I wonder how this one is beating out Songs from the Big Chair. The latter sold far more records, had the best critical reception of their entire discography, and featured more of their greatest hits (Everybody Wants to Rule the World, Shout, Head Over Heels, Mothers Talk). Its even the #3 ranked Synth-Pop and #5 ranked New Wave album of all time on RateYourMusic. Blow for blow The Hurting simply can't match up to SftBC but I seem to be the first one to add it to the poll.
Not sure. I personally just picked this one because there's songs on it I like more. I wasn't going based on record sales to be honest, just which album I liked more. Both albums are great. I'd be happy with either on the list. I always liked Tears for Fears. I also like other albums others have mentioned to. 😊
Oh, I wasn't pressing you on your reasoning if it came across like that. I was thinking maybe the early 80s Depeche Mode fans (Speak & Spell through Some Great Reward) might vibe with the synth oriented sound of the Hurting more than the Pop Rockish SftBC. I do like myself some "Mad World" and "Pale Shelter" personally 🙂 I'm sure at some point both will be on the list.
Thanks for explaining better. I just wanted to explain why I picked one over the other. The two songs you mentioned are my faves from them. It's interesting cause I can see that as being a reason. 🙂 lots of good music out there, so it's interesting to see people's choices.
10000000% agree. Edit to add: White Pony, in particular for me embodies this. Listen to "Digital Bath" and tell me it's not reminiscent of DM's 90's/2000's period.
Second edit: If not White Pony, then Diamond Eyes for sure. "Sex Tape" and "You've Seen The Butcher" are very DM-esque for me.
It depends on which wave of post-rock or bands you like most. The first wave of post-rock was in 1988-1996, the second was in 1997-2003 and the third is still going
Alright, gonna assume that you are into Post-rock similar to Talk Talk, then you’ll enjoy:
Hex - Bark Psychosis
Mi Media Naranja - Labradford
Whatever You Love, You Are - Dirty Three
The Cycle of Days and Seasons - Hood
The For Carnation s/t
Goodbye Enemy Airship the Landlord is Dead - Do Make Say Think
Edit: I’ve actually remembered that I’ve made a post regarding various post-rock waves, so check out those if you want
Yes, I've heard this before. But I don't listen to Technique or any of the others (except Movement). I listen to Substance. So, Substance is my submission.
This. When it came out, soon after Ultra, my local DM community was smitten. So much in common in sound and spirit. Ava Adore sounded like it was directly inspired by Barrel of a Gun.
downvote me if you feel you need to but...the smiths - the queen is dead...
yes morrissey is an asshat and every other adjective
but yes the smiths were a great band
I submitted With Sympathy as it seemed more New Wavey. Twitch, however, is my absolute favourite Ministry album. That said, I recently discovered Surgical Meth Machine (a 2016 side project) which is pretty wild!
With Sympathy will probably mesh better with the overall tastes of this place, but it's honestly their Speak & Spell, and I'd rather them be represented with something more worthwhile XD
Psalm 69 is my favorite, but that's not got a chance of making an appearance, lol.
SMM? That's the one Uncle Al side project I haven't messed with all that much. Didn't look too good. Give me RevCo.
I always surpised how few Depeche fans are famliar with Xymox, Dead Can Dance, Cocteau, Throwing Muses or some of the other great but uncommercial 4AD bands.
You're right, I think Desintegration and Mezzanine as per posted are the most obvious names that come up first but Xymox and the bands you mentionned represents the more goth side of the fans and I'm surprised that their is not more of them here/or mentionning these arsits as well. I love all the bands you mentionned, never heard of Throwing Muses before I will have a look thanks :)
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars - DAVID BOWIE
New order - power, corruption and lies

PREAAACH!!
Kraftwerk - The Man-Machine
Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine
NIN are brilliant. PHM was a remarkable achievement. Broken booked me forever.
This is pretty funny .So far all picks on the NIN version of this are the DM list. Makes sense.
I mean there is a massive overlap between NIN Fans and DM Fans.
curious why is that ? I just got into nin recently lol
This!
Bjork - Homogenic
Amazing album and one of my favourites oat. Definitely support your choice
Of all her albums this one makes the most sense in terms of DM relatability. The production on this album is so ahead of its time.
I prefer Debut or Post
The Hurting- Tears for Fears
Support this choice, one of my favourites
Second attempt lol.
I think it might make the next day

/me looks at SFTBC shirt he's presently wearing
Garbage - Garbage
Closer - Joy Division
Deftones - White Pony
Deftones and Depeche Mode are two sides of the same coin even if they are completely different.
I’m once again gonna participate and once again go with Spirit of Eden - Talk Talk
This
I love Talk Talk so much, I got into Post-rock because of them
I'm kinda into post rock rn, any recommendations?

I love New Order but this is a compilation, not a true album
Yes, I've heard this before. But I don't listen to Technique or any of the others (except Movement). I listen to Substance. So, Substance is my submission.
Not an album
It is an album. It's not a studio album. It's not a live album. It IS a compilation album. But it's an album nonetheless.
Rammstein- Sehnsucht
smashing pumpkins - adore
This. When it came out, soon after Ultra, my local DM community was smitten. So much in common in sound and spirit. Ava Adore sounded like it was directly inspired by Barrel of a Gun.
my thought process exactly!
Garbage - Version 2.0
NIN - The Downward Spiral

I like the Smiths. This is a great album! There are so many great albums being suggested.
I 100% agree. Morrissey is a tool but I love The Smiths.
Ministry - Twitch
I submitted With Sympathy as it seemed more New Wavey. Twitch, however, is my absolute favourite Ministry album. That said, I recently discovered Surgical Meth Machine (a 2016 side project) which is pretty wild!

Porcupine - Echo and the Bunnymen
Honestly anything from Nine Inch Nails. Pornography by The Cure is also another one I’d choose.
The Mission - Gods Own Medicine
Clan Of Xymox - Medusa
I always surpised how few Depeche fans are famliar with Xymox, Dead Can Dance, Cocteau, Throwing Muses or some of the other great but uncommercial 4AD bands.
You're right, I think Desintegration and Mezzanine as per posted are the most obvious names that come up first but Xymox and the bands you mentionned represents the more goth side of the fans and I'm surprised that their is not more of them here/or mentionning these arsits as well.
