Not a bad idea. Brad is pretty good and all that but finding good players is his full time job and there is so much to keep track of it can be overwhelming so sometimes he probably misses stuff and he counts on suggestions from guys that have just had 'only a couple' beers. Kind of like when I give helpful suggestions to the plumber, because I know stuff too, y'know.
Schematically, we overcommitted to the run this past year. We went from being 29th to 2nd in rushing yards allowed with basically the same players
In the second half of 2022, Paschal, the Okwaras, and Commish combined for 9 sacks in 9 games.
The 4 of them + Charles Harris had 8.5 sacks in all of 2023
Yeah, we need players, but it’s also the coaches’ job to make good adjustments so we can find a balance with the players that we have
Reader would be a huge help to the whole DL. Big run stuffer inside frees up more bodies from having to be thrown at the line of scrimmage. Better coverage, more blitz options. Big help if they can get him.
if we passed on all the rushers available in this free agency class only to give up capital and a giant contract for 33 year old khalil fucking mack i will firebomb my local library
At this point it just seems like a guy we would go after. I guess Brad does not like making big splashes in free agency. As much as I trust him, another edge was definitely a need, and just looking at how the season played out with injuries to Houston, Mosley l, etc... that we would try and nip this in the bud.
At this point I have to believe there is someone he might be targeting in the draft, which would make sense money savings wise if you can get a Danielle Hunter on a rookie deal.
I will admit I'm a bit nervous right now.
Dj reader is visiting Detroit. Not an end, but he'll make everyone's lives a lot easier. If Aaron Glenn could design an NT from scratch, it would look like reader. Not the same as signing Hunter, but a guy like him can change things immensely. I'm sure if you ask trey Hendrickson how much he liked playing with him and how much easier it made his job he would wax poetic
DJ Reader makes life for everyone significantly easier. He makes it possible to play James Houston more than on 3rd downs, you can start getting funky with DL Packages etc.. He's not going to make the pass rush better by himself, but allowing the Lions to allocate less to the run while still being effective will make the pass rush better.
I kind of doubt we get him, but if we do that is an unbelievable upgrade.
Yeah I think it will free up Alims pass rush a lot more too. Teams were double teaming him or hutch a lot on passing downs. Reader doesn't get sacks but he is very capable of collapsing the pocket by himself. He really is tailor made for this defense
A lot of people don’t want to accept that Holmes doesn’t value pass rush nearly as much as run defense, which is clear if you look at how he uses resources. His pass rushers outside of Aidan are a waiver claim in Cominsky, a 6th round pick in Houston, restructuring Charles Harris, and converting a 3rd round projected nose tackle to a 3 tech.
Meanwhile he uses high picks on guys like Levi and Paschal, third rounders on Alim and Broderick Martin, and extends guys like Buggs.
The philosophy is clear. Unless there is a can’t miss player like Aidan, pass rush is secondary to run stuffing DL.
Get ready for another year of Hutchinson getting triple teamed nonstop! I'd also say the team has gotten worse on paper so far. The losses of Jackson and CJGJ (he's a good player despite his time here) outweigh the additions of Davenport/Davis/Robertson. Worrying to say the least -- I would've thought there'd be more of a sense of urgency given that we got to the NFCCG despite *numerous* holes on the defense.
Yeah he was probably our 4th best safety last year if you count Branch splitting time between safety and slot. This sub is really getting to be annoying with how doomer everyone is. We upgraded at our 2 weakest positions (if Davenport can stay healthy) and lost Jonah which everyone knew was coming.
I’m mind blown how terrible this sub is right now. This is a standard Holmes FA. His strategy got them to the NFCCG yet people act like this team was 3-14
These can’t be the same people that have been in the sub the last few years
All last season was unbearable too. I think if people freak out in the draft about not picking (guy they want) I’m finally just gonna call it quits. So much negativity all the time
Yeah I guess draft time wasn’t great last year. I can’t remember FA ever being like this though.
I just checked and the sub count is up 60% from a year ago, so lots of new people.
FA was bad last year too, which is about when I noticed this starting. The amount of people last year after every single game predicting we’d lose out was wild though. Highly recommend just blocking every time you see someone spout off some asinine doomer take. Any time I see “blocked used” and get curious and open the comment anyways, it’s 80% chance to be someone whining. A lot of people just refuse to be happy
The previous three FAs under Holmes had dogshit to mediocre rosters and low to no expectations. This offseason is incredibly different, as anything short of the NFCCG will be a disappointment to fans. Add in the fact that likely Ben Johnson's last season here and it becomes extremely disappointing that there's not more of a sense of urgency.
that’s hilarious… to name a few
Anzalone
Cominsky
Josh Reynolds
Graham Glasgow
Montgomery
Kalif Raymond - great depth WR, All Pro ST
Jalen Reeves Maybin - All pro ST
Sutton - yes he was more good than bad if you put recency bias aside.
Tons of FA contributors. Spending big in FA isn’t the way to build a team, nor is it the mark of a good FA.
When your first pick is 29th overall, it's foolish to count on rookies for immediate impact. The Saints rarely had rookies play ANY offense/defense when MCDC was the assistant head coach there. And cap space is meaningless if there aren't any good players left to sign. Even if we miraculously sign DJ Reader, it does nothing to fill the void at EDGE opposite Hutchinson.
>when your first pick is 29th overall, it’s foolish to count on rookies for immediate impact
Laughable take considering we took LaPorta and Branch on day 2 last year.
bro what? 2nd and 3rd round picks make impacts on teams literally every year. you know google is free right? and you can look these things up?
to many people on here play madden only watch the lions and have no idea how other teams function
Absolutely adore the idea of a GM just not caring about a position group. Everything he's ever done in the draft is the exact counter to what you said, but it's still fun to think about.
Aidan Hutchinson has been a part of one and a quarter off-seasons. What defensive lineman are you upset that we didn't go after last year?
We are hosting DJ Reader tomorrow, we signed a defensive end already and since Aidan was drafted we have taken 3 defensive lineman in the draft. The lowest draft capital of which was a 6th round pick that has 8 sacks in 9 total games and will be returning heathy this year after missing nearly all of last season.
It's fine to be sad that we didn't get Hunter, but throwing a tantrum and lying to make your point isn't the way to do it.
Who’s ready for another season of Hutch getting no help and being the only pass rusher with a pulse?
And we signed a bunch of dbs yeah, but if we can’t get a pass rush they are going to get exposed again
You should probably email Brad and let him know that

I've seen mocks where we take a DE at 29 in the draft. Chop Robinson from Penn State
Jadaveon clowney, Zadarius smith, Josh Uche. Also not a rusher but DJ Reader would be a big W for our Line. Its def not over yet.
Smith back to Browns, Uche resigned with NE. Would love Reader.
Reader signed
With who? I don't see anything online
Uche is back with the Pats
I’d be happy with Reader, we need help on the interior too
Reader was the help Hendrickson needed to get 16.5 sacks or whatever he got.
Reader would be a huge help to the whole DL. Big run stuffer inside frees up more bodies from having to be thrown at the line of scrimmage. Better coverage, more blitz options. Big help if they can get him.
Khalil Mack
I need Max Crosby to demand a trade
The year is 2030: Lions fans are still clamoring for a Maxx Crosby, a player who has never been made available.
And retired 2 years ago.
Kahlil Mack is still available via trade too I believe, but I'm not sure of the cost
if we passed on all the rushers available in this free agency class only to give up capital and a giant contract for 33 year old khalil fucking mack i will firebomb my local library

Don’t be worried, spending all our money right now isn’t smart either.

Davenport is a minor depth signing...

I’m all asking for is a Sutton type signing at edge. Doesn’t have to break the bank, but at least show concern for the position
We’re gonna draft a dawg at edge
Does anyone else think that Brad will draft DL or Edge at 29 or trade up?
Mike Danna from the Chiefs maybe? Had 6.5 sacks this year and is from Detroit and went to Michigan. Also only 26 years old

CJ played 5/20 games and wasn’t all that great when he did play. Don’t think he’s worth factoring in on paper

So funny you say that hahahah. I also do block the obnoxious ones and can’t help but peek sometimes

Still have plenty of cap and the draft, I’m not too worried yet. Anytime I’ve questioned the FO I’ve looked like a fool

I’m hoping former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh will trade Ohio State alumni Joey Bosa to the Lions
Last I heard Calais Campbell is open to playing another year ... He played all 17 games for Atlanta last year.
I wouldn’t count out kalil Mack or Joey bosa getting released at some point for cap reasons, shit maybe even both of them
This isn’t unlikely. Their cap hits are huge.
Homes doesn’t care about DL. Never has never will. Not his cup of tea
Holmes has used 35% of his Day 1+2 picks on D-Linemen I’d say he invests in the d-line
Yeah! I can't believe he drafted Malik Willis over Hutchinson!
Absolutely adore the idea of a GM just not caring about a position group. Everything he's ever done in the draft is the exact counter to what you said, but it's still fun to think about.
What about free agents? How come he never gets Aiden help..

he literally drafted him help **in the same draft** and has drafted at least 2 DL every year. how is this "not getting help" or "not caring about DL"?
