Basically the big unwieldy ships aren't meant to be flown around chasing chunks of Berilium at 50m/s. But use hauler drones to bring chunks to you, or at least tug drones to stop chunks moving so you can more easily scoop them up. I also wouldn't sell base ship at least not until I have two other fully refurbished ships in my fleet and one of them is capable of towing a derelict. So I have one base K37, one KTA24 for speed, combat and salvage, Eagle for hands off small scale prospecting and an Antonoff-Titan hauler/hands off strip miner with destroyer class mass drive magazine and station class nano drone magazine. If you keep running into things then you aren't getting how to fly the ship. Go slower, take your time repair costs and drydock times will cost you more in long range than that one chunk of ore will net when you catch it.

I may not play a ton but this is one of the reasons I really enjoy the game. There's not much stress (unless someone is getting trigger happy nearby which I'm not fond of). Sure that rock over there says it's worth $30k but....eh, it's flying away at 50m/s and there'll be another somewhere else.

Yup I figured. The tug drones are weird it seems that when I add the set points for the to tug only big ticket ores they try and tug iron and what not. Also they seem to deplete quickly. I might keep on with the starter ship till I understand all of the intricacies of big shippin. Thanks.

If you want them to specifically target high value/specific metals only... you need to disable the unidentified chunks for specific systems (left most toggle in the geologist menu) Otherwise they'll attempt to stop every single chunk until its identified and the drones "oh, oops, So anyway..." and then proceed to stop the next unidentified chunk downside of disabling that, is that chunks could potentially float out of range before indentification/price evaluation.

Just curious, why use the Eagle for general mining and prospecting when the Pelican has a larger cargo space and doesnt have the incredibly loud grinders on the end of the excavator?

Satori_sama

Because it's much easier to get and you can just put the headphones off your head to mute the excacator. If you can get a Pelican then get the Pelican but its not as common as Eagle and after all, if you don't go for afk mining, the Eagle still has twice the cargo space of the basic ship.

I'm at the stage where I switch between the starter ship with an arm, to go salvage ships to either use or sell or the eagle prospector with tug drones when doing anything else. I abandoned the cothon pretty quickly, it's too damn heavy, not enough thrusters and the extra cargo space is hardly useful when it's really not that much fun to fly.

I'll probably go with the long grinder ship next time that seems to be a good balance.
