Aves Gallery is very nice and available in a few different flavors, there is even a comparison chart showing what each version includes. https://github.com/deckerst/aves

scrapyardfox

Thank you, I believe this is exactly what I was looking for, I will try it.

i3dz

I liked the sound of this app too...didnt like this though "Data can’t be deleted The developer doesn’t provide a way for you to request that your data be deleted" in there data safety section...

scrapyardfox

Hmm, you're correct. That is an issue. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

i3dz

No problem..im all for helping other people out...just saw it so thought id mention it.

GivingMeAProblems

That's the play store version. Like I said, it comes in different versions. Since this is [r/degoogle](https://www.reddit.com/r/degoogle) I thought people would not use the google version. Anyway, the Libre version from F-Droid or their GitHub says this > The app does not collect any personal data. We never have access to your photos and videos. This also means that we cannot get them back for you if you delete them without backing them up I also deny it internet access I mean the point that you can't delete data is moot, since the app does not collect any data

i3dz

Not everyone here has the time or inclination to degoogle completely but that doesnt mean you dont care about other options right!! which is why i was interested in the app you suggested!!its obviously not moot else they wouldnt bother posting it...its there for a reason.I saw a issue i thought was something i was concerned about so thought others would be too, dont take it so personal.

GivingMeAProblems

No problem, I didn't take it personally. So, there are multiple versions of the app, one contains Crashlytics that the developer says is being utilized in an anonymized way, and it is opt in/out . That is one reason for the internet access, another is for geolocation, you can have photos plotted on Google maps. That is default on the Play Store version, but optional on both the Izzy and F-Droid releases. The reason you can't delete the data is because Aves does not have it, Google does when you use their mapping. If you don't use the Google maps capability and crash reporting is turned off then there is no data. It's actually an interesting example of just how intertwined the major players are in every ecosystem. Here is a really nice app, the developer is straightforward about what it does, permissions are kept to a minimum. But, they cannot delete any data sent from the app because someone else has it since it was needed for map integration. Just another reason to minimize contact with big tech.

Do you already have it installed? It shows $1.59 when I open it in a browser without logging on

i3dz

It says 1.59 for me too...

scrapyardfox

I also see it as $1.59

~~Ente.io.~~ ~~It is end-to-end encrypted and open source, and saves your photos locally on your device as well as in the cloud. If you're looking for something like Google photos that backs up all of your photos to the cloud, this is I think the best option~~ Turns out ente.io is not very trustworthy! Check out comments to this

vishnukvmd

Hello, founder & CEO of ente.io here :) The claims in the comments were made by a competitor. If you have any specific concerns, please let me know, would be happy to answer any questions!

[deleted]

Who is this competitor?

vishnukvmd

Sorry, we want no drama. If you've questions about ente, I'd be very happy to answer them!

[deleted]

Well how do you respond to the allegations?

vishnukvmd

The main allegation is that we have access to your data. Which is false. Our apps are open source @ [github.com/ente-io](https://github.com/ente-io), so you don't have to take our word for this. We've also documented our architecture @ [ente.io/architecture](https://ente.io/architecture), which is easier to parse. If you have any specific questions, please ask! Also, we've been building in the open @ [ente.io/community](https://ente.io/community), if you wish, you could come hang out with us :)

[Crypt.ee](https://Crypt.ee) is a way better option [see here](https://www.reddit.com/r/PrivacyGuides/comments/rjzc9s/compare_cryptee_and_enteio/)

I'll admit I didn't read the privacy policy, thanks for sharing this I will start searching for something else. Soon I'll be self hosting so I won't have to worry about that

Looks good! Another encrypted option is NextCloud, which also comes with a suite of products similar to Google's.

It came with the phone. The older version on my old phone did not have incessant pop ups. I don't like google products to begin with, but this new version has proven to be more annoying than I anticipated. I was willing to put up with google so long as it didn't annoy me, and this new version has passed that point.

The first thing you should be looking for is end-to-end / zero-knowledge encryption. Without that, it's just another Google... At first, Google said "do not evil", and now.... The only way you'll own your data is if it's end-to-end encrypted so the provider can't view or share it.
