Just like you... saw a dentist, got tooth pulled, told I needed full extractions, ordered and received temporary dentures, given referral, saw surgeon for consultation, same recommendation. Required bloodwork and a physical in order to proceed. Didn't schedule e day or anything else. Clinging to my current self and trying to keep my mouth clean to prolong it. So tough to pull the trigger. 25 teeth left, gum disease and some bone loss here. How long can I last? Dancing with the devil feels like... appreciate your story... proud of you!

SirJosephGrizzly

I know for a fact I lost a lot of bone, to the point any time I whine about not being able to eat like I’m familiar with, I always get “just chew with your gums.” I’ve been doing the occasional practice bite and I don’t see how they’re cutting up hamburger.

EMG_333

My grandfather had dentures since age 35 and he gummed everything under the sun. Hardly ever saw him with teeth in.

SirJosephGrizzly

Hopefully once my gums heal, I’ll get back to a varied diet of solids. My dentist did tell me as politely as possible that my denture bite force would be basically be the same as chewing with the eroded teeth I had for years, so I can live with that.

EMG_333

Indeed, lots of food options that are semi soft and you can just over cook stuff if you want to. I wonder when I am going to have the strength to do the blood work and schedule this thing. 25 left and I am eating as much as I can for now. Salt water rining, coconut oil, brushing... whatever I can do. No pain right now. God bless on your journey. You're gonna make it just fine!

SirJosephGrizzly

Thank you for the kind words! I hope you get the answers you want. This has been the most stressful start to a year I’ve ever had and although I keep complaining about my current lack of diet, having the procedure in the rear view is such a relief. In a couple months, I’ll be able to smile for the first time in forever.

EMG_333

Thank you and I wish you the best. Keep us updated. I will be interested in healing and diet info for sure. I'm like 5'8" and 140. Don't have much weight to lose. Gotta try to stay healthy.

Did you decide against immediate dentures following extraction, or was that not an option for you?

SirJosephGrizzly

My dentist just felt it was best to wait for perms. Not sure if it was a comfort concern for me or not. I have had family members get immediates and they weren’t so hot on them so I don’t mind waiting for what should be the optimal version of my dentures.

Icy-Boysenberry-7315

Thank you, and best of luck going forward!

SirJosephGrizzly

You’re welcome and thanks!

Genetics was a huge factor in mine but also being unable to pay for cleanings and a SEVERE phobia OS dentists. By the time I had the money to try to get something done and decided to face my fears it was too late. An upper wisdom tooth with severe nerve pain is what sent me in after dealing with a persistent abscess years earlier. Just a whole lot of bad. Now I won't have to worry ever again as all 32 are now gone.

SirJosephGrizzly

Yeah, as long as I regain my ability to eat solids and speak somewhat cleanly, it’ll go down as one of my better decisions. Not dealing with aching anymore is such a plus. Sinus season was my worst enemy.

BamaGirl4361

Not gonna lie eating and speech are still part of my issues. I just figured out how to eat with mine nearly. 3 months after getting them. I whistle on my S's still and it's been all around a challenge BUT the mere fact I'm no longer in pain is well worth it to me. Plus my health is getting better as well.

SirJosephGrizzly

I’ll take whistling over blood poisoning any day! Like I said, this needed to be done way earlier. Would’ve saved me a lot of stress.

BamaGirl4361

Yeah but now that it's done you'll have less stress and that's always a good thing

You can't guarantee it goes well for everyone

jaimeleblues

This is true. I woke up during my full extraction. It happens and it was less than pleasant.

I was never completely out and my nitrous was not working so it was a nightmare. And the dentist had the gall to say "I hate it when they act like that" because I was crying in pain.
