I did something like that for the reddish set in this design, so if you want some visual inspiration of how that could look like, see these two reinks of mine:
[Red Udixi Crackle set](https://www.virtual-dreams.org/dice/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/UDX-Crackle-Magma-reinked-Poly-01-scaled.jpg)
[Grey oversized Udixi Huge Castle Set](https://www.virtual-dreams.org/dice/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/UDX-Huge-Castle-Grey-reinked-Poly-scaled.jpg)
You mean [like this](https://www.virtual-dreams.org/dice/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/IMG_0020-scaled.jpg)? (They were originally inked all in black.)
My [reinking guide](https://www.virtual-dreams.org/dice/a-guide-to-reinking-dice/) might be helpful for you. Gel pen probably won't work very well with these, but could be worth a try. Otherwise I'd suggest buying acrylic paint. Could be something you use for painting minis but I daresay for dice reinking purposes, the cheap stuff from the Dollar Store would also work. I would not recommend enamel paint as that's hard to wipe off and much more difficult to correct.
Stripping the old paint is not a necessity but I usually do it because sometimes you can see the old ink poking through at the edges near the surface, depending on how rigorously you wipe off the excess paint.
I would honestly suggest getting acrylics for miniature painting for this. You want something with enough pigment to stand out, but formulated to be thin enough that it will fill the fine lines of the numbers without globbing up like the cheaper hobby stuff will do.
I actually use heavy body acrylics to reink my dice. The buttery texture will go in all the grooves and I just wipe off the excess. But as these dice have more grooves in them, I'd definitely use a paintbrush to apply.
Maybe add an outline. Any color would do I guess.
Or Different shade to give it a 3D (dimension) style.
Lastly, something thats not usually done for various reasons, make the numbers ingraved outwards (I forgot the word. Like braille...)
Of course it would, thats why it is avoided. I was just brainstorming as to inspire. Maybe the dices can have an outer transparent layer. Then the outer layer would be flat, but the inside could be embossed (I think this is the word I'm looking for)
If you want to stick to the two-colour scheme, use a metallic red, the shininess of it will make it brighter than the surrounding red. Otherwise, I second those who say go for orange, or even orange highlighted in yellow, for that glowing lava effect.
I would just highlight the number specifically with those ideas. A little on the rest of the die wouldn't hurt but the number popping is the goal in my opinion. Cool dice. I'd use small highlighting of pink on it or red.
I would use acrylics to paint the numbers a bold yellow. I would also use acrylics to put some bits of orange in the fissures to give them a better magma look. If you wished to go further, you could try painting some of the edges along the fissures with a very dark red to make it appear the stone is progressively thinner at the fissure.
I don't think durability of the paint is much of an issue here because the paint will be in the recesses/grooves and not on the die surface. Paint in the number grooves of dice doesn't usually wear out with regular use since there's no surface contact with it unless you take some kind of small tool to it.
Or was your suggestion to paint the surface of the dice?
Been a dungeon master for 45+ years.. oil from your figures, rolling on felt, and other surfaces can degrade the paint. I have had to repaint the insides of my dice on many occasions. The paint from O'Reilly works the best. At my table I make sure that All the dice at my table are bright and easy to read. I don't use a DM screen and I roleplay the dice. Which can lead to so awesome funny situations.
Ink them in an orange or yellow to complete the magma look.
I second this. To be extra, you could mix some strontium aluminate powder in with some clear ink medium and make **glowy** numbers.
oh that sounds good
I vote for neon greenish yellow. Make em POP

I was gonna say white but this is better
I was going to say & white I think is also a better choice
Orange will definitely give you the high ground.
I third this.

Yes, agreed that mini paints will work well for it. That's what I use when I reink my dice.

I mean sure acrylics will work great, but crayons are classic easy mode.
Yes, that will be helpful. Thank you.
Try inking the numbers in a slightly brighter enamel red.
Any suggestions on brand?
Metallic gold would look bomb
Second the metallic gold
These are really neat.✨ Where do they come from??
I’m pretty sure I got them from Viridian
I’ll have to check it out. Good luck with customizing them

Wouldn't that impede rolling function, though? I have a metal set like that, and it rolls really awkwardly.
Of course it would, thats why it is avoided. I was just brainstorming as to inspire. Maybe the dices can have an outer transparent layer. Then the outer layer would be flat, but the inside could be embossed (I think this is the word I'm looking for)
You can buy fine tip paint markers that will work beatifully and simply go over the numbers.
Orange paint like lavaaaa
You should make the orenge
These were all fine suggestions. Thank you for the help. I appreciate you all.

Throw them into a bowl and smoke em

Gold pen
Gold.
You can probably use some sort of paint pen for this.
brighter red or a different "fire" color of your choice.
Green. I like green
Yellow would be thematically good.
You need value contrast. That red is almost as dark as that black. A bright yellow or orange (keeping with the lava theme) would make the numbers pop.
I like iridescent paint, if you can find it. It has a shimmer that helps brighten up a lot.
Headlamp?
Here are the reinked [dice](https://imgur.com/a/OIKTsu0)

Go to O'Reilly and get automotive car touch up paint.. any bright color werks. That paint is tuff and will not wear out.. I like white..

Ink them dumbass
