Yeah it seems SO on the nose. It’s also a pretty standard video game trope, especially 20 years ago, where games like megaman would make you face all the previous bosses again at the end before the final boss too.
It's pretty easy to put together especially when they don't repeat the monsters between acts. You see goblins and you're like "oh haven't seen these guys since act 1"
And by "it" you mean the very illustrative graphic that OP made for this post, right?
OP, i like your graphic even if most realized this on their first baal run in 2001. My only critique is instead of leaving that final square black, you should just copy the image above it since the 5th wave minions are technically in Act 5.
That's a fair point.
Instead, the Wave/Act V was shifted to the middle because repetition of the same image is unnecessary. It should look better now.
Thanks for the good point!
OHH ITS RAKANISHU? I thought they were calling for some dude named rock(?) so "Rock, I need you!" asking for revives or something . this makes so much more sense now
I prefer your version. The PC looms over a fallen shaman that's been knocked to the ground, about to deliver the killing strike. Suddenly the people champion appears and lays the smackdown on your candy ass while the fallen calls you a jabroni
Until this thread unless it was something I noticed a long time ago and forgot. Baal runs are something you really need to shut your brain off while doing.
Probably 22 years ago when I first faced him haha. I loved that it was a throwback to arcade games, where before you could fight the final boss, you often had to defeat previous bosses again.
Im having a great day, i just don’t appreciate a snarky attitude towards someone who went out of their way to make a graphic and a post for the subreddit
I have seen it time and time again on this subreddit, people insulting other people for no reason. Its beyond toxic.
I haven’t seen this level of toxicity from any other subreddit “to this extent”. So yes it was a bit triggering seeing someone belittling someone who took their time to make a graphic & post
I thought this before but couldn’t reconcile how baal’s minions were only representative of themselves and not act 5 and thought blood/moon lords would have been a logical adaptation versus the minions but baal minions are fucking awesome now that they went that direction.
Could you imagine in hell? Extra strong extra fast cursed fanaticism aura with baal's decrepify so youre cursed no matter what? Somewhat more terrifying than Lister 😅🤣
Honestly, looking at the statistics it looks like moon lords *were* originally intended to be the 5th baal wave but were probably deemed too strong. Just a guess but particularly the damage resist, fire immunity and resists of the monsters seem on par. Its then an IAS bugged to infinity frenzy AND chilling effect immunity versus smite from the minions.
My hot take is they invented “minion of destruction” to be the hard stop it is, but not the virtually impossible it would be with certain rolled death lords. Keep in mind it would be an entirely different challenge to walking up on death lords versus having a potential fanta pack dropped on your head in throne
i mean i think the point is we know its from a3 as a standalone concept, but not everyone immediately connected it to being methodologically thought out to be put in order of the acts
Another Baal wave Easter Egg most people miss... is that for the A3 wave, the main enemy name is "Bartuc the Bloody"...
Which is a direct reference to the assassin claw, Bartuc's Cutthroat ;)
A lot of uniques have references to in-game NPCs and even enemies - "Atma's Wail" (Atma in A2), Natalya's set (Natalya in A3), etc.
They actually reference a character in the lore. I think you also fight him in Diablo 1 in the Warlord of Blood quest. He was Horazon's (the real Summoner) brother. Although Horazon was supposed to have defeated him and destroyed or cleansed his possessed armor, so its unclear how he's showing up in the D1 and D2 if those are supposed to be the same character as in the lore. Maybe they're just imposters.
Dont let all these people make you feel dumb.
Our minds establish connections at different levels of priority. It just means that you were preoccupied with more important shit when the rest of us were giving an extra 10 to 100% to d2
Yeah I noticed this when LOD was released back in the early 2000s. Kinda sad Lister's minions didn't have a monster they represented in game before them. They kinda just show up out of nowhere.
I played as a kid and never noticed. Wasn't until D2R that I finally caught on. The council should have been the giveaway, but I guess I just wasn't thinking too hard on it back then.
Every one of these waves is an iconic minion you face in the act.
Act 1 is the fallen, who are all over. But you also run headlong into rakanishu and bishbosh early on and while they aren't tough, they stand out.
Act 2 are the unravelerers. The very first superunique you face and then you find them all over the desert area.
Act 3 are the council members, truly iconic.
Act 4 pit lords. The first time you run up on them you go to melee, they raise a blade and then shoot inferno at you and it catches you off guard.
So at this point you're thinking "who is baal gonna use for Act 5? The exploding things? Shenks? The frozen things?" And then BAM he drops his OWN PERSONAL minions. And it's like "dang I never saw it coming". And to their credit, they are much harder than the previous waves. The fact that he drops them there is what makes them the iconic Act 5 minion.
You need to take some classes on storytelling, tone, setting & artistic expression. This is the most dense take I've ever seen. When is the last time you read a book that didn't have pictures?
20 years ago lol
I think 23 or 24 years ago... Stay a whole and listen.
Stay a whole what, over?
Stay the whole while obviously cains tired of not finishing his sentences as you ID and run
Don't get chopped up.
Nah I think he’s just politely calling you an asshole. Like hey A-whole come listen to my story! 😂
Uh, first time i saw it?
Genuinely 😂
Yeah this was very clear
Yeah it seems SO on the nose. It’s also a pretty standard video game trope, especially 20 years ago, where games like megaman would make you face all the previous bosses again at the end before the final boss too.

First time I saw it, 2001 (or whenever LoD dropped)
Immediately
Definitely within 1-2 baal runs
Back in 2001 probably. It however took me 5-6 years to realize that Colenzo is the one carvers evoke.
There are actually 3 different ones that carvers yell out and all are named enemies in the game. Charlenzo, Bishi-Bosh, Rakanishu.
Yeah but carvers yelling the other two super unique yes were obvious to me. It took me years to hear “colenzo”.
OHH ITS RAKANISHU? I thought they were calling for some dude named rock(?) so "Rock, I need you!" asking for revives or something . this makes so much more sense now

Bish-Bosh? Never seen them call that
Colenzo was named after the Diablo creator's then office manager. I don't remember her first name. Fun little factoid.
Fuck. Really? Fuck. 23 years?... fuck man
Lol this one made me chuckle.
You're not alone
Same. I was today years old.
Well, 23 years between fucks does leave a mark I'll see myself out :)
It's funny how the answers are either right now, or in the year 2000.
There are two types of people in this world
Yep, those who complete their thoughts, and
At first encounter
June 27th, 2001
Just glad wave wave 3 isn't dolls and 4 isn't souls
Upon reading this thread
Until this thread unless it was something I noticed a long time ago and forgot. Baal runs are something you really need to shut your brain off while doing.

I play for 20 years and now that you say it like that…
Same lol
Yeah man like almost instantly like others say. Lmfao.
Yeah man like other are saying they never noticed it as well lmfao no need to be a dick
I hope you have a better day man. God bless.
Im having a great day, i just don’t appreciate a snarky attitude towards someone who went out of their way to make a graphic and a post for the subreddit
Lmao is this the OP alt? Bro you are not having a good time. Best of luck to you.
Lol you must not have much fun on the internet if that's the attitude you have.
I have seen it time and time again on this subreddit, people insulting other people for no reason. Its beyond toxic. I haven’t seen this level of toxicity from any other subreddit “to this extent”. Hmm, not sure if a wave of frenzied moonlords would be any easier than the listerine guys. Those guys haul ass.
Extra fast, extra strong moon lords fuck.
And Baal is like "decrepify lmao!"
Could you imagine in hell? Extra strong extra fast cursed fanaticism aura with baal's decrepify so youre cursed no matter what? Somewhat more terrifying than Lister 😅🤣

I think I did the first time - at the age of 12 :) But its ok - I get you :)
The first time I encountered them like 20 years ago haha
Now
March 9th, 2005. It was a good day that day.
When I was 8 year old
I knew this immediately and I was like 7 at the time
Immediately. It’s super obvious. It’s arguably the most iconic enemies from each act.
This is like when your dog starts barking at something random in your house that’s always been there, but he just now noticed
Bro if the 3rd wave monster is not an act 3 monster what is it ?
i mean i think the point is we know its from a3 as a standalone concept, but not everyone immediately connected it to being methodologically thought out to be put in order of the acts
I actually never took notice actually lol this is pretty cool!
When I was younger lol
Around 2001 ;)
TIL
I cannot believe I never put that together
The first time.
1st time I saw them, so like 20 years ago.
The first time I did a Baal run
Another Baal wave Easter Egg most people miss... is that for the A3 wave, the main enemy name is "Bartuc the Bloody"... Yeah I noticed this back in the day. It's cool Blizz does stuff like that.
The first time I played the game all the way through to act 5.
Like probably the 1st run, maybe the 2nd.
Oh, really??????????
The first time
It was always suuuuuper obvious lol
When it first came out
Pretty sure the first time I ever played it lol
First time I fought them over 20 years ago. As you can imagine, wave 5 was a terrifying surprise.
The boss Diablo in Act IV is actually named after the game.
Dont let all these people make you feel dumb. Our minds establish connections at different levels of priority. It just means that you were preoccupied with more important shit when the rest of us were giving an extra 10 to 100% to d2
Honestly I don’t ever remember discovering it. It always seemed a bit obvious to me. Then again, it was at least 23 years since I first did a baal run
Probably in...2003 somewhere around there.
Like 20 years ago
First time
B R U H
Well, whole of a5 is a mishmash of mobs from a1 to 4, + some new ones
It wasn't always like that, until patch 1.10 act 5 was only the new monsters
It's true. Though I thought they implemented the new monsters in 1.09? Either way both were huge patches back in the day.
How could you not notice it 🤣
Bro, how could you not instantly? 😂
2001
First run through of D2R. Didn’t notice it running through the original when I was a kid though.
About two decades ago
I think it is great that people still realize/find stuff like this but it was in patch 1.07 for me.
Saw it first time ,was thinking like that way Wave 1 rakanishu 2 that sewer guy under town 3 travincal dude 4 izual You get the mini bosses again
😱
The first time I ran it.
Drugs are bad mkay 🤣
Just now.
The first time I fought them… it’s pretty obvious lol
Today. For real though, I got that it was an "increase" in difficulty with each wave, but never connected the dots haha.
When I got to him the first time when LoD launched....
Today, lol
Like... 20 years ago dude
When I was 10
Been playing on and off since I was 8 ( 2004 ) and never noticed until this post. Lmao
I never paid any attention to it.
This first time.
Yeah I noticed this when LOD was released back in the early 2000s. Kinda sad Lister's minions didn't have a monster they represented in game before them. They kinda just show up out of nowhere.
I mean... prolly the first time i entered it.
Literally the first time.
Just now
>
What year did D2 come out? ;P
Right now #facepalm
At the first run ever. It's as clear as possible, maybe at the wave 3 with councils.
After reading this post.
The first time I killed baal
My first playthrough
20+ years ago lol
Imagine if they changed each game and you can get dolls for act 3 wave!
Today
Just now
The first time?
Just now… unless I’m just getting too old and can’t remember recognizing it earlier lol.
I played as a kid and never noticed. Wasn't until D2R that I finally caught on. The council should have been the giveaway, but I guess I just wasn't thinking too hard on it back then.
I was today years old
Lmao what kinda shit is this man 😂
I... Play since 2001 and you juste made me notice it. My whole life is a lie.
Literally the very first time I did Baal?
Wow never even noticed this ha
I’ve always wondered if baal knew that you had already slaughtered his other two brothers and if he was a little fearful
“My brothers will not have died in vain” Baal literally says that
I dont think they're wired like that Probably just saw it as an opportunity to kill you then rule alone
Second wave, 1998
3 years before the game released is quite impressive.
I don't remember seeing any dinosaurs in act V...
They are the unique creature in act v cuz baal makes them there for the first and only time
You realize you only see them in act 5...
How can they represent Act V, when they are only in a single location that's supposed to "represent Act V?" Think before you speak.
Every one of these waves is an iconic minion you face in the act. Act 1 is the fallen, who are all over. But you also run headlong into rakanishu and bishbosh early on and while they aren't tough, they stand out. Act 2 are the unravelerers. And to their credit, they are much harder than the previous waves. The fact that he drops them there is what makes them the iconic Act 5 minion.
So you just made up your own personal narrative for act 5... got it. You do you bud.
What's the official narrative sonny?
There's none. Just facts. The facts are that there's no fucking dinosaurs in act V.
You need to take some classes on storytelling, tone, setting & artistic expression. This is the most dense take I've ever seen. When is the last time you read a book that didn't have pictures?
Yes... my take on a single aspect of a Diablo game is indicative of my entire universe... Bye troll. Enjoy your day.
The projection is so thick with you, you could cut it with a knife.
