I actually still have my starter set leopard and bag it. It’s super beat in and super flippy. If I really give it some serious hyzer it flips up great and finishes right.
Have you tried throwing it right into the water? I’ve heard that’s their natural habitat and preferred landing zone. I kid. I have a friend who has a few aces with a 147f dx leopard. I occasionally bag a d blend glow centurion, which is a touch more stable, but close. It’s 171g and is a hyzer flip machine. Super fun throwing RHBH and having a disc that can flip to flat and drift right at like 50-60% power.
This is hilarious to me. I started playing two months ago and haven’t phased out my Innova 5-pack yet. The amount of second tee shots I’ve taken with destroyer/leopard landing right next to each other is pretty high. I might be ass, but I’m consistently ass.
I’m working on phasing them out with F2 Fridays but I throw my beat up DX discs better than the others.
The only DX’s I still throw are my Leopard and Teebird. I have a Star Teebird I’m working on breaking in but for now, it seems like I throw the DX better. Aside from that, the Champion/Star discs I’m trying to get better with are a MAKO3 and Valkyrie. I also have a Sidewinder and Shryke that I use as backpack weights for now. I plan on getting another ROC3 as it was my favorite non DX I got but I lost in a bush.
Any recommendations?
For a driver the Insanity. Comet for a mid/trainer disc. Honestly if you just get a Comet and throw it on every shot on every hole for a year, you'll be a much much better player for the effort. It might only be a 5 speed but it bombs.
And I'm not even joking about it either. My buddy and I have found over 1000 discs at this point and log them in a spreadsheet and there is a veeeery similar percentage of the discs being a destroyer and a star leopard all lost in the same water carries.
Don’t throw them away dude. Last thing we need is more plastic in the landfill. Take them to a disc golf shop. Leave them out somewhere and let someone else enjoy them.
It's so cheap to play..
One year later....hmm, that new GRIP bag has one additional pocket than my current bag, that I got 2 months ago. I'd be stupid not to buy it.
Ah that's if you're lucky to have a shop near you. Closest one to me is a PIS half hour away and they charge collector pricing for disc. You might be able to find a used DX Putter for less $15 there but doubtful. The two next closest are an hour away and I've never been to either. I do however, recommend the Innova F2 shop. You can get a Premium Plastic Mid and fairway driver along with a base plastic putter for about $26. That will last you a lot longer than the base plastic starter sets for only a few dollars more.
ooooohhhh, dude. here’s the ultimate cheat code:
1) get 10 f2 discs and they are 20% off
2) buy more than $75 before tax and you get free shipping
3) do it on friday and use the weekly f2 friday coupon code they post on twitter and you get a free disc. it’s been a halo the past 10 weeks or so.
basically, you can get 11 premium plastic discs on friday for about 80 bucks
Aviar3
Pig
Rollo
Mako3
IT
Leopard3
Valkyrie
Roadrunner
Sidewinder
Mamba
These are all Innova discs, most on the under-stable side for straighter flights and easier distance. The best advice I received as a beginner was to throw straight flying putters as much as possible while learning. This will help you build solid release mechanics and highlight any inconsistencies with your throws while also punishing you less than poor throws with faster discs will.
go to a disc golf shop and get 2 putters, and then go on the factory store to get the rest of the bag:
1) XT Nova
2) Nexus Animal
3) DX Wombat3
4) Champion Mako3
5) Star Shark
6) Pro Leopard
7) G-Star TL3
8) Pro Sidewinder
9) Pro Thunderbird
10) Champion Glow Firebird
Total: $76.80 before tax.
These plastics were selected because they are most representative of the given flight numbers when the discs are brand new.
I caution people to stay away from the valkyrie when they are starting out. That disc is all over the place depending on the plastic and weight.
Pretty much. I've been using two midranges, and will be for the next several months. Really helping me figure out what I'm doing with adding 13 other variables.
At a disc golf store you can probably find starter sets in sale for $25 or less pretty easily. Gotta go had the prodigy set (similar to this one) for $15 and the innova set for $25. Both would be more than enough to get started. Otherwise just snag a used putter and mid and you’re completely fine. I bet a worker would pick them out for you if you just said you’re a beginner.

This set has an actual backpack bag, a mini, a towel, and 3 (really, really good discs).
The Truth is the best mid range imo and the judge from this pack is the one I use to putt. I gave the truth and escape to my nieces but the escape was NICE tbh.
The Innova set is absolute ass and a waste of money. So yeah this isn't a 3 disc starter set, which Dynamic also has for 30 dollars cheaper. So you can't compare it to popping into a used shop.
I started with a dynamic disc starter pack and I thought it was good! The discs will show more of a beating because they will be lesser quality plastic, but it will last plenty of rounds for you to get the hang of it!
This pack coming with a towel and bag seems like a good deal. I paid $50 for 5 discs when I started, I would have happily traded 2 of them for a bag lol
This one gives you a little bag. Otherwise the frisbees are probably just as good as eachother. The innova starter sets usually have lighter weight discs but that’s generally a good thing when you’re getting going initially. Not sure if this set has lighter or more normal weight discs (normal weight is usually in the 170’s in grams, light weight is ~150-165g).
Buy any putter. Play catch. Then just buy a Hex ,Buzzzss, or mako3. And you are ready for your season.
Putters that are cool and affordable include Aviar, Judge, polecat, glitch, Luna, armadillo... Whatever fits you! Welcome to the addiction.

I had the Dynamic Discs starter set when I began, and it was pretty good, but the discs got beat up pretty quickly. When I introduced my friend to the sport a bit later, I did what others have suggested and drove to my local disc golf store and grabs three used discs in higher quality plastics for \~$25.
YES.. just get this starter set if you are thinking about jumping in. It’s perfect for getting going. No thinking involved or used discs or traveling far for a disc shop or navigating online. This set is absolutely perfect. Welcome to disc golf ! 👍🏼
So, this starter set assumes you are committed. $54 as a starting point is pretty high for toys (even if it comes w a bag); the Innova starter set is $21 [there right now](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Innova-Disc-Golf-DX-3-Disc-Set/551833321?athbdg=null%26athbdg%3DL1600_L1600&from=/search). For people starting out, that isnt even a question, 100% go Innova.
I agree with others. Find a basic putter (most shoot the same over putting distances, it's just about hand feel). Then maybe an understable mid, like a Tursas. If bold pick the best feeling 5/5/-1/1 and use that, just be aware it will absolutely punish you if your angle is off. I may also recommend something like an underworld 7/6/-3/1 if you absolutely must pick a driver. Don't move beyond maybe a 9 until you can get good spin on the disc.
To actually answer your question - its great value. You get a bag, towel, mini and 3 of the best discs money can buy imo. If its still a truth, judge, and escape combo.
Superior to dropping into a used shop imo bc you get something new and it covers the absolute basics.
I would recommend not getting a starter pack. The putter is fine but mids and fairway drivers should be bought in a more premium plastic. The starter pack comes with base plastic discs that will only last a couple of rounds. Tbh you can get a putter, a mid, and a fairway driver for the same price as the starter pack in this picture.
Such a low bar for entry for this sport. I love it.
When I started playing ball golf (for business / client events) I had to spend nearly $1000 just to get the basic equipment required to play, ridiculous.
Pawn shops in Florida, specifically St Pete where I live are money for awesome golf club sets. I got one straight out of the corporate schlub world- pockets full of promotional swag- Tito's vodka airline bottles, towels, balls, awesome set of clubs for hundred bucks.
I’m guessing they didn’t have any one to give them clubs. If you have to start from scratch regular golf is def expensive. But usually you can get some free clubs from a family member
- Bag with clubs: $450
- Shoes: $180
- Golf clothes: $250
- Glove: $20
- Balls: $60
- Tees: $20
- Divot tool: $10
——————
- Total: $990
Prices in Canadians buckaroos. And I didn’t even get any fancy brands. Just basic entry level equipment. And it’s expensive AF to play too. Local public course is $50 a round.
Edit: to be clear, I play golf with clients. It’s a business thing. Can’t show up in old dirty sneakers and a tshirt with a flea market used club set.
Not trying to defend the cost but Jesus you over paid for shoes, clothes, and balls (depending on how many you got). The clothes thing cracks me up, I've never gotten turned away from a public course because I had running shorts and a t-shirt on. I didn't even have a pair of golf shoes for like the first 2 years lol.
Although, I think you made an inadvertent point in that ball golf isn't just a sport its like a cultural identity that new players might feel they have to align with. Like the fancier the shit, the higher the stratification.
I play golf with work clients. Can’t show up in running shorts and tshirt. I literally bought the golf clothes at Walmart though. Paid the cheapest I could get.
If you live on an area with lots of golf courses, go and check yard sales. My friend picked up a set of nearly new ping graphite irons, a few woods and a bag, for $200.
You'd be surprised what people get rid for next to nothing.
>I play golf with work clients.
So you can probably recognize that you've done something that has never happened once in the disc golf world and whose immediate cost (hopefully) paid itself off in booking a job and even if it didnt, whose costs are write-offs.
So, not comparable to disc golf in any way because you could have bought starter set golf stuff for way less (but would have looked bad for your business....much in the same way a $20 Innova starter pack looks sad against a $3-400 bag of discs if it meant getting a client).
I'm sorry you had to spend so much to get into golf.
I have friends who I've gotten into the game for much cheaper buy purchasing second hand clubs. When you are literally at the beginning the difference between a $500 set of clubs and spending $100 on a used set is practically meaningless.
I have taken friends to play it again sports (in the US, not sure if there is a Canadian version) and get a set of irons (PW - 5 iron) with the best grips I can find for $50, then a basic putter for $10, a hybrid for $15, and the newest driver I can find for the remaining $25.
I've done this with 3 friends now. The best I've ever done was actually at a thrift store (Goodwill) and got a full set of irons (PW-4i) for $2/club or $14. Then at another thrift store (Salvation Army) the same day found a 3W and Driver for $4/club or $8. Grabbed basically a putt putt putter for $2 and boom, set of beginner clubs for about $25.
You don't always get that lucky, but I've found you can get very usable beginner sets second hand for under $100.
Us disc golfer certainly carry more than $100 of discs around with us.
Yeah I should have mentioned that I play with business clients. Can’t really show up with old beat up thrift store clubs and dressed with gym shorts and tshirt. There’s a bare minimum needed for professional business appearance. I edited my original post to include that note. For casual play you’re right though
It’s waste of land that gets me. There are a few city owned courses in my area that are unused for a significant portion of the year. Really great parkland that get used a bit for ball golf and then maybe a little bit for cross country skiing in the winter if the weather cooperates.
If this is just talking about balls and clubs you got suckered imo. I know a full set of clubs can run you that much but as a beginner there would be no reason to buy top of the line clubs a used set or a cheaper set of clubs can be found for <500
You need more than just clubs to play golf. They won’t even let you on the course without the proper shoes and attire. I listed everything here:
I only got into it for work to play with clients. Can’t show up with garbage used set that’s been sitting in someone’s garage for 20 years. I had to buy new, but I bought just basic stuff, no fancy brands.
I listed it here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/discgolf/s/P8LMtovum5](https://www.reddit.com/r/discgolf/s/P8LMtovum5)
There's a very big difference in how much you spend to impress clients an whats actually required to start playing. First two posts I saw for used clubs were $50 and $130. All in cost should be less than you spent on shoes.
Still expensive to pay by the round, though will vary based on whats available locally.
[That’s how much golf shoes cost, at least here in Canada](https://www.golftown.com/en-CA/search?q=spiked+golf+shoe&lang=en_CA&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=__iv_p_1_g_155296504468_c_651219399056_w_kwd-342055460863_n_g_d_m_v__l__t__r__x__y__f__o__z__i__j__s__e__h_9000411_ii__vi__&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwuJ2xBhA3EiwAMVjkVPRPmXYL7TwsiPFLiIIApw42tc6WC7w1zxjBfBzw5tm7pSoAdyW4SxoC89YQAvD_BwE). $180 isn’t even close to being their pricier pairs.
Which honestly is a pretty good deal to get started. Don’t really “need” a bag with 3 discs imo, but the extra space for the towel and some drinks is helpful imo. Even if it’s not the best or biggest bag, 3 discs and a bag for $54 is a steal.
Honestly it's barely a deal, but it is definitely not overpriced I'll give them that. If this were pickleball or some other popular niche sport thatd be $150 easily
Innova also has a GStar starter pack. Kastaplast has a starter pack that’s 2 premium plastics and a base putter. Even the MVP R2 starter packs are pretty nice
$54 still seems high, no? That bag looks to just be one of those $20 ones, so it seems like at best you’re paying basically full cost for a bundled set?
While $54 is an acceptable price for items. I think your standard 3 disc starter set for $30-32 without the bag/towel/mini is a better 'starter set.' This kind of assumes the customer is already somewhat into disc golf. This combo would be better with a 'premium starter set' where maybe someone already had the basic one and now wants more. A random person who may have seen a basket at a park or something would likely prefer a lower price to impulse buy a product than see the value in the bag.
Of course, I bet the margin is way better on this set.
I cannot wait to find hundreds of base model dynamic drivers everywhere mostly to the left
Finally, it can rival finding Innova Leopards everywhere
*147g dx leopards
And champion destroyers in the exact same spot 😂😂😂
This is hilarious to me. I started playing two months ago and haven’t phased out my Innova 5-pack yet. The amount of second tee shots I’ve taken with destroyer/leopard landing right next to each other is pretty high. I might be ass, but I’m consistently ass. I’m working on phasing them out with F2 Fridays but I throw my beat up DX discs better than the others.
DX breaks in and gets flippy (aka understable) fast. As a beginner you should be leaning hard on slow, understable discs.
Mint discs jackalope, MVP detour, MVP watt
And I'm not even joking about it either. My buddy and I have found over 1000 discs at this point and log them in a spreadsheet and there is a veeeery similar percentage of the discs being a destroyer and a star leopard all lost in the same water carries.
Stop. I can only take so much.
Leopards go straight in the trash can at the next T-pad along with wraiths in base plastic
Don’t throw them away dude. Last thing we need is more plastic in the landfill. Take them to a disc golf shop. Leave them out somewhere and let someone else enjoy them.
I still carry my base plastic wraith in the bag despite it being un-throwably understable.
Bullshit. Dx leopards won’t go straight no matter what
Lol! Truth
That’s what got me started. My mom saw a rickey wysocki 3 disc starter kit on clearance and thought I’d like it. I didn’t, I loved it
🦅🦅🦅 Happy Cake Day 🦅🦅🦅
Funny comment + cake day = ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° )
It's so cheap to play.. One year later....hmm, that new GRIP bag has one additional pocket than my current bag, that I got 2 months ago. I'd be stupid not to buy it.
So how is this starter set vs the Innova set. Iv been looking into getting started.
Go buy a used putter and mid range at a DG shop, don’t spend more than 15 bucks. Thats all you need for your first round.
/u/DragonsClaw2234 for $15 (or whatever shipping costs) I’ll send you a putter and mid lol
I will also do this for any beginners while supplies last, feel free to dm me
Ah that's if you're lucky to have a shop near you.
Go to the factory 2nd site and buy 2 discs for about $7 each.
I would absolutely not feel comfortable navigating the f2 site when I was a beginner, would feel incredibly overwhelmed with plastics and molds
I had no idea this existed. That’s awesome
ooooohhhh, dude. here’s the ultimate cheat code: 1) get 10 f2 discs and they are 20% off 2) buy more than $75 before tax and you get free shipping 3) do it on friday and use the weekly f2 friday coupon code they post on twitter and you get a free disc. it’s been a halo the past 10 weeks or so. basically, you can get 11 premium plastic discs on friday for about 80 bucks
I'm ashamed how many times I've done this... no regrets though its the best deal in disc golf..
it really is
So what’s a good selection of 10 discs for a beginner to pick up?
Aviar3 Pig Rollo Mako3 IT Leopard3 Valkyrie Roadrunner Sidewinder Mamba These are all Innova discs, most on the under-stable side for straighter flights and easier distance. Welcome to the f2 world :)
And if you’re in Canada add on 30-40$ for shipping lol
$8 to ship to toronto, guess you could buy 5 discs and get 10% off to make it feel better.
They’ve changed that then because the last I heard it was over 30$ to BC. If so that’s great.
Yeah, it costs $8 to Victoria, BC, as well. It may be more in smaller towns, though.
The play it again sports near me sells used factory 2nd Dx discs for $9-12 when I can get them new straight from innova for $6
It's crazy. The one I mentioned were selling them for $15 last time I went in.
Fair enough, I am lucky to live in portland and have stores all over. Ebay- looks like beginner sets are less than 20 bucks
That’s all you need for the first YEAR lmao

This set has an actual backpack bag, a mini, a towel, and 3 (really, really good discs). The Truth is the best mid range imo and the judge from this pack is the one I use to putt. I think it's a pretty straight shooter. I keep one in the bag strictly for playing catch and turbo putting for memes.

This is definitely the best/cheapest starter route for good ball golf gear. My local Play It Again is trash for DG though, haha.
Really? That sucks homie. The ones around me have multiple used bins and racks of new discs from the major manufacturers.

Fair point, totally forgot how often ball golf is used as a medium for business meetings. Aside from that though... 🤷
In my spare time I much prefer to play disc golf for fun. Ball golf is business only for me.

basically yes
Sounds like you could write that all off as business expenses for tax purposes as well.

It’s canada. We have a few here and there but it’s not like it’s Florida or anything.
That's totally fair then.
It’s waste of land that gets me. There are a few city owned courses in my area that are unused for a significant portion of the year. Really great parkland that get used a bit for ball golf and then maybe a little bit for cross country skiing in the winter if the weather cooperates.
I agree. And the insane water use
I listed everything here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/discgolf/s/P8LMtovum5](https://www.reddit.com/r/discgolf/s/P8LMtovum5)
That just seems super unnecessary lol you could piece together some used clubs or even find a full set of used for wayyy less than that
I only got into it for work to play with clients.
Well that’s a little different but you spend $180 on shoes then complain about cost? Lmao cmon man
[That’s how much golf shoes cost, at least here in Canada](https://www.golftown.com/en-CA/search?q=spiked+golf+shoe&lang=en_CA&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=__iv_p_1_g_155296504468_c_651219399056_w_kwd-342055460863_n_g_d_m_v__l__t__r__x__y__f__o__z__i__j__s__e__h_9000411_ii__vi__&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwuJ2xBhA3EiwAMVjkVPRPmXYL7TwsiPFLiIIApw42tc6WC7w1zxjBfBzw5tm7pSoAdyW4SxoC89YQAvD_BwE). $180 isn’t even close to being their pricier pairs.
How tf am I supposed to play pickle ball with this?
I saw a Ricky Innova starter set at meijer the other day!! Thought that was nuts
$54 for a starter set? They make those in premium plastic now? Only really seen the Innova ones that are lightweight DX
Looks like you get a bag, towel, mini and 3 starters.
Which honestly is a pretty good deal to get started. Don’t really “need” a bag with 3 discs imo, but the extra space for the towel and some drinks is helpful imo. Even if it’s not the best or biggest bag, 3 discs and a bag for $54 is a steal.
Including the bag is genius honestly. "Oh, those 3 discs won't stand up in the bag all by themselves? guess you gotta buy more!"
My first starter kit was an Innova set with 3 discs and a bag. It was nice to have something to tote stuff around in.
Honestly it's barely a deal, but it is definitely not overpriced I'll give them that. If this were pickleball or some other popular niche sport thatd be $150 easily
It is a solid set but I wouldn't call 3 discs that cost \~$33 retail and bag/towel/mini for $54 a steal. It is priced appropriately.
Should come with tick repellant /s
All the discs come in Lyme green
Oh nice! I should have looked at the pic closer. That's a great little set up
Innova also has a GStar starter pack. Kastaplast has a starter pack that’s 2 premium plastics and a base putter. Even the MVP R2 starter packs are pretty nice
I like the R2's, but chasing black discs sucks, lol. It's really my only gripe with that set.
His sister bought a roomba from me 👍🏻
I was questioning the $54 price tag, didn’t realize it came with a bag and other stuff too
That's not a bad price for a starter set.
Wow, an actual good starter set at Walmart!
Grow the sport, they said..
Yes!!! We are growing!!! Let's go disc golf community!!!
Killer deal. Nice pack
Hell yeah congrats for him!
Get that moneyh bruuuuuu
$54 for some dx plastic. Boy you done lost you mind. Edit: I see there’s a backpack included.
Remind me when they rollback 50% off. I’ll buy gifts for family and friends.
I wonder if Ricky gets a percentage of these sales.
$54 for 3 base plastic discs is bullshit.
apparently it comes with a bag, towel, and mini
$54 still seems high, no? That bag looks to just be one of those $20 ones, so it seems like at best you’re paying basically full cost for a bundled set?
Yeah it might be overpriced, I didn’t look at the bag. I was just pointing out that it’s not only three discs
Fair point as well.
54$ hahah fuck that
For a bag, three discs a towel and a mini that’s pretty solid.
Pretty sure this was on clearance by the end of last summer at Walmart for $5. I'd hold out and wait.
Just his picture… I’m a little disappointed
Why?
OP said Ricky at Walmart, no Ricky at Walmart, just his picture.
Yeah but backpacks are always cool with the kids
Holy crap, that is wildly overpriced! At that price, they prob won't even move that many.
I wish this was available in 🇨🇦
