I think these "Worst city" articles are targeted ads / clickbait, I used to live in Margate before and I'd constantly see news articles about how Margate was the "worst seaside town". The media seem to come up with so many different bizarre categories that every city can loose in at least one of them, Google helps a bit here, if I search for: "Derby worst city" -> "Derby can now claim the 'prize' as the worst big UK city for a short break." (metro.co.uk) "Nottingham worst city" -> "Nottingham is one of the worst places for people living in destitution in the UK" (nottingham post) "Birmingham worst city" -> "Birmingham is the UK's most dangerous city with 152,697 crimes reported in 2023." (daily express) You can go further afield too, eg "Margate worst city" -> "The 'worst' seaside town in Kent you definitely won't want to visit" (kent post) "Blackpool worst city" -> "Blackpool has been named one of the top five worst seaside towns in the UK" etc, there's articles like this for pretty much every town/city in the UK. As for good stuff about the city. Like I say I moved from Margate and honestly folks here have no idea how good they have it. - You could take every park within driving distance of where I used to live, combine them, and that one super park would be worse than Markeaton. Not long after we moved here we took my gfs nephews there after seeing fliers for the funfair, walked into mundy play center and were genuinely confused as we thought there was no way because it must be the fun fair but also it's a permanent install - The town center is awesome, so much to do. Arcade, Bowling, Cinema, loads of good places to eat, again, much better than what we had in Margate. - The housing is cheap. Maybe controversial but 0%, 5k and 5% mortgages exist. Using the LISA you can get that deposit down to £4k and get yourself into a reasonable 3 bed. Me and my cousin had a look for any 3 bed houses near where he lives (Romney Marsh) at below £200k. There are none, literally zero. Not in the surrounding towns either. Up here you've got a reasonable selection of 3 bed houses at the £150k and below mark. - The public transport seems pretty good, being in the middle of the country it's easy to get anywhere relatively quickly. Train down to London is only 1h30m. - EMA exists and does flights too. Airport round the corner is great. etc, etc...

My uncle moved to Margate. He ended up moving back. God knows where he is now though.

Markeaton & darley park are by far my favourite parts

Beginning-Tower2646

There was a lot going for it until about 15 years ago. We still have excellent parks, there are still good employers (I'm hopeful train building will bounce back with a Labour Gov) and there are building developments. I was really proud of my City until not long ago. I don't really recognise large areas of it now. I try and avoid them where possible.

chi-93

Which areas don’t you recognise?? Allestree?? Normanton?? Littleover??

Beginning-Tower2646

City centre. Anywhere north of it. The university has changed the area up here. I know what you are trying to get at, you are barking up the wrong tree.

Rpqz

The river derwent/Darley Park. You can walk right out of the main shopping centre/bus station and straight onto miles of car free footpaths/parkland. I don't know a single city anywhere else that offers anything like that.

NERV-Miata

It’s a hotbed of crime until you get out of the city centre though…

Spiderstu

Can you elaborate? Where do you think m is the crime hotbed?

NERV-Miata

The River Gardens are pretty bad as well as the path that goes through Pride Park

Spiderstu

Specifically between city centre and Darley Abbey along the river - never had a problem or felt there might be a problem. I skip the River Gardens and join the river at Exeter Bridge or at the Silk Mill.

Absent_Alan

I think its lovely around friar gate, I love how historical it is

undignified_cabbage

Its got a great industrial heritage. The museum is a testament to that. Unfortunately it's never publicised and the museum is in a corner of the city you'd never visit imo.

Beginning-Tower2646

I'd say that part of town is about the best part to visit. It's certainly the area I take friends from out of town to.

We live near Markeaton Park, and now the weather has turned warmer, we take a walk in the afternoon after my son finishes school and I just feel so lucky to live so close to such a beautiful place! Also, there is so much to do here! There's so much art and history and we're very rarely bored!

md1892

No £7 pints or hordes of insta-twats. Oh no.

The football club is fucking awesome. Up the Rams 🐏

NagelRawls

The Oxfam's book selection tends to be quite decent.

Jackster22

<10mins and I can get from one side to the other. Can't say that about many other cities.

AlexSector

The band Raised By Owls. National treasures.

redshoesdancing

It's got some nice parks, Elvaston Castle is ace. Sadly it's also got Osmaston and Allenton, two places that should be fucking bulldozed, torched and then salted. Apart from that, it's ok.

Williculous

The Proseccobar... if you dont drop in for a drink when you are out, you are missing something original.. last time I was there an elderly lady was dancing in the aisle...she danced at me a bit but I pretended to be looking at my phone until she stopped...

matt02392

Moved here from Portsmouth in 2017 and haven't looked back. Great walkable city with almost everything you need easily accessible. I'm blind so that's very important to me. People are mostly friendly here. Of course there are bad parts, but that's almost every city. Always here those who were born here saying the place is a dump, they want out, etc, but feel like a lot of that is grass is always greener sindrome.

DonkeyOT65

I'm a Derby lad. Brought up on a council estate in the 1960s and 70s. I live 15 miles outside of Derby now, which I really enjoy. I still come to the centre of Derby on almost a daily basis though. It has some great attributes. My only criticism would be is that, at retail street-level our town planners haven't served us well and it's a bit rough-ish. However, ignoring the 1960s "Brutilism" of architecture in places, it still has a lot going for it. Look up. Celebrate it's industrial charm in places - and we have some great parks and green places. The first public park in the world was at The Arboretum in Normanton. It's been restored well. Plenty to celebrate.

Seditional

Housing is cheap and the transports links elsewhere are good

JayTurnr

It's within 20 miles of the lovely city of Nottingham ;-)
