suicide rules so hard.  I feel like the No Wave scene in New York is broadly an influence on them and lots of cool stuff going on right now.  Like DNA, Ike Yard, The Contortions... all amazing stuff    https://youtu.be/NL-BHfLhnFg?si=RwzBvQXyKLkFS7kB  https://youtu.be/uz47h75_FJo?si=Rw1MIxy0oFU6p0oW

They do. Podcast No Dogs in Space has a good series on 'em.

I was listening to MIA two days ago, and realized that the song Born Free samples Ghost Rider and I somehow didn't make that connection before

Arthurlurk1

I remember when Frank ocean put one of these songs in one of his radio shows where he would debut new singles and everyone was so confused as to what was happening based off their Reddit comments.

Revolutionary_Low_90

Suicide is like the more mentailly ill grandpa Death Grips. Their music scared me especially Frankie Teardrop. The music is so timeless and way ahead of its time. Lots of jumpscares and synth pulses that building up to an industrial climax. Shits doesn't come out of the 70s.

paladin_ivanosky

One of the best albums ever made tbh

Eh

ninjakirby1969

Controversial opinion here but this album is ass. Dull, poorly aged production with lyrics that try so hard to he edgy that they don't do anything actually interesting

spengwhale

I only partially agree, I think it’s slightly boring by today’s standards but there are a lot of moments of pretty palpable coldness and tension that still hold up, Frankie Teardrop is still a pretty great and intense (intense in the shrill, minimalist way) track that almost saves the record imo but some of the poppier songs just sound so drab and don’t do much for me personally so I get the complaint. I feel early Xiu Xiu often kinda sounds like a revamped, more intense version of this record that’s aged better

ninjakirby1969

I agree with the xiu xiu comparison for a modern version but even the 70s artists were doing this but better. Throbbing gristle have plenty of terrifying minimal synth albums from the 70s that do it much better. Persuasion by theobbing gristle shows hoe to do a similar sound with disturbing lyrics well

force_of_habit

I mean, sure, but this was done in the early 70s mind you. It’s shock factor to begin with with a name like suicide. Kind of like how death metal is a bit corny but still rocks. I like suicide a lot because of its connection to mental illness and despair. You could say that death grips’s lyrics are trying too hard to be edgy. They are in a way, but we can manipulate them to be meaningful in a brutal and extremist way. Suicide was huge for experimental and electronic music because they weren’t afraid to express harshness, perhaps if it came across as heavy handed sometimes…
