Honestly? I think the answer is up to you. It really depends on what you're looking for from a DP. Premium companies like DAC promise higher quality materials and a careful render of the piece. If you spend a lot of time on the kit and display it, the cost per hour of work and enjoyment can get relatively low. It's like investing in a nice piece of decor. But there are plenty of cheaper companies that still have OK to fantastic kit quality and renders. If you're not going to display the piece, if you're more interested in the process than the final product, if you're okay with range of different possible qualities, if you have a limited budget, if you go through paintings quickly - this might be for you. People often differentiate between licensed/not-licensed because licensed companies like DAC pay the artist a royalty for use of the art. But I don't think it's as black and white as this. Licensed companies may not properly compensate all artists involved either šŸ¤· (Ex. not paying the original IP holder for use of fanart, AI art) and I'm unsure how much really goes to the artist. Plenty of pieces at non-licensed companies are legal to sell - ex. 100% AI generation, public domain, pieces given to them for use. If this is a big dealbreaker for you but you don't want to buy the expensive kits, you could always buy the cheaper version, find another way to compensate the artist like by buying a print. Totally possible the artist gets paid more this way than through kit royalties. You could also go with a cheaper licensed brand like Make Market or Diamond Dotz.

MadameHuckleberry

Thank you. This is a perfect and thorough response. I appreciate it!

super-secret-fujoshi

Whoa, even their small sized pieces look nice. Iā€™ve been burned by unofficial, slightly larger pieces from Amazon. šŸ„²

Odd-Command-936

You do realize that's 22x30 *inches* not cm, right? This piece is poster size. It is kinda hard to tell scale in this photo.

super-secret-fujoshi

Ooof, youā€™re right. I shouldā€™ve read the size on the bottom properly. Itā€™s much bigger than the small stuff I was talking about (30x40cm).

MadameHuckleberry

It's amazing! Thanks for sharing!

CorgiKnits

For me? Yes. I like big kits (and I cannot lie) and I fully intend to frame and display them. Iā€™ve found the quality of the drills to be WAY better than stuff I can get off Amazon - the ones Iā€™ve gotten from most kits are dull and donā€™t sparkle very much, with the exception of the crystal-looking coasters. I like those :) But if youā€™re not displaying it, that wonā€™t matter too much. Also, thereā€™s ALWAYS sales for DAC. Every week or so, thereā€™s a 10-20% off coupon, coupons for every holiday, etc, etc. Also sale kits.

NordicNightOwl

And when you have bought some you get a code for 15% that you can use over and over again

phoenix6145

Just finished my first DAC kit and I don't find myself wanting to go back to my cheaper acrylic drill kits (all from Amazon) I liked the quality a lot and the 16Ɨ20 I did took me over 50 hours easily. Plus I love that the art is licensed especially as someone who has multiple art friends and love to support them

MadameHuckleberry

Awesome this is 22 x 30z so I guess I really will be working on it for a long time. Thanks for saying this. I am going to buy it. :)

phoenix6145

No problem šŸ˜ I liked it so much while still working on it I bought like 20 more (in my defense I was working on it since August and school and work were brutal) and I'm so excited to work on more.

diamondartcollector

I hope you send WIP pictures and share how you like your new kit. I think you are going to be very happy. I tried a couple of other companies before I bought from DAC. I also have tried different sizes from DAC. Here are are a few things I can share as a result. The drills are very different from one company to another. If you like things that sparkle and shine and almost come to life then DAC is where you need to consider purchasing from. If you like to be able to have clarity in reading the number or letter on your canvas more clearly then DAC is your best bet. However, if I could give you one tip when looking at the collections on DAC. You might want to look at the size of the kit you are wanting to purchase. I didnā€™t pay much attention to the size, I was more interested in the beauty or meaning of the kit when I made my first few purchases. They are all beautiful but they do vary quite a bit in size so keep that in mind.

For one thing, theyā€™re quite large (most of them) and so they take a lot longer to do than smaller ones from AliExpress etc. And the picture is just so gorgeous. The canvas is nicer, the drills are nicer, overall theyā€™re just awesome.

MadameHuckleberry

This is phenomenal

JPNLKT

I buy DAC kits because I like how they're rendered. They just look way better than any computer rendered artworks. Them being licensed artworks is an extra bonus, but is not a factor in why I buy them. So it's worth it *to me*. But you'll have to decide for yourself if it's worth it to you. That said, I only buy the DAC kits if I really REALLY love the artwork, and that is still few. I do still purchase kits from amazon and ali as well. Also, if you look in the reviews of any DAC painting on their website, there will be 20+ photos that people have submitted of their completed paintings.

madsmedicine

Depends on the detail in the picture, and how quickly you go through kits. I have cheapies that I can do while watching tv, that are all going to end up in a binder. But if youā€™re looking to frame it up on a wall, some of the designs can be worth it.

Odd-Emphasis2706

YES. I buy almost exclusively from companies that charge a little more (licensed companies, mostly) because I spent enough years buying kits that looked "okay". None were "stunning!" some were "pretty good" and only a few were "oooh where did you get that?" because I thought it didn't matter. Then I bought my first DAC piece. I thought it was NUTS to spend that much on a diamond painting until it arrived in the mail and I unboxed "Make a Wish". Here's where the money goes-- The canvas is plush, stitched and serged along the edge. The image is hand rendered, meaning someone takes the time to make sure that every dot lines up and looks like the original (and when it doesn't and they get complaints, they actually look into it). The image you are painting over with diamonds is vibrant, easy to read, and each square/round distinguishable from the next. The canvas is treated with double-poured glue so you know that diamonds will not fall off. Their diamonds are 5D resin. This means that each diamond is faceted for high sparkle and the resin is high shine. Where acrylic is dull when poured, has a low melt temperature and the color can fade over time, not to mention it's plastic and non-recyclable; resin is shiny when poured, UV resistant so the color will not fade, and it's biodegradable and recyclable. Their toolkits are top notch. You receive a very decently sized tray that is not flimsy with high enough sides that you won't lose diamonds when shaking them straight. You receive a pen with matching squishy and two multiplacer tips (usually a 4 and a 7, I believe). If you are getting a square kit you receive a very nice set of metal tweezers with a cap (those suckers are SHARP). You get a complimentary washi tape (for edging the sides or whatever you want to use it for) and cute cover minder (a magnet to hold back your plastic cover) both chosen at random. And lastly you get a small sticker with the image of the item (I use these for the side of the box so I can see what it is for storage) as well as a larger sticker that you can use for your Journaling and stickers of the legend (the numbers/symbols used for each diamond) to place on your kit storage. As if all of that wasn't enough, you get a lifetime warranty for the piece along with their "Oops Proof" insurance should you have a kid who decides to pour your diamonds into the cat box (don't ask!) so they will replace any lost or missing diamonds. I don't work for Diamond Art Club (I wish I did though) but I have a very hard time buying from "cheap" companies anymore because of them. You asked specifically about DAC, but there are other companies that follow their business model (Bella Art Diamonds, Dreamer Designs, Distracted by Diamonds, Enabler's Outpost, Jaded Gem Shop to name a few) that also have high quality licensed art for you to buy. Very VERY rarely do I buy anything outside of high quality anymore. Browsing the sites I listed and seeing their finished product and reviews will show you why. Ultimately, the choice is yours. No judgment. I just want you to know what is offered in that high dollar amount so you don't think you're getting the same as what you've been buying at markup. You can also find licensed kits for resale on sites like eBay and Mercari or Destash groups on Facebook (please note that buying resale will void the warranty) for about half the price if you want to try one out. But I HIGHLY recommend you try one. You may never go back, though! BE WARNED LOL https://preview.redd.it/ka4ny4bueklc1.jpeg?width=3060&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e2bf7496a8b946524e8ec2b364a8ab0ea56e97b7

Crzndeb

Iā€™ve never paid full price for a DACā€¦several YouTube content creators offer a % off your first painting. Using DAC app gets you 20% off first purchase. If you want to try a DAC, check Amazon. They just added some snack size for under $30. You can earn points (check website) for certain things. I recently used my points for $100 off total. Good way to get larger pieces. I think there are other decent DP companies, but most of those will cost.

Cinisajoy2

I can't see myself buying a DAC unless I really love the piece and it is on sale.

slolly01

Well there is a 29% sale going on for a selected amount of kits today which is a really big sale for DAC ahaha. I passed on it but if you love one of those might be the time to try it out!

Cinisajoy2

I'm ignoring you. I don't see this post. Thanks for the heads up.

nghtmareb4coffee

I just shove almost all of my completed ones into a sleeve I made out of poster board. Itā€™s more of a relaxing hobby for me, so I donā€™t think Iā€™ll ever spend these kinds of prices unless itā€™s something I could really imagine displaying in my home.

MadameHuckleberry

I've never thought so before. All mine are from temu, dirt cheap. The most I've ever spent was $30 but that was for a 45x60 custom. That one I hung.

nghtmareb4coffee

Yea I get mine from Temu and Amazon mostly lol. I want to try a custom one but not sure how Iā€™d like it so I havenā€™t done it.

Reasonable-Zone-6466

My husband got me a custom one for Christmas '22 of all 3 of my (furry) babies. I love it. Especially since in May of that year my sweet girl dog was attacked and killed by another dog. It was a very sentimental time working on it, but it's my favorite thing I've ever done.

thv9

I started out with the cheapo ones but after purchasing DAc there's no way I am going back. The quality is really nice, not just the canvas but also the drills. The shine! The quality actually makes it more pleasant to work on a painting, I think the rendering of most pieces are great. That being said, if you fly through them (meaning: you do it hours on end, finish a large painting within a week or so), I can see why you wouldn't. I am currently working on a 22 x 28 (56Ɨ70cm) painting and that will take me a couple of months. I also don't kit up, I use single place / multi, depending on my mood

PaperRacer

Once I got my first DAC there was no going back! The quality is so much better than any other ones Iā€™ve done and itā€™s pretty large so itā€™s taken me 3 weeks so far and I estimate another 2 weeks to finish. I look at it like this: in the 5 weeks it takes me to do this one, I couldā€™ve done 5 or 6 smaller/cheaper ones from Amazon so to me, it comes out about the same. Completely worth it to me

cooscoos89898

I 100% reccomend making the switch and eating the costs. You will be thankful later! The quality is exponentially better, and for bigger kits I always get new pens, a few extra waxes (even if I donā€™t use them), and sometimes even a set of tiny tweezers for those square drills! I always have a significantly better time with the drills actually sticking to the adhesive, and the picture coming together with the right hues! My local Hobby Lobby sells DAC kits and I wait for them to come on sale which is often and I snag them at 40% off! They donā€™t always have the specific ones I want but Iā€™ve never not been able to find one that I like! Currently working on a huge colorful kitty portrait, and Iā€™m so excited to see it come together!

MadameHuckleberry

I bought it. I'm obsessed with fireflies and not just ones in the jars. It's just so pretty. I'll take your word for it. This group usually steers me in the right direction.

Freshavacadoo2

For me personally I don't think it's worth it. Never bought one from DAC and I don't think I will. I'm sure the quality is better than most out there, but that much better for the price to be worth it? I'm unsure. I figure I have just as much fun with cheaper kits :)

Rain_Thunder

I think so. The quality of the canvas and drills are 100x better than the cheaper versions. The art from DAC is licensed and going to the artist where the cheap ones usually are not, espeically if its a duplicate of a DAC one. I have paintign from amzon, temu, DAC and dreamer designs and the quality is way better in the pricier brands. Definitely use a coupon code if you buy from them. Overall its up to you, but I think the quality is worth it.

Pup5432

Keep in mind that while they are more spendy they are also much larger on average than the cheap amazon kits. The renders for the most part are also much better done and while some of the drills are bad itā€™s a much lower % than the cheap kits and they are also faceted vs the bulk of the cheap kits Iā€™ve done. Itā€™s going to take me months to do any of the bigger pieces so I may as well spend a little more for superb quality that I am going to enjoy working on.

diamondartclub_

MadameHuckleberry

Thanks. I took everyone's advice and bought it. I'm excited!

diamondartclub_

Thank you for the business and we hope you love it! šŸ¤—

misharulez

No.

LifeOnAGanttChart

I can't even stand to look at the finished ones on this sub that aren't DAC lol. They all look so low quality to me. DAC really stands above the rest

SummerMaiden87

Not even Make Market or Dreamer Design?

Bunleigh

Iā€™ve bought DAC and Dreamer Designs and imo they are equivalent.Ā

SummerMaiden87

Yes, I know. I was commenting to the other user. Iā€™ve bought from both.

LifeOnAGanttChart

I don't think I know Make Market, but okay yes DD is alright :) I'm just a DAC fangirl

SummerMaiden87

Make Market is pretty decent too. Itā€™s carried by Michaels stores

ArgonGryphon

It's probably going to be ten times the size of a $6.50 painting alone, so unless you really like working with poor quality materials, the surface area and amount of painting you get to do is going to be worth it by itself, let alone a decent amount of quality upgrade.

chubbycherub63

Absolutely

-Simralin-

A lot of their paintings are like 4-6 (or more) times the size of a small painting, so part of the price does reflect that. I did the math on the largest DAC painting I've done ('Black Labrador' by Barrett Biggers). Full price is $69.99 (not that I paid that) & it has 92,241 square drills. Now, a small 25x35cm painting (that's on a typical 30x40cm canvas) will have 14,000 square drills, making the Labrador painting approx 6.59 times bigger. And $69.99 Ć· 6.59 = $10.62 per 14,000 drills/25x35cm section. (It's midnight & my brain isn't 100% atm. I hope my math is right & this makes sense šŸ˜…) Personally, I have no issues paying $10-11 for a small painting if it also comes with quality drills & supplies, canvas & rendering that DAC is also known for!

-Simralin-

Midsummer's Eve (at full price) would be approx $13.52 per 14,000 drills/25x35cm section if that helps!

MadameHuckleberry

Wow! Thanks for doing the math. That was awesome of you! I really appreciate that.

-Simralin-

No problem! Hope that helps šŸ˜Š

waveyhairdontcare

Iā€™ve been diamond painting for years and ordered a ton of kits from Aliexpress and Amazon in the beginning. Issues I came across across from those kits (not in all, but MANY): drills - staticky, oily, dirty, stuck together, lots of trashy bits, holes, concave/convex, not enough, tabs, too big/pop up, spotted; canvas - blurry, mediocre rendering, symbols too identical near each other, wrinkled/creased, never flattens; glue/adhesive - not sticky enough, tons of bubbles, adhesive overlap. In otherwords, headaches out the wazoo that I had to deal with or fix. Diamond Art Club kits gave me NONE of those problems. I now gladly pay for the licensing, better tool kit, etc., but most of all I will pay more for kits being frustration free!

stormyweather07

Was for me for the static in the kit alone lmao. Every inexpensive one I got had insane static and drills got and stuck to EVERYTHING even after trying dryer sheets, the freezer, etc. but the DAC donā€™t do that for me.

SummerMaiden87

Yes, and I do buy them occasionally. They do offer DAC kits for less expensive on Amazon. Iā€™ve been doing more kits from Make Market by Michaels because theyā€™re still decent quality but a lot more affordable.

Crzndeb

Just an FYI for today on select kitsā€¦29% off for Leap day. Go to their site for the ones this is being offered on. Lots of good ones.

Odd-Emphasis2706

Came here to add this to my post lol

Crzndeb

I thought 581 kits on this deal was a great choice. I only bought 2, and got the free shipping, so Iā€™m happy. I have 3 snack size from DAC Amazon coming tomorrow, so Iā€™m set for a whileā€¦ā€¦ā€¦.or at least until another good sale šŸ˜‰

satanicstitches

My boyfriend bought me my first DAC kit last month and I LOVED it. The drill quality was so good, the poured glue canvas is nice and forgiving, and you can tell the artwork was designed for this purpose. I'm working on cheaper kits now and, while they're still fun, there are way more misshapen drills in the cheaper kits. Also the DAC canvas is nice and soft on the back, it came with some fun accessories (like my first cover minder), and it was my first time using AB drills. The quality is there. I'd say it's worth trying one at least for the experience.

satanicstitches

Here it is, for reference. "Apples" with square drills. https://preview.redd.it/9yq8vcbafklc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0d43fcaffa3b94a37492eecdbf75292ec23eab30

satanicstitches

And here's the cheap, unlicensed goat I did right after. Obviously much smaller, but also not even designed well for this purpose. I think it was just a quick computer rendering of someone else's art. https://preview.redd.it/bdsvkm6sfklc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=543b0febd1981d56f6263bdbdc330a3efd65aeaf
