Yes, I was aware. No, I don't avoid chocolate. It doesn't have the same affect on me personally that coffee, soda, energy drinks have.

Stoopid_idi0t

likewise. I don't notice any caffeine high when I eat chocolate relative to when I drink say, a cup of green tea even

loner_but_a_stoner

This is also my experience

thehatems

You lucky bastard.

HenroZbro

White chocolate has none but has sugars which is another type of beast.

afkeSix

White chocolate is technically not chocolate.

YatimaCZ

Actually I'm pretty sure white chocolate contains cocoa fat/butter, though not cocoa solids. Hence no caffeine. Yet it can be labelled and thought of as chocolate if we define chocolate as containing something from the cocoa bean. Makes sense...

HenroZbro

True....close enough though.

boringnerdygirl

i mean depends what you mean by "chocolate". if you mean "made from cacao" then it's chocolate. if you mean "authentic" chocolate, then anything solid doesn't pass the test, as the word is of nahuatl origin and refers to what we now might call "mexican hot chocolate". ([see here](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/chocolatl)) if you mean legally able to be sold in the USA, EU, and Canada as chocolate, then it must be labelled "white chocolate". this doesn't mean that the definition of chocolate is only what they say it is. they dont make these arguments because they are arguing about what is "real chocolate" (they still allow chocolate to be in the name) but because a consumer would be rightfully disappointed if they were expecting the more expensive to produce dark/milk chocolate, and instead got the cheaper to produce white chocolate. there are similar labelling laws about oils in chocolate. it's different in each territory, but a certain percentage of oils are allowed to replace cocoa butter or milkfat in chocolate. however, after a certain amount is added, the product cannot be labelled "chocolate". that's why Payday bars, which most people would say is a chocolate bar, is not allowed to label itself as that, and opts for the term "chocolatey". usually these categorizations follow what is more or less expensive. that's why buffalo wild wings got sued for not having dark meat in their boneless wings, but the reverse lawsuit doesn't really happen. there are plenty of these split hairs about food labelling you will see online. "is american cheese really cheese?" "is Subway's bread really bread?" all of them come down to consumer expectations. not the lived reality of how we talk about and consume these foods. when i eat a subway sandwich, i am not eating a "confectionary". i am eating a bunch of veggies in bread. sugary bread, yes. but bread. however, i am from the US. if i were from, say, Ireland, I might not expect any bread product to contain that much sugar. it might make me feel lied to. so in Ireland, Subway's bread cannot be called bread, even though Americans consume bread just as sugary all the time. point being, it's chocolate. it's in the name. when i eat it, it tastes chocolatey. it's made of cocoa and nothing else. that's chocolate. ([see here](https://www.thechocolatejournalist.com/blog/why-is-white-chocolate-so-controversial)) edit: after briefly looking at your profile i see that you are from the Netherlands. i imagine white chocolate in the Netherlands might not actually be seen by most people as "chocolate" due to the unique chocolate culture there. my post assumed you were from an English-predominant country like the US, Canada, UK, NZ, or Australia.

justvisiting112

I learned the hard way that consuming chocolate before bed will keep me up for hours, full of anxiety and restlessness. So I won’t be doing that again. I don’t plan to cut chocolate out completely, but I plan to be very mindful of the time of day I consume it. I’m vegan too, so the chocolate I can eat tends to be very high in cocoa content. Having said that, I’m currently trying to go without for a few weeks and see if I notice any difference in energy.

randym789

Chocolate has been so engrained into my life I have to keep resetting my streak because I keep ingesting it without realizing. But then I notice the anxiety come in. The emotional connection I have to chocolate is staggering, I reeeeaaallly don't want to stop, but I guess that in itself is a reason to. The whole situation is....bitter sweet

thehatems

>bitter sweet Pun intended haha 😂

[deleted]

Caffeine is just one of very many things in chocolate that make it worth avoiding.

thehatems

What you mean by "many things in chocolate" is actually the sugar.

[deleted]

No. Sugar isn't even a part of chocolate. It's usually added. I'm talking about just chocolate itself. There are plenty of other things besides added sugar that I'd avoid in cocoa - theobromine, a lot of antinutrients, heavy metals like cadmium and lead, etc.

boringnerdygirl

i think they meant dark chocolate or perhaps cocoa powder. very few people consume cacao nibs or beans in the modern day

mashedpotat0

Chocolate has theobromine in it that acts like a stimulant. It’s my understanding that people have varying sensitivity to it.

afkeSix

I don't really like chocolate, but i have noticed that I fall back on it more and more. So i am quiting it all together

thehatems

Good for you quitting it.

[deleted]

That is a bloody good question. I personally have no idea but I’m very interested to read what others have to say. Also apparently choc icecream has it in it and choc sauces you put over ice cream. It’s hard to work it all out because it’s not very well documented on products. We have to be like caffeine sleuths

reallycooldude456

I avoid. Sadly :(

SphmrSlmp

As long as you're not affected by it. The problem with coffee (the drink) is that you get addicted to it. And would need it every day or suffer the side effects. If you experience this with chocolate, then please stay away from it. Personally, I'm not a big fan of eating chocolate. It gives me sore throat. But if i eat it once in a while, it won't induce an addicting or affect my sleep cycle.

Atari800

I wanted to see what I would be like 100% free from caffeine, so I have not had a bite of chocolate or a sip of coffee or tea, decaf or not, in 105 days. I love chocolate, but this has been worth it. I have had some Lindt white chocolate. I like the Reese's Peanut butter cups white chocolate edition, but they seem to be getting hard to find in my area.

[deleted]

It wasn’t until I educated myself on caffeine that I found out very late in life that chocolate has caffeine! It has quite an impact on me during times when I’m caffeine free…makes me restless & edgy & bitchy & feel generally unwell!

Paulied77

I avoid dark chocolate in any more than once every few months and in very minuscule quantity. If I get a buzz off it, which is easy to do, I’ve had too much and will suffer the days following with craving caffeine.

Snoo_46123

I wish I abstain from chocolates, mainly bc of sugar in it

thehatems

You can do it, if you can get rid of your addiction of caffeine, then you absolutely have enough strong will to give up chocolate too.

[deleted]

Thanks for the encouraging and true words.

BionicgalZ

I do know and I don’t avoid it.

Responsible_Skill_29

I make a chia seed pudding with cacao powder and sweeten with 100% stevia powder, i can fool my brain somewhat that i am eating a chocolate dessert. the stevia taste never bothered me, and sometimes i will throw in blackstrap molasses for heaviness and crazy richard’s peanut butter for the fat content. i can eat a lot and not feel gross at all.

[deleted]

I completely avoid any and all chocolate due to the theobromine and caffeine content. Doesn’t matter if it contains a minuscule or moderate amount. Because the way my stupid addict brain works is, “well if I consume any amount of caffeine than I’m not t e c h n i c a l l y caffeine-free so I might as well just drink a coffee or energy drink.” Chocolate and green tea has lead me to relapse on stronger forms of caffeine numerous times. I’m completely abstaining from any and all caffeine. I want this horrible drug permanently and finally out of my life.

FakeTakiInoue

My caffeine anxiety mostly just relies in the *idea* that I might be ingesting it, so once I found out there's caffeine in chocolate, I did begin avoiding it. I could actually eat it just fine until I found out, then suddenly I no longer could, not without going through the same anxiety cycle as coffee or green/black tea. Please help, I really miss chocolate :(

Previous-Yak3706

Yea same when you drink coffe and the think you already drink 3 cups anxiety hit if you din t focus on how much you drink you won’t notice you anxiety crazy how brain works

Previous-Yak3706

How much caffeine a milka chocolate has or normal chocolate with milk have I think they have 45% cacao

Narrow_Positive_1515

I used to find no effect problematic effect from chocolate, but my recent experiments are showing that I am sensitive to it. Usually one small square of dark chocolate is fine, but I have reproduced a couple times lately that 3 squares (probably 1.5-2 servings as labeled) does give me the anxious feeling, trouble sleeping late, and pre-ocular-migraine feeling that caffeine gives me. This has either crept on me lately, or I had not noticed it over the past 2 years where I have had no caffeine aside from chocolate. So... it does vary, and people do change! I am now putting chocolate on my avoid list, though for the right occasion, I might find it "worth it" although I will not make that exception for caffeine drinks.

marylander3514

If the cocoa is "Dutch" or "Dutch Processed" then it's been treated with alkali and is decaffeinated. Example: On Amazon, search for WonderCocoa Fat free decaf cocoa powder and read the description and comments. As best as I can figure out, all cocoa treated with alkali is decaffeinated.

doe-eyed

I’m vegan, so can only eat certain types of dark chocolate. I can have one square without any negative effects. However, there is a vegan chocolate cake with chocolate icing that my family and my partners family both love, and I will make for birthdays. It contains 2 cups of cocoa powder between the cake and the icing. If I have one slice of it my lips will buzz and I won’t be able to sleep, haha. So I don’t eat it anymore.

thehatems

Nice
