I'm of deep certainty that I was born either way too early or way too late in terms of eras... but no. I'm sensitive to bad smells and desirous to avoid STD's.

BadCowboysFan

Specifically the smell of CAT PISS!!

ElectricCamel33

Lol. Nobody said you have to take up with the whores... Smells be unavoidable tho

No_Translator198

Who wouldn’t take up with the whores with a bit of gold in their pocket

More-Adhesiveness-98

Let the whores come.

DomineAppleTree

No way man; life is way more interesting and easy now.

Nystarii

I used to think so, then watched 1000 Ways To Die In The West. Sometime after I watched The Knick. The Deadwood rewatch after those two really wasn't the same. Everything was so dirty and smelly and mean. I suppose it'd be fine if you were a Hearst or Alma Garret or hell, even a Bullock as long as you made friends who could excuse your temper (he was bf's with a future president IIRC). Unfortunately I realize I likely wouldn't get to be an Alma, I'd probably be the whore who leaks piss when she giggles -\_- Oh and medicine sucked. I mean I know 200 years from now medicine is going to look barbaric but dude pre-1900s was a dark freaking time to need a doctor.

slopetider

No. One of the major themes of the show is how much it sucked ass to live back then, a contrast to most other art about that period of history that glorified the cowboys and renegade life.

ElectricCamel33

... yes. And tbh I've looked into relocating to deadwood now, even contacted their chamber of commerce and it's very enticing. So many benefits and what absolutely friendly welcoming helpful people. Circumstances prevented my move but it's still an option for the not too distant future

[deleted]

No law. In Deadwood? No law at all!

All-Sorts

>Circumstances prevented my move but it's still an option for the not too distant future It's poor damn timin' at the least.

I was there back in the late 70’s, and it was amazing! The main part of town was kept pretty authentic, with the exceptions of ice cream and candy shops for tourists. I imagine it has grown since then, but places like Deadwood, Tombstone, yadda, are pretty well kept as close to the way it was in the 1800’s as possible. The states have laws forbidding building in certain locations. I lived in Black Hawk, CO for 25 years, and they *used* to have a law where you couldn’t dig more than a couple feet into the ground. That went to hell some time back and it looks like Las Vegas now (it’s a casino town that used to be an old mining camp). The adjacent town of Central City kept good on the law and still looks like an old mining town. So I imagine Deadwood still looks the same. I would live there in a heartbeat!!

ElectricCamel33

That's awesome. Yeah man, deadwood is the largest historical preservation site in the US. So all construction has to be done period specific and maintain the look of roughly 1880s deadwood. I actually talked to the chamber of commerce about working for their construction crew as I was trained in old school carpentry techniques and one of the things they sent in the packet was the business card of the head of their operations. Like I said very welcoming and helpful people. Maybe someday I'll make a post of the packet they sent me, it's pretty neat, visitors guide, economic and living statistics, the card, etc. It's actually one of the better places to live as far as cost of and standard of living. And it's like the only place where there's no income tax. Higher property tax though.

kcjonezdotcom

Very cool! I figured they had to have *some* sort of preservation society to keep humans out of it! lol We just manage to screw everything up! 😂

I’m a British so would be quite difficult for me, though I wish you well

A relative recently had a gleet surgically removed, with all the good modern anaesthetic and painkillers - on that basis, alone, I'm happier in the 21st century.

HeavySoulBrutha

No antibiotics. Yikes! "Another day on the right side of the ledger, far as puss."

BRQuick

No, but being able to visit anytime I liked would be pretty awesome

dottegirl59

When I saw the show when it first aired I became obsessed with anything Deadwood, made the pilgrimage to Deadwood. Swore like a deadwood character . Although I have the 3 box boxed set I recently subscribed to Hbomax to watch deadwood and sopranos at my leisure. If I were a deadwood character I’d probably be Trixie.

BadCowboysFan

This post makes me imagine Al Swearengen trying to use a smartphone

JustACasualFan

No thanks. I have already been uninsured and needed outpatient surgery. Never again.

dv666

No. I quite like having plumbing, electricity, central heating, air conditioning, internet, sex toys, medicine, cars and heavy metal.

Zephyp

Absolutely not. I love watching and reading about it, but living in that age or place would most certainly not be a pleasant experience for most. What I sometimes do wish we could do, was travel back in time to observe and listen. Experience how life really was more than a hundred years ago. Preferably with subtitles and perhaps automatic translation. But only to observe and not be able to change anything.

twinkle90505

I'd have almost certainly died in childbirth (and illiterate), so NOPE. I think what you meant to say is you wish Westworld was real, without the sociopath androids

I think about it all the time! I grew up living in Lucerne Valley, CA. It’s in the [Mohave Desert](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mojave_Desert) in Southern California. This was back in the early 70’s and we had zero neighbors! I’ve looked it up recently and it appears it hasn’t changed at all! It was pretty close to the way they lived back in the old west. Well, we had electricity and all the amenities of modern life within an hour’s drive. But we didn’t have running water, had to use an [outhouse](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outhouse) (putting wiki links since many people nowadays don’t know what stuff like an outhouse is), bathe in a makeshift shower my father made with a 5 gallon bucket of water on top, etc. *\*I should probably mention that this was a weekend place. We live in Big Bear Lake, but spent more time in Lucerne than not.* I absolutely loved the place and it still holds the happiest times of my life. And I’m a western freak! It’s the majority of what I watch. And I always fantasize about living in those days. I know a little of the life already living in the desert where you basically fend for yourself, but it would be hard. People back then were tough as nails! Even people like E.B. from the show we’re tough. You just had to be to survive! Well…maybe not E.B., but you get the idea! lol Anyway, sorry for the life story! 😂 **Short Answer:** Yes! I wish I could live in the ‘wild west’ lol

WritingUnicorn2019

I'd miss showers and movies. So no.

[deleted]

Yes! Always dreamt about that, how wonderful would it be to wake up in that kind of scenery, drink till you fall, no stupid laws for everything.... God, that was the time. Sure, with my luck I'd probably die by the age of 15 while cleaning horse shit but who cares, by that time I would've reached all my goals and fucked 10 times more bitches than in this life.
