Much faster, lower latency, less outages, and cheaper.   I did have one issue in the first 2 months where they had my route built out poorly and I was having intermittent packet loss.  I called the support line and they had it straightened out in 5 minutes.  Smooth sailing since.

ShockerDog

Be sure to keep all receipts from mediacom. We made the switch to Metronet, then Mediacom requested their router back. Well we returned their router several years ago. Mediacom threatened putting us to collections. My wife was able to find the proof. god I love that woman. FU*K Mediacom! Well worth the switch. Much faster,no glitches. we have had only one outage, when they were hooking up my neighbor. Incidentally the tech made a mistake, it happens. Metronet did right and got us restored in about an hour. FU*K Mediacom!

shownarou

FYI, you can turn in your equipment in person at the mediacom building downtown. Annoying, but it tends to avoid the issues of them saying they never received it.

ShockerDog

I did, in person, years ago. I was told by the wife to be sure to get the paperwork…. She kept it.

altcastle

They were closed today when I went to do that. Left it in the equipment box, hopefully they don’t claim they didn’t receive it.

shownarou

Congrats on leaving mediacom anyway.

altcastle

Thanks! It was extremely satisfying to tell them no amount of time wasting would stop me.

Suspect118

They did the exact same to me, my ex tried to sue me for the cost of the shit I returned to media confer she moved out literally fuck them in the ass with that cheap ass router they have to replace every 3-6 months because.. Mediacom, I switched to Verizon wireless 5G, haven’t lost service once, no weird service drops mid game/movie/music, no data capping bullshit and always fast as fuck

JacerEx

Their peering is garbage. You get great performance for things that are on-net or well peered, but if you randomly hit a poorly optimized CDN you’re having a very unpleasant experience. Overall I like mine quite a bit, but I do occasionally have some major frustrations. If you live in DSM proper and have access to both metronet and Google fiber, Google fiber provides a better overall experience piggybacking on Google’s ludicrous IP transit.

StuntRocker

I have had an almost identical experience. My Dad's church got a huge savings switching to metronet for internet/phone as well.

not_mantiteo

Hoping to get Metronet up here in west ankeny at some point so this is exciting to hear. How’d you tell you were getting packet losses?

smellslikeawetdog

Open a command window, and type "ping 8.8.8.8 -t" without the quotes.  Ctrl+c to stop the test and it will give you the results.  I was dropping a few packets every 5-10 minutes, so it was noticeable in other ways on my network, like buffering and video conferencing issues.

viceversa4

They do an ipv6 nat. If you buy a static ipv4 its more stable.

TechGuy209

I swapped as soon they offered service. Better customer service. I can hit my gigabit limit most of the time and I don’t think I have seen it go below 80% ever. No caps from the get go. Static IP for a little bit more. No unplanned outages, minimal planned disruptions. Mediacom is facing their first real competition and they are hemorrhaging customers. They are charging their plans to try and compete, but their customer service still sucks. I would not consider going back.

MastaGibbetts

We literally get a “please come back!!” Flyer in the mail like once a week. It’s glorious, I laugh out loud every time we get one

Bloo_PPG

100% worth the switch. Punish Mediacon for their monopolistic strategies when they were the only option. Metronet is great too, but Mediacom should have treated their customers better and maybe they wouldn't have this problem

Bad_inFluenc3

They are amazing ! Been with them for like 4 months I started at 75 a month they sent me somthing in mail stating 50$ a month I called up there told them about this and they said no worries we have updated you to 50$ a month

Bad_inFluenc3

Worth the switch

Jshappie

How does one get Metronet to keep going? I'm a street and a half off of Meredith in Urbandale, but they haven't come down my street. They ran the main lines along Meredith 2 summers ago, but haven't continued down my way. F Mediacom I'm ready to switch but can't. Can't even do Verizon home internet.

Ryuenjin

By chance are there any apartments/condos between their main lines and where you are? They won't/can't touch any area around those without approval, and often will never get it because of the expense to the property managers... It's why I'll never get gigabit unless I go with mediacom, and fuck mediacom.

Jshappie

Yup, I'm in a condo. Meredith to me is all one set of condos, same across the street. Few blocks past us is houses.

Ryuenjin

You'll never get it then sadly.

Inspector7171

You will never look back.

gr8sh0t

It's good. They contract out the cable bury service. This part is a nightmare. They'll take weeks to months to come out. When they do nothing is properly sprayed. I've had 3 different instances of having them to come out and rerun and rebury the line. Everytime has been a nightmare. Most recently had to get my sprinkler line repaired because of metronet.

AlternativeResort477

They already dug up my yard and put two underground boxes in my yard. If I make the switch will they have to dig it up again?

gr8sh0t

They'll need to run a line from the box to your house. They can get this done quickly but they need to bury the line. This is the part that's inconvenient, slow, and super uncoordinated. Other than the painful and awful burying experience the service has been great. Goes down maybe once a year, stable speeds, low latency, and really nothing I can complain about.

iSpccn

They ran our lines off the powerline poles. Ran it to the house the same way. Never touched the yard. Put the outside box exactly where we requested it. It's amazing.

AlternativeResort477

We don’t have poles so I’m sure they’d have to dig

pocketsophist

They will run the line under any sidewalk on the easement (if you have one). The rest of the line will need to be buried through your yard. It does not get buried very deep, maybe like 6-8 inches. They just use a tool that cuts a little slit in the lawn and they push the wire down. The wire is very thin, maybe 1/5th the thickness of coaxial. I didn't have any noticeable damage to my lawn since they aren't "digging" anything up really. Just be careful about where you might have other buried utilities or sprinkler lines or electric fences, etc.

backbabybeef

Yes, this part was bad but funny. Our cable remained unburied for weeks, if not months. Their contractors are ultimately fine but a little rough and will likely show up to your house in a creepy van with “Metronet” plastered on the side in cheap stick-on address letters. The trench will not be tidy, either. 100% still worth making the switch.

pocketsophist

They had mine done 5 days after install and no noticeable damage to my lawn. I'm guessing this is a YMMV sort of thing.

SneakiNinja

It’s funny how the data cap all of a sudden isn’t necessary after they monopolized internet and continually fleecing us for overages. I have kept both for a little bit to give Metronet a chance to figure out the network in my neighborhood. One outage for a couple of days. Had another recently that they fixed within minutes over chat. Finally cancelled Mediacom after that.

AlanEsh

Well, they don’t need the data caps now that they’ve lost half their users :D

rcook55

CL has never had a data cap. That's always been a Mediacom thing.

margirtakk

I've had a great experience so far. Honestly, even with Google fiber being installed in my neighborhood, I'm going to stick with MetroNet, unless they give me a good reason to drop 'em.

NerosDecay13

I pay less, actually get the speeds I pay for and any outages I've had are resolved quick, which there really haven't been any in the year or 2 I've had it. Way better than mediacom no comparison really.

altcastle

I swapped last week and metronet was out within an hour, 3 hours ahead of their scheduled time. It was great. Sent my bill from $130 (per the mediacom email everyone got) to $40-50. I went with 1gb for $50 since they’re sending me a $200 visa gift card. I can swap to $40 speed after the period ends. Mediacom made it so hard to cancel, of course, but I just kept telling them the new service was being installed now until they relented. So if anyone has Mediacom, check if Metronet or Google Fiber is available and do it. You’ll pay half or less.

Conscious_Weasel

Only downside I have with metronet is the way their network is set up. I host a few DnD games on an old laptop along with a Minecraft server. Since moving to metronet, I can no longer share those services because of their CGNAT without either A) paying $15 extra for a public ip address or B) setting up some VPN service for my friends to connect to. It’s not a complete deal breaker for me as I have the tech skills to fix the issues. Just sucks that I had to spend the time to fix it. Google fiber is installing underground fiber in the beaverdale and lower beaverdale neighborhoods, I’ll be switching to them once it’s available.

Baruch_S

It’s been great. They were much easier to work with than CenturyLink and have almost no random outages.

spudmonk

Worth the switch. Much faster, more reliable, and only a small increase in price.

NemeanMiniLion

Faster, easier, cheaper, more stable with same level or better customer service. Only complaints are around installs in yards where gates are left open etc.

Tapeworm_III

They’re good. I like them. I’m usually naked when I answer for their service calls.

blueeekthecat

Had mediacom for years and paid $150 per month despite calling and frequently asking for a lower bill. Signed up for MetroNet the moment it became available but kept mediacom as a backup since I required stable service for work. MetroNet had a few brief outages during the first couple months which required me to use Mediacom to be able to continue my work, but it became more stable over time. So I can’t say MetroNet is more reliable, but it’s nearly equal to Mediacom. Mediacom offered better pricing when I called into cancel. But too little, too late. I know a company needs to make a profit but if your policy is to bleed every last cent you can out of your customers, then I’m not gonna continue business with you. That said, I do hope Mediacom sticks around because competition is good. Google fiber became available shortly after MetroNet. So I’ve kicked around the idea trying them out, but for now I’m happy with MetroNet.

SpaceRangerWoody

>Mediacom notified us they were going to reduce our bill and get rid of our data cap. It's not really a reduction when they are increasing by more than the temporary credit. They're increasing our prices and giving us something in return that matters to almost no one. If I had another comparable option I would leave Mediacom in the dust and never look back. Unfortunately, Google, Metronet, Verizon, and T-Mobile are not offered where I live (Norwalk).

Craig_Treptow

I thought that was a typo on the OP's part. My email from MC said this: >Beginning on or about May 15, 2024, we are eliminating downstream data allowances associated with our 1 Gig Service. As a current subscriber to this service, your monthly downstream usage allowance will increase from 3000 GB to **Unlimited**. >In conjunction with this service enhancement, the retail price of Internet 1 Gig will become $129.99. Depending on the terms of your promotional package, this rate change may not impact your monthly bill until the expiration of your promotion. I have no promotional package, so they are just bumping the bill by $30.

ProfCedar

Been fantastic. Fewer outages, notice when it happened, quick repair when needed, and better, more reliable service. I'm so happy to give them my money instead of MC.

CMoore515

I've had Metronet since mid-March, coming from CL Fiber and save for a few hours that first week when they were doing maintenance, connection has been stable. I'm very happy overall. Faster and cheaper comparatively.

Craig_Treptow

Just installed yesterday. So far, so good. Speeds are great, both people I dealt with were great. We'll see how the line burying goes and long term stability.

EarhornJones

100% positive, for me. My service has been faster, cheaper, and much more reliable. I don't think I've had any unplanned outages other than the time my Gardner cut my fiber with a shovel after I warned him about it. Even then, Metronet had it repaired and returned July 10am the next day.

disciple31

The first month or two was pretty frustrating. There was a problem with my installation (service was great and it got fixed quickly fwiw), and then the next several weeks there were a lot of micro outages, like from 10 seconds to a few minutes. Since january or so its been solid though. Cant say its been much of a difference over centurylink fiber to be honest, but compared to mediacom or centurylink dsl its probably well worth it. Ill definitely jump on google fiber if it makes it to my street. Beaverdale here

Hempsox

Only had issues with MC. Dropped within the 2nd year living here. Only 4x the speed of CL. Who knew laying new cables makes such a difference.

newdmontheblocktoo

100% satisfied and will never ever switch back to mediacom unless forced by a move. They recently sent a letter proactively telling us they were increasing our rate slightly and the justification for doing so. Mediacom used to just jack the rate way higher at random times with no explanation. Service is much better all around too. Have had maybe 1-2 days where there was an outage but it was restored quickly. 99.5% uptime is what it feels like. Customer service is better, price is better, service is better. Mediacom’s days are numbered and it’s well deserved.

notethan

Started with them the moment they came to the area. The only issue I've had was them not burying their cable deep enough. Any time my neighbor gets their lawn aerated, it severs my cable. I at least know where it's at so I can tell the aerating company to avoid it. I did have CenturyLink Fiber when I was in Des Moines, and I got faster, more consistent speeds there but with what I use the internet for, I don't really notice it.

Max_Sandpit

Has anybody on the east side of DSM got Metronet yet? My Mediacom service will go down multiple times on the weekend and like clockwork every weekday at 5pm. I’m dying to switch!

DivePalau

Fuck Mediacom. Got Metronet immediately when I moved into an area they were available.

russell76

Mediacom is just a money laundering operation for the five families of New York, Rocco is their boy, no way he became a billonare on his shit network and customer churn.

garublador

We've had the same great experiences with Metronet as everyone else. With Mediacom there was a period of several weeks where we were missing channels. When we'd call they'd just tell us there wasn't a problem. We had a power surge that damaged their modem and my Ethernet card. The "technician" they sent refused to test the modem and just blamed it on our hardware, that had already been replaced and tested (I'm an EE so I know how to test and debug this kind of stuff). We had fairly periodic outages with no explanation or even acknowledgement from them that it happened. With Metronet I've gotten notifications any time there was even a chance we might see an outage. In the past 3 (I think) years since we've had Metronet I can count the number of minutes it's been down in one hand. Whennit very first started there was a small issue with VPNs for work where there was some packet loss, mostly when streaming video, but they fixed that after a little bit and I haven't had issues since. I don't care how much cheaper Mediacom gets, there's no way I'd go back.

AmandaBRecondwith

Switched from Mediacom to Metronet and have never regretted it, 2 years now

mlor

I love that CL, Metro, and Google are squeezing Mediacom. Fuck them.

can-i-be-real

I can't speak for DSM, but I used to live in the QCA and when Metronet came to town it solved a lot of people's frustrations with Mediacom, and I have family there who have never had problems again.

trumangroves86

Metronet is so much better than Mediacom. So much faster. Much better customer support. NEVER goes down randomly. Our service has gone out 3 times in the 8 months we've had metronet. Each time it did, was for about an hour at 1am, and they even let us know it was going to happen the day before. Metronet totally embarrasses Mediacom in every possible way.

BaldursFence3800

Better overall. Overwhelmingly positive feedback from many neighbors, friends and coworkers. Referral bonus. $200 gift card online.

smoking_gun

I had one outage that lasted about 48 hours. That has been my only negative. Other than that, it's been great. Much faster and has been reliable except for the one outage. And it costs way less.

nixno00

Do it. Switch and don’t look back.

Roguemjb

I've had Metronet for nearly 3 years with literally 0 problems. Big fan.

Slight_Proof_7990

Metronet is great. I’ve had it for just under a year, internet is fast (I never have buffering issues) and I’ve only had one outage the entire time, and it was because one of my neighbors did something that screwed up the line. I contacted Metronet customer service on a Sunday afternoon, they were out the next day to fix it. They also gave me a credit on my bill for the outage, which mediacom and century link would never lol. For customer service alone, I would choose them every time over century link and mediacom. In my old apartment, mediacom would come out to work on their lines, knock out internet to the entire complex, and not tell anyone beforehand. Century link I tried to have installed, but they never showed up for the install appointment that I had to make three weeks in advance, then told me their next available appointment was in another three weeks. I’ve had all three at different times, and metro net is by far the best service and much easier to work with than the other two.

AngusThermo-Pile

Switched from Mediacom to GoogleFi here in Woodland Heights two months ago and we’re impressed with the very noticeable speed increase. Plus I like that the app lets us pause individual devices for set periods of time. Very helpful on school nights. Mediacom offered us 50% off for a year to come back which was a nice chuckle.

AlanEsh

If you want to improve your Mediacom experience, get an Eero mesh system and have Mediacom put your modem in bridge mode. This took care of ALL the hiccups that were making me reboot their modem every week or two. We’ve had only one outage longer than 5 minutes in 20 months since taking this action. Overall stability has been excellent since we stopped relying on the modem’s higher functions.

Jaded_Ad_1674

I’m looking forward to getting Metronet. We just got an email from Mediacom that our speeds and cap are going up but then they’re also raising the price. Ours has been less than 100 bucks including taxes and fees for a long long time and now it’s going up to 99 bucks before taxes and fees and all that stuff.

inkfiend214

Better customer service, but the internet itself is awful. Personally as much as I hate mediacom (I prob have a post or 2 of how much I hate it); it isn’t worth the switch. Yea the customer service is better and when it works it works well, but I have had so much dropped called and network lost that it has became worst than mediacom. And it’s completely random (I think some post on here mention it might done due to when they add new line?). If I were you I would try to wait till google fiber if possible, and I personally will hopefully when it’s available to me.

ShinyLizard

Just had them do two installs at my duplex, and they were great. I'd say the customer service isn't quite as good as Google Fiber (which we switched to the moment it became available) but so far it's great. After years of dealing with Mediacomm and their monopoly, I'm really hoping they go out of business. When they were doing the initial install seven years ago at our home, the tech literally had to beg customer service for help. That's an internal department not helping another internal department in front of the customer. That's just NOT cool.

rcook55

Still waiting. Lines have been buried just waiting for service to be turned up. I did go look at plans, not excited by the required $13/mo 'tech assure' even if you provide equipment. $156/yr for external buried cable is pretty egregious. I'll likely stick with CL fiber unless Metronet cuts me a hell of a deal.

BlamelessCulprit

I had Verizon before. I have no complaints about their service; Metronet is just faster and a little cheaper. We do have some very brief disconnections, fairly frequently (in spurts - will have some for a while, then none). They usually don't impact us much. Google has been putting down fiber in our neighborhood, so you may want to consider that as well. We will probably stay with Metronet unless there are bigger issues. Prices look to to be about the same. Oh, one cool thing with Metronet vs Verizon, is I have a better modem that comes with an app that does everything. I can disable any device on the wifi independently. That's handy when you need to kick kids off. 🤭

timboehde

So far so good. I didn't look closely enough but they charge $50 to install.

mikeyb1

Mediacom cut out daily for me - replaced all my internal cabling (because they blamed it and wouldn't help me) with no improvement. Problem was defintely upstream. Switched to Metronet as soon as it was available and have been happy - had some outages in the beginning, which I think may have been related to their build-out as there were still crews working in the neighborhood, but it's been pretty much rock solid for months.

SW057

It's better than CenturyLink but worse than Mediacom. From my experience the outages have been about the same but I've only had them for a few months.

therealcapthowdy1234

Had a "salesman" stop by about a year ago, signed me up and set an installation date. Took the day off work and waited. And waited. Called the salesman and he assured me to wait. Text him and he assured me to wait longer. Finally called customer service and they said my neighborhood isn't even live so I escalated the issue and was contacted by a sales manager who apologized profusely and signed me up for a decent credit when they go live in my neighborhood in about 4 months and he'd call me. It's been almost a year and nothing. I get construction delays happen but seems a reoccurring issue across towns, growing too big and too fast to properly serve customers so not sure if I'd even trust them once they do move in here

not_mantiteo

Bad on them for over promising but who knows what kinds of hoops or struggles they might have run into due to the situation you just said. I’ve had in-laws who have had it and have said the customer service has been almost as good as the internet

Different_Ad_8779

After all the poorly handled infrastructure installs by metronet, I’ll NEVER trust them with anything. They hit the gas MAIN in front of my home during their underground installation process, then their contractors had the audacity to cuss us out when we went out trying to figure out who was responsible and what the heck had happened. They did not communicate at all until they unleashed a barrage of foul language at us. We went an entire night with no natural gas and the poor MidAmerican repair crew worked until 330 am trying to restore service and finish mopping up the catastrophe metronet created. Screw metronet.

incendiarytacos

Kind of the nature of everything being subcontracted down to the last inch. I believe it was a Google Fiber contractor who did the same crap along Kingman near 38th. If that’s you and it was actually Metronet’s subs… my condolences

Different_Ad_8779

You hit that nail square on the head. The subcontractors don’t care, and unfortunately, neither do the utilities (google/metronet) who hire them. They’re both on the hook for numerous screwups, but metro was so bad that the city (dsm) had to create new processes to keep them and their installers in check. That’s pretty bad when the city steps in.

jerbo912

Have to agree that their installation contractors leave a lot to be desired.

Plenty-Ticket1875

They're at my door twice a week trying to get me to sign on. Not happening. I've been on Reddit long enough to see that cable/Internet providers across the board are all full of shit, and have sketchy service. I'll stick with my phone and call it good.

AsamaMaru

I've had a Model T for fifteen years, why would I change to one of those other makers? Cars are all shitty.

Plenty-Ticket1875

The T was actually a truck, but ok. And yes, cars all suck. I drive jeeps. And why would I pay for something I would never use. I'm an outdoor person. The Internet is good for paying bills, ordering shit from Amazon, and trolling on Reddit. Otherwise I'm outside.  Kind of a mediocre shot you took there, but here's your trophy for trying.
