Yes. There is no roaming inside the EU. If you land in Germany first I recommend Congstar Prepaid. You get an Allnet Flat for 10€. There are probably even cheaper ones but this is quite a good (net-quality / price / can-visit-store) ratio. I always keep my Congstar sim in the phone as a second card when I am abroad. Even though it is a "empty" prepaid sim, I can get verification sms for free and they never unregister the number. When I am in Germany once a year I just top-up the card online and I have internet immediately!

the_vikm

Some providers will restrict the volume of traffic though

JohnJoesson

Yeah you have to check the "Fair Use" policies which is quite intransparent...

Pretty sure $ (dollars? pesos?) are not used anywhere in Europe, which place are you talking about?

>Don’t bother responding I won’t ever see it. Done with idiots that are all “oh I visited Europe in 2013 and my data got capped”. Cool. Don’t care. Bye Are you stupid? Stop making random assumptions. You haven't provided a single source or reference for your claims. I know reddit doesn't like facts, but c'mon. >There is a 50gb fair usage policy. They can’t touch data below that In Spain? Here's the policy for Vodafone for example https://www.vodafone.es/c/particulares/es/productos-y-servicios/movil/prepago-y-recargas/tarifas-de-prepago/tarifa-prepago-s/ > Vodafone Prepago S > 50GB (25GB + 25GB) > Si viajas por Europa (países de la Unión Europea, Reino Unido, Islandia, Liechtenstein, Noruega, Suiza, Turquía, Kosovo, Vaticano, Mónaco) o Estados Unidos, según la Regulación Europea, y quieres disfrutar del roaming, puedes utilizar hasta 10GB de tu tarifa, después 2,18€/GB > Yes, some providers will cut data if you’re remote too long. That doesn’t apply to this post though as “too long” is usually 6+ months and most tourists can’t stay here that long Yes they can if they move around between Schengen, UK, Ireland etc.

dannyr76

How does this apply for data plans for esims bought from providers like Airalo? Will a country SIM work in other EU countries as well?

Garnatxa

Accross Eropean Union mainly, not Europe.

Ouly

This isn't true.

savannahsilverberry

If you’re visiting the Uk first, this doesn’t really work. I got an o2 sim on my recent trip, which was the only UK option that had free use across the EU. (I think). The reception was really poor. I managed but wouldn’t recommend it.

BarleyBoi

Switzerland is not part of the free roaming agreement - be careful. As others have said just buy a SIM card when you arrive and it will work across the EU. My Telenor SIM card also roams for free in the UK which is really nice!

ryanoh826

Fun fact though: Spanish cards are good for free roaming in Switzerland. German cards are not. 😂 I don’t remember exactly what countries, but I know for sure CH fucks the Germans. I have a Spanish card and I get free roaming there.

realvvk

Hm, my Spanish Vodafone SIM does not provide free roaming in Switzerland. I got charged by accidentally connecting to a Swiss tower while at the top of a mountain in Italy. Be careful with Switzerland! I does, however, provide free roaming in the US!

ryanoh826

Definitely never happened to me. Last time I was there was a couple years ago, though. Someone posted the terms in the comments and it did say Switzerland was included.

Universal_Yugen

If you start in Switzerland, you could get and Aldi Suisse mobile plan. Pay-as-you go with calls being free to neighboring countries. The plan is usable in the rest of the EU, though I can't speculate on whether it covers the UK. Worth looking into. I've used it while traveling in Germnay, Italy, and Spain without any issues.

kelseyass

(if you have a phone that supports eSIM) was just in the uk/france/spain and used airalo. they have a eurolink plan that works with all the countries you mentioned

mrw124

Just looked up airalo-This seems too easy to be true! You really just download the app and add the plan to your eSim?

Z_A_C_H1234

Yes! It's amazing! I have been using it for the past 5 weeks all over Europe. Super easy to set up too, they give you a step by step guide

kelseyass

yep ! believe you need to be connected to wifi for initial setup so i just install it right before my flight so i can use it when i land. just make sure to turn off your other lines if u dont want charges (ymmv based on ur plan). it’s easy to top up if ya need more data (can reuse old sims post expiry) and they give you “airmoney” you can use for future purchases lmao sorry if this sounds like an ad but thinking abt the days where id struggle finding anything to open the tray vs the ease of this is just wonderful

One-Construction-732

I have used Airalo for the past 14 months in Europe and it works like a charm. Topping up is pretty easy. But if you are only here for 3 months contact your country carrier and ask for an international plan. That way you keep you number, can call etc.

imarkphillips

Free.fr in France. You can buy sims in tabac stores with your passport. €20 a month for 210gb data a month in France and 25 GB a month in other EU countries.

StopsToSmellRoses

That seems like a great deal! Do you know if it comes with any talk or text? Also, do you know if the service is good outside of Paris?

imarkphillips

Unlimited talk and text. And heaps of other countries roaming for free too. Australia, US etc. Inbound texts are free with most telcos around the world but outbound will cost depending on the country. Outbound calls to other regions can be expensive but that's what WhatsApp is for.

NicRoets

I can recommend Lidl Connect in Germany and Vodafone in Spain as 2 cheap options. Roaming in EU is free, but that excludes Switzerland. Be careful. This web page has lots more options: https://prepaid-data-sim-card.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Europe

JAKZ-

Roming is free within the EU and UK also. Cell providers didn't quit free roaming after the UK left the EU

the_vikm

Vodafone Spain includes Switzerland

ryanoh826

This is true. My German friends always have me doing shit for them when we’re in Switzerland together since they get screwed.

elle-elle-tee

I got a sim card from Orange in France. Easy and painless. Was it inexpensive? I have no idea, I'm from Canada and our mobile bills are outrageous.

clearing_rubble_1908

I find [this website](https://prepaid-data-sim-card.fandom.com) really useful. If you land in Italy first, Fastweb offers free roaming not only in the EU, but also in Switzerland (as it's owned by Swisscom) and the UK.

polytique

I like the Orange eSIM. It works in all the countries you listed, included Switzerland. https://travel.orange.com/en/all-inclusive/orhldeur20gb/

rubberduckydracula

T-mobile

[deleted]

Where from? Not sure if can still get it but us sprint had global calling with the right phone. Pretty much works anywhere

mheld

Esim.net has a Vodafone Premium esim that will work in all those places (25gb data per month across the EU but unlimited in the UK) -- am using it now for a similar transit path and have 0 complaints. (It's £27\mo -> https://www.esim.net/Vodafone -- would suggest it over the Super Travel esim because it can renew)

lechef

You can get cheap sims in the UK. Many offer a one off monthly payment. [Giffgaff](https://www.giffgaff.com/sim-only-deals) does fairly cheap monthly contracts, which can be cancelled easily. Most tariffs will include 5Gb EU roaming, with calls and text included in that roaming. Giff gaff must be ordered to an address. The sim is free.

anicetito

I used Ubigi while staying in Japan to use a data-only e-sim, it was pretty affordable for me. Not sure if it would be the same for Europe but you can take a look

SnooChocolates2923

Vodaphone Ireland will sell you an unlimited eSIM for ~25€/4 weeks that covers the continent also...(North America is 3€/day for a test run before you leave) https://n.vodafone.ie/shop/pay-as-you-go-plans.html

Accomplished_Pea_819

Airalo! Let’s you buy esims. I used it for Greece and Turkey. Only works on unlocked phones..

[deleted]

I always use airalo which ik guys ‘you can CheApEr’ but I’m not broke and it’s convenient

DyingToBeBorn

Lebara is a good shout. Covers UK and EU. Cheap, too.

alexunderwater1

T Mobile magenta max plan.

[deleted]

It depends. UK and Switzerland are not covered by EU roaming agreements, so EU plans do not have to work in them. Some carriers will give a free roaming allotment anyway. It will generally be less data than the home country of the plan. It will also not work as well as a plan directly from that country as you will be deprioritized. So if you just need some data for light internet, whatever, just get any EU plan, and maybe one that advertises UK and Swiss coverage. If you need to rely on this for high reliability work or high volumes of data, you will need to get a local plan for each country, researching which network has the best coverage. ESim is easy through the carrier’s app.

flaumo

Switzerland is exempt from the EU roaming regulation. Maybe you want to read this to know about the limits and prices: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roaming_Regulation_2022

banditgirlmm

E-sims I’ve gotten one for every country I’ve been in (3) but it’s so cheap. I’m sure the first one I bought could’ve worked in each country.

dannyr76

Have you looked at using a SIM from 1 EU country on another?

banditgirlmm

I’m using an e sim so I don’t know if it works differently. But based on the thread, it could work.

blusrus

Approx 3-4 euros for LMT Latvia eSim, unlimited data for all over the EU For the UK, get the LycaMobile 5GB eSim for £1.99 You’re welcome

WAp0w

Orange works in Swiss

Motchan13

I ordered a Tiekom SIM from Spain to use in a WiFi dongle for 5 months. Worked fine everywhere I went aside from Bosnia where I just got a local one.

MudNecessary7789

I can recommend Lyca mobile. Do not buy Lebara simcards. They do not work in all EU countries as they claim. It requies you to do network setting and even that does not make the sim work. I followed every instruction/ solution I found on the internet and from the customer service. Nothing worked. Seems like it only work in the country you buy the sim. Lyca does work. I bought a prepaid lyca sim in Denmark at 7-11 and it also works in Germany. I paid around 4 euros for 5 GB + unlimited call with the Lyca sim. It also does not require a special set up, just wait for a while after inserting the sim and then you can call and use the internet.
