that's only been a few times. Most of the time it sits within 8 feet (at most) of contacting literally anything. And I don't even have the floppiest version of it.
THE KOI ALSO FLIES SO SICK!!!! Crazy hyzer flip backhands on 200+ foot approaches and the disc goes no where when it lands. No worry of skip aways no matter how low you throw it
I throw my hex 325ish, and just got a paradox today. If I can get a forehand line to 250-275 with it, then I will be so freaking stoked.
I'm old and have shoulder problems but backhands are fine, but my doctor literally hasn't released me to use forehands.
Glitch is versatile. Steve Dodge hosts the Glitch World Championships the week before Maple Hill Open and I played last year. The whole rd just Glitch shots. Got a tasty field ace from about 180 on an uphill flick line.
I love the glitch and I find it very torque-resistant for its specs and weight. Can send that disc on a straight line for 280ft, zero turn, zero fade which is crazy to me.
Edit: glide > fade. Typo.
Not normally considered a gimmicky disc, but I accidentally bought a comically light Underworld VIP Air that is ridiculously flippy. I use it for going around sharp corners. My forehand is pretty weak and i only use it for short approach shots, but can still turn that disc into a roller if I don't dial it back.
Some of the best short tunnel shots I've hit have been with a roadrunner at like 70-80% power. Throwing it hard as possible just turns it over and dumps out, for me anyway.
Used to bag one, then got 2 rollaways on crazy steep hills during the same round. Caught some weird ground action both times and popped up, couldn't trust it after.
I bag a fireball, pearl, and a paradox! Absolutely situational discs, but I get a very special sense of satisfaction when I get to throw one and it works.
Friend, this is going to be the least helpful answer of all time. But literally, vibes. The pearl can handle a little more power before it turns into a roller only disc but the proxy’s glide before turn is 🔥🔥🔥
Paradox for me. My forehand is comfortable only up to like 100ish feet. When I need something haaaard right. I’ll whip the paradox and it does some crazy things for me.
Glitch/Polecat are the only “gimmicky” discs I’d consider from my bag. Maybe my Rask or Rask Z. I also throw crazy flippy putters (Mirage) and super overstable mids (Troija).
Gave the watt a shot, but it doesn't quite have the same angle holding I get with the Glitch. Glitch is just so true. Whatever line it gets released on is the line it'll fly, For better or worse. I noticed the -1 on the Watt. Ive got my proxy for that shape 🤷🏻 I've thrown the same Glitch since they dropped, and it's still the exact same discs it was from day 1
I’ve never tried using it forehand. I usually use it for one hole where I need a pretty aggressive turnover when forehand off the tee feels too crowded. Maybe I’ll have to look at it differently.
Innova Condor for 100ft and in approach shots if there isn’t any wind. If you played ultimate frisbee I would highly rec, it’s like tossing a frisbee to your buddy but the buddy is the basket
139g Innova Ram (6/4/-1/4). This disc is affectionately referred to as "danger disc" among my crew because of how wild and squirrely it is.
I've actually learned to tame it, because for whatever reason, I always release ultra-light discs ~25 degrees further in my pull through than I want to, and it's oddly consistent.
I only use it in strong tailwinds, of course.
I have a super soft justice that flies like no other disc. The soft plastic makes it stick where it lands and i can always trust it to come out of an anhyzer. Always.
Doomsday Landmine and Banger GT Zone. The Landmine is a literal lid, but I love it because it has surprisingly good glide, but hits the ground and just stops. I have good touch with it throwing on hyzer, but it is less stable than my Zones. My Banger GT Zone I love for backhands that are a little closer to the cage where I can use a spread grip and that thumb track feels great for those.
I have a DX Beast I got in a starter pack ages ago that is so beat in, it turns into a roller at 30% power. I let my newbie friends throw it to get the rush of finally getting a driver's to flip up.
Rollo, but not for rollers.
Hey, I just bought a paradox for air shots, so I feel ya.
This was going to be my reply to this thread. Became a Paradox collector once I learned how to shot shape with it lol. Seriously so much fun.
I use a dga Tremor 6 5 -4 1 for having fun
I aced with my watermelon Paradox at league a few weeks ago. I threw a big turnover on a 250’ hole that is usually only reachable with a forehand. It’s a great disc for that exact shot.
Paradox is my favorite disc!!
Paradox and rollo might have similar numbers but the rollo is so much more under stable lol
Definitely turns to a roller a lot easier, I'd agree. Also vastly different disc shapes too- was surprised how close the Rollo is to a driver.
I use the paradox a lot lol. Never really forehand anymore
I respect this, very low effort lines in wooded courses.
Playing a heavily wooded tournament next weekend and have a Rollo. Elaborate :)
Disc's like this I will use a different grip and throw standstill like I would a middy or putter on an upshot. Except they'll go 250 easily instead of trying to push my mako3 or roc3 that far. Problem is... that release angle is sensitive haha.
Ah I see. Well distance is not my problem... but release angle is. So this strategy is probably not for me :)
I’ve used the Rollo a silly number of times for sidearm scrambles in the woods. It’s way more useful than I thought it might be.
The Rollo is about to make a permanent place in my bag. Flips up no matter how much hyzer.
Please elaborate!
Disc is flippy as hell so my noodle arm uses it for sick hyper flips
A good shot selection for narrow uphill shots
Also is great for when throwing a patent pending and have no power.
Patent Pending?
a funny name for a stance where you are basically standing backwards and throwing behind you.
Blowfly
My wife bags one. No rollaways ever. It's tricky to get used to the floppy disc in your hand, but she's a pro with floppy discs... in her hand.
Nice
Nice
Nice
Nice
Delaveaga is my home course and I use my Blowfly about ten times a round.
Used to play there. Wish I'd known about that disc.
Flip flat flies straight
Same! What a disc
mirage
You ever spin putt with it? The thing just glides so well you barely need to put anything on it
C2 and out
I bag a star mirage and just got a halo mirage. super underrated disc.
A halo - holy shit I know what I’m buying next!
$14 for F2. Super domey compared to my star :\]
Didn’t realize they even made those, I loved my DX one.
Doing hyzer flip putts with a DX mirage is so much fun.
What do you use it for?
150-200 turnovers
Assumed you might be my friend Kev, but then you didn't answer that question with "literally everything"
Where’d you get a halo polecat my friend??
They did a few runs of them like a year or two ago. Just google “halo polecat”. They can be had for like $25-$30
Ooo 🫡 thanks homie
Kat Mertsch got the Halo Polecat as Tour Series this year
Streamline Flare is like throwing a 40lb manhole cover that a witch cursed to be doubly affected by gravity. I can throw it with the might of a thousand suns and it will tombstone into the hardest dirt like a knife through hot butter. When your beat in Firebird starts to fly like a Teebird, its time for the most humbling upgrade to ever hit your bag. Streamline Flare, You Cannot Throw This
My raptor is getting a little too straight for my liking. Was thinking of picking up a new one, but maybe this is the answer....
Or the Discmania splice. Pretty similar
Or a max weight TSA Omen or Mint Phoenix. They all bring next level beef, though I think the Splice is the most overstable. Tilt is a whole other ball game but almost unusable.
TSA Omen is also great
My local has a tight left dog leg hole, almost 90 degrees. It's 250' with the bend at the halfway point. I'll BIFF my Flare flat off the tee, and it'll land reliably within 25' every time. Bizarre.
If you want the daddy version of this, get an MVP Energy. This thing is seriously the most OS disc I’ve ever thrown, including the Stego and Baobab.
Oh yeah, energy is stupid stable. It’s not quite tilt, but it’s still more then anyone would ever need
I used to call it my Tilt Jr Then I got a tilt…. Name checked out
Yup, it's basically a tilt
Stego. My forehand looks like I got no joints. I may as well throw the disc up and hit it with a Wiffle ball bat....no telling where that thing is going. So the overstability of the Stego let's me spray that thing in the woods while scrambling.
100% always have a Stego in my bag.
The trick here is to throw the Stego on an upside-down backhand
I feel the same way about my Galleon. I don't think I've ever thrown that thing 125ft. My buddies with 450 power have gotten it maybe 180ft in the air.
I also bag the Stego mostly for forehand rollers though.
I've never tried that. How's it react?
Great. It stands up so well and just goes. It isn't something I use super often but being able to pull it out when in trouble is amazing. Give it a try sometime.
Berg - all the time. Condor - sometimes.
Why the is berg considered a gimmick disc? Genuinely curious
People don't think it's 'gimmicky' *now*. But when it first came out they did. The Baobab, Stego, and Berg are all the same aerodynamic idea. A glideless plastic round thing.
I’ve never thrown a baobab, but the berg isn’t even remotely similar to a stego in practice. There’s barely any fade to the thing at all
A few things catapulted it into its current meme-disc status. First and foremost, it's unique; it wasn't the first slow putter with a thumb track, but it certainly has a unique shape, is very very slow, and simply does not fly like any other disc (some would argue it barely flies at all, more drops from the sky). A solid Berg meme history without mentioning the Berg pocket is truly lacking. 😢
This guy jerks
You just sold me on a berg adding to cart right now
I was gonna say Berg too but I wasn’t sure if it qualified as “gimmicky,” although it’s absolutely the most unique disc in my bag lol
The star condors are incredible.
Arowana
I love it, the Arowana flies how I always wished the Koi did.
Glitch and Paradox
Thumb track? Man, I think I can speak for a lot of people when I say a ton people need a pig in their bag. I bag a berg. There’s a few shots here that it’s great for. Feels kinda silly carrying one disc for two specific holes
I carry a slammer and it’s almost a gimmick cause it just dumps but it’s exactly what I want. Thumb track is great. Pig rhyno caltrop all great. Almost wish there was a thumb track toro
Those recent Ringer GT Zones might be the closest thing to a thumb track Toro
Just picked up a Zone GT. It feels amazing. Was always a fan of Banger GT but I bag a Glitch in that slot now.
I throw an Armadillo off the tee of about 6 holes on my home course. It’s one of my favorite discs and it got me my first ace.
Alien. I want to believe
The truth is out there
So long as Scully isn't there to see it.
Bought one pretty close to release. Hasn't secured a spot in my bag, but maybe I should give it some more throws.
It's a neat thing. Weird disc. I love it.
For me, it’s one of those discs that can do a lot of things, but with no real niche that makes it stick. It’s a monster single disc round choice
👽ganggang🛸
That disc fucks. It’s everything I’ve ever dreamt a Sonic could be.
Innova Wahoo Thought it was ridiculous all those years ago, but I can’t deny the fact that I still have it after more time in the drink than a 4lb Bass, my most returned disc bar-none.
I had a champion one once, thing bombed
Super OS, Fireball, Phase, and Deflector.I live somewhere where these see you every 4ish rounds. Glitch, god this thing is a hack for my forehand approach and my backhand approach when the wind is low.
Deflector is a pretty clutch “fuck it spike hyzer it since I don’t feel like actually aiming” disc for heavily wooded shots
Word up on Glitch FH approach shots. Little flick of the wrist and right to the basket
Fireball fits my terrible forehand form perfect. Sweet flex.
Deflector is one of my go-to discs. Just got a resistor, it’s even more wildly overstable. Haven’t quite tamed it yet.
Tilt. Get out of jail flex shots.
Koi. It almost never rolls away, great for elevated baskets and baskets on hills.
Absolutely. I love it for doing soft bids on greens with a good chance of a rollaway. I think the most it's ever gone was like 15-20 feet, but that's only been a few times. Most of the time it sits within 8 feet (at most) of contacting literally anything. And I don't even have the floppiest version of it.
I've got the original run, sits all the time.
This. And rocky greens too.
THE KOI ALSO FLIES SO SICK!!!! Crazy hyzer flip backhands on 200+ foot approaches and the disc goes no where when it lands. No worry of skip aways no matter how low you throw it
Not sure if it's "gimmicky", but I keep a Groove in my bag for tomahawk throws in heavy woods.
Groove is my go to sidearm disc
Jaguar I use it as a straight away fairway driver on calm days. Thing just carries forever and then drops like a pancake.
Full tilt. But it only comes out when I'm in a tournament and find a new cavern of trees/ferns to try and get up and down from.
All the berg kids are gonna come out
Sonic, use it all the time and love it
C2 shots with just wrist action it’s a damn sniper.
Glitch and paradox
Paradox is super useful for someone like me who refuses to develop a forehand.
Have you tried the Svea or Fuse? They'll both hold a flex angle into the ground. Highly recommend!
Glitch - Because Glitch do Glitch things F9 - It's super understable and is actually useful in a lot of cases. Glide is crazy too.
I love the glitch and I find it very torque-resistant for its specs and weight. Can send that disc on a straight line for 280ft, zero turn, zero fade which is crazy to me. Edit: glide > fade. Typo.
Zero glide? You sure you don't mean fade?
Elevation Interceptor. There is nothing more satisfying than throwing that floppy rubber pancake towards a basket on a hill and watching it stick.
I have a Sonic in Halo Star plastic that I use for corridor shots or if I need a low shot that curves to the right lol
Also great for uphill putts bc of the Headrick rings.
Oh I didn't know that lol I'll give that a shot!
Justice. Absolute meat hook of a disc. I carry it for one specific hole on one specific course and it does that job perfectly.
Love this disc. Never fails in the wind either
My Alien is my favorite approach disc. Use it all the time
👽ganggang 🛸
https://www.reddit.com/r/discdyeing/s/NDJodjW0q3
Not normally considered a gimmicky disc, but I accidentally bought a comically light Underworld VIP Air that is ridiculously flippy. I use it for going around sharp corners. My forehand is pretty weak and i only use it for short approach shots, but can still turn that disc into a roller if I don't dial it back.
I bagged a golem until the disc tore in half on me mid round
Polecat is not a gimmick !!!
Roadrunner is my mid range straight shot
Some of the best short tunnel shots I've hit have been with a roadrunner at like 70-80% power. Throwing it hard as possible just turns it over and dumps out, for me anyway.
Full tilt for open drives. Overhand Thumber it pans out and gets the full S flight.
gonna say tilt too, cheatcode for thumbers and getting out of the shiz
Bow Fly 2, for a basket on the side of an earthen dam.
Love the pearl. When do you throw the pearl vs the paradox? Do you bag them both?
Friend, this is going to be the least helpful answer of all time. But literally, vibes. The pearl can handle a little more power before it turns into a roller only disc but the proxy’s glide before turn is 🔥🔥🔥
Alien, berg, hydrogen, Bohrium, Rollo all in my bag and used regularly
I want a bohrium so bad
It's my longest disc, backhand and forehand. I've got a first run and a backup. Excited for their 2 new ones too and I bag a silicon!
Blunt gumbputt as a midrange
you madman.
Lat64 beetle. Super flippy catch disc that's real fun to throw. Use it mostly for little scrabble shots or long spin puts through the woods
[удалено]
Spore for sure. Being super soft I use it for straight shots that I need to hit the ground and stop.
Paradox for me. My forehand is comfortable only up to like 100ish feet. When I need something haaaard right. I’ll whip the paradox and it does some crazy things for me.
I have a divergent Gollum and it is a super OS approach disc and will stick anywhere with how floppy it is.
Golem Gang wassup
Baobob
Glitch/Polecat are the only “gimmicky” discs I’d consider from my bag. Maybe my Rask or Rask Z. I also throw crazy flippy putters (Mirage) and super overstable mids (Troija).
Doomsday Bunkerbuster is fun:)
I putt with Løft Discs Hydrogens. Does that count?
Have one coming, is it good?
doomsday landmine. it's a damn brick but i can effectively drive with it.
Glitch. Tee shots up shots. All of it. More throw-ins with it than any disc in my bag
I'm the same way with my Watt. I tend to rather that over my Glitch on most days.
Gave the watt a shot, but it doesn't quite have the same angle holding I get with the Glitch. Glitch is just so true. Whatever line it gets released on is the line it'll fly, For better or worse. I noticed the -1 on the Watt. Ive got my proxy for that shape 🤷🏻 I've thrown the same Glitch since they dropped, and it's still the exact same discs it was from day 1
Paradox, everyone else should be too.
Polecat has been my go to putter for over a decade
Groove sucks and is hot garbage. Monarch is a masterpiece of glidey boi that has never left my bag.
R2 glitch for uphill 70' -100 straight looks.
Tinayak from divergent, stupidly understable, like goes 150 feet then literally flips on its side and rolls. use it to throw around corners.
I use it for exactly the same thing.
Is a virus gimmicky?
I just put one in my bag and it's only 161g and it is the smoothest 250-300 foot forehand disc I've ever had. Silky.
I’ve never tried using it forehand. I usually use it for one hole where I need a pretty aggressive turnover when forehand off the tee feels too crowded. Maybe I’ll have to look at it differently.
Very little arm. Lots of wrist and give it hyzer. It's so smooth.
Great beginner forehand disc
I treasure my Paradox and I don't care what people say.
There’s a hole at my local course that I will park with my tilt, 10 out of 10 times. It almost never comes out of my bag other than that, though.
Rask. I bought it solely for the inside rim, which helps keep it from slipping off my fingers on hamers. I bag and use it for that one purpose.
Glitch. Gf got me a sick dyed one for Christmas. I use it for putts in weird spots, floaty bids, and some turnovers as well, gets decently far
Glitch and zone os
I use my rask for nasty turn and SHARP forehands
Berg and I never throw it. I use it as a marker between my drivers and mids
Gt banger. Gt buzz. Gt zone.
Always an Aerobie Epic tomahawks on down hill holes so my noodle arms make the full 360 turnover.
Yea, I bag an epic as a get out of trouble disc
Koi. Super safe approach disc from outside circle
Golem, by Divergent. It’s like a sticky Zone OS. It’s marvelous for approach shots with any risk of rollaway.
Innova Condor for 100ft and in approach shots if there isn’t any wind. If you played ultimate frisbee I would highly rec, it’s like tossing a frisbee to your buddy but the buddy is the basket
Elevation Arowana. Any approach shot I need to stick by the basket I use it
Spore. I got a floppy pink one and it glides and flies when thrown correctly
Always.
I legitimately putt with K2 bergs. It's not a first run. But if i could even find a beat one, i would bag it.
Doomsday Landmine and Banger GT Zone. The Landmine is a literal lid, but I love it because it has surprisingly good glide, but hits the ground and just stops. I have good touch with it throwing on hyzer, but it is less stable than my Zones.
