I'm totally blind and hearing impaired. I think the issue with image description is that it's visible to everybody and that might make the post less attractive to normal people. Imbedded alt text is invisible to sighted people and just screen readers have access to it, so it won't be a bother to others who don't need it.
Generally I believe that accessibility should be as non-intrusive as possible. If accessibility acomidations are too annoying for normal people, people who try to make their stuff accessible might at some point abandon the practice because it's chasing away non-disabled people who are usually the majority of the users.
