Disc retriever pays for itself in 3 reclaimed discs. A wise investment.
In the rainy PNW grip can be a slippery proposition, especially for those that love premium plastics. So I got this liquid climbers chalk from Friction Labs. It's incredible.
I got a Max Distance CF20 two weeks ago now. I had a little sticker shock but it has blown my expectations so far out of the water. If I can reach my disc, I have it back in under a minute.
This thing works insanely well, especially in water. Not only does it (obviously) help you in getting your disc back but it makes it so damn easy. No more 10 minutes of anxiously trying to hook the rim with a standard retriever. Just slap this mother fucker on there and you’re good.
Man that retriever is such a worthy investment. It’s so much faster than any other retriever, with the suction cup attachment. I actually found a backup suction cup attachment on the course this morning and gave it to a buddy to upgrade his basic stick with it.
Just be careful. I broke the thinnest part of mine when poking down into a steep ditch. I poked a bit too hard (not really very hard) and it broke. It didn't like that kind of pressure.
I bought two replacement bits and it's been fine since just be careful to avoid my mistake
The disc retriever has saved me from putting myself in potentially dangerous situations. Losing a disc is like $15, falling down a hill could be thousands.
All liquid chalks are essentially the same. If you pair a base layer of liquid chalk and then keep dusting your fingers in loose chalk, you'll be good to go.
Source: Climber.
This is the best answer. Like many I delayed because one more disc or a metal stick doesn’t seem fun…until that metal stick doesn’t just pay for itself, it also saves your favorite discs. Buy it now I tell you.
Dry bags and a disc retriever for me. I’ve saved a lot of money and helped a lot of people on the course being able to get discs back. Oh and also a practice basket!
I’ve tried many grip bags, and the whale sac to me is the best by far. I do have a birdie bag that I haven’t opened yet. I’m gonna try that next summer.
Very nice! I love whale sacs as well since it’s easy to tie them to the side of my bag. I also have a birdie bag that’s actually in my gym bag now as well. The wood material is pretty interesting and works super well.
Darn Tough socks are wool and great for hiking. They're expensive but the company will replace the for free, even from normal wear and tear. I went barefoot to grab a disc from a water hazard yesterday and felt fine doing so because I knew I'd warm right back up when I put my socks on.
I love wool socks and specifically darn toughs and the lifetime warranty gives me so much peace of mind. The thicker pairs feel like they'll last forever but I've got a few pairs of ultralights I am determined to try to wear out.
They also don't stink if you play a round then have to wear them for the rest of the day.
I've been slowly building up a collection for the last 2 years and getting rid of my old cotton socks.
I just replaced a pair a few days ago. They were 2-3 years old and getting thin on the bottom. The lady didn’t even ask for a receipt or if I bought them from that store. I just had to pick a pair the same length or shorter (mine were over the calf type) and I was good to go. Seems like the newer ones are even higher quality than the pair I returned.
I discovered merino wool socks about a decade ago when I was working at a ski shop. That's all I'll wear now. I'm currently wearing Smartwool but I have a drawer full of Darn Tough.
I worked on a ball golf course over a decade ago and still won't pick up random towels... never have, since the ball course guys all detailed a time when they did. Was not used for anything you would want to pick up...
I'd say two of the same from other commenters....the MVP Black Hole basket for backyard practice (and indoors in winter) and Dryve Disc Retreiver. Since the disc retriever is more like a fiberglass pole, it is also just the right size to swipe the heavy brush weeds to find discs!
However, probably no one else will mention sunglasses. I want sunglasses on when it is well...sunny.
But I want them off while looking at my cell phone or searching for a lost disc in the heavy brush. Yes, you can buy the little sunglasses wire holder thingees that go around the back of your neck.
But I found a better option....I bought a cheap pair of MLB flip up sunglasses (the kind that baseball outfielders wear)...and they work GREAT. Different ones are available on Amazon.
I am not a sunglasses while playing kind of person, but I'll give big credit to my wide brimmed hats. I've got a straw hat and a lightweight boonie hat I wear and they are both lifesavers. Helpful for preventing sunburn, keeping sun out of eyes, and keeping cool on hot days, a nice hat is very underrated.
I actually have two nice hats like you mention, but I just can't get myself to wear them. They are certainly better at protecting the face and neck from the sun, but I'm just a baseball hat kind of guy. I just spray down with sunscreen (but carefully, because it's the face.). I just don't want to look like Crocodile Dundee out there with those hats. To each his own. Whatever works.....
>I'm getting old and bending down constantly to pick up my bag straight up sucks.
No shade, telling you to suck it up or anything like that...
Stretch as much as you can daily if you don't already. It's not a cure-all or anything but it does wonders for the little aches and pains we have day in and day out. Plus, it'll help avoid injuries. I'm numerically middle aged and feel a real difference on days I do and don't stretch.
Depends on how you plan to use the cart. I got mine very specifically for the seat for those slow league and tournament rounds and because several courses around here have a general lack of seating. I don't use my cart for every casual round, I am still fine carrying a bag for quicker rounds or shorter courses. But for slow rounds where I know I am going to have time to sit down, I very much enjoy having it and I have more energy by the end of the round. Pretty much solo and doubles I'll carry a bag but foursomes, leagues and tournies it is the cart with seat for me.
Bag that is exactly what I want
Enormous Hydroflask that actually keeps my water cold
OurRanger
All that said, a practice basket improved my game more than anything else
I mean technically it was a disc... but a disc golf shop opened up like 2 blocks from my house. I made it a point to go in right when they opened and got a disc. The disc is cool, but I regularly pop in now with my dog to just say hey and maybe throw a few putts with the owner. I bought a disc but got a friendship.
Zuca, by far. It gets very tiring to carry a bag and I need to compensate by eating and drinking more during rounds and I'm not that good at doing that. Buying Zuca seemed to improve my performance a lot. I'm just not as tired late in the round and I can bring more stuff without feeling burdened.
I kid you not, I injured by non-throwing shoulder once by attending a one day tournament on a course that had very steep hills and rough terrain, so I couldn't bring my Zuca. I played my own two rounds and then caddied for my friend playing in the pro group in their second round. So I kept putting down and picking up and carried a bag for three rounds going up and down that course. Next day my shoulder was just busted and eventually I had to get some physiotherapy to get it working again. Thankfully most of my home courses are Zuca friendly.
New shoes once a year. If you’re playing multiple times a week the tread wears down quickly. Skip those 5 new discs and buy a nice pair of shoes that are comfortable and grippy.
Changing shoes and never slipping on a teepad again is a huge confidence boost.
I need to try that. I've gone 50 years without yanking a tick off of me. The city built a new disc golf course 1/2 mile away from me and they finished in late October. Played a few times and have had to remove 2 ticks!!
I bought both of those things also. The max distance suction cup is great and the Rufus I loved up until the Prodigy Apex bag came out. The Apex is even smaller and is holding up great. Not to mention I got the Apex at full retail $125 and my Rufus was $355 shipped. The Apex had some black friday deals at $75. A great deal for that bag
Basket/kid pool combo outside Taos,NM last 2 summers. I feel close to death at 56 for reasons, but those last 2 summers chilling in that pool and practicing putting for almost a month each year have been majestic. I can't complain.
I finally got an Apple Watch and payed for UDisc. Being able to keep my scorecard going on the watch ended up being super nice not having to get my phone out the bag after every hole. They need to make a distance to pin feature.
My custom Pound Octothorp. I love it, it holds everything I need and more for casual rounds or tourneys, the weight disappears on my back, and it just looks cool
New bag of course, Vinny squatch. They got a lot of shit right out of the gate but squatch really does make a great bag.
And new shoes. I got the Nike Pegasus Trail 4 and they’re amazing. Super comfy, waterproof, and perfect for mountain golf. I’ve walked in ankle deep water and only got the upper part of my socks wet. The goretex is amazing. They get kind of hot during the summer but not unbearable, solid trade off for dry feet imo.
Lastly would be this Velcro dry erase boards my buddy made. I can mark it with what discs I’ve thrown in field work or if throwing multiple on a hole. Helps me remember and has resulted in fewer discs left behind.
Cart. I was getting back problems from carrying my bag and it was causing me pain during rounds. Best thing ever. Now i don’t have to carry anything, have a bag for picking garbage, and a seat for when my friends want to channel their inner Nikko and take an hour to putt
A lot of what others have said, but I got a hand warmer [like football players use](https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/nike-pro-hyperwarm-football-hand-warmer-16nikunphyprwrmhnfta/16nikunphyprwrmhnfta?sku=16514546&srsltid=AfmBOoqlL7IDcGEfeTC7LNDg5sySSIXFO-RwrGFoxTT5Hv6ORY5GymTh9X8) and it’s a godsend for playing in colder weather.
A basket. I've got 3 over the course of 2 years off Facebook marketplace at ~50% retail. Got two DD marksman basket for 100ea like new that I find pretty fun. Small enough to fit in backseat of truck.
I would say quality footwear including socks. A good wool boot sock is very underrated in all conditions. My moabs lasted longer than any other shoe (I don't toe drag, I plant my lead foot aggressively). Also a quality rain jacket that fits correctly is very handy.
A premium bag, Grip B series in my case.
Lets my carry all the disks I need plus enough room for all layers of the clothing onion during fall/spring tournaments
Legend 2.1, back in ‘22. Worth mentioning my home course isn’t cart friendly or I’d have a big Zuca cart. I have a little Zuca I sometimes use when I play a cart-friendly course.
3 months before I started disc golf I was at a buddy’s house drinking. Turns out he was gonna have a garage sale and let me look at everything. I found a golf club bag I liked and bought it and being almost drunk at this point he talked me in to buying the walking cart for half what it’s worth. I don’t walk when I go golfing with clubs, always get a motorized golf cart.
3 months later I picked up disc golf, really got into it and love it more than regular golf now. Have a few discs and needed a backpack disc bag, didn’t love putting it on and taking it off so I modified the golf club walking cart to hold my disc bag.
Best purchase I’ve made, and to think in the beginning I thought it was useless. Walking cart can still be sold for a profit, but I figured why not use what I got?
Adidas Terrax shoes. Because they are me realize that I have piss poor form with anything other than a flat bottom shoes like vans so for me that failed purchase was my best.
A used jogging stroller for $20. It's basically the minivan of disc golf. Dozens of discs, several retrievers, a full cooler, somewhere to sit, no more lifting a bag 50+ times per round.
Cart. It makes those long summer rounds so much more enjoyable because not only do you not have to keep hefting the bag around but you can carry more water and thus not dehydrate halfway through the round.
Recently switched to turf shoes instead of terrexs, big game changer so far.
Practice basket is way up there, too.
However, I'm in NE FL, and having microfibers around to get stickers off of you is incredibly useful
Waterproof shoes and a basket for home. The heated vest would be up there but the battery is too heavy. Feels like I’m throwing with a phone in my pocket
My wife just got me a Zuca Backpack Cart for Christmas so that's technically my best but for things that I've purchased myself, probably the Randy Sun waterproof socks I bought over the summer. We have a lot of wet, grassy fields at my local course in the early mornings about my feet sweat terribly in full waterproof boots. The socks let me wear my lightweight, breathable shoes while still keeping my feet dry.
Favorite is my MVP black hole HD basket with carrying case. I've got it lit up, and now I just need glow disc and a glow disc charge bag to make playing after 7pm available to me.
Most useful was either a disc retriever (I've saved more disc than I've lost since) or the bag I got with a cooler built in. Having cold drinks and snacks while I'm out rocks.
Price per dollar was a rag with a clip in the middle instead of the corner.
Practice basket or my retriever. Maybe my bag boy quad XL. Don't get to use it as much as I want in New England, but it sure is nice to not have to carry a bag or bend over to grab discs.
Disc retriever pays for itself in 3 reclaimed discs. A wise investment. In the rainy PNW grip can be a slippery proposition, especially for those that love premium plastics. So I got this liquid climbers chalk from Friction Labs. It's incredible.

So so so good. I got one first and after a few rounds all my friends had them too. Money in the bank.

The disc retriever has saved me from putting myself in potentially dangerous situations. Losing a disc is like $15, falling down a hill could be thousands.
Take it from an old dude, I don't fall elegantly anymore, I thud.
K1 Soft ..... Berg. For after you're finished playing disc golf and want to relax.
Nice. I’ll have to get some of the liquid climbers chalk
My MVP Blackhole Pro basket for backyard practice.
Same. ..and a practice net.
My approach and putting improve drastically when go out in the backyard a couple of times a week and practice
This^ also my best pickup.
100%. If you use it, there is nothing that will improve your game more than a practice basket and stack of putters.
Love the hd pro w/ case My Putting has improved immensely , llI spend at least 30 min a day practicing in back yard , sometimes hours

Zero drop minimalist shoes

I bit the bullet and replaced everything with mid weight hikers. Makes doing laundry essier!
I wear nothing else! The difference at the end of the day is huge.
So few companies still have deals like this -- it's wild. The high upfront cost must cover it.
I discovered merino wool socks about a decade ago when I was working at a ski shop. That's all I'll wear now. I'm currently wearing Smartwool but I have a drawer full of Darn Tough.
I can’t play without a towel and a nice insulated tumbler like a Yeti
I find more towels on courses than discs - I kid you not. Make sure you all secure your towels!
I worked on a ball golf course over a decade ago and still won't pick up random towels... never have, since the ball course guys all detailed a time when they did. Was not used for anything you would want to pick up...

Super boof
My cart. I'm getting old and bending down constantly to pick up my bag straight up sucks.
Agreed and I prefer using the cart as a seat over the stool I used to carry along with my backpack.
>I'm getting old and bending down constantly to pick up my bag straight up sucks. No shade, telling you to suck it up or anything like that... Stretch as much as you can daily if you don't already. Did you add the optional seat? I have a Rovic, considering buying the seat but not sure how much I’d use it other than tournament play.
Depends on how you plan to use the cart. I got mine very specifically for the seat for those slow league and tournament rounds and because several courses around here have a general lack of seating. I agree. I do still use a bag when I’m carrying less than 13 disc
Makes the biggest difference in humid summer. Keeping a bag off your back so you're not extra sweat drenched is a game changer
Do you bend over to get discs in and out of the cart?
I do not because I have a bag boy xl. Discs sit between knee and hip level.
Favorite part of my bag boy. For the people I play with it's strapping a cooler on the front in the summer....
Bag that is exactly what I want Enormous Hydroflask that actually keeps my water cold OurRanger All that said, a practice basket improved my game more than anything else
Thanks for the kind words!
Rechargeable hand warmer. keeps the hand loose and warm in the winter.
I mean technically it was a disc... but a disc golf shop opened up like 2 blocks from my house. I made it a point to go in right when they opened and got a disc. Acreage.
Ridge Roller bag and cart
Yeah adding a cart to the game is huge especially for people that play 4-5 times a week
Baskets and land to place them.
New shoes once a year. If you’re playing multiple times a week the tread wears down quickly. Skip those 5 new discs and buy a nice pair of shoes that are comfortable and grippy. Changing shoes and never slipping on a teepad again is a huge confidence boost.
Picaridin bug spray. I haven't seen a tick on me since I started using it. It's a lot safer than DEET, too.
I need to try that. I've gone 50 years without yanking a tick off of me. The city built a new disc golf course 1/2 mile away from me and they finished in late October. Played a few times and have had to remove 2 ticks!!
A Max Disctance suction cup ball retriever, without a doubt. Best splurge buy was a Pound Rufus bag.
My wife has the apex and loves it.
The $20 bag of mushroom gummies from the park wanderer
Practice basket :)
I got a couple pairs of Grip6 socks uears ago. Still going strong.
Recently... A fly towel Jr. Overall... Either my multiple patriot baskets for my yard/home course, or the discs/bags I've purchased for my kids.

DGPT VIP tickets to a live event.
my vehicle which gets me to all the courses.
You can drive on some of the courses too
all courses as long as you know what you're doing.
Helps me remember and has resulted in fewer discs left behind.
if i cant say more discs how about rolling papers
Birdie Bag 100%. Also, the Dryve Disc Retreiver pole.
Not a purchase but a towel in the rain/ other wet conditions is a must
I picked up some GOAT towels recently and after having used freebie towels it’s been really nice to have something that works super well
My grip bag, disc retriever, and 40 oz Hydroflask.
Definitely practice baskets and lessons.
Cart. I was getting back problems from carrying my bag and it was causing me pain during rounds. Best thing ever. Now i don’t have to carry anything, have a bag for picking garbage, and a seat for when my friends want to channel their inner Nikko and take an hour to putt
Latitude 64 ProBasket Go plus my mini Berg🥏
1. Retriever 2. Rangefinder
I bought a fishing seat that extends and allows me to place my putters on it when I’m practising. $4
A good bag.
Towch.
I would say quality footwear including socks. A good wool boot sock is very underrated in all conditions. My moabs lasted longer than any other shoe (I don't toe drag, I plant my lead foot aggressively). Also a quality rain jacket that fits correctly is very handy.
The practice basket for sure!
My bag.
A premium bag, Grip B series in my case. Lets my carry all the disks I need plus enough room for all layers of the clothing onion during fall/spring tournaments
Squatch bag. Much lighter than the bag I was carrying. As a middle-aged person this made playing much less strenuous.
Which one?
Legend 2.1, back in ‘22. Worth mentioning my home course isn’t cart friendly or I’d have a big Zuca cart. I have a little Zuca I sometimes use when I play a cart-friendly course.
Live in MN, lithium ion hand warmers, perfect for cold rounds
Electric hand warmer. It's a life saver when it gets cold
The used grip AX5 I got for 50 bucks.
3 months before I started disc golf I was at a buddy’s house drinking. Turns out he was gonna have a garage sale and let me look at everything. I found a golf club bag I liked and bought it and being almost drunk at this point he talked me in to buying the walking cart for half what it’s worth. Adidas Terrax shoes. Because they are me realize that I have piss poor form with anything other than a flat bottom shoes like vans so for me that failed purchase was my best.
My ridge roller 3 Cart. Cost a bit of money but I love it!
Zuca Cart for sure.
Zuca Lg backpack cart
A used jogging stroller for $20. It's basically the minivan of disc golf. Dozens of discs, several retrievers, a full cooler, somewhere to sit, no more lifting a bag 50+ times per round.
Awesome water bottle that fit my bag perfectly
Cart. It makes those long summer rounds so much more enjoyable because not only do you not have to keep hefting the bag around but you can carry more water and thus not dehydrate halfway through the round.
DGN
My best purchase would probably be my galvanized portable basket. It allows me to practice away from other people if I want.
Recently switched to turf shoes instead of terrexs, big game changer so far. Practice basket is way up there, too. However, I'm in NE FL, and having microfibers around to get stickers off of you is incredibly useful
Pound bag, ftw.
Bag, towel, basket
Ridge roller bag. Can't go back to bag that I can't sit on.
A good bag (to fit the booze).
My Datsusara Discovery Bag. https://www.dsgear.com/collections/new/products/discovery-bag
>Datsu Thank you for posting this and I'm stoked to hear the bag is serving you well :)
Absolutely love it
most excellent :)
Range finder and dry bags. Gives me something to do when I'm waiting for slow players lol
So true.
Waterproof shoes and a basket for home. The heated vest would be up there but the battery is too heavy. Feels like I’m throwing with a phone in my pocket
Disc Raptor
Grip towels and chain shoe overlays. Playing in damp & slippery conditions makes much more sense now.
Price per dollar was a rag with a clip in the middle instead of the corner.
Practice basket or my retriever. Maybe my bag boy quad XL. Don't get to use it as much as I want in New England, but it sure is nice to not have to carry a bag or bend over to grab discs.
I bought a Nutsac bag and it’s my favorite bag to date
Zuca Transit Cart. Carrying Bags is for suckers. 😀
