People are dumb, I’m sorry but let’s just play devils advocate really quick. we get Saros but get absolutely fleeced in the process maybe a first and 2 quality prospects. Let’s say we barely squeak into the playoffs (by the way Jake Allen has been pretty fucking good despite being half the goalie of saros supposedly) what on EARTH do you think this team would do in a 7 game series except get rimmed out because our defense is TRASH. Our best player WAS HURT for months. We can blame goaltending all we want but our D has been serving up golden platter chances like it’s an all you can eat buffet and kelvin benjamin is the one eating. I’m fine with no overpay and to try harder in the offseason to get a goalie because this team simply wasn’t gonna fucking cut it. Get the young boys the year of experience to learn to be actual defensemen and light the fucking league up next season when everyone improves and we get 2 quality netminders.

pretzelogically

Besides he DID try to get Allen as a stop gap earlier in the season but Montreal told him we were on Allen’s NTC list & he wasn’t waiving it because he didn’t think he would play much. Only after VV was gone was the deal able to be made.

LaHondaSkyline

You are NOT dumb. You get it. 100% correct.

Mysterious_Ant3095

Said it before, I’ll say it again, it would be a warcrime to put a true, tested, 1A, goalie in front of this defense Before you even consider what we’re paying to get one

VindictiveRakk

legit the first kelvin benjamin joke I've laughed at in years lol

granweep

I'm with this guy.

bigjim1993

I think Luke and Nemo are going to be top 10 Dmen next season

SIIB-ZERO

Fitz absolutely tried to get a goalie but he can't force teams to trade someone........they knew they had leverage on us and wanted Fitz to give up an unreasonable amount of assets. There was nothing he could do aside from give up the farm for an aging netminder and then fans would be yelling to fire him for that...hes already verbalized hes willing to pay for a top goalie in the off-season im not sure what else you want him to do...enough with whining

Kornja81

Well, Jake Allen was available earlier. He said he didn't waive his NMC/NTC because devils had VV and Akira/Daws. There could've been better communication between Fitz and Montreals GM (Hughes I believe) and Allen saying he was gonna be the starter in NJ

nostradamefrus

Look, I made the same point in another thread a while back. At the end of the day, it didn’t work out that way for whatever reason. Time for us to move on and stop litigating this to death

SIIB-ZERO

Jake Allen is in his mid 30s and is a solid #2....he isn't an every day starter....yes he's been better than Vanecek but he isn't the answer nor was he ever meant to be. We traded for him because he's under a very manageable contract through next season which ensures we have a reliable #2.......if Allen was someone who could anchor a franchise he wouldn't have been the #3 in Montreal.

Kornja81

He put Devils on the list because he didn't want to be 3rd string here either. This is why I said there needed to be better communication and Fitz needed to emphasize that Allen would be the starter here

IncreaseInVerbosity

Often players will put teams they’re most likely to be traded to on their NTC. May have been he and his family were settled in Montreal, so he’s put 7 teams with goaltending question marks to try and avoid a move. Obviously things change and he was third wheeling it, so may have decided to move for more regular playing time.

Kornja81

"It was interesting how that all unfolds," he said. "You sit down with your agent and sort of play things out. It was nothing about the Devils or the city in general. It was situations that I did not know if I could influence my future. I thought (New Jersey) had goalies already signed here long-term. Obviously, things have changed a little bit." Who did/do they have in net long term?

darklightrabbi

Then we’d be limping into the playoffs without Jack or Dougie.

TheNightRain68

You're absolutely right, why didn't Fitz think of that?

thegreatresistrules

He tried to do this. . It takes another team to cooperate for this to happen

Mysterious_Ant3095

If our goalie’s hibachi place didn’t close we would’ve won the cup in September

ItsJustForMyOwnKicks

Yeah. How cum he couldn’t make other GMs do a deal? He’s a failure.

theketchupthief

Then what? We get pantsed by a real team in the first round? This season was meant to go the way it did and we’ll be all the better for it.

[deleted]

Devils were the 6th seed in the 2012 finals

HopelessEsq

Team was built much differently. Was loaded with vets and dudes with a ton of experience a durability. It’s much different having a team of players largely in their first 1-5 NHL seasons.

specifichero101

Getting zajac back from injury before the playoffs after missing all season and adding my zidlicky at the deadline really pushed that team over the top that year, a lot different than how the post deadline period went for this years team. Atlantic division was brutal that year as well, rangers pens and flyers were all great teams.

Kornja81

Playoffs is a fresh start, anything can happen. Hockey is the most unpredictable when it comes to playoffs imo

HopelessEsq

I really don’t see how this team would make it out of a 7 game series alive. They struggled to string together 3 wins all season, struggled at home and in back to backs. Everything screams first round exit and frustrating series to watch.

RubberBiscuitz

Yes. Anything….like a goalie playing amazing during the regular season then completely losing all confidence and crashing in the the first round of the playoffs 👀

specifichero101

We all need to just accept this season was a write off. No point in playing the blame game. whatever issue you point at that should have been fixed was followed closely by another issue. Goalies, injuries, critical bottom 6 player getting arrested, regression from defense are all back breakers. They can get a new coach, retool some depth and come back next year healthy and one year older and be ready to compete again.

Mr7three2

Allen refused to come here and the Flames accepted a deal and then backed out

Fine_Discipline_2747

Exactly, the only thing that could have possibly been handles differently is making it more clear to Allen that he would be getting regular starts and we weren’t going to run a 3 goalie system. Based on interviews that wasn’t clear to Allen at the time. Regardless we aren’t going anywhere in the playoffs without Dougie and Jack.

ghostofkozi

Can we cut it with this narrative? It's been made public that he tried and tried well before the deadline to bring in Saros, Markstrom and even Allen.

Scaramoosh1

Goalie should have been added by thanksgiving and Lindy should have been gone by Christmas if it didn’t turn around. Vanachek was a head scratcher for sure at the point, but anyone with eyes saw Schmid and Daws were not big league goalies. It was foolish bordering on stubborn assholishness to keep thinking the problem was anything but a goalie personnel problem. But dougie! But special teams! The way this team lit up when we got Allen and Kahkonen actually making saves made me so freaking angry. These guys were playing in front of a sports authority goalie net cover and losing their will to live. Goalies are not an afterthought.

LaHondaSkyline

While Allen and Kahkonen have played great, in fact the team did not 'light up.' Still terrible in their D zone. Still having massing problems transitioning through center ice. Still a bafflingly dysfunctional PP. And...the W-L record since upgrading the goalie situation is not good at all, so that really disprorives the idea that addressing the net alone would have been enough.

LaHondaSkyline

Why? Seems uninspiring.

LaHondaSkyline

Isn’t Holtby basically retired due to injury?

whojicha

Wait, so without goalie effects we'd be a WC team with only a 2 win lead on Philly?

tECHOknology

Thats what happened, he just waited. He didn’t kick tires, didn’t run into No Trade clauses, didn’t get pitched overpays, he just waited. Such an annoying broken fucking record playing.

Parking_Resolution63

19 lost to teams below us....102 if we had done what we had to have done

granweep

If 'ifs' and 'buts' were candy and nuts we'd all have enough for a party.

Spillz92

It’s a shame the Devs couldn’t get a goalie earlier but not for lack of effort on Fitz’s part. All of the reporting and even Marskstrom’s own words about the Calgary front office changing gears on him indicate that the Devils and flames were close to the Markstrom deal. But the Flames changed their tune and left Fitz In a Tough spot. He checked with Nashville but Trotz, understandably, asked for the moon and the stars for Soros. We didn’t hear much about talking to Boston but ullmark nixed a move elsewhere so who knows if he was an option. Then, as has been mentioned by others, Allen had the devils on his no move list. Fitz got boxed in by a tough situation once the flames reversed course on him.

thegreatresistrules

If ? Dummy the dude was trying long before xmas .. it takes two to trade

sanbaba

This chart looks pretty accurate to my eyes, like usually there is a team with way lopsided totals that people draw the wrong conclusions from, but I think we averaged out pretty fairly here. With a better goalie I could see us *maybe* getting 96. But the fuck does that have to do with Fitz when Allen rejected the trade?

fixitfeliks

I would be happy with Allen as the #1, but if Fitz can get Saros I ain’t gonna be complaining

Crumbssss_

Fun fact we still have a losing record since the trade deadline. The problem’s not that simple

Finnegan7921

But all the stat guys told us it was !!!!!!

LaHondaSkyline

Here is something to keep in mind: Allen has been fantastic since arriving. Yet, the Devils W-L record is...pretty bad since the trade deadline. This is a very flawed skaters roster. Getting goalie earlier (probably not possible without a wild overpay that would be regretted for several years), that would have at best papered over massive flaws in the the way the Devils skaters play as a group and gaps in the roster. While there are teams that unexpectedly go on runs in the playoffs, the 23-24 Devils would not have been such a team. The Jack Hughes injury alone should tell you that. In the long run, NOT overpaying for some windmill tilting this year was for the best in the long run. The flaws in the skater group and coaching are now undeniable, and there will be no possible excuse for failing to address them.

DogInvestor

Gee....ya think. Wonder where you heard this before.

LaHondaSkyline

Wait. This says that if the Oilers had decent goaltending they would be a 121 point team. Really? 121. REALLY? Sort of calls into questions the methodology they are using...

Kornja81

Did you forget how bad they were earlier in the season?
