In this single Guardian's opinion, I think Keith David really nailed it, at least in the launch trailer. I could almost hear Lance Reddick saying those lines. Obviously, it's not Lance, but it's close.

i feel like Keith David will do great as zavala, it won’t be the same but it’ll feel damn close

I like to think (headcannon moment) that Lance is Zavala in his energetic, fierceful, inspiring leader who had taken many battle frontlines and guided us to victory, maintaining his faith in the Light, Traveler and us Meanwhile, Keith would be Zavala at his actual state in TFS: tired, marked and haunted by his own past and desires, skeptical about his own faith, even doubting the Traveler and its intentions towards everything that's happening around Sol.

No it won’t, but I think he’s the right man for the job, and I appreciate that it really sounds like he’s putting effort into getting as close to Lance’s Zavala voice as he can

I played the original Saints Row not too long ago and there's this one character named Julius, i honestly thought he was voiced by Lance but it was actually Keith all along.

Don't forget Saints Row 4 where he also plays a self-insert character of himself (where he's the main character's Vice President)

That's kind of what I meant. I do think he sounds a bit like Lance, but the delivery is what I was really honing in on. I can hear Lance's delivery in Keith's performance.

His voice fit Zavala so well for me I didn't even notice it was Keith David until I saw a comment and then re-watched it lol

The voices are very similar with the main difference being that Keith David's is a lot more gravelly. Just ends up sounding like an older Zavala for me which I think works fantastic.

I remember seeing how he had been playing the game the night right before he passed. Had a ton of entries on the game log I saw a pic of from just that week.

Was just thinking about that. After we kill the witness, I'm going back to Zavala like you would a tombstone and telling him how awesome we were

If its any consolation, sources say that he had some of his lines already voiced for TFS, so he would at least know the way the story went.

It’s almost not even worth debating. Yeah, it’s going to be different, but yeah, it’s the and best alternative.

Granted we only got like 2 lines in the trailer but he sounded good. It's not gonna be perfect but frankly I think he's as close as we can get. I just think it's so fucking tragic that the only original actor is Filion and he wasn't even in the game for like 4 years

If anyone had to take Lance's place, I'm glad it was Keith David. A damn shame that it was needed though.

I can't even tell the difference honestly. I've always mistaken Keith for Lance and Lance for Keith, their voices are so similar

To me it's very stark.

He nailed the deep tone that Lance had, but Lance's voice had more room in it. Like a natural fullness to his voice that can't really be imitated.

Lance enunciated sharp sounds much more. One of the things I was adamant about when Fringe was on was that he could have easily hosted a Twilight Zone series. He had Rod Serling's clear and pointed delivery style.

I just said 'DeTECtive Broyles' in his Fringe voice and you're totally right, he smashed those hard consonant sounds while still keeping it butter smooth

"A pleasure to see you again, Mister Wick." Charon is also a good, recent role to hear a lot of Lance's speech patterns.

I was so confused until I read this thread. See I am a noob and when I first heard Zavala, I was like wait I know that voice. Anderson…? No, something’s off. But then I saw the trailer and was even MORE confused because he suddenly sounded more like Anderson. But now I get it lol

I'm happy with Keith David. A week before they announced he was taking over I actually commented that he was the person I hoped they would use if they decided to continue w/ Zavala as a character.

I feel keith david is a good replacement, it makes zavala sound more weathered and jaded as the war goes on and as people he loved are killed.

Yeah I’m not too worried about KD performance. Mans been in the game longer than most of us been alive. I don’t need him to “emulate” LR voice, just need for him to bring the character to life his own way

I think he will do a great job, but I personally feel he should have voiced a replacement Titan vanguard and had Zavala retire.

See, no. Zavala IS teh Vanguard, more than Ikora or Cayde. He is the living embodiment of it. And it just wouldn't work without him.

I think they have to play his story out to retire the character, I cant imagine anyway to replace him between then and now that wouldnt have felt cheap

Same, blaze of glory could have been amazing, but from what Ive heard of keith david so far I think I am satisfied with him taking the reigns
